Hiv Prevention Through Sport: The Case Of The Mathare Youth Sport Association In Kenya., Wim Delva, Kristien Michielsen, Bert Meulders, Sandy Groeninck, Edwin Wasonga, Pauline Ajwang, Marleen Temmerman, Bart Vanreusel Jan 2010

Hiv Prevention Through Sport: The Case Of The Mathare Youth Sport Association In Kenya., Wim Delva, Kristien Michielsen, Bert Meulders, Sandy Groeninck, Edwin Wasonga, Pauline Ajwang, Marleen Temmerman, Bart Vanreusel

Obstetrics and Gynaecology, East Africa

Sport has become a popular tool for HIV prevention, based on claims that it can foster life skills that are necessary to translate knowledge, attitudes and behavioural intentions into actual behaviour. Empirical evidence of the effectiveness of sport-based HIV prevention programmes is, however, sorely lacking. We therefore conducted a cross-sectional survey assessing sexual behaviour and the determinants thereof among 454 youth of the Mathare Youth Sport Association (MYSA) in Kenya and a control group of 318 non-MYSA members. Multiple (ordinal) logistic regression models were applied to measure the association between MYSA membership and attitudes, subjective norms and self-efficacy related to …

Obstetrics and Gynaecology, East Africa

Background: Human papillomavirus (HPV) and HIV are each responsible for a considerable burden of disease. Interactions between these infections pose substantial public health challenges, especially where HIV prevalence is high and HPV vaccine coverage low.

Methods: Between July 2005 and January 2006, a cross-sectional community-based survey in Mombasa, Kenya, enrolled female sex workers using snowball sampling. After interview and a gynaecological examination, blood and cervical cytology samples were taken. Quantitative real-time PCR detected HPV types and viral load measures. Prevalence of high-risk HPV was compared between HIV-infected and -uninfected women, and in women with abnormal cervical cytology, measured using conventional …

Our Personal Core Identity: A Wesleyan Perspective, Jim Boetcher Jan 2010

Our Personal Core Identity: A Wesleyan Perspective, Jim Boetcher

The Asbury Journal

Humans have many relational identities that vary with changes in relationships such as being a mother or a daughter, but one's core identity remains independent of these social roles. This paper explores human personal core identity theologically by drawing on Methodism as it existed under the leadership of John Wesley, and scientifically by using three cutting edge scientific research projects: The Human Family Tree and The Human Genome Project present empirical evidence that all humans are genetically related and only one race exists - the human race. Discovering Ardi: Changing Our Understanding of Human Origins shows that humans did not …

Comparative Study Of Factor Xa Fluorogenic Substrates And Their Influence On The Quantification Of Lmwhs, Vanessa Castro-Lopez, Leanne F. Harris, James S. O'Donnell, Anthony J. Killard Jan 2010

Comparative Study Of Factor Xa Fluorogenic Substrates And Their Influence On The Quantification Of Lmwhs, Vanessa Castro-Lopez, Leanne F. Harris, James S. O'Donnell, Anthony J. Killard

Articles

Low molecular weight heparins (LMWHs) are recognised as the preferred anticoagulants in the prevention and treatment of venous thromboembolism. Anti-Factor Xa (anti-FXa) levels are used to monitor the anticoagulant effect of LMWHs and such assays are routinely employed in hospital diagnostic laboratories. In this study, a fluorogenic anti-FXa assay was developed using a commercially available fluorogenic substrate with an attached 6-amino-1- naphthalene-sulfonamide (ANSN) fluorophore and was used for the determination of two LMWHs, enoxaparin and tinzaparin and the heparinoid, danaparoid. The assay was based on the complexation of heparinised plasma with 100 nM exogenous FXa and 25 μM of the …

Effect Of Ultrasonic Processing On Food Enzymes Of Industrial Importance, Paula Bourke, Brijesh Tiwari, Colm O Donnell, Patrick J. Cullen Jan 2010

