Integrating Horizontal Gene Transfer And Common Descent To Depict Evolution And Contrast It With ‘‘Common Design, Guillermo Paz-Y-Mino C., Avelina Espinosa

Arts & Sciences Faculty Publications

Horizontal gene transfer (HGT) and common descent interact in space and time. Because events of HGT co-occur with phylogenetic evolution, it is difficult to depict evolutionary patterns graphically. Tree-like representations of life’s diversification are useful, but they ignore the significance of HGT in evolutionary history, particularly of unicellular organisms, ancestors of multicellular life. Here we integrate the reticulated-tree model, ring of life, symbiogenesis whole-organism model, and eliminative pattern pluralism to represent evolution. Using Entamoeba histolytica alcohol dehydrogenase 2 (EhADH2), a bifunctional enzyme in the glycolytic pathway of amoeba, we illustrate how EhADH2 could be the product of both horizontally acquired …

Bacterial Acquisition In Juveniles Of Several Broadcast Spawning Coral Species, Koty H. Sharp, Kim B. Ritchie Jan 2010

Bacterial Acquisition In Juveniles Of Several Broadcast Spawning Coral Species, Koty H. Sharp, Kim B. Ritchie

Arts & Sciences Faculty Publications

Coral animals harbor diverse microorganisms in their tissues, including archaea, bacteria, viruses, and zooxanthellae. The extent to which coral-bacterial associations are specific and the mechanisms for their maintenance across generations in the environment are unknown. The high diversity of bacteria in adult coral colonies has made it challenging to identify species-specific patterns. Localization of bacteria in gametes and larvae of corals presents an opportunity for determining when bacterial-coral associations are initiated and whether they are dynamic throughout early development. This study focuses on the early onset of bacterial associations in the mass spawning corals Montastraea annularis, M. franksi, M. faveolata, …

Stealth Predation And The Predatory Success Of The Invasive Ctenophore Mnemiopsis Leidyi, Sean Colin, John H. Costello, Lars J. Hansson, Josefin Titelman, John O. Dabiri Jan 2010

Stealth Predation And The Predatory Success Of The Invasive Ctenophore Mnemiopsis Leidyi, Sean Colin, John H. Costello, Lars J. Hansson, Josefin Titelman, John O. Dabiri

Arts & Sciences Faculty Publications

In contrast to higher metazoans such as copepods and fish, ctenophores are a basal metazoan lineage possessing a relatively narrow set of sensory-motor capabilities. Yet lobate ctenophores can capture prey at rates comparable to sophisticated predatory copepods and fish, and they are capable of altering the composition of coastal planktonic communities. Here, we demonstrate that the predatory success of the lobate ctenophore Mnemiopsis leidyi lies in its use of cilia to generate a feeding current that continuously entrains large volumes of fluid, yet is virtually undetectable to its prey. This form of stealth predation enables M. leidyi to feed as …

Actions Of Ncx, Pmca And Serca On Short-Term Facilitation And Maintenance Of Transmission In Nerve Terminals, Mohati Desai-Shah, Robin L. Cooper Jan 2010

Actions Of Ncx, Pmca And Serca On Short-Term Facilitation And Maintenance Of Transmission In Nerve Terminals, Mohati Desai-Shah, Robin L. Cooper

Biology Faculty Publications

Residual Ca2+ can accumulate in the nerve terminal during repetitive stimulation; thus, the basis for short-term facilitation (STF). The plasmalemmal Na+/Ca2+ exchanger [NCX], the Ca2+-ATPase (PMCA) and the sarcoplasmic/endoplasmic reticulum Ca2+-ATPase (SERCA) on the endoplasmic reticulum are three important Ca2+ regulatory processes in controlling [Ca2+]i. The role of these [Ca2+]i regulators in the development and maintenance of STF was addressed at the neuromuscular junction. When the NCX is compromised by reduced [Na+]o, the EPSP amplitudes decrease, but with KB-R7943 (a reverse blocker of NCX) …

Marine Science Faculty Publications

The shelled pteropod (sea butterfly) Limacina helicina is currently recognised as a species complex comprising two sub-species and at least five “forma”. However, at the species level it is considered to be bipolar, occurring in both the Arctic and Antarctic oceans. Due to its aragonite shell and polar distribution L. helicina is particularly vulnerable to ocean acidification. As a key indicator of the acidification process, and a major component of polar ecosystems, L. helicina has become a focus for acidification research. New observations that taxonomic groups may respond quite differently to acidification prompted us to reassess the taxonomic status of …

A Spectrographic Analysis Of American Kestrel (Falco Sparverius) Vocalizations : Do Broodmates Sound More Like Each Other Than Non-Related Broods?, Erica Gloria Mueller

Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects

Using spectrographic analysis, I studied the vocalizations of American Kestrel (Falco sparverius) chicks to determine if siblings sounded more like each other than nonrelated chicks. I also performed a feasibility study on obtaining and analyzing vocalizations of wild adult kestrels. A total of 144 vocal recordings was obtained from 67 female and 77 male kestrel chicks in the 2005 and 2006 kestrel breeding seasons. Sixteen adult kestrel vocal samples were also obtained from eleven females and five males, each a parent to one of the broods that were audio-recorded.

