Diversity And Antioxidant Activity Of Trametes Fr. In Malaysia., Noraswati Mohd Nor Rashid

Student Works (2010-2019)

Research on antioxidant properties as a natural antioxidant, particularly in polypores, have been widely done since the past decade. It is known that antioxidant capacity is essential in protecting organisms and cells from damage brought on by oxidative which is believed to be the cause for ageing and degenerative diseases. In this study, biodiversity and antioxidant activity of Malaysian Trametes spp. which is from the group of polypores were investigated. Polypores were collected in Peninsular Malaysia forests from the year 2006 until 2007. The species were identified by taxonomic keys based on macromorphology and micromorphology analysis. Trametes hirsuta, T. pocas, …

A Systematic Study Of Fagraea Sensu Lato And A Revision Of The Peninsular Malaysian Taxa., Sugumaran Manickam

Student Works (2010-2019)

systematic study of the Peninsular Malaysian species of Fagraea sensu lato was undertaken. This was done in the light of recent revisionary work done for Borneo that documented 20 new species and demonstrated that previous species concepts for Fagraea were too broad. Parallel to this the distinction of the subgeneric groups recognised as sections, i.e., Cyrtophyllum, Fagraea and Racemosae, were investigated with molecular phylogenetic methods. Representative taxa from the Malay Peninsula and Borneo augmented by sequences from other taxa in the same subtribe and tribe were used in the molecular analysis. Gene sequences from ITS, trnL–F (trnL intron + trnL–F …

Student Works (2010-2019)

MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are small single-stranded non-protein-coding RNAs of about 22 nucleotides that play an important role in post-transcriptional gene regulation in animals and plants by targeting mRNAs for direct cleavage of mRNAs or repression of mRNA translation. In this study, a homology search based approach has been used for identifying the novel miRNA genes of Musa sp. using the BLAST program with a total of 42,978 Musa sp. expressed sequence tags (EST) were compared to a total of 959 previously known plant miRNA sequences. Forty-seven candidate miRNA with homology to previously known miRNAs were identified. By using the mFold3.1 program, …

Student Works (2010-2019)

The global shrimp farming industry had a rapid growth in the 1980s due to the high demand for shrimp. Apart from the destruction of mangroves and wetlands, the intensive operation of shrimp aquaculture deteriorated the water quality in the region. Variety of chemicals and biological products were used to prevent the outbreaks of diseases in the intensively managed shrimp ponds. Pesticides were used as disinfectands to kill unwanted organisms in the pond. SPME-GC-ECD method was developed for the determination of azinphos-ethyl, chlorphyrifos-methyl, diazinon, dichlorvos, endosulfan-I, endosulfan-II, endosulfan sulfate and malathion from water samples of shrimp aquaculture area in Manjung district, …

Student Works (2010-2019)

In this study, a simple method using Murashige and Skoog basal medium (1962) supplemented with 6-BA alone was developed for direct multiple shoots induction from shoot base culture of C. willisii. Shoots proliferation and elongation were achieved on a single medium without the need of subculturing. The optimum concentration of 6-BA for direct shoots regeneration of C. willisii was investigated. It was found to be 6 mg/ L. Optimum media was then used for regenerate and propagate of transformed C. willisii. On the other hand, ransformation of C. willisii with Agrobacterium tumefaciens strain LBA4404 harbouring pCAMBIA1304 was performed. Effects on …

Lempoyang is widely used as a folk medicine in Asian countries such as Malaysia, Indonesia, India and Taiwan. Zerumbone, a cyclic sesqueterpene found to be the major and main bioactive compound that gives great potential in medicinal purposes especially in the treatment of chronic diseases based on recent reports. Recently, it was found that zerumbone inhibited the growth of human leukemia cell line, HL-60 cell. Even though there are so many great values contain in the lempoyang but it is hard to obtain …

Effect Of Selected Physical And Chemical Parameters On Crystal Violet Decolorization By Immobilized Laccase., Nur Atiqah Ismail Jan 2010

Effect Of Selected Physical And Chemical Parameters On Crystal Violet Decolorization By Immobilized Laccase., Nur Atiqah Ismail

Student Works (2010-2019)

Synthetic dyes are used for coloration of various materials like textiles, leather and food. Wastewater from dyeing industries constitutes a threat to the environment as many synthetic dyes are often toxic, mutagenic and carcinogenic. Besides, light absorption is hindered by the dyes run-off creating problems to photosynthetic aquatic plants and algae. Biodegradation of waste dyestuff with enzymes provides a viable alternative compared to the often expensive physical/chemical methods. Laccase from Trametes versicolor was chosen in this study as it exhibits low substrate specificity and high ability to oxidize many pollutants which suggested its potential in wastewater treatment and bioremediation. The …

Sulfur K-Edge Photo-Fragmentation Of Ethylene Sulfide, Wayne C. Stolte, Gunnar Ohrwall Jan 2010

Sulfur K-Edge Photo-Fragmentation Of Ethylene Sulfide, Wayne C. Stolte, Gunnar Ohrwall

Chemistry and Biochemistry Faculty Research

We have investigated the photofragmentation properties of the three-membered ring heterocyclic molecule ethylene sulfide or thiirane, C2H4S, by time-of-flight mass spectroscopy. Positive ions have been collected as a function of photon energy around the S K ionization threshold. Branching ratios were derived for all detected ions, which are informative of the decay dynamics and photofragmentation patterns of the core-excited species. We present a new assignment of the spectral features around the S K-edge.

Risk, Everyday Intutions, And The Institutional Value Of Tort Law, Govind Persad Jan 2010

Risk, Everyday Intutions, And The Institutional Value Of Tort Law, Govind Persad

Publications

This Note offers a normative critique of cost-benefit analysis, one informed by deontological moral theory, in the context of the debate over whether tort litigation or a non-tort approach is the appropriate response to mass harm. The first Part argues that the difference between lay and expert intuitions about risk and harm often reflects a difference in normative judgments about the existing facts, rather than a difference in belief about what facts exist, which makes the lay intuitions more defensible. The second Part considers how tort has dealt with this divergence between lay and expert perspectives. It also evaluates how …

Author Stephenie Meyer forever altered the cultural existence of Quileute Indians when she wrote them into her Twilight novels. Now a veritable global phenomenon complete with books, movies, and affiliated merchandise, the Twilight series depicts young, male members of the tribe as vampire-fighting werewolves who ferociously defend a peace and territorial treaty made with local bloodsuckers. In reality, the Quileute Tribe consists of approximately 700 Indians, many of whom live on a remote reservation in the Pacific Northwest, a tiny parcel of the once vast Quileute territory. Since Twilight's unprecedented international success, the Quileute have been overwhelmed with fans …

Climate Change, Fragmentation, And The Challenges Of Global Environmental Law: Elements Of A Post-Copenhagen Assemblage, William Boyd

Publications

The 2009 United Nations climate conference in Copenhagen has been widely viewed as a failure -a referendum in the eyes of many on the top-down, comprehensive approach to climate governance embodied in the Kyoto Protocol and carried forward in efforts to negotiate a successor regime. Despite a modest agreement on future work toward a new agreement, the most recent climate meeting in Cancún, Mexico reinforces this view, underscoring the conclusion that Copenhagen represents an important inflection point for international climate policy. Although much of the post-Copenhagen commentary has correctly identified various problems, even fatal flaws, with the process, very little …
