Dynamic Path Bifurcation For The Beckmann Reaction: Observation And Implication, H. Yamataka, M. Sato, H. Hasegawa, Salai Cheettu Ammal

Faculty Publications

The reaction of oximes to amides, known as the Beckmann rearrangement, may undergo fragmentation to form carbocations + nitriles instead of amides when the cations have reasonable stability. The reactions of oxime derivatives of 1-substituted-phenyl-2-propanones and 3-substituted-phenyl-2-butanones in aqueous solvents gave both rearrangement and fragmentation products, the ratio of which was dependent on substituents. Transition state (TS) optimizations and intrinsic reaction coordinate (IRC) calculations for the reaction of 1-phenyl-2-propanone oximes showed that there is a single TS for each substituted compound. The IRC path from the TS either led to a rearrangement product or a fragmentation product depending on the …

Design, Fabrication, And Evaluation Of An All-Grain Brewing System, Alex Jensen Jan 2010

Design, Fabrication, And Evaluation Of An All-Grain Brewing System, Alex Jensen

BioResource and Agricultural Engineering

A propane burner system was design for to use with an existing all grain brewing system. The use of a pump was used to create a recalculating mash system. The evaluation of the entire system included determining the amount of potential sugars which could be extracted from the malted grains and comparing them to the actual amount of sugar extracted prior to fermentation. An expected value was achieved. Another analysis looks at how efficient the system was at turning the total water used into a drinkable final product.

Paleogeographic, Paleoceanographic, And Tectonic Controls On Early Late Ordovician Graptolite Diversity Patterns, Daniel Goldman, Shuang-Ye Wu

Department of Earth, Environment and Sustainability Faculty Publications

The Katian Age (early Late Ordovician) was a time of significant decline in marine biodiversity, but whether this decline was a real phenomenon or an artifact of the relatively few studies devoted to this interval requires further research. We examined the pattern of graptolite faunal changes across the boundary between the Climacograptus bicornis and Diplacanthograptus caudatus graptolite zones in North America and on several other continents.

A sharp decline in species diversity occurs in the Appalachian Basin. Scores for normalized diversity dropped from 20 in the C. bicornis Zone to 7 in the D. caudatus Zone. Only 11% of the …

Distance Functions And Attribute Weighting In A K-Nearest Neighbors Classifier, Alyssa C. Frazee, Matthew A. Hathcock, Samantha C. Bates Prins Jan 2010

Distance Functions And Attribute Weighting In A K-Nearest Neighbors Classifier, Alyssa C. Frazee, Matthew A. Hathcock, Samantha C. Bates Prins

Undergraduate Mathematics Day: Past Content

To assess environmental health of a stream, field, or other ecological object, characteristics of that object should be compared to a set of reference objects known to be healthy. Using streams as objects, we propose a k-nearest neighbors algorithm (Bates Prins and Smith, 2006) to find the appropriate set of reference streams to use as a comparison set for any given test stream. Previously, investigations of the k-nearest neighbors algorithm have utilized a variety of distance functions, the best of which has been the Interpolated Value Difference Metric (IVDM), proposed by Wilson and Martinez (1997). We propose two alternatives to …

Gender, Human Security And The United Nations: Security Language As A Political Framework For Women, Natalie Florea Hudson Jan 2010

Gender, Human Security And The United Nations: Security Language As A Political Framework For Women, Natalie Florea Hudson

Political Science Faculty Publications

This book examines the relationship between women, gender and the international security agenda, exploring the meaning of security in terms of discourse and practice, as well as the larger goals and strategies of the global women's movement.

Today, many complex global problems are being located within the security logic. From the environment to HIV/AIDS, state and non-state actors have made a practice out of securitizing issues that are not conventionally seen as such. As most prominently demonstrated by the UN Security Council Resolution 1325 (2001), activists for women's rights have increasingly framed women's rights and gender inequality as security issues …

Feminism, Cultural Violence Of, Danielle Poe Jan 2010

Feminism, Cultural Violence Of, Danielle Poe

Philosophy Faculty Publications

For most, if not all, self-defined feminists, feminism means support for equality between women and men. The difficulty with this definition, though, is determining what one means by "equality," by "women and men," and by "sex" and "gender." For some feminists, equality requires that differences between women and men be acknowledged and valued. For other feminists, equality means that the category "human" encompasses women and men and that the differences within a sex are greater than differences between the sexes.

