It is controversial whether weight loss reduces resting energy expenditure (REE) to a different magnitude in black and white women. This study was to determine whether changes in REE with weight loss were different between black and white postmenopausal women, and whether changes in body composition (including regional lean and fat mass) were associated with REE changes within each race. Black (n= 26) and white (n= 65) women (age= 58.2±5.4 years, 25< BMI< 40 kg·m−2) completed a 20-week weight loss intervention. Body weight, lean and fat mass (total body, limb and trunk) via dual energy X-ray absorptiometry, and REE via indirect …

Assessing the potential for threatened species to persist and spread within fragmented landscapes requires the identification of core areas that can sustain resident populations and dispersal corridors that can link these core areas with isolated patches of remnant habitat. We developed a set of GIS tools, simulation methods, and network analysis procedures to assess potential landscape connectivity for the Delmarva fox squirrel (DFS; Sciurus niger cinereus), an endangered species inhabiting forested areas on the Delmarva Peninsula, USA. Information on the DFS’s life history and dispersal characteristics, together with data on the composition and configuration of land cover on the peninsula, …

Far-Field Optical Nanoscopy Based On Continuous Wave Laser Stimulated Emission Depletion, C. Kuang, Wei Zhao, Guiren Wang
Faculty Publications
Stimulated emission depletion (STED) microscopy is one of the breakthrough technologies that belong to far-field optical microscopy and can achieve nanoscale spatial resolution. We demonstrate a far-field optical nanoscopy based on continuous wave lasers with different wavelengths, i.e., violet and green lasers for excitation and STED, respectively. Fluorescent dyes Coumarin 102 and Atto 390 are used for validating the depletion efficiency. Fluorescent nanoparticles are selected for characterizing the spatial resolution of the STED system. Linear scanning of the laser beams of the STED system along one line of a microscope slide, which is coated with the nanoparticles, indicates that a …
Metabolic Actions Of Insulin In Men And Women, Faidon Magkos, Xuewen Wang, Bettina Mittendorfer
Metabolic Actions Of Insulin In Men And Women, Faidon Magkos, Xuewen Wang, Bettina Mittendorfer
Faculty Publications
Insulin is an important regulator of glucose, lipid and protein metabolism. It suppresses hepatic glucose and triglyceride production, inhibits adipose tissue lipolysis and whole-body and muscle proteolysis and stimulates glucose uptake in muscle. In this review we discuss what is currently known about the control of substrate metabolism by insulin in men and women. The data available so far indicate that women are more sensitive to insulin with regards to glucose metabolism (both in the liver and in muscle) whereas there are no differences between men and women in insulin action on lipolysis. Potential differences exist in the regulation of …

Mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) markers has been widely used to better resolve the taxonomic identification as well as display the genetic relatedness of different species and closely related fish. The highly cost ornamental fish, Asian arowana (Scleropages formosus) of family Osteoglossidae has different colored strains that are geographically distributed in different regions around Southeast Asia. The taxonomic classification of these different strains still remains unclear and disputable. The partial sequences of the cytochrome b and the DNA barcoding gene, cytochrome C oxidase were analyzed and assessed for molecular identification; to differentiate the colored varieties of this species. The results of this …

Cells Have Rules For Communication
Just like humans have rules about how to communicate within a society, cells also need rules to govern communication.
Protein Arginine Methyltransferases (PRMTs) are enzymes that make modifications to specific proteins in a cell to communicate. Importantly, PRMTs need to distinguish a target protein from a non-target protein.

