Re-Architecting An Information/Technology Literacy Course: Breaking New Ground And Laying Foundational Pedagogies, Mardi Chalmers Nov 2010

Re-Architecting An Information/Technology Literacy Course: Breaking New Ground And Laying Foundational Pedagogies, Mardi Chalmers

LOEX Conference Proceedings 2008

The session will be separated into two sections: breaking new ground and foundational pedagogies for new course architecture. The presenter will first describe several models of course redesign and apply them specifically to redesigning an info/tech literacy course. These models go from partial to complete re-architecting, so participants would be able to fit their current information literacy course(s) into one of these models, making this session very valuable to any librarian wishing to improve information literacy (IL) instruction at their institution.

The second section will focus on pedagogies used for over a decade in the sciences, humanities and education for …

On The Evidence For Species Coexistence: A Critique Of The Coexistence Program, Adam M. Siepielski, Mark A. Mcpeek Nov 2010

On The Evidence For Species Coexistence: A Critique Of The Coexistence Program, Adam M. Siepielski, Mark A. Mcpeek

Dartmouth Scholarship

A major challenge in ecology is to understand how the millions of species on Earth are organized into biological communities. Mechanisms promoting coexistence are one such class of organizing processes, which allow multiple species to persist in the same trophic level of a given web of species interactions. If some mechanism promotes the coexistence of two or more species, each species must be able to increase when it is rare and the others are at their typical abundances; this invasibility criterion is fundamental evidence for species coexistence regardless of the mechanism. In an attempt to evaluate the level of empirical …

Parental Involvement In A New Environment: Igbo Families In Chicago And The Education Of Their Children—A Narrative Inquiry, Obiefuna Onwughalu Nov 2010

Parental Involvement In A New Environment: Igbo Families In Chicago And The Education Of Their Children—A Narrative Inquiry, Obiefuna Onwughalu

College of Education Theses and Dissertations

Parents, family, school and community have overlapping spheres of influence in the education of children (Epstein, 2001). Schooling isolated from the home will have significant consequences for child behavior and development (Bronfenbrenner, 1979). A fact of life is that a people’s socio-political, cultural and historical life situation, context or environment, or ecological systems (Bronfenbrenner, 1977) affects their way of life.

This study seeks to understand the nature of parental engagement of Igbo families, a newer immigrant community in Chicago, in the education of their children. All immigrants are not the same, and knowing about Igbo experiences will enable scholars and …

Genomic Tools Development For Aquilegia: Construction Of A Bac-Based Physical Map, Guang-Chen Fang, Barbara P. Blackmon, David C. Henry, Margaret E. Staton, Christopher Saski, Scott A. Hodges, Jeff P. Tomkins, Hong Luo

Publications

The genus Aquilegia, consisting of approximately 70 taxa, is a member of the basal eudicot lineage, Ranuculales, which is evolutionarily intermediate between monocots and core eudicots, and represents a relatively unstudied clade in the angiosperm phylogenetic tree that bridges the gap between these two major plant groups. Aquilegia species are closely related and their distribution covers highly diverse habitats. These provide rich resources to better understand the genetic basis of adaptation to different pollinators and habitats that in turn leads to rapid speciation. To gain insights into the genome structure and facilitate gene identification, comparative genomics and whole-genome shotgun …

Development Of Cane Toad (Chaunus Marinus) Tadpoles In The Presence Of Intraspecific And Interspecific Competition Under Resource Limiting Conditions, November 2010, Stefan K. Wheat

Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation

Increased competition between and within species of amphibians, resulting from reduced volume breeding pools, represents one facet of climate change’s impact on ecosystem dynamics that remains relatively unstudied. This study examines the effect of competition on the development of larval cane toads (Chaunus marinus) at varying levels of intraspecific and interspecific competition using Lithobates forreri as the competitor. While intraspecific competition was shown to be a significant factor affecting C. marinus growth, the effect was not significant for interspecific competition. However, survivorship was shown to be significantly lower in the presence of high interspecific competition as compared with low competition. …

Act 4: How The Land Looks (C. 30,000 Bce-1984), James Smith Allen

A Privileged Past

Act 4 of "A Privileged Past" shifts its focus from the author and his experiences to his wife, Anne Winston, and her family, especially on the high plains of Oklahoma and the Pacific shores of southern California. This woman’s parents were descended from tenacious farmers, circuit preachers, and committed teachers. Arising out of a dysfunctional family, however, Winston’s quest for control over her personal life was located in educational and professional achievement in German Studies before 1984. The dominant metaphor of this chapter concerns sight, a natural sensibility that the protagonist has sharpened over years with her acute visual memory.