Feminists also differ on what they mean by "women" and "men"; these terms can be defined biologically, genetically, culturally, religiously, …

Competent Public Speaking: Assessing Skill Development In The Basic Course, Judy C. Pearson, Jeffrey T. Child, Liliana L. Herakova, Julie L. Semlak, Jessica Angelos

Basic Communication Course Annual

Effective public speaking skills are essential for a successful life. The authors provide an overall assessment of the basic public speaking course by examining fifteen student attributes divided into three categories (course engagement characteristics, dispositions, and demographics) hypothesized to affect learning and public speaking skill development in the basic course. A four-step hierarchical multiple regression tested two research questions (N = 709). Course engagement characteristics improved students’ public-speaking grade averages, but dispositions did not. The effects of demographic characteristics, particularly biological sex, were not eliminated after controlling for course engagement and dispositional factors (twelve variables). Implications and limitations of the …

A Study Of Factors Contributing To Self-Reported Anomalies In Civil Aviation, Chris Andrzejczak

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

A study investigating what factors are present leading to pilots submitting voluntary anomaly reports regarding their flight performance was conducted. The study employed statistical methods, text mining, clustering, and dimensional reduction techniques in an effort to determine relationships between factors and anomalies. A review of the literature was conducted to determine what factors are contributing to these anomalous incidents, as well as what research exists on human error, its causes, and its management. Data from the NASA Aviation Safety Reporting System (ASRS) was analyzed using traditional statistical methods such as frequencies and multinomial logistic regression. Recently formalized approaches in text …

Branched And Spiral Organic Nanotubes Based On The Self-Assembly Of Bile Acids, Xuejun Zhang Jan 2010

Branched And Spiral Organic Nanotubes Based On The Self-Assembly Of Bile Acids, Xuejun Zhang

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The self-assembly of chiral amphiphilic molecules in aqueous solutions is of particular interest because the chirality of individual molecules is often expressed in their supermolecular structures. Self-assembled tubes made of chiral amphiphilic molecules represent useful supramolecular architectures which hold promise as controlled release vehicles for drug delivery, encapsulates for functional molecules, and nanoreactors for chemical reactions. Lithocholic acid (LCA) is a secondary bile acid with the concentration being identical to that of cholesterol in the hepatic bile and gallbladder. It has a rigid, nearly planar hydrophobic steroid nucleus, with four hydrogen atoms and one hydroxyl group directed toward the concave …

Tuning The Properties Of Nanomaterials As Function Of Surface And Environment, Ajay Karakoti Jan 2010

Tuning The Properties Of Nanomaterials As Function Of Surface And Environment, Ajay Karakoti

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Nanotechnology has shaped the research and development in various disciplines of science and technology by redefining the interdisciplinary research. It has put the materials science at the forefront of technology by allowing the researchers to engineer materials with properties ranging from electronics to biomedical by using materials as diverse as ceramics to just plain carbon. These exceptional properties are achieved by minimizing the dimension of particles in such smaller domains that the boundary between the individual atoms, ions or cluster of particles is very small. This results in a change in conventional properties of particles from continuum physics to quantum …

Bioengineering is the application of engineering principles to address challenges in the fields of biology and medicine. Biomaterials play a major role in bioengineering. This work employs a three level approach to study the various interactions of biomaterials with proteins, cells and tissue in vitro. In the first study, we qualitatively and quantitatively analyzed the process of protein adsorption of two enzymes to two different surface chemistries, which are commonly used in the field. In the second study, we attempted to engineer a tissue construct to build a biocompatible interface between a titanium substrate and human skin. In the third …

Mechanical Properties Of Carbon Nanotube/Metal Composites, Ying Sun Jan 2010

Mechanical Properties Of Carbon Nanotube/Metal Composites, Ying Sun

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have captured a great deal of attention worldwide since their discovery in 1991. CNTs are considered to be the stiffest and strongest material due to their perfect atomic arrangement and intrinsic strong in-plane sp 2—sp 2 covalent bonds between carbon atoms. In addition to mechanical properties, CNTs have also shown exceptional chemical, electrical and thermal properties. All these aspects make CNTs promising candidates in the development of novel multi-functional nanocomposites. Utilizing CNTs as fillers to develop advanced nanocomposites still remains a challenge, due to the lack of fundamental understanding of both material processing at the nanometer scale …

Mitigating Misbehavior In Wireless Networks: A Game Theoretic Approach, Wenjing Wang Jan 2010

Mitigating Misbehavior In Wireless Networks: A Game Theoretic Approach, Wenjing Wang

