Analysis Of The Suppressive Effects By Reovirus On Rotavirus Replication During Co-Infections, Melody Lyn Kiesling-Barrager
Analysis Of The Suppressive Effects By Reovirus On Rotavirus Replication During Co-Infections, Melody Lyn Kiesling-Barrager
Biology Dissertations - Archive
Reovirus and rotavirus are both members of the Reoviridae family and commonly occur in children. Rotavirus induced diarrhea is one of the leading causes of death in children under the age of five worldwide. Identifying new treatment options for an unnecessarily deadly diarrheal infection caused by rotavirus would benefit hundreds of thousands of children a year. Currently, only oral rehydration therapy or costly vaccinations are available to treat or prevent rotavirus diarrhea. Even with their prevalence, little is known about how these two viruses (reovirus and rotavirus) interact when co-infecting cells. Determining these interactions could lead to new treatment options …
The Current State Of Hormonal And Nonhormonal Male Contraception, Catherine Buchanan-Mcgrath
The Current State Of Hormonal And Nonhormonal Male Contraception, Catherine Buchanan-Mcgrath
Theses & ETDs
The unintended pregnancy (UIP) rate in the United States is nearly 50%. To reduce UIP, a diverse range of contraceptive options should be available to men and women. Studies have shown that the availability of a diverse range of contraceptive options for both men and women increases the rate of correct and consistent usage, and may contribute to a decrease in the unintended UIP rate. The female contraceptive market is vast and includes the female condom, hysterectomy, and steroids delivered via pills, patches, vaginal rings, implants, injections, and Intra-Uterine Devices. Male-directed methods are comparatively less diverse and are limited to …
Purification And Characterization Of C. Elegans Mitochondrial Malate Dehydrogenase, Emma Cassidy
Purification And Characterization Of C. Elegans Mitochondrial Malate Dehydrogenase, Emma Cassidy
Theses & ETDs
C. elegans Malate Dehydrogenase (MDH-1) was isolated and purified from E. coli cells using an Intein Mediated Purification with an Affinity Chitin-binding Tag (IMPACT) system (NEB). C. elegans is a small nematode worm which has long been considered an ideal model organism for scientific research due to its heartiness, transparency and relative simplicity. Malate dehydrogenase (MDH), which catalyzes the reversible conversion of malate into oxaloacetate, is a protein common to almost all living cells. It has been studied quite extensively due to its important role in several metabolic pathways, most notably the citric acid cycle. MDH has been characterized in …

Promoted Gender Roles In Heterosexual Teenage Dating 1950s And 2000s, Scarlett Taylor
Promoted Gender Roles In Heterosexual Teenage Dating 1950s And 2000s, Scarlett Taylor
Theses & ETDs
This thesis explores the gendered advice that dating guides and Seventeen Magazine give teenagers regarding heterosexual dating. Data, the points of advice, from four dating guides published between 1950 and 1959, as well as articles from Seventeen Magazine's Love Life section from 2007 to 2010, were coded for adherence to heteronormative standards, or the privileging of heterosexuality, a gender binary, and distinct gendered roles. It was found that the 1950s sample adhered strictly to these standards of traditional gender roles. Males were instructed to be active and assertive, while females were the passive receptors of this male action. Over fifty …

Race, Class, And Whiteness In Gifted And Talented Identification: A Case Study, Kathleen Barlow, C. Elaine Dunbar
Race, Class, And Whiteness In Gifted And Talented Identification: A Case Study, Kathleen Barlow, C. Elaine Dunbar
Anthropology and Museum Studies Faculty Scholarship
What began fifteen years ago as a volunteer effort to promote desegregation via a gifted and talented magnet school has become a case study analyzing inequalities in the identification of young children for gifted and talented services. We use Cheryl Harris’ (1993) argument that “whiteness” is a form of property that creates and maintains inequalities through the conjoining of race and class. We show how gifted and talented status meets the criteria of white property interests and is defended by recourse to law and policy. Efforts to improve identification of students for gifted services reveal that the implicit operation of …

Adapting To Aging In Place: An Assessment Of Residential Living Facility Resident's Frequency Of Physical Activity, Maggie L. Roe
Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects
Village Manor is medium sized independent retirement community in rural Kentucky. When the community was built in 1995, designers did not anticipate residents’ long term physical activity needs. In order to meet the needs of current and future residents, both resident physical activity levels and their expectations were examined. The Physical Activity Scale for Elderly (PASE) was administered (n = 23) to develop a profile of current physical activity. One focus group was held to develop themes relating to residents’ current physical activity program desires. Results showed that compared to the theoretical physical activity recommendations for this age group (mean …
Incorporation Of Europium (Iii) Coordination Compounds Into Silica Microspheres, Johnathan Nathanael Brantly
Incorporation Of Europium (Iii) Coordination Compounds Into Silica Microspheres, Johnathan Nathanael Brantly
Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects
The unique optical properties of silica microspheres and lanthanoid elements present the opportunity to adapt silica microspheres containing rare earth elements for novel optical applications. The research demonstrates the first example of incorporating insoluble lanthanoid coordination compounds into silica microspheres. The work explored the controlled synthesis of silica microspheres and the reaction conditions under which lanthanoid complexes can be incorporated into the microspheres. The environment of the coordinated lanthanoid ions before and after incorporation into silica microspheres was probed using spectroflurophotometry. The surface morphology of silica microspheres was characterized using atomic force microscopy (AFM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The …