Fifteen vocal parameters were analyzed through spectrographic analysis for each individual …

Relocation Revisited: Sex Trafficking Of Native Women In The United States, Sarah Deer Jan 2010

Relocation Revisited: Sex Trafficking Of Native Women In The United States, Sarah Deer

Faculty Scholarship

The Trafficking Victim Protection Act of 2000 (TVPA) signaled a comprehensive campaign by the United States (US) government to address the scourge of human trafficking in the US and abroad. The US rhetoric about sex trafficking suggests that the problem originates in foreign countries and/or is recent problem. Neither claim is correct. This article details the historical and legal context of sex trafficking from its origin among the colonial predecessors of the US and documents the commercial trafficking of Native women over several centuries. Native women have experienced generations of enslavement, exploitation, exportation, and relocation. Human trafficking is not just …

Surrogate Selection: An Increasingly Viable, But Limited, Solution To Intractable Futility Disputes, Thaddeus Mason Pope Jan 2010

Surrogate Selection: An Increasingly Viable, But Limited, Solution To Intractable Futility Disputes, Thaddeus Mason Pope

Faculty Scholarship

This article reviews the strengths and weaknesses of “surrogate selection” as a solution to intractable medical futility disputes. It concludes that while surrogate selection is an increasingly viable solution, it remains only a partial solution because it is often difficult or impossible to demonstrate that a surrogate demanding non-recommended end-of-life medical treatment is acting outside the scope of her authority.

Over the past twelve years, many states have been developing new legislative solutions to intractable medical futility disputes. The most widely-discussed solution empowers healthcare providers to unilaterally refuse patient- or surrogate-requested treatment that the provider deems inappropriate. In Texas, for …

Gas Smalls Awful: U.N. Forces, Riot-Control Agents, And The Chemical Weapons Convention, James D. Fry Jan 2010

Gas Smalls Awful: U.N. Forces, Riot-Control Agents, And The Chemical Weapons Convention, James D. Fry

Michigan Journal of International Law

This Article takes a comprehensive look at the use of riot-control agents (RCAs) by U.N. forces and the legal issues that arise as a result. This Article is the first to look at these legal issues from a practical perspective, not merely a theoretical one, because prior publications have questioned what would happen if U.N. forces used these weapons, whereas this Article analyzes forty instances of actual use. This Article is designed to spark debate within the areas of peacekeeping law, collective security law, the responsibility of international organizations, and arms control law relating to RCAs, and provides compelling legal …

Phenotypic Divergence During The Invasion Of Phyla Canescens In Australia And France: Evidence For Selection-Driven Evolution, Cheng-Yuan Xu, Mic H. Julien, Mohammad Fatemi, Christophe Girod, Rieks D. Van Klinken, Caroline L. Gross, Stephen J. Novak Jan 2010

Phenotypic Divergence During The Invasion Of Phyla Canescens In Australia And France: Evidence For Selection-Driven Evolution, Cheng-Yuan Xu, Mic H. Julien, Mohammad Fatemi, Christophe Girod, Rieks D. Van Klinken, Caroline L. Gross, Stephen J. Novak

Biology Faculty Publications and Presentations

Rapid adaptive evolution has been advocated as a mechanism that promotes invasion. Demonstrating adaptive evolution in invasive species requires rigorous analysis of phenotypic shifts driven by selection. Here, we document selection-driven evolution of Phyla canescens, an Argentine weed, in two invaded regions (Australia and France). Invasive populations possessed similar or higher diversity than native populations, and displayed mixed lineages from different sources, suggesting that genetic bottlenecks in both countries might have been alleviated by multiple introductions. Compared to native populations, Australian populations displayed more investment in sexual reproduction, whereas French populations possessed enhanced vegetative reproduction and growth. We partitioned …

Holding The High Ground: The Operational Calculus Of Torture And Coercive Interrogation, Joseph L. Falvey Jr., Brian D. Eck Jan 2010

Holding The High Ground: The Operational Calculus Of Torture And Coercive Interrogation, Joseph L. Falvey Jr., Brian D. Eck

Campbell Law Review

In Part I of this Article, we first consider some of the strengths and weaknesses of the partially adequate objections. In Part II, we explore torture in light of the biological distinction between pain and suffering and consider the implications of that distinction for our understanding of free will and the fighting spirit. Finally, in Part III, we suggest a more fundamental view of torture that navigates between the Scylla of naive moralizing and the Charybdis of ticking time-bombs. We propose that the debate should focus on torture's effect on our country's moral certainty, on the fighting spirit of our …