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In a distributed wireless system, multiple network nodes behave cooperatively towards a common goal. Though such assumptions on cooperation are desirable (e.g., controlling the transmit power level, reducing interference for each other, revealing private information, adhering to network policies) for analyzing and modeling, certain nodes belonging to a real-world system have often shown to deviate. These nodes, known as misbehaving nodes, bring more challenges to the design of the wireless network because the unreliable channel makes the actions of the nodes hidden from each other. In this dissertation, we analyze two types of misbehavior, namely, selfish noncooperation and malicious attacking. …

Comparison Of Traditional Standard Drainfield With Innovative B&G Treatment Bed For Nutrient Removal From Septic Tank Wastewater, Fahim Hossain Jan 2010

Comparison Of Traditional Standard Drainfield With Innovative B&G Treatment Bed For Nutrient Removal From Septic Tank Wastewater, Fahim Hossain

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Nowadays people are more alert about conservation of water and water scarcity. The amount of usable water is decreasing due to unavailability of pure water for day to day use. Both surface and groundwater is contaminated by untreated wastewater discharged from improper onsite wastewater treatment system, nutrient laden agricultural runoff and increasing use of fertilizer in fields. This elevated nutrient level is increasing the maintenance and operation cost of water treatment plant. So it is an important task to remove those nutrients from wastewater and other water bodies by applying environmental friendly process. In the USA, about 25% homes are …

Control Of Hydrogen Sulfide Emissionsusing Autotrophic Denitrificationlandfill Biocovers, Daoroong Sungthong Jan 2010

Control Of Hydrogen Sulfide Emissionsusing Autotrophic Denitrificationlandfill Biocovers, Daoroong Sungthong

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Hydrogen sulfide (H2S), a major odorous component emitted from construction and demolition debris landfills, has received increasing attention. Besides its unpleasant odor, long-term exposure to a very low concentration of H2S can cause a public health issue. Although cover materials such as soil and compost are recommended to be used routinely to control an odor problem from the landfills, the problem still remains. Autotrophic denitrification may have environmental applications including treatment of water, groundwater, wastewater or gaseous streams contaminated with sulfur and/or nitrogen compounds. However, there have been no studies reported in the literature on H2S removal using autotrophic denitrification …

Assessment Of Aquifer Storage And Recovery Impact On Phosphorus Stability In Lake Sediment, Sha Liu Jan 2010

Assessment Of Aquifer Storage And Recovery Impact On Phosphorus Stability In Lake Sediment, Sha Liu

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Lake Okeechobee, the second largest natural freshwater lake in the United States, had experienced a historical drought in 2007-2008 and the inflow to Lake Okeechobee has been reduced by 40% of the average daily mean between warm phase and cold phase due to the impact of Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation in the past six decades. To cope with this water resources management problem, the US Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) proposed the largest national implementation plan of aquifer storage and recovery (ASR) project in the Kissimmee River Basin. Routine operation of ASR will deliver recovered water from ASR wells into the …

Evaluation Of Oxidized Media Filtration Processes For The Treatment Of Hydrogen Sulfide In Groundwater, Vito Trupiano

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study evaluated alternative sulfide treatment processes for potable water systems that rely on groundwater supplies. Research for this study was conducted at the Imperial Lakes (IL) and Turner Road (TR) water treatment plants (WTPs) in Polk County, Florida. These WTPs are in the process of refurbishment and expansion, and will require the installation of a new groundwater well. The IL and TR WTPs both rely upon groundwater sources that contain total sulfide at concentrations ranging from 1.4 to 2.6 mg/L. Sulfide is a concern because if left untreated it can impact finished water quality, corrosivity, create undesirable taste and …

Psychosocial And Physical Health Variables As Predictors Of Weight Loss Six Months Post Roux-En-Y Bariatric Surgery, Alexander L. Patterson

Doctor of Psychology (PsyD)

Bariatric surgery is an increasingly popular intervention for obesity, and psychologists have seen a growing role in the evaluation of surgery candidates. Studies of pre-surgery psychosocial and physical health variables that are predictive of post-surgical outcome have been inconclusive. In the present study, pre-operative health status, psychological testing results, and support group attendance were measured to determine their relationship with weight-loss outcome at 6 months post-surgery. The Health Perception scale of the Health Status Questionnaire was a significant predictor of weight loss outcome. This suggests that individuals who endorse more negative perceptions of their physical health are more likely to …