Bioelectrics Publications

3,4-Methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA) is an illicit psychoactive drug with cardiovascular effects that have not been fully described. In the current study, we observed the effects of acute MDMA on rabbit left ventricular function. We also observed the effects of MDMA on nuclear factor-kappa B (NF-kappa B) activity in cultured rat ventricular myocytes (H9c2). In the rabbit, MDMA (2 mg/kg) alone caused a significant increase in heart rate and a significant decrease in the duration of the cardiac cycle. Inhibition of nitric oxide synthase (NOS) by pretreatment with L-NAME (10 mg/kg) alone caused significant dysfunction in heart rate, systolic pressure, diastolic pressure, …

Dysregulation Of The Mitogen Granulin In Human Cancer Through The Mir-15/107 Microrna Gene Group, Wang-Xia Wang, Natasha Kyprianou, Xiaowei Wang, Peter T. Nelson

Pathology and Laboratory Medicine Faculty Publications

Granulin (GRN) is a potent mitogen and growth factor implicated in many human cancers, but its regulation is poorly understood. Recent findings indicate that GRN is regulated strongly by the microRNA miR-107, which functionally overlaps with miR-15, miR-16, and miR-195 due to a common 5′ sequence critical for target specificity. In this study, we queried whether miR-107 and paralogs regulated GRN in human cancers. In cultured cells, anti-argonaute RNA coimmunoprecipitation with downstream microarray analyses indicates that GRN mRNA is directly targeted by numerous miR-15/107 miRNAs. We further tested this association in human tumors. MiR-15 and miR-16 are known to be …

Genetic Diversity In A Deep-Sea Harpacticoid Copepod Found Near Two Oil-Drilling Sites In The Gulf Of Mexico, Christopher S. Gregg, David W. Foltz, John W. Fleeger

Faculty Publications

Sites adjacent to (near-field) and distant from (far-field) oil-drilling platforms were sampled for harpacticoid copepods at two locations in the northern Gulf of Mexico off the coast of Louisiana, both at depths of ≈ 1100 m. The sites were located at Garden Banks Area Block 602 (GB 602) and Mississippi Canyon Area Block 292 (MC 292). Near-field sites at both locations were characterized by large numbers of a single undescribed species of harpacticoid copepod, Bathycletopsyllus sp., but this species was essentially absent from far-field sites. We sequenced a 710 bp portion of the mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I gene …

Lines And Sines Of Primate Evolution, Miriam K. Konkel, Jerilyn A. Walker, Mark A. Batzer

Faculty Publications

The primate order is a monophyletic group thought to have diverged from the Euarchonta more than 65 mya.1 Recent paleontological and molecular evolution studies place the last common ancestor of primates even earlier (≥ 85 mya).2 More than 300 extant primate species are recognized today,3, 4 clearly emphasizing their diversity and success. Our understanding of the evolution of primates and the composition of their genomes has been revolutionized within the last decade through the increasing availability and analyses of sequenced genomes. However, several aspects of primate evolution have yet to be resolved. DNA sequencing of a wider array of primate …

Development Of Microsatellites For Genetic Analyses And Population Assignment Of The Cat Flea (Siphonaptera: Pulicidae), Claudia Husseneder, Susan P. Garner, Lane D. Foil, Kevin R. Macaluso

Faculty Publications

Cat fleas, Ctenocephalides felis (Bouch) (Siphonaptera: Pulicidae), are common ectoparasites of companion animals that negatively impact their hosts directly by causing dermatitis and blood loss during feeding and indirectly through the potential transmission of disease causing agents. We isolated and characterized seven novel microsatellite loci from a partial genomic library of the cat flea enriched for di-, tri-, and tetranucleotide repeats. We screened these loci in cat fleas from two laboratory colonies and one wild-caught population collected at a temporary animal shelter (Parker coliseum) in Baton Rouge, LA. Six loci were polymorphic, with two to 15 alleles per locus and …

