Turkish Journal of Zoology

The distribution of C-heterochromatin blocks and nucleolar organizer regions (NORs) in the Taurus ground squirrel from Turkey was studied. The karyotype of Spermophilus taurensis comprised 40 chromosomes, the fundamental chromosome number (NF) was 80, and there were 76 autosomal arms (NFa). All autosomes and the X chromosome had pericentromeric C-heterochromatin, whereas the Y chromosome appeared to be entirely heterochromatic. NORs were observed in the terminal regions of the short arm of 2 pairs of submetacentric and 2 pairs of subtelocentric chromosomes. All the NORs were homomorphic and of medium size. Notes On Some Egyptian Lacertidae, Including A New Subspecies Of Mesalina, Involving The Seligmann Effect, Yehudah Leopold Werner, Shoshana Ashkenazi

Turkish Journal of Zoology

These notes on some Egyptian lacertid lizards contribute to faunal data for the planning of biodiversity conservation. Mesalina bahaeldini curatorum n. subsp. is described from Suez, characterized by coloration and larger (fewer) body scales. Range extensions are documented for Acanthodactylus aegyptius, Mesalina olivieri, and M. rubropunctata. The previously reported occurrence of A. opheodurus in Sinai is doubted. The fact that the M. b. curatorum types were collected in the 1820s demonstrates the importance of museum collections.

A Preliminary Study Of The Freshwater Fauna Of Testate Amoebae Of Southeast Azerbaijan, Nataly Snegovaya, Ilham Alekperov

Turkish Journal of Zoology

During 2005-2007, 75 species of the freshwater testate amoebae were found in the vicinities of Lenkoran (SE Azerbaijan). The morphology of 14 species is described. One genus and 3 species are new to science (Difflugia pisciformis sp.n., D. pseudoclaviformis sp.n., Lenkorania gen.n., Pseudodifflugia magna sp.n.). Eleven species are new for the fauna of the Caucasus and Azerbaijan.

Grandidierella Trispinosa, A New Species Of Amphipod From The Karachi Coast, Pakistan (Crustacea: Amphipoda: Aoridae), Hala Bano, Quddusi Bashir Kazmi

Grandidierella trispinosa sp. nov., the first species of the genus Grandidierella Coutiére, 1904 from Pakistan, is described from specimens collected at Sandspit backwater, west of Karachi. The new species is illustrated and compared with allied species. The holotype is housed in the Marine Reference Collection and Resource Centre, University of Karachi.

A new species, Cryptognathus ayyildizi sp. nov. is described and illustrated. Raphignathus bathursti Meyer and Ryke, 1960 (Raphignathidae), and Cheylostigmaeus californicus Summers and Ehara, 1965 (Stigmaeidae) are redescribed, and are new records for the Turkish fauna. Their worldwide distribution is also given.

Sixty-three species belonging to 16 genera and 8 tribes collected from different ecosystems of Turkey between 1979 and 2007 were examined. Insects from 4 genera, Streblocera Westwood, Chrysopophthorus Goidanich, Elasmosoma Ruthe, and Marshiella Shaw, and the tribe Neoneurini Bengtsson were recorded for the first time in Turkey. Twenty-two species that had not previously been found in Turkey were observed in this study. Each of the 8 phytogeographical provinces in Turkey has a different Euphorinae faunal composition. Ten monogonont rotifer species new for the Turkish fauna discovered in 2007 are discussed: Cephalodella delicata Wulfert, C. cf. forceps Donner, C. misgurnus Wulfert, Dipleuchlanis propatula (Gosse), Encentrum limicola Otto, E. mustela (Milne), Lecane aculeate (Jakubski), L. paradoxa (Steinecke), Notommata glyphura Wulfert, and Proales similis de Beauchamp. Eight are widely distributed, but C. cf. forceps Donner and L. paradoxa (Steinecke) have been recorded only from the Palearctic. Important parts of the trophi structure of some species are shown using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Dissolved oxygen, electrical conductivity, pH, and water temperature were also measured.

Twenty-five species of Cephidae are reported from Turkey based on literature records and specimens collected mainly from Central Anatolia. Of these Cephus fumipennis Eversmann, C. nigrinus Thomson, C. pulcher Tischbein, C. rjabovi Dovnar-Zapolskij, C. sareptanus Dovnar-Zapolskij, C. spinipes (Panzer), Calameuta (Calameuta) filiformis (Eversmann), C. (Calameuta) punctata (Klug), Hartigia linearis (Schrank), and H. xanthostoma (Eversmann) are recorded for the first time both in Central Anatolia and Turkey. A checklist of the family, including new records, is provided. Distribution patterns of the species in relation to the last glacial age are discussed.

