Organizational Support, Perceived Social Support, And Intent To Turnover Among Psychiatric Nurses: A Mixed Methods Study., Beverly Jean Myers
Organizational Support, Perceived Social Support, And Intent To Turnover Among Psychiatric Nurses: A Mixed Methods Study., Beverly Jean Myers
All ETDs from UAB
Nurse turnover compromises the quality of patient care and leads to an increase in organizational costs. Nurse turnover is defined as the intent to leave one's current job position either to transfer to another unit within the organization or to terminate employment with the organization. Few studies have examined the role social support received at work as well as at home, personal characteristics and work factors play in guiding psychiatric nurses' decisions to leave a current nursing position (turnover). The overall purpose of this mixed-methods sequential explanatory study was to explore factors that contribute to psychiatric nurses' intent to turnover. …
Analyzing The Role Of Ck2 And Pp2a In Drosophila Position Effect Variegation, Swati Banerjee
Analyzing The Role Of Ck2 And Pp2a In Drosophila Position Effect Variegation, Swati Banerjee
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The results of the investigation into the role of CK2 and PP2A in Drosophila position effect variegation (PEV) and chromatin modification are presented here. PEV is seen when a gene normally found in euchromatin is placed in close proximity to heterochromatin. The propensity of heterochromatin to spread down the chromosome often results in inactivation of the displaced gene by compaction into heterochromatin. The study presented here utilized two different PEV reporter genes for investigating the role of two posttranslational modifying enzymes, the kinase CK2 and the phosphatase PP2A in chromatin formation. The reporter genes used in this study encode for …
Modeling Central Nervous System Involvement In Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia, Stephen Matthew Akers
Modeling Central Nervous System Involvement In Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia, Stephen Matthew Akers
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Infiltration of the central nervous system (CNS) by leukemic blasts represents one of the problematic disease manifestations of acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL). Modern prophylactic measures have decreased the rate of CNS involvement in ALL. However, they produce adverse side effects, including cognitive dysfunction, seizures, and growth retardation, which have unique implications in pediatric patients that constitute the bulk of ALL cases. While there has been significant research into how ALL cells are nurtured in sanctuary sites, such as the bone marrow, there is a paucity of literature reporting on the mechanisms through which ALL cells migrate into the CNS and …
The Effects Of Fungal Pigments On Matrix-Assisted Laser Desorption/Ionization Time-Of-Flight Mass Spectral Peak Formation, Amanda Dawn Buskirk
The Effects Of Fungal Pigments On Matrix-Assisted Laser Desorption/Ionization Time-Of-Flight Mass Spectral Peak Formation, Amanda Dawn Buskirk
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Fungi are ubiquitous microorganisms that commonly cause diseases with high mortality rates in immunocompromised hosts. In order to successfully treat the infection and subsequently decrease mortality rates, it is necessary to rapidly identify the causal organism(s) and promptly begin the proper treatment. Common identification methods, such as viable culture characterization, are often time consuming or not species-specific, as is the case with many molecular or immunodiagnostic assays. Matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS) has been used to discriminate between many clinically relevant microorganisms. Recently, MALDI-TOF MS has been used to discriminate between monilaceous fungal species, however, darkly pigmented …
Selenium Removal By Nano-Magnetite Impregnated Diatomaceous Earth, Isabel Cardona
Selenium Removal By Nano-Magnetite Impregnated Diatomaceous Earth, Isabel Cardona
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The purpose of this study was to remove selenium from aqueous solution using nano-magnetite impregnated diatomaceous earth (DE) as an adsorbent. The adsorbent was prepared at the laboratory with a ratio of magnetite/DE of 10%. Batch adsorption experiments were conducted to evaluate the effects of pH, temperature, adsorbent concentration, selenium speciation, contact time and presence of competing anions on selenium removal efficiency in conjunction with studies on adsorption kinetics, isotherms, and adsorptive thermodynamics. Rapid adsorption occurred within 30 min and selenium uptake decreased with increase in temperature. Low pH values (i.e. 2--4) favored selenium adsorption as expected for anion adsorption …
State Spatial Practices And Uneven Development: Flexible Rescaling In Appalachia, Jacquelyn Jordon Core
State Spatial Practices And Uneven Development: Flexible Rescaling In Appalachia, Jacquelyn Jordon Core
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Geographic theories regarding uneven development, including Neil Smith's convergence of Marxist theory and spatial development and David Harvey's development of scalar fix and later conceptual development of the process of capital accumulation, historically have focused primarily on how and why uneven development occurs. Research to date has provided only a cursory examination of what role, if any, the state plays in impacting uneven development, has not endeavored to characterize the state as an active, purposeful spatial player in the process of uneven development, and has not conceptualized how the state impacts uneven development through spatial practices, if the state does …
Sex Segregation And Young Adults' Gender-Typed Attitudes About Occupations, Lisa M. Didonato
Sex Segregation And Young Adults' Gender-Typed Attitudes About Occupations, Lisa M. Didonato
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The present study examined the relation between the prevalence of sex segregation, or the division of men and women within social interactions, and young adults' gender-typed attitudes. Specifically, gender-typed attitudes about the occupations that are preferred for the self and viewed as appropriate for others were investigated. The objectives of the current study were partially based on the suggestion that gender-typed attitudes may be a consequence, as well as a cause, of sex segregation (McHale, Kim, Whiteman, & Crouter, 2004). The gender-typed personality traits of expressivity (i.e., traits typically associated with femininity; e.g., being emotional) and instrumentality (i.e., traits typically …

