The Association Between Parenting Style And Life Satisfaction In Adulthood, Stephanie Caras Jan 2010

The Association Between Parenting Style And Life Satisfaction In Adulthood, Stephanie Caras

Master's Theses and Capstones

This research examined the association between parenting style and life satisfaction in adulthood (N=112). Participants responded to an online survey, called the Parenting Style and Life Satisfaction Survey, which included questions pertaining to parenting style experienced in childhood, parenting style used in adulthood, and levels of life satisfaction. A chi-square test was conducted to determine if there was a relationship between parenting style experienced in childhood and the adult's own parenting style. Analysis of variance tests were conducted to determine how parenting style experienced in childhood was connected to life satisfaction in adulthood and how the adult's parenting style was …

Gender Bias In The Legal Field: Experiences Of Female Attorneys And Law Students, Jessie L. French Jan 2010

Gender Bias In The Legal Field: Experiences Of Female Attorneys And Law Students, Jessie L. French

Master's Theses and Capstones

This study examines the experiences of female attorneys and law students with respect to gender bias. Contemporary evaluations indicate that while women comprise approximately 50% of the job force, they are significantly underrepresented in management positions and continue to be paid less than men; this is especially true in the legal field. Thirty-five in-depth interviews were conducted, 25 with women who had obtained a juris doctorate and 10 with female law students. Women discussed their experiences in the legal field relative to law school, expectations for their careers, media influences, gender discrimination and harassment. Qualitative analysis revealed that pregnancy was …

Water Analysis For Emerging Environmental Contaminants, Xiaoliang Cheng Jan 2010

Water Analysis For Emerging Environmental Contaminants, Xiaoliang Cheng

Masters Theses

"The presence of emerging environmental contaminants in water bodies used either as drinking water or for recreational purpose has received considerable attention in the recent years. The emerging environmental contaminants can be defined as a wide range of chemicals that have been determined in the environment which may present serious health risks for humans. The occurrence of these contaminants indicate that both household and industrial chemicals have been introduced to water resources, a wide variety of chemicals, such as disinfection byproducts, pharmaceutical and personal care products and so on, have been detected at cetiain levels in either water bodies or …

Women In Glaciology, An Historical Perspective, Christina L. Hulbe, Weili Wang, Simon Ommanney Jan 2010

Women In Glaciology, An Historical Perspective, Christina L. Hulbe, Weili Wang, Simon Ommanney

Geology Faculty Publications and Presentations

Women's history in glaciology extends as far back in time as the discipline itself, although their contributions to the scientific discourse have for all of that history been constrained by the sociopolitical contexts of the times. The first Journal of Glaciology paper authored by a woman appeared in 1948, within a year of the founding of the Journal, but it was not until the 1980s that women produced more than a few percent of Journal and Annals of Glaciology papers. Here international perspectives on women's participation in the sciences are presented in order to establish an economic and sociopolitical context …

Water-Mass Transformation In The Shelf Seas, Gualtiero Badin, Richard G. Williams, Jonathan Sharples Jan 2010

Water-Mass Transformation In The Shelf Seas, Gualtiero Badin, Richard G. Williams, Jonathan Sharples

Journal of Marine Research

The rate at which water masses are transformed from one density class to another is assessed in the shelf seas using the Walin (1982) framework. For a tidal-mixing front, the transformation is estimated using air-sea density fluxes and the diapycnal mixing diagnosed from a series of one-dimensional mixed layer models running across the shelf. These transformation rates diagnosed from the air-sea fluxes and diapycnal mixing agree with volume changes diagnosed directly from the model. The transformation from air-sea fluxes reaches a maximum amplitude typically twice that provided by diffusive mixing. This framework is extended to estimate the rate at which …

Depth-Integrated Steric Height As A Tool For Detecting Non-Sverdrup Behavior In The Global Ocean, J. Stuart Godfrey, Jeff R. Dunn Jan 2010

Depth-Integrated Steric Height As A Tool For Detecting Non-Sverdrup Behavior In The Global Ocean, J. Stuart Godfrey, Jeff R. Dunn

Journal of Marine Research

Godfrey's (1989) (referred to below as G89) calculation of the global field of annual mean Depth-Integrated Steric Height, or Sverdrup et al.'s (1942) "Transport Function," (Q) is revisited, using newer products for wind stresses, temperature and salinity. Observed Q and its wind-estimated equivalent QW are compared more extensively along eastern oceanic boundaries than in G89. Q and QW are also compared along the inner edge of the Pacific western boundary, at locations where G89 theory suggests that such a comparison is possible. A similar comparison along the western Atlantic improves after a 16 Sv correction …

The Effect Of Iron- And Light-Limitation On Phytoplankton Communities Of Deep Chlorophyll Maxima Of The Western Pacific Ocean, Zackary I. Johnson, Ragini Shyam, Anna E. Ritchie, Cecile Mioni, Veronica P. Lance, James W. Murray, Erik R. Zinser Jan 2010