Non-Native Salmonids Affect Amphibian Occupancy At Multiple Spatial Scales, David S. Pilliod, Blake R. Hossack, Peter F. Bahls, Evelyn L. Bull, Paul Stephen Corn, Grant Hokit, Bryce A. Maxell, James C. Munger, Aimee Wyrick

Biology Faculty Publications and Presentations

Aim The introduction of non-native species into aquatic environments has been linked with local extinctions and altered distributions of native species. We investigated the effect of non-native salmonids on the occupancy of two native amphibians, the long-toed salamander (Ambystoma macrodactylum) and Columbia spotted frog (Rana luteiventris), across three spatial scales: water bodies, small catchments and large catchments.

Location Mountain lakes at ≥ 1500 m elevation were surveyed across the northern Rocky Mountains, USA.

Methods We surveyed 2267 water bodies for amphibian occupancy (based on evidence of reproduction) and fish presence between 1986 and 2002 and modelled …

Automated Classification Of Breast Pathology Using Local Measures Of Broadband Reflectance, Ashley M. Laughney, Venkataramanan Krishnaswamy, Pilar Beatriz Garcia-Allende, Olga M. Conde, Wendy A. Wells, Keith D. Paulsen, Brian W. Pogue

Dartmouth Scholarship

We demonstrate that morphological features pertinent to a tissue's pathology may be ascertained from localized measures of broadband reflectance, with a mesoscopic resolution (100-μm lateral spot size) that permits scanning of an entire margin for residual disease. The technical aspects and optimization of a k-nearest neighbor classifier for automated diagnosis of pathologies are presented, and its efficacy is validated in 29 breast tissue specimens. When discriminating between benign and malignant pathologies, a sensitivity and specificity of 91 and 77% was achieved. Furthermore, detailed subtissue-type analysis was performed to consider how diverse pathologies influence scattering response and overall classification efficacy. The …

The genome of Thellungiella parvula, a halophytic relative of Arabidopsis (Arabidopsis thaliana), is being assembled using Roche-454 sequencing. Analyses of a 10-Mb scaffold revealed synteny with Arabidopsis, with recombination and inversion and an uneven distribution of repeat sequences. T. parvula genome structure and DNA sequences were compared with orthologous regions from Arabidopsis and publicly available bacterial artificial chromosome sequences from Thellungiella salsuginea (previously Thellungiella halophila). The three-way comparison of sequences, from one abiotic stress-sensitive species and two tolerant species, revealed extensive sequence conservation and microcolinearity, but grouping Thellungiella species separately from Arabidopsis. However, the T. parvula segments are distinguished from …

Assessment Of Glycoprotein Interactions With 4-[(2-Aminoethyl)Carbamoyl] Phenylboronic Acid Surfaces Using Surface Plasmon Resonance Spectroscopy, Jennifer Mac Alindong De Guzman, Steven A. Soper, Robin L. Mccarley

Faculty Publications

Reported here are analyses of the interactions between a select group of solution-phase glycoproteins and a unique boronic acid capture surface. The boronic acid derivative, 4-[(2-aminoethyl)carbamoyl]phenylboronic acid, AECPBA, was synthesized and then immobilized on carboxymethyl dextran surfaces using simple coupling methods. From surface plasmon resonance spectroscopy responses, it is found that model glycoproteins interact strongly with the AECPBA surface and subsequently can be readily released from the AECPBA surface using borate buffer. A striking difference between the glycoproteins fetuin and asialofetuin (desialylated fetuin), in terms of glycoprotein binding to the AECPBA surface, indicates that the interaction of glycoproteins with the …

We longitudinally explored the relationship of body size and adiponectin levels in 393 community-dwelling Afro-Jamaicans. Adiponectin levels were greater in women, increased with age and declined with abdominal adiposity. Multivariate regression analyses suggest that subcutaneous fat in women may contribute significantly to the variance in their adiponectin levels. © 2010 Elsevier Ireland Ltd.