Preliminary Study On The Reliability Of Afix Tracker For Lip Print Examination, Kelli E. Edmiston
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Lip prints have been proposed as a type of impression evidence with similar issues as fingerprints, but with greater scrutiny by the forensic community due to a lack of history in using this type of impression as evidence. A survey of 11 questions about lip print examination was sent to 63 members of the Chesapeake Bay Division of the International Association for Identification (CBD-IAI) to gather opinions from active forensic scientists in determining an appropriate direction for this study. The responses were presented at the spring CBD-IAI 2009 conference to generate more discussion and to achieve greater awareness. A method …

Parenting Practices Mediate Parenting Stress And Child Inhibited, Shy Behavior, Ying Dong
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Parenting practices were investigated as mediators between parenting stress and child inhibited, shy behavior. Parenting stress was also examined as a moderator between parenting practices and child inhibited, shy behavior. Twenty-seven preschool-aged children (14 boys, 13 girls; mean age =3.5 years) and their mothers (mean age =34 years) participated in the study. Mothers completed a battery of questionnaires to assess parenting stress, parenting practices, and child inhibited, shy behavior. Regression analyses were conducted and it was found that parenting practices do not mediate the relation between parenting stress and inhibited, shy behavior. However, there appears to be an indirect relation …

Site Characterization Of Hemlock Stands At Allegheny National Forest, Daniel Farcas
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Eastern Hemlock Tsuga canadensis is a coniferous tree native to eastern North America. It ranges from northeastern Minnesota eastward through southern Quebec, and from the southern Appalachian Mountains to northern Georgia and Alabama.;This majestic tree is threatened with elimination by an invasive species Hemlock Woolly Adelgid (HWA) Adelges tsugae introduced in the USA in 1924, which is believed to be a native of Asia. HWA reduces shoot growth, provokes branch dieback, and eventually tree death.;One strategy to help mitigate the fast spread of HWA is to determine what may cause host potential resistance to HWA and how to use this …
Extraction Of Metal Sensitizers Under Physiologically Relevant Conditions, Matthew G. Duling
Extraction Of Metal Sensitizers Under Physiologically Relevant Conditions, Matthew G. Duling
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Metal and metal alloys are critical components of high-tech applications. Beryllium (Be), chromium (Cr), and nickel (Ni) are among the most economically important metals for high-tech applications because of their extraordinary physical properties. These metals pose two different problems for workers who work with them: (1) allergic contact dermatitis from exposure to Cr and Ni, which is widely accepted to account for a significant percentage of occupational skin irritations and (2) possible systemic sensitization from skin contact with airborne Be. Proper assessment of skin contact with allergenic metals during work is difficult. Current practices for the assessment of skin exposure …