The Effect Of Iron- And Light-Limitation On Phytoplankton Communities Of Deep Chlorophyll Maxima Of The Western Pacific Ocean, Zackary I. Johnson, Ragini Shyam, Anna E. Ritchie, Cecile Mioni, Veronica P. Lance, James W. Murray, Erik R. Zinser

Journal of Marine Research

The deep chlorophyll maximum (DCM) is a widespread feature in most stratified, oligotrophic waters. In addition to their well-established importance for many surface phytoplankton communities, more recent evidence suggests that iron, light or co-limitation may also be important drivers for some DCM communities. To test this hypothesis, we describe the results from six grow-out experiments, four from the Equatorial Pacific Ocean (between 150°E and 140°W), one in Western Pacific Warm Pool (9°S, 170°E) and one in the middle of the Tasman Sea (36°S). Photosynthetic efficiency (Fv/Fm) and biomass response, including Chl a and phytoplankton community structure (pennate diatoms, photosynthetic eukaryotes, …

Moored Observations Of Bottom-Intensified Motions In The Deep Canada Basin, Arctic Ocean, M.-L. Timmermans, L. Rainville, L. Thomas, A. Proshutinsky Jan 2010

Moored Observations Of Bottom-Intensified Motions In The Deep Canada Basin, Arctic Ocean, M.-L. Timmermans, L. Rainville, L. Thomas, A. Proshutinsky

Journal of Marine Research

In the deep Canada Basin, below the sill depth (about 2400 m) of the Alpha-Mendeleyev Ridge, potential temperature and salinity first increase with depth, then remain uniform from about 2600 m to the bottom (approximately 3500 m). Year-long moored measurements of temperature, salinity and pressure in these deep and homogeneous bottom waters reveal significant vertical excursions with periods of about 50 days. The observed isopycnal displacements have amplitudes up to 100 m at the top boundary of the bottom layer; moored profiler measurements in the intermediate water column indicate that the amplitudes of these vertical displacements decay toward the surface …

Sea Ice Melt And Meteoric Water Distributions In Nares Strait, Baffin Bay, And The Canadian Arctic Archipelago, Matthew B. Alkire, Kelly K. Falkner, Timothy Boyd, Robie W. Macdonald Jan 2010

Sea Ice Melt And Meteoric Water Distributions In Nares Strait, Baffin Bay, And The Canadian Arctic Archipelago, Matthew B. Alkire, Kelly K. Falkner, Timothy Boyd, Robie W. Macdonald

Journal of Marine Research

Sea ice melt (SIM), meteoric water (river runoff net precipitation), and Pacific seawater contributions to the upper waters of the Canadian Arctic Archipelago (CAA), Nares Strait, and Baffin Bay during late summer 1997 and 2003 are estimated from salinity, δ18O, and nutrient data. Salinity-δ18O relationships within the study area suggest that the CAA inherits a net sea-ice formation (brine) signal from the Arctic Ocean. Inherited brine complicates the estimation of local contributions from sea ice melt and glacial runoff, especially where a significant component of the surface water derives from Arctic outflow. Our data are characterized …

Investigation Of The Physicochemical Features And Mixing Of East/Japan Sea Intermediate Water: An Isopycnic Analysis Approach, Il-Nam Kim, Dong-Ha Min, Dae Hyun Kim, Tongsup Lee

Journal of Marine Research

We present spatial distributions of the mixing ratio and properties of the East/Japan Sea Intermediate Water (ESIW) at its core density layer (σθ = 27.2–27.3) based on high-quality hydrographic data observed in the East/Japan Sea (EJS) during summer 1999. ESIW is defined as a source water type showing minimum salinity and maximum dissolved oxygen concentration. ESIW plays an important role in supplying dissolved oxygen and transporting anthropogenic carbon into the intermediate/deep layers in EJS. Studying the ESIW formation and distribution processes may provide insights on EJS's shallow- to mid-depth thermohaline circulation and recent ocean changes. Here, we combine the …

Scientific Understandings Of Postpartum Illness: Improving Health Law And Policy?, Stacey A. Tovino Jan 2010

Scientific Understandings Of Postpartum Illness: Improving Health Law And Policy?, Stacey A. Tovino

Scholarly Works

In its broadest sense, the Article examines the relationship between science and the law in the context of postpartum illness. From classical antiquity to the present day, physicians and scientists have investigated the causes, correlates, and consequences of the depressions and psychoses that develop in some women following their transition to motherhood. The scientific investigation of postpartum illness has been characterized by an open-ended search for knowledge with the recgonition that scientific findings published one day are subject to revision the next. Legislators and judges also have sought to understand postpartum illness as necessary to make laws that affect and …

In Search Of The Reasonable Woman: Anti-Discrimination Rhetoric In The United States, Francis J. Mootz Iii Jan 2010

In Search Of The Reasonable Woman: Anti-Discrimination Rhetoric In The United States, Francis J. Mootz Iii

Scholarly Works

This article emerged from my participation in a Symposium addressing global perspectives on the topic, "Anti-Discrimination Discourse and Practices," sponsored by The Jean Monnet Chair of European Law at Cagliari University, Sardinia. The article examines the rhetorical development of the "reasonable woman" standard of hostile work environment sexual harassment under Title VII. I argue that the rhetorical framing of the standard has unnecessarily limited its impact, perhaps to the point of undermining its potential to radically revise our understanding of gender discrimination. I suggest how the rhetorical power of the standard might be recovered.