Effect Of Ultrasonic Processing On Food Enzymes Of Industrial Importance, Paula Bourke, Brijesh Tiwari, Colm O Donnell, Patrick J. Cullen

Articles

In the last decade power ultrasound has emerged as an alternative processing option to conventional thermal approaches for pasteurisation and sterilisation of food products. While sonication alone is not adequate for inactivation of various spoilage and harmful enzymes present in food, ultrasound in combination with mild heat treatment and/or pressure has shown potential for both enzyme and pathogen inactivation. Numerous studies have investigated ultrasound for inactivating enzymes such as pectinmethylesterase, polyphenoloxidases and peroxidases responsible for deterioration of fruit & vegetable juice and various enzymes pertinent to milk quality. The efficacy of ultrasound for the inactivation of enzymes in food is …

Environmental Correlates Of Abundances Of Mosquito Species And Stages In Discarded Vehicle Tires, Donald A. Yee, Jamie M. Kneitel, Steven A. Juliano Jan 2010

Environmental Correlates Of Abundances Of Mosquito Species And Stages In Discarded Vehicle Tires, Donald A. Yee, Jamie M. Kneitel, Steven A. Juliano

Faculty Publications – Biological Sciences

Discarded vehicle tires are a common habitat for container mosquito larvae, although the environmental factors that may control their presence or abundance within a tire are largely unknown. We sample discarded vehicle tires in six sites located within four counties of central Illinois during the spring and summer of 2006 to determine associations between a suite of environmental factors and community composition of container mosquitoes. Our goal was to find patterns of association between environmental factors and abundances of early and late instars. We hypothesized that environmental factors correlated with early instars would be indicative of oviposition cues, whereas environmental …

The Antioxidant Properties Of Whey Permeate Treated Fresh-Cut Tomatoes, Lubna Ahmed, Ana Belen Martin-Diana, Daniel Rico, Catherine Barry-Ryan Jan 2010

The Antioxidant Properties Of Whey Permeate Treated Fresh-Cut Tomatoes, Lubna Ahmed, Ana Belen Martin-Diana, Daniel Rico, Catherine Barry-Ryan

Articles

The aim of this research was to analyse the effects of three types of cheese whey permeate treatment on the antioxidant properties of fresh-cut tomatoes. Tomatoes were treated with whey permeate concentrate (PC), delactosed permeate (DP) and delactosed concentrate (DC), stored at 4 C for 10 days and compared to samples treated with the industry standard, chlorine (120 ppm). Samples treated with DP retained significantly higher antioxidant activity (FRAP) and total phenols (TP), when compared with those treated with PC and DC. DP showed significantly higher results than chlorine for DPPH, FRAP and TP. In DPPH assay, all whey permeate-treated …

Development Of A Fluorescent Anti-Factor Xa Assay To Monitor Unfractionated And Low Molecular Weight Heparins, Leanne Harris, Vanessa Castro-Lopez, Nissrin Hammadi, James S. O'Donnell, Tony Killard Jan 2010

Development Of A Fluorescent Anti-Factor Xa Assay To Monitor Unfractionated And Low Molecular Weight Heparins, Leanne Harris, Vanessa Castro-Lopez, Nissrin Hammadi, James S. O'Donnell, Tony Killard

Articles

Fluorogenic assays have many potential advantages over traditional clot-based and chromogenic assays such as the absence of interference from a range of factor deficiencies as well as offering the possibility of assays in platelet rich plasma or whole blood. A fluorogenic anti-factor Xa (anti-FXa) assay has been developed for the determination of heparin-like anticoagulants including unfractionated heparin (UFH), low-molecular weight heparins (LMWHs), namely enoxaparin and tinzaparin, and the synthetic heparinoid danaparoid, in commercial human pooled plasma. The assay was based on the complexation of heparin-spiked plasmas with exogenous FXa at a concentration of 4 nM in the presence of 0.9 …