Truncated Mortalin In Animal Cancer, Katrina K. Olson
Truncated Mortalin In Animal Cancer, Katrina K. Olson
Master's Theses and Capstones
Hematopoetic neoplasia or clam hemocyte cancer (a leukemia-like disease) has been studied in a number of bivalve molluscs for the last 20 years. Recent molecular studies of the hemocytes of the soft shell clam, Mya arenaria, have demonstrated an interaction between p53 and mortalin, the mitochondrial Hsp70. The former protein is intimately involved in the initiation of cell-cycle arrest, apoptosis, DNA repair, and cell differentiation. In cancerous clams, wild-type p53 is sequestered in hemocyte cytoplasm by mortalin and cannot be translocated to the nucleus. This is critical because although p53 is functions properly, it is unable to enter the nucleus …
Landscape Genetics Of The New England Cottontail: Effects Of Habitat Fragmentation On Population Genetic Structure And Dispersal, Lindsey E. Fenderson
Landscape Genetics Of The New England Cottontail: Effects Of Habitat Fragmentation On Population Genetic Structure And Dispersal, Lindsey E. Fenderson
Master's Theses and Capstones
The New England cottontail (Sylvilagus transitionalis) is a species of conservation concern. Population recovery will require knowledge of genetic structure and dispersal patterns. To this end, I used microsatellite loci to assess genetic structure at two spatial scales: across the entire range (broadscale) and within the northernmost population (finescale).
Range-wide, cottontails are separated into five distinct populations. There was little evidence of gene flow among populations and they have experienced extensive genetic drift. Several populations had comparatively reduced genetic diversity.
Intensive fine-scale surveys revealed four genetically differentiated populations. Interstate-95 is a dispersal barrier, though other major roads did not impact …
Aerosol Extinction Measurements With A New Multipass Aerosol Differential Optical Absorption Spectrometer (A-Doas): Laboratory Validation And Initial Ambient Measurements, Ryan T. Chartier
Master's Theses and Capstones
Atmospheric aerosols directly affect climate by scattering and absorbing incident solar radiation. The magnitude of the impact is dependent upon the wavelength of incoming light, but is typically approximated near 550 nm. As a result, climate models can have large uncertainties for aerosol contributions when considering the solar spectrum. An aerosol differential optical absorption spectrometer (A-DOAS) has been developed to address to measure aerosol extinction from mid-ultraviolet to near infrared. The instrument consists of a closed UV-Vis spectrometer coupled to a White-type multi-pass gas cell with an adjustable path length of up to 20 meters. Laboratory extinction measurements of polystyrene …
Variation In Foliar Nitrogen And Albedo In Response To Nitrogen Fertilization And Elevated Carbon Dioxide, Haley F. Wicklein
Variation In Foliar Nitrogen And Albedo In Response To Nitrogen Fertilization And Elevated Carbon Dioxide, Haley F. Wicklein
Master's Theses and Capstones
It has recently been demonstrated that foliar nitrogen is positively correlated with surface albedo over a broad range of plant functional types. However, the mechanism(s) driving the nitrogen-albedo relationship remain elusive. This study investigated leaf spectral properties from three deciduous species subjected to either nitrogen or CO2 fertilization and compared results to measured chemical and structural properties. We measured reflectance and transmittance, foliar nitrogen, leaf mass per unit area, water content, and d13C values for stacks of 1, 2, 4, and 8 leaves. Nitrogen was the best predictor of leaf-level albedo of the traits that we measured. There were no …