Campus Architecture And Student Culture In American Higher Education, Alexandra R. Troxell
Campus Architecture And Student Culture In American Higher Education, Alexandra R. Troxell
Honors Theses
Human-environment interaction theory, as it specifically relates to architectural determinism, has an indispensible impact on student culture on college campuses. Under the assumptions of architectural determinism, this thesis examines the relationship between architecture and student culture on 30 American college campuses. Specifically, this thesis looks at uniformity of architectural style and color and the prevalence of traditional styles of architecture in relation to the institutions' campus cultures. The results of the study found that a significant relationship exists between student culture and uniformity of building color, but not between student culture and uniformity of style or the prevalence of traditional …
Subcellular Localization Of The Non-Structural Proteins 3c And 3cd Of The Honeybee Virus Deformed Wing Virus, Cierra Nichole Danko
Subcellular Localization Of The Non-Structural Proteins 3c And 3cd Of The Honeybee Virus Deformed Wing Virus, Cierra Nichole Danko
Honors Theses
Apis mellifera L., the European honeybee, is a crucial pollinator of many important agricultural crops in the United States. Recently, honeybee colonies have been affected by Colony Collapse Disorder (CCD), a disorder in which the colony fails due to the disappearance of a key functional group of worker bees. Though no direct causalrelationship has been confirmed, hives that experience CCD have been shown to have a high incidence of Deformed Wing Virus (DWV), a common honeybee virus. While the genome sequence and gene-order of DWV has been analyzed fairly recently, few other studies have been performed to understand the molecular …
The Causes Of Educational Differences In Fertility In Sub-Saharan Africa, John Bongaarts
The Causes Of Educational Differences In Fertility In Sub-Saharan Africa, John Bongaarts
Poverty, Gender, and Youth
This working paper presents an analytic framework that describes the chain of causation linking fertility to its multiple layers of determinants, then analyzes the causes of educational fertility differences in 30 sub-Saharan African countries using data from DHS surveys. The results demonstrate that education levels are positively associated with demand for and use of contraception and negatively associated with fertility and desired family size. In addition, there are differences by level of education in the relationships between indicators. As education rises, fertility is lower at a given level of contraceptive use, contraceptive use is higher at a given level of …

Health Consequences Of Violence Within Marriage: Need For Strengthening The Health Sector Response, Shireen J. Jejeebhoy, K.G. Santhya, Rajib Acharya
Poverty, Gender, and Youth
This policy brief provides a synthesis of available evidence of the magnitude of marital violence experienced by women, including married young women, in India, and the ways in which the experience of physical and sexual violence within marriage compromises health, with a focus on sexual, reproductive, and child health, as well as mental health. It argues for strengthening the health sector response to address the needs of women who have experienced marital violence. Findings underscore the urgent need to strengthen efforts to prevent the incidence of marital violence. Recommendations include: sscreening and referring women who experience marital violence, screening activities …

Understanding Adolescent Girls' Protection Strategies Against Hiv: An Exploratory Study In Urban Lusaka, Joseph Simbaya, Martha Brady, Allison Stone, Maya Vaughan-Smith
Poverty, Gender, and Youth
This report provides a descriptive analysis of how adolescent girls and young women in Lusaka, Zambia construct notions of risk and safety, perceive reproductive health and HIV risks, and identify behaviors and actions they can take to protect themselves. Findings suggests stronger social support networks, improved access to the range of reproductive health services and products, and safe and supportive spaces for girls would be beneficial. The report points to several areas for potential program attention, including more focused attention on the structural and environmental drivers of girls’ vulnerability.

Electromyographic Analysis Of Trunk Muscle Activation During A Throwing Pattern Following Rotator Cuff Mobilization, Aubrey L. Doede
Electromyographic Analysis Of Trunk Muscle Activation During A Throwing Pattern Following Rotator Cuff Mobilization, Aubrey L. Doede
CMC Senior Theses
Correct muscular activation of the body segments during an overhand throw is achieved when movement originates in the larger and more proximal legs and trunk and moves sequentially to the smaller, distal segments of the shoulder and arm. This sequence permits angular velocity to transfer progressively through the throw as part of an open kinetic chain. The athlete can summate angular velocity and segmental forces only if he is able to create a separation between the body segments during the movement pattern, and this separation is thus essential to effective segmental sequencing for activation of the trunk muscles to occur …
Adaptations And Continuities In The Use And Design Of Visual Representations In Us Middle School Science Textbooks, Victor R. Lee
Adaptations And Continuities In The Use And Design Of Visual Representations In Us Middle School Science Textbooks, Victor R. Lee
Instructional Technology and Learning Sciences Faculty Publications
Visual representations are ubiquitous in modern‐day science textbooks and have in recent years become an object of criticism and scrutiny. This article examines the extent to which changes in representations in textbooks published in the USA over the past six decades have invited those critiques. Drawing from a correlational analysis of a corpus of 34 US middle school physical science textbooks, continuities are established with respect to the purposes that most textbook images serve and the numbers of schematic representations that are used. Changes are observed in the overall total number of representations in textbooks and in the proportion of …

Wyeth V. Levine: What Does It Mean And Where Do Pharmaceutical Companies Go From Here, Clay Landa
Richmond Public Interest Law Review
In the recent landmark decision in Wyeth v. Levine, the Supreme Court put drug manufacturers on notice that they can and should be liable for state tort claims for the harm their products cause regardless of Federal Drug Administration ("FDA") approval of the drug's use and warning labels. Part II of this paper analyzes the history and background of federal preemption to give context to the current environment after Wyeth. Part III analyzes the Supreme Court's decision in Wyeth, holding that the FDCA and corresponding regulations do not preempt state tort claims. Finally, Part IV discusses and analyzes what drug …