Ricci V. Destefano: A Masculinities Theory Analysis, Ann C. Mcginley Jan 2010

Ricci V. Destefano: A Masculinities Theory Analysis, Ann C. Mcginley

Scholarly Works

This Article applies masculinity theory to explore the aspects Ricci v. Destefano and its political reverberations. Empirical evidence showed that virtually all written tests have a disparate impact on minorities, that a neighboring city had reached less discriminatory results using a different weighting system, and that other fire departments used assessment centers to judge firefighters' qualifications for promotions. While the black male and all female firefighters were made invisible by the case and the testimony, the fact that Ricci's and Vargas' testimony lionized a particularly traditional form of heterosexual masculinity was also invisible. While the command presence required of a …

Small Intestine Submucosa For Repair Of Injured Rabbit Cornea: A Pilot Study, Mark Nicholas Perenich Jan 2010

Small Intestine Submucosa For Repair Of Injured Rabbit Cornea: A Pilot Study, Mark Nicholas Perenich

PCOM Biomedical Studies Student Scholarship

Corneal injuries blind approximately 15 million people worldwide annually. Current methods of treatment have several disadvantages with respect to cost and availability. This study evaluated a small intestine submucosa (SIS) xenograft treatment for a severe corneal injury. SIS could be a favorable alternative to the current treatment methods, because it is inexpensive to produce and abundant where pigs are consumed. A severe ocular injury was created in the right eye of 5 rabbits by n-heptanol and mechanical debridement of the cornea and limbus. The cornea was then evaluated with fluorescence stain and a SIS xenograft was used for treatment. Clinical …

Equal Standing With States: Tribal Sovereignty And Standing After Massachusetts V. Epa, Joseph Mead, Nicholas Fromherz Jan 2010

Equal Standing With States: Tribal Sovereignty And Standing After Massachusetts V. Epa, Joseph Mead, Nicholas Fromherz

All Maxine Goodman Levin School of Urban Affairs Publications

In Massachusetts v. EPA, 549 U.S. 497 (2007), the Supreme Court held that Massachusetts was entitled to "special solicitude" in the standing analysis because it was sovereign. As a result, Massachusetts passed the standing threshold in a global warming case where an ordinary litigant may have been stymied. The Supreme Court’s analysis raises an interesting question: Are Indian tribes—which have been considered sovereign entities since before the founding, and which hold lands facing heavy environmental pressure—entitled to "special solicitude" as well? We think they should be.

To make this argument, we begin by discussing standing basics; dissecting Massachusetts v. …

Multifactorial Analysis Of Variables Influencing The Fracture Strength Of Repair Joints For Provisional Restorative Materials Using The Statistically Based Taguchi Method, Chun-Jen Cheng, Chun-Li Lin, Yu-Fu Shan Jan 2010

Multifactorial Analysis Of Variables Influencing The Fracture Strength Of Repair Joints For Provisional Restorative Materials Using The Statistically Based Taguchi Method, Chun-Jen Cheng, Chun-Li Lin, Yu-Fu Shan

Journal of Dental Sciences

Background/purpose In this study, we investigated the relative contributions of design factors to the fracture strength of provisional materials after repair. Materials and methods The Taguchi method was used to investigate the optimal design with respect to four different design factors: subject material, repair material, repair design, and connector thickness. Each factor was assigned three levels. Using the Taguchi L9 orthogonal array, nine rectangular bar-shaped experimental specimens with different parameter combinations were fabricated ( n = 5) and tested with a three-point bending test. The fracture load (in newtons) of each specimen group was recorded. The Taguchi method was employed …

Habitat Use, Movements And Spring Migration Chronology And Corridors Of Female Gadwalls That Winter Along The Louisiana Gulf Coast, Jacob M. Gray

LSU Master's Theses

The Louisiana Gulf Coast is an important wintering area for North American gadwall (Anas strepera). Conservation of winter habitat is a top priority of the Gulf Coast Joint Venture. Quantitative estimates of habitat use by wintering gadwall would help improve energetic demand models and subsequent estimates of habitat requirements. I used satellite telemetry (PTTs) to estimate winter habitat and refuge uses, spring migration chronology and corridors, as well as inter- and intra-regional winter movements of females. I used a split-plot MANOVA to evaluate the effects of individual females, female age, winter, hunt periods within winter, time of day, and all …