Serine- And Arginine-Rich Proteins 55 And 75 (Srp55 And Srp75) Induce Production Of Hiv-1 Vpr Mrna By Inhibiting The 5′-Splice Site Of Exon 3, Anna Tranell, Eva Maria Fenyö, Stefan Schwartz Jan 2010

Serine- And Arginine-Rich Proteins 55 And 75 (Srp55 And Srp75) Induce Production Of Hiv-1 Vpr Mrna By Inhibiting The 5′-Splice Site Of Exon 3, Anna Tranell, Eva Maria Fenyö, Stefan Schwartz

Articles

HIV-1 non-coding exon 3 can either be spliced to exons 4, 4a, 4b, 4c, and 5 to generate tat, rev, and nef mRNAs or remain unspliced to produce the 13a7 vpr mRNA. Here we show that serine- and arginine-rich proteins 55 and 75 (SRp55 and SRp75) inhibit splicing from the 5′-splice site of exon 3 thereby causing an accumulation of the partially unspliced 13a7 vpr mRNA. In contrast, serine- and arginine-rich protein 40 (SRp40) induces splicing from exon 3 to exon 4, thereby promoting the production of the 1347 tat mRNA. We demonstrate that SRp55 stimulates vpr mRNA production by …

Measuring Paralytic Shellfish Toxins In Mussels From New Hampshire Coastal Waters Using Zwitterionic Hydrophilic Liquid Chromatography/Electrospray Mass Spectrometry, Lee Lee Chung Jan 2010

Measuring Paralytic Shellfish Toxins In Mussels From New Hampshire Coastal Waters Using Zwitterionic Hydrophilic Liquid Chromatography/Electrospray Mass Spectrometry, Lee Lee Chung

Master's Theses and Capstones

A liquid chromatography/mass spectrometry method (LC/MS) has been adapted from the literature to provide a rapid, direct and highly sensitive routine assays for several Paralytic Shellfish Poisoning (PSP) toxins, with detection limits in the ppb range for STX and its analog neosaxitoxin (NEO) and decarbamoyl saxitoxin (dcSTX). A high throughput sample clean-up aided in reducing the effects of the matrix. Method validation and stability studies have been performed to show that reliable results are produced by this LC/MS method. The LC/MS method was found to supplement the mouse bioassay with the ability to determine the levels and specific types of …

Bio-Inspired Log-Polar Based Color Image Pattern Analysis In Multiple Frequency Channels, Xiaolu Li Jan 2010

Bio-Inspired Log-Polar Based Color Image Pattern Analysis In Multiple Frequency Channels, Xiaolu Li

Master's Theses and Capstones

The main topic addressed in this thesis is to implement color image pattern recognition based on the lateral inhibition subtraction phenomenon combined with a complex log-polar mapping in multiple spatial frequency channels. It is shown that the individual red, green and blue channels have different recognition performances when put in the context of former work done by Dragan Vidacic. It is observed that the green channel performs better than the other two channels, with the blue channel having the poorest performance. Following the application of a contrast stretching function the object recognition performance is improved in all channels. Multiple spatial …

Using Pentaploids As Tools For Studying Genomic Composition And Allele Transmission Patterns In Octoploid Fragaria, Elizabeth Poulsen Jan 2010

Using Pentaploids As Tools For Studying Genomic Composition And Allele Transmission Patterns In Octoploid Fragaria, Elizabeth Poulsen

Master's Theses and Capstones

A unique pentaploid population of Fragaria (strawberry) was developed to gain insight into octoploid genome composition and allele transmission patterns. This population was produced by crossing representatives of two divergent subspecies of octoploid F. virginiana and then by crossing an octoploid hybrid plant with diploid F. vesca. To enable examination of allele transmission patterns, the intergenic region of the gRGA1-Subtilase gene pair locus was amplified, and PCR products were cloned, sequenced, and compared to define the allele composition of the hybrid octoploid. The sequencing data revealed three distinct major haplotypes and additional subtypes. The pentaploids were genotyped utilizing the FEL-CAPS …