Atmospheric levels of carbon dioxide (CO2) have increased at a rate of about 1 to 2 parts per million (ppm) per year to its current level of approximately 388 ppm. Mitigation efforts are being deployed around the world in all possible ways to combat these accelerating levels of carbon dioxide. The study presented in this dissertation deals with the ground response caused by geologic sequestration of carbon dioxide. The ground response can be used as a tool for long-term monitoring of carbon storage in geological formations.;Unmineable coal seams have been identified as promising reservoirs for large-scale sequestration of carbon dioxide. …
Extracellular Matrix Mediated Cartilage Regeneration: A Novel Three-Dimensional In Vitro Microenvironment To Facilitate Cell Expansion And Chondrogenesis, Fan He
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Joint articular cartilage is vulnerable for degenerative disease after trauma due to the limited self-healing ability. Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) are considered a promising source for cartilage repair and regenerative medicine because of their excellent capacities of self-renewal and multipotent differentiation. Conventional in vitro expansion system, however, limits the utilization of MSCs for cartilage regeneration because in monolayer culture MSCs rapidly lose their self-renewal ability and differentiation potential. The lack of proper microenvironment in the current two-dimensional expansion system is attributed to the loss of self-renewal and multipotent differentiation in MSCs. Three-dimensional (3D) cell-deposited extracellular matrix (ECM) provides a novel …
On The Mechanisms Underlying Neural Repression By E(Spl)M8 In Drosophila, Bhaskar Kahali
On The Mechanisms Underlying Neural Repression By E(Spl)M8 In Drosophila, Bhaskar Kahali
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Notch signaling is an evolutionary conserved pathway that mediates binary cell-fate specification throughout animal development. Through a process termed lateral inhibition, Notch signaling drives two equipotent cells to adopt distinct fates. Binary cell-fate determination has been exceptionally well studied during Drosophila neurogenesis, particularly, in eye and bristle development. In the eye, Notch mediates the selection of R8 photoreceptors from clusters of R8 precursors by antagonizing the activity of the proneural activator Atonal (Ato). In the bristle, Notch drives the selection of the sensory organ precursors (SOP's) from a group of equipotential cells that expressed the proneural activators encoded by the …

The Influence Of Anxiety, Depression, And Negative Affect On Recall Of Dental Pain, Brandon N. Kyle
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Research suggests mood can influence recall of emotionally-relevant information. Yet, despite multiple studies examining the association of anxiety and exaggerated prediction and recall of dental pain, the influence of other moods on prediction and recall of dental pain remains poorly investigated. Further, the potential moderation and mediation effects for dental fear, fear of pain, and mood state have not been properly researched. The present study investigated variables associated with predicted pain (pain expected during the dental procedure) and recalled pain in oral surgery patients. Data were provided by a sample of 157 patients undergoing tooth extraction under local anesthetic. Patients …
Regulation Of Anoikis By Ankyrin Complexes, Sanjeev Kumar
Regulation Of Anoikis By Ankyrin Complexes, Sanjeev Kumar
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Anoikis is a subset of apoptosis, suppressed by cell-extracellular matrix association. It is a safeguard mechanism against tumor metastasis. The present study was designed to understand the role of cortical cytoskeletal protein ankyrin-G and its interacting proteins in anoikis. E-cadherin and ankyrin-G are function partners and during epithelial-mesenchymal-transition (EMT), both gets downregulated. During cell-extracellular matrix dissociation, ankyrin-G shifts to cytoplasm from cytoskeleton and loses spectrin interaction. Overexpression of ankyrin-G induced apoptosis in death domain dependent manner, promoted by the presence of ankyrin-G death domain interacting partner, RIP1 (Receptor Interacting Protein with death domain). Ankyrin-G also interacted with a MAGE family …