Scale insects in cultivated and non-cultivated areas in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus were surveyed between 2005 and 2007. This study showed that Diaspididae and Coccidae were the most common families, with total numbers of 23 and 13 species, respectively. The remaining families contained 1 to 4 species. A total of 41 freshwater ostracod species belonging to 21 genera was collected from 144 different aquatic bodies in the Bolu region during the summer of 2006. The genus Schellencandona and 12 species (Candona weltneri, C. sanociensis, C. lactea, Fabaeformiscandona cf. breuili, F. balatonica, F. brevicornis, F. protzi, F. latens, Schellencandona cf. belgica, Pseudocandona cf. semicognita, Potamocypris similis, and P. smaragdina) are new for the Turkish Ostracoda fauna. Additionally, 5 other species (Herpetocypris brevicaudata, Heterocypris salina, H. rotundata, Cyclocypris laevis, Trajancypris serrata) are new for Bolu. Turkish Journal of Zoology

The distribution of nucleolar organizer regions (NORs) in Cricetulus migratorius and Meriones tristrami from Central Anatolia was determined. In the karyotype of Cricetulus migratorius the diploid number, fundamental number, and fundamental autosomal number are 22, 44, and 40, respectively. The diploid number, fundamental number, and fundamental autosomal number of Meriones tristrami are 72, 84, and 80, respectively. In Cricetulus migratorius, NORs occur in the telomeric regions of metacentric and subtelocentric autosome pairs. Furthermore, terminally located NORs in metacentric and acrocentric autosomes of Meriones tristrami are presented in this present paper.

This study compared the protein, lipid, and glycogen reserves in recently emerged unfed female and male Bracon hebetor Say (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) to those in 5- and 10-day-old wasps fed honey. Galleria mellonella (Linnaeus) (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae) and Ephestia kuehniella (Zeller) (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae) were used as host species. The mean level of protein in both sexes increased significantly from emergence to day 5, and then returned to emergence levels on day 10 in females, but remained constant in males during the same period. Scaldfish (Arnoglossus laterna) (n = 1892) were caught in İzmir Bay (Aegean Sea) from January 2005 to December 2006. Total length and weight of all specimens ranged from 3.9 to 16.0 cm and from 0.47 to 41.63 g, respectively. The overall ratio of females to males was 1:1.91. Occurrence Of Trypanosoma Sp. In Wild African Sharptooth Catfish (Clarias Gariepinus Burchell, 1822) In The River Asi (North-Eastern Mediterranean), Turkey, Egemen Konaş, Ercüment Genç, Gali̇p Kaya, Cavi̇t Erol

Turkish Journal of Zoology

Fifteen African sharptooth catfish (Clarias gariepinus Burchell, 1822) were collected from the River Asi (River Orontes) in Antakya (Hatay, Turkey) in November 2007, and fish blood samples were examined for the presence of blood parasites. The existence of infection with Trypanosoma (hemoparasite) was identified in 13 out of the 15 fish specimens. Currently there are no records of the presence of any species of Trypanosoma infecting Clarias gariepinus in Anatolia. Thus this study is the first report of Trypanosoma sp. infections in Clarias gariepinus in Turkey.

Media piracy, in Malaysia, is organised through illicit negotiations between a dominant crime syndicate and consumers, street-corner gang leaders, the Malaysian police, custom officers and directors of the Malaysian Film Censorship Board. These key social actors who crossover class, race, religion, gang membership, and bridge porous legitimate and illegitimate commercial and political sectors of society establish a mutually collaborative relationship by negotiating their asymmetrical social capital, according to a conventional cost-benefit analysis. Contextual analyses of these illicit interactions identify criminal enterprise opportunities and plot the interactive progress of enterprise as it unfolds, against models of organisational and functional inter-connection. Because many college students engage in low levels of physical activity, the current study used a qualitative framework to interview 11 college students to examine the meaning physically active college students assign to the practice of fitness and health. Students discussed the importance of healthy eating, but that it was difficult to accomplish at college. Additionally, students intertwined health and fitness with physical appearance and attractiveness. In particular, the media shaped many of their perceptions of health and fitness. Implications of these findings to policy making in higher education, in particular wellness programming, are highlighted.

Many non-human species imitate the behavior of others, and dolphins seem particularly adept at this form of observational learning. Evidence for observational learning in wild dolphins is rare, given the difficulty of observing individual wild animals in sufficient detail to eliminate other possible explanations of purported imitation. Consequently, much of the evidence supporting observational learning in dolphins has involved animals in captive settings. This research suggests that dolphins have an affinity for mimicry, and that they are more successful at observational learning if they choose to imitate another rather than being asked to do so. Attachment styles, social skills, and depression were studied in 93 college women using the Relationship Questionnaire (K. Bartholomew & L M. Horowitz, 1991), the Beck Depression Inventory-ll (AT. Beck, R.A. Steer, & G. K. Brown, 1996), and the Interpersonal Competence Questionnaire (D. Buhrmester,W. Furman, M.T.Wittenberg, & H.T. Reis, 1988).The self and other attachment models and the social skills of negative assertion, self-disclosure, and conflict management all correlated with depression. Conflict management partially mediated the relationship between attachment self-model and depression. Implications for counseling are discussed.

Wastewater treatment plants rank second to agricultural runoff in the top ten major pollution sources to U.S. surface waters. Such nutrient-rich inputs can degrade aquatic ecosystems by accelerating eutrophication events, especially in summer months when surface water flows are low. Alternative treatment practices, modeled after natural ecosystem processes, could reduce nutrient inputs to surface waters while accumulating biomass and sequestering atmospheric carbon dioxide. I designed and implemented an alternative treatment strategy, using effluent to fertilize trees at the Missoula Wastewater Treatment Facility.