Genomic Resource Development For A Diploid Mint: Mentha Longifolia, Zahra Hadadian
Master's Theses and Capstones
This research project aimed to develop genomic resources needed to enable construction of a genetic linkage map of the diploid mint species Mentha longifolia. Such a map would facilitate identification of plant genes involved in resistance to Verticillium fungal infection. For this purpose, a small genomic library was constructed from germplasm accession CMEN 585, 279 genomic inserts were sequenced and annotated and 19 PCR primer pairs were designed and tested on two resistant and two susceptible accessions. The Cleaved Modified Polymorphic Sequence (CAPS) method of molecular marker genotyping was found to detect little variation between crossing parents CMEN 585 (resistant) …
Abiotic Immobilization Of Nitrate In Forest Soil: A Double Level Approach, Richard Graham Maclean
Abiotic Immobilization Of Nitrate In Forest Soil: A Double Level Approach, Richard Graham Maclean
Master's Theses and Capstones
Abiotic immobilization of nitrogen may help explain nitrogen retention in soils under chronic nitrogen addition. Methodological limitations have made differentiating between abiotic and biotic immobilization in live soils difficult. This study attempted to make this differentiation with isotopically labeled nitrate, 15N18O3- . My hypothesis was that during biological reduction and assimilation of 15N, 18O would be lost as labeled water, but some 18O would be retained in abiotic reactions with soil chemicals. Lab incubations of soils from a Pinus resinosa stand were treated with 0.140 mg 15N g-1 dry soil of K15N18O3, for 0.25, 1 and 4 hours. Mean mass …
Determination Of Hydraulic Conductivity Using The Permeafor, Amy C. Larrabee
Determination Of Hydraulic Conductivity Using The Permeafor, Amy C. Larrabee
Master's Theses and Capstones
Hydraulic conductivity is a soil characteristic that describes the flow of water through soil due to the presence of interconnected voids. This property is difficult to accurately and rapidly evaluate in the laboratory and in the field. A device known as the Permeafor has been developed in Strasbourg, France aimed at evaluating hydraulic conductivity in situ. The tool is approximately 80 centimeters in length, and is specially designed to test lateral hydraulic conductivity. A half-scale of the Permeafor was constructed at the University of New Hampshire in order to test soils at shallow depth using a portable penetration system. The …
Numerical Simulations Of Combined Wave-Current Bottom Boundary Layers, Gary R. Margelowsky
Numerical Simulations Of Combined Wave-Current Bottom Boundary Layers, Gary R. Margelowsky
Master's Theses and Capstones
The hydrodynamics of wave-current bottom boundary layers are examined with a quasi-three-dimensional non-hydrostatic bottom boundary layer model, Dune. Flow is simulated by resolving the Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes equations with a k-o 2 nd order turbulence closure. The model simulations are performed for a range of theoretical and observed hydrodynamic forcing conditions to examine the boundary layer sensitivity to the wave and current forcing and bedform resolution. The model is evaluated with field observations of velocity profiles and seabed geometry collected at the Martha's Vineyard Coastal Observatory (MVCO, Edgartown, MA) in 2005 in 13 m water depth.
Model simulations forced by observed …
Regulation Of Photoreceptor Phosphodiesterase By Prenyl Binding Protein And By Other Interacting Proteins In Photoreceptor Cells, Hannah J. Gitschier
Regulation Of Photoreceptor Phosphodiesterase By Prenyl Binding Protein And By Other Interacting Proteins In Photoreceptor Cells, Hannah J. Gitschier
Master's Theses and Capstones
Photoreceptor phosphodiesterase (PDE6) is a central component of the visual pathway. While initial PDE6 activation following light stimulation of photoreceptors is well understood, regulation of PDE6 during recovery and light adaptation may require additional components that interact with PDE6. Two approaches were taken to characterize these potential interactions. The first explored the interaction of PDE6 with prenyl binding protein (PrBP/delta) and demonstrated that changes in membrane localization of PDE6 may occur during light adaptation as a result of association with PrBP/delta. The second approach characterized the PDE6 "interactome" by a mass spectrometric identification of 75 proteins that co-purify with PDE6 …
An Evaluation Of Supplemental Food To Increase Winter Survival Of Cottontail Rabbits, Toni Weidman
An Evaluation Of Supplemental Food To Increase Winter Survival Of Cottontail Rabbits, Toni Weidman
Master's Theses and Capstones
The New England cottontail is currently endangered throughout much of its range. The cause of this decline has been habitat loss that has facilitated intense predation. Cottontails living on small patches have high mortality rates due to lack of quality cover and browse and high predation pressure. The goal of this study was to determine if provisioning supplemental food during the winter could increase cottontail survival rates by reducing risky foraging behavior in poor habitat that exposes the rabbits to predators. Among fed rabbits the survival rate (70%) was substantially greater than the survival rate for unfed rabbits (32%). A …
Synthesis Of 1,4,7-Triazacyclononane Pendant-Armed Chelators And Their Metal Complexes, Elizabeth Garcia Cardona
Synthesis Of 1,4,7-Triazacyclononane Pendant-Armed Chelators And Their Metal Complexes, Elizabeth Garcia Cardona
Master's Theses and Capstones
Pendant-armed cyclic polyamines have been demonstrated to be promising ligands for the development of new metal-based radiopharmaceuticals for positron-emission tomography (PET). Macrocyclic polyamines bearing pendant arms can effectively bind specific metals with suitable complexation kinetics and stability while attached to a tumor-targeting vector or peptide. 64Cu-radiolabeled peptides containing the chelator 1,4,7-triazacyclononane 1,4,7-triacetate have been shown to possess superior properties which overcome commonly observed problems such as demetallation and accumulation of the radio-metal in non-targeted tissues. To model these radiolabeled bioconjugates and to gain insight into this observed bio-stability, the synthesis of a copper (II) complex of a new triazacyclononane derivative …
The Unprecedented Event: Acknowledging Badiou’S Challenge To Art And Its Education, Jan Jagodzinski
The Unprecedented Event: Acknowledging Badiou’S Challenge To Art And Its Education, Jan Jagodzinski
Journal of Social Theory in Art Education
In terms of this year’s journal theme, ”unprecedented,” there is no other contemporary philosopher who has a more radical notion than Alain Badiou when it comes to theorizing the new; that is, the emergence of an unprecedented Event ex nihilio—not novel or innovative, but free of the authority of any prior example—to make a truth claim. For art educators, especially for the Social Caucus, Badiou offers a challenge to what has largely captured the theoretical writing in this journal — namely aesthetics and representation. As well intentioned as these theorizations have been concerning identity politics and critical theory stemming from …

Journal of Social Theory in Art Education
In this article, I explore, with you, artists’ socio-political disruptions with communication technologies to inspire political action and social change, and how such art can be environmentally and socially useful. How does art function politically? What is activist art? What non-violent forms of dissent or disruptions to harmful practices are possible today with digital technologies, and how do artists manifest political perspectives in their practice?