Mathematical Modeling In Understanding Nfkb Signaling Pathway, Huanling Liu
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Chronic diseases, cancers and diabetes are associated with dysregulation of many biochemical cues. These biochemical cues are proteins that regulate cellular activity migration and death. The synthesis of these proteins is regulated by nuclear transcription factors. One of the most studied transcription factor is nuclear factor kappa B (NFkappaB). Many different proteins have been identified that regulate the activity of NFkappaB. Yet, how these proteins regulate NFkappaB is still unclear.;Understanding the regulation of NFkappaB is important for developing drugs to treat these diseases. Our long term goal is to understand the mechanisms that regulate NFkappaB activity. The goal of this …

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
American ginseng (Panax quinquefolius L.), is an economically important medicinal plant native to eastern deciduous forests of North America. Like many other medicinal plants worldwide, P. quinquefolius is mainly collected from the wild. And because of its growing demand, abundance of wild populations is threatened with over harvesting. In West Virginia, P. quinquefolius is available both in cultivation and in the wild. Even though P. quinquefolius occurs in all 55 counties in West Virginia, patterns of its harvesting and cultivation vary across the state. As described in chapter 2, the genetic diversity and population structure of P. quinquefolius under two …

Sensitivity Of Semantic Signatures In Text Mining, Sri Ramya Peddada
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The rapid development of the Internet and the ability to store data relatively inexpensively has contributed to an information explosion that did not exist a few years ago. Just a few keystrokes on search engines on any given subject will provide more web pages than any time before. As the amount of data available to us is so overwhelming, the ability to extract relevant information from it remains a challenge.;Since 80% of the available data stored world wide is text, we need advanced techniques to process this textual data and extract useful in formation. Text mining is one such process …
Brook Trout Response To Canopy And Large Woody Debris Manipulations In Appalachian Streams, Jonathan Ma. Niles
Brook Trout Response To Canopy And Large Woody Debris Manipulations In Appalachian Streams, Jonathan Ma. Niles
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The forested riparian area along many central Appalachian streams contains large volumes of harvestable timber. Best management practices (BMP) and streamside management zones (SMZ) have been developed to minimize the impacts of riparian timber harvest. Large woody debris (LWD) is an important component of forested streams and its role in chemical, biological, and physical processes in streams is complex. The extraction of timber within the streamside management zone reduces the amount of material available for aquatic structure.;Three-250 m study reaches were established on eight Appalachian headwater streams. Four of the streams were assigned the treatment of having a 50% basal …

Finally, characterization of a coating technique to alter the surface charge of the nanofluidic element from anionic to cationic is presented.
Low-Power Analog Circuits For Sub-Band Speech Processing, Anvesh Kumar Singireddy
Low-Power Analog Circuits For Sub-Band Speech Processing, Anvesh Kumar Singireddy
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The need for efficient electronics has been increasing by the day, as have the constraints on power and size of the devices. Also the increase in use of mobile and wearable electronics has been leading to innovative methods to conserve power and increase functionality. The traditional approach of signal processing heavily relies on the Digital Signal Processing (DSP) hardware to perform most of the tasks, which has lead to power-hungry circuits. Use of analog front-end devices could prove to be efficient, since most of the real-world data is analog and since the DSP could be spared for more application-specific tasks …
Intergenerational Transmission Of Health-Promoting Behaviors: Examining Participation In Physical Activity Between Middle-Aged Mothers And Their Younger Adult Children, Sarah T. Stahl
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Research has provided considerable evidence that participation in regular physical activity is associated with numerous physical and mental health benefits (Penedo & Dahn, 2005). Despite public health efforts to increase the activity levels adults, only 25% of the U.S. adult population is regularly active and nearly 60% remains sedentary (US Department of Health and Human Services [USDHHS], 2008). A small, but growing, area of research has examined physical activity from an intergenerational or dyadic perspective that considers how involvements in close, personal relationships influence levels of physical activity. In a sample of middle-aged mothers and their younger adult children, the …