Impacts Of Suburbanization On Food Web Stoichiometry Of Detritus-Based Streams, Nathaniel Burr Morse Jan 2010

Impacts Of Suburbanization On Food Web Stoichiometry Of Detritus-Based Streams, Nathaniel Burr Morse

Master's Theses and Capstones

Higher non-point source nutrient inputs are one of many impacts associated with the "urban stream syndrome". Research on how non-point source pollution affects the stoichiometry of urban stream food webs has received little attention, however. This study quantified food web stoichiometry in nine headwater, detritus-based streams draining forested or suburban watersheds in northeastern, coastal Massachusetts.

While this study suggests that suburbanization can affect in-stream nutrient recycling by consumers, research that quantifies changes to biomass of different in-stream compartments is needed to calculate the extent of such impacts on suburban stream ecosystems.

Planning For Alzheimer's Disease With Mental Health Advance Directives, Lisa Ellen Brodoff Jan 2010

Planning For Alzheimer's Disease With Mental Health Advance Directives, Lisa Ellen Brodoff

Faculty Articles

Mental Health Advance Directives (MHAD) have long been used for life planning in the context of debilitating mental conditions such as dementia and schizophrenia. As early detection and diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease has become increasingly more possible, Professor Brodoff argues in this Article that MHADs can be an extremely effective tool for planning for a future with Alzheimer's disease. Professor Brodoff suggests that all attorneys who assist clients with estate planning create a MHAD, particularly those clients who have been diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease and those with the disease in their families. The MHAD is designed to aid caregivers and …

Patients' Perspectives On Eating Disorder Treatment: A Resource For Practitioners, Danielle L. Davis Jan 2010

Patients' Perspectives On Eating Disorder Treatment: A Resource For Practitioners, Danielle L. Davis

Theses and Dissertations

The need for improved treatment for patients with eating disorders is indicated from outcome studies and clinicians' reports. In order to understand the patient's motivation to engage actively in treatment, as well as the factors that contribute to successful outcome, it is important to attend to patients' perspectives on treatment. The author critically reviewed studies on patients' views and 10 key treatment elements were identified: the therapeutic relationship, provision of social support, collaborative treatment, focus on emotions, focus on underlying issues, inclusion of psychoeducation, therapist's knowledge of EDs, behavioral interventions, appropriate use of medication, and therapist's competence in family dynamics. …

Family Experiences With Accessing Information, Social, And Resource Supports As Participants In Services For Their Special Needs Child Over Three Years Of Age, Joannie Busillo-Aguayo

Theses and Dissertations

Families of children with special needs often experience substantial stress and an increased need for informational, social, or resource support throughout their child's growth and development. However, supports for families of children older than three often report a severe shortage of supports and difficulty accessing and utilizing them. Using purposive sampling techniques, this phenomenological and mixed methods study recruited 6 mothers of children over the age of 3 years diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder to participate in a single 2-hour focus group. Qualitative data was collected using open-ended and semi-structured questions to gain a deeper understanding of parent's lived experiences …

Latina University Professors, Insights Into The Journeys Of Those Who Strive To Leadership Within Academia, Sandra Jeannette Vasquez-Guignard

Theses and Dissertations

The statistics on Latinas who hold positions as professors and leaders in higher education are grim. Although there are more Latinas going to college, only 1% of professors in the U.S. are Latina. The purpose of this phenomenological study was to explore the lived experiences of 4 Latina professors to learn about their journeys to secure positions as professors at a major university in Southern California. The researcher desired to gain insight into Latinas who have overcome the odds. The goal was to determine if there were any common themes, experiences, or contributing factors in these women's journeys, as well …

Cultural Diversity In The Expression And Experience Of Positive Well-Being Among Homeless Men Enrolled In A Residential Treatment Facility, Pernilla Anne Nathan Jan 2010

