A Probabilistic Cell Model In Background Corrected Image Sequences For Single Cell Analysis, Nezamoddin N. Kachouie, Paul Fieguth, Eric Jervis

Mathematics and System Engineering Faculty Publications

Background: Methods of manual cell localization and outlining are so onerous that automated tracking methods would seem mandatory for handling huge image sequences, nevertheless manual tracking is, astonishingly, still widely practiced in areas such as cell biology which are outside the influence of most image processing research. The goal of our research is to address this gap by developing automated methods of cell tracking, localization, and segmentation. Since even an optimal frame-to-frame association method cannot compensate and recover from poor detection, it is clear that the quality of cell tracking depends on the quality of cell detection within each frame. Methods: …

Why Beauty Still Cannot Be Measured, Ossi Naukkarinen Jan 2010

Why Beauty Still Cannot Be Measured, Ossi Naukkarinen

Contemporary Aesthetics (Journal Archive)

This article focuses on the question of whether the latest results achieved in sciences such as evolution studies and brain research can help us understand the nature of aesthetic judgments. It suggests that such approaches may offer interesting insights for understanding many problems in aesthetics, but for clarifying aesthetic judgments one needs a philosophical point of view. Aesthetic judgments cannot be proven right or wrong by scientific methods, and beauty or other aesthetic qualities cannot be directly measured. The “method” of both making and analyzing aesthetic judgments is discussion, and the article clarifies why this is still the case, even …

Terrorism's Proscription And Core Elements Of An Objective Definition, Jordan J. Paust Jan 2010

Terrorism's Proscription And Core Elements Of An Objective Definition, Jordan J. Paust

Santa Clara Journal of International Law

This essay identifies core elements of an objective definition of terrorism as well as various words and phrases that others have used that are not part of an objective definition. In particular, an objective definition of terrorism must involve an intent of the perpetrator to produce a terror outcome as well as the existence of a terror outcome. The international community has recognized that terrorism is an international crime at least since 1985, but the community has been unable to agree on a definition or various core elements of a definition. This essay provides a possible basis for agreement by …
