Turkish Journal of Biology
Anthocyanins are natural pigments widely distributed in nature. Anthocyanin pigment molecules are a subclass of flavonoids. They are responsible for the red, purple, and blue colors observed in many flowers, fruits, and vegetables. Fruits and berries are the main sources of anthocyanins in nature. Anthocyanins are thought to contribute to the nutritive value of fruits and berries due to their antioxidative, anti-carcinogenic, anti-inflammatory, and anti-angiogenic properties. Anthocyanins can also improve the nutritional value of processed foods by preventing the oxidation of lipids and proteins. As such, identification of agents that can affect the stability of anthocyanins and the protective effect …

The Effects Of The Pho85 Signaling Pathway On The Invertase Biosynthesis And Glucose Uptake In Saccharomyces Cerevisiae, Sezai̇ Türkel, Eli̇f Arik
Turkish Journal of Biology
Glucose signaling controls a wide range of metabolic events in the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae. Glucose sensing and signaling processes require a variety of membrane-bound and cytoplasmic sensor proteins. Pho85p is a cyclin-dependent protein kinase that controls different metabolic events upon binding to its cyclin partners in the cytoplasm of yeast cells. In this study, we investigated the roles of Pho85p in the glucose signaling pathways that control invertase biosynthesis and glucose uptake in yeast. The biosynthesis of invertase enzyme from the SUC2 gene is controlled by glucose repression and derepression mechanisms in S. cerevisiae. However, the results of this research …

Relation Of The Wnt/Β-Catenin Signaling Pathway With Gynecological Cancers, Hani̇fe Güler Tanir, Şayeste Demi̇rezen, Mehmet Si̇nan Beksaç
Turkish Journal of Biology
The Wnt signaling pathway is evolutionary conserved and controls many biological processes like cell proliferation and differentiation. It also provides planar polarity, regulation of the cell cycle, and cell adhesion during both the embryonic and adult period. However, it has been widely considered in the literature that some pathological alterations in various biomolecules involved in this pathway, and aberrant activation of signaling have important roles primarily in the genesis of colorectal and cervical cancer and several other serious diseases. The Wnt signaling pathway diversifies into 3 types: Wnt\beta-catenin signaling pathway, planar cell polarity pathway, and Wnt/calcium (Ca^{+2}) pathway. Only the …

The genotoxic and antigenotoxic effects of Aloe vera leaf extract (AV) were investigated using the chromosome aberrations (CAs) test for the bone marrow cells of rats, sister chromatid exchanges (SCEs) and micronucleus (MN) and CAs tests for human lymphocytes, and the Ames Salmonella/microsome test system. In the bone marrow cells of rats, AV extract significantly induced structural and total CAs at all concentrations and in all treatment periods. In human peripheral lymphocytes, AV did not increase the mean SCE; however, it significantly induced the MN frequency and structural CAs. In addition, AV showed a cytotoxic effect by decreasing the replication …

Conventional and GTC, CTC, and AgNO_3 banded karyotypes of brown hares (Lepus europaeus Pallas, 1778) from Turkey are described for the first time. All specimens possessed a diploid number of 2n = 48 chromosomes and a fundamental autosomal number of NFa = 88. The chromosome set consisted of 8 metacentric and submetacentric pairs and 15 subtelocentric and acrocentric pairs decreasing in size from large to small. The X chromosome was a large submetacentric while the Y was a small acrocentric. In contrast with the other specimens, the Kilis specimen possessed a duplication in the long arm of one of the …