Cultural Diversity In The Expression And Experience Of Positive Well-Being Among Homeless Men Enrolled In A Residential Treatment Facility, Pernilla Anne Nathan

Theses and Dissertations

What is happiness? What creates or leads to the experience of happiness? Questions like these are fundamental in understanding human functioning in terms of strengths, psychological resiliency, positive emotions, and well-being. However, many question whether current definitions of well-being are shaped by Western Euro-centric perspectives of happiness, negating "other" patterns of well-being (Ryff, Keyes, & Hughes, 2003). Well-being has been considered a critical component in understanding optimal functioning (Ryan & Deci, 2001). However, relatively little qualitative research has been conducted examining how well-being is expressed and experienced in the context of life adversity and racial/ethnic minority status. The purpose of …

The Drift: Rethinking The Affective Dynamics Of Adaptation, John Hodgkins Jan 2010

The Drift: Rethinking The Affective Dynamics Of Adaptation, John Hodgkins

Open Access Dissertations

The Drift effects a deeper understanding of the dynamic relationship between literature and cinema by articulating an "affective turn" for adaptation studies, a field whose traditional focus has been the critical castigation of filmic adaptations based on canonical plays or novels. Specifically, this project draws on theorists such as Gilles Deleuze, Brian Massumi, and Marco Abel to re-conceive literary and cinematic texts as spatio-temporal engines generating and disseminating affect, and the adaptive process as a drifting of those intensities from one medium to another. By conceptualizing adaptation in this manner, this study steers clear of the chimerical notion of fidelity …

Using Passive Samplers To Measure The Bioavailability And Transport Of Sedimentary Organic Contaminants, Carey L. Friedman Jan 2010

Using Passive Samplers To Measure The Bioavailability And Transport Of Sedimentary Organic Contaminants, Carey L. Friedman

Open Access Dissertations

Polyethylene (PE) sampler uptake was compared to polychaete uptake to assess bioavailability of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) from resuspended sediments in the laboratory. Disequilibrium-corrected PE were found to take up PCBs in nearly a 1:1 ratio with polychaete lipid (r2 = 0.88), demonstrating that PE samplers are good biomimetic tools in laboratory exposure tests. When dissolved concentrations were calculated based on equilibrium partitioning from both PE and lipid, PE were found to overestimate biota exposure by 3.6 times on average. PE samplers and polychaetes demonstrated that resuspension under varying water column redox conditions does not affect bioavailability of residual PCBs. In …

The Development Of Novel Mr Molecular Imaging Agents Towards The Visualization Of Dat, Gregory R. Naumiec Jan 2010

The Development Of Novel Mr Molecular Imaging Agents Towards The Visualization Of Dat, Gregory R. Naumiec

Open Access Dissertations

The facile and definitive diagnosis of disease is paramount in treating patients effectively. The ability to image the body, and more precisely the ability to image the specific site of the ailment, has become a cornerstone in medicine. Currently, most imaging technologies focus on macroscopic physical, physiological, or metabolic changes rather than identifying specific molecular events that are responsible for disease. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a non-radioactive and high spatial resolution diagnostic technique capable of both anatomical and molecular imaging. Paramagnetic complexes, such as gadolinium, can be used as MRI contrast agents because their unpaired electrons increase the relaxivity …

Free Energy Changes In Water Clusters, Glen L. Holden Jan 2010

Free Energy Changes In Water Clusters, Glen L. Holden

Open Access Dissertations

Free energy changes and other thermodynamic properties have been determined for classical TIP4P water clusters for aggregrate sizes 2 ≤ n ≤ 20 using Monte Carlo methods. The pairwise monomer interactions (PMI) are represented by Lennard-Jones and Coulombic potentials and the free energies, enthalpies and entropies are calculated as a function of temperature and cluster size. Temperature dependent heat capacity curves have provided the diagnostic for the observed phase changes in the processes considered. By examining the fine structure in the free energy changes as a function of cluster size, processes n=7 and n=11 have been found to be particularly …