Variability Of Lower Extremity Joint Kinematics During Backward Walking In A Virtual Environment, Dimitrios Kastavelis, Mukul Mukherjee, Leslie M. Decker, Nikolaos Stergiou Jan 2010

Variability Of Lower Extremity Joint Kinematics During Backward Walking In A Virtual Environment, Dimitrios Kastavelis, Mukul Mukherjee, Leslie M. Decker, Nikolaos Stergiou

Journal Articles

Backward walking (BW) shows significant differences with forward walking (FW) and these differences are potentially useful in rehabilitation. However the lack of visual cues makes BW risky. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of visual cues provided by a virtual environment on FW and BW on gait variability. Each subject underwent four conditions of treadmill walking at self-selected pace. The subjects walked backwards in three conditions and forwards in the fourth condition. A virtual corridor was displayed to the subjects in the FW condition (forward optic flow) and two of the backward conditions (forward and backward …

The Eminence Of Imminence And The Myopia Of Markets, 9 J. Marshall Rev. Intell. Prop. L. 674 (2010), Teneille R. Brown

UIC Review of Intellectual Property Law

This article questions the privileging of disaster, or imminent threat, over more distant threats to public health. In many cases, this privileging makes sense as we do not have time to evaluate the threat under traditional frameworks. But in some cases, we privilege disaster in ways that may be ethically and legally unsound. Here, I am interested in a particular type of public health threat—the negative consequences that stem from climate change. In this article, I view the climate change discussion through the lens of distributive justice. I analyze the ethical as well as legal arguments in support of encouraging …

The New Ontologies: The Effect Of Copyright Protection On Public Scientific Data Sharing Using Semantic Web Ontologies, 10 J. Marshall Rev. Intell. Prop. L. 181 (2010), Andrew Clearwater

UIC Review of Intellectual Property Law

The semantic web is going to become an important tool for scientists who need to accurately share data given context through structured relationships. The structure that defines contextual relationships on the semantic web is known as an ontology; which is a hierarchical organization of a knowledge domain that contains entities and their relations. This paper seeks to answer whether semantic web ontologies are protectable by copyright, and regardless of the outcome, what the best practices are for the scientific community. The best practices for the scientific community should include the adoption of a machine readable ontology license which disclaims copyright …

Deadly Delay / Postponed Pills, 10 J. Marshall Rev. Intell. Prop. L. 254 (2010), Christopher R. Walker

UIC Review of Intellectual Property Law

Since 1984, generic pharmaceuticals have continued to grow, and are an important element in our national struggle to increase affordable health care options in the United States. The Hatch-Waxman Act has played a pivotal role in helping to create a regulatory environment that fosters the development of generic pharmaceuticals, thereby increasing access to lower-cost alternatives to more expensive drugs. An important part of balancing the interests of the generic manufacturers against those of the primary pharmaceutical makers is the thirty-month stay provision of the Hatch-Waxman Act. This comment begins by taking a look at the history of the Hatch-Waxman Act …

Influence Of Selenium And Mercury Chemistries On The Progression Of Cardiomyopathy In Pygmy Sperm Whales, Kogia Breviceps, Colleen E. Bryan Jan 2010

Influence Of Selenium And Mercury Chemistries On The Progression Of Cardiomyopathy In Pygmy Sperm Whales, Kogia Breviceps, Colleen E. Bryan

MUSC Theses and Dissertations

Pygmy sperm whales (Kogia breviceps) are the second most frequently stranded toothed whale along the U.S. Atlantic and Gulf coasts. More than half of documented cases exhibit signs of cardiomyopathy (CMP). Many factors may contribute to the development of idiopathic CMP in K. breviceps, including genetics, infectious agents, contaminants, biotoxins, and dietary intake (vitamins, selenium, mercury, and pro-oxidants). Nutritional deficiencies of selenium (Se) have been shown in mouse and bovine models to contribute to CMP. The K. breviceps diet, consisting mainly of squid, imparts a high dose of mercury (Hg), which requires detoxification, and polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) that require …

During the last decade, the use of herbal medicine has expanded globally and gained popularity. With the tremendous expansion in the use of herbal medicine worldwide, safety and efficacy as well as quality control of herbal medicines have become more and more issues of concern for both health authorities and the public. Although herbal medicine has been in use for hundreds to thousands years, very limited science-based data exist to explicit its chemical constituents, pharmacological activities and toxicity. Therefore, lack of scientific evidence for herbal medicine usage elicits the need for systematic studies of herbal medicine, including phytochemical, analytical, and …

Mental Health And Chronic Disease, Marlene B. Huff, Kimberly K. Mcclanahan, Hatim A. Omar Jan 2010

Mental Health And Chronic Disease, Marlene B. Huff, Kimberly K. Mcclanahan, Hatim A. Omar

Pediatrics Faculty Publications

By 2015, worldwide, 1.2 billion children aged 5-14 years will have some kind of significant chronic disease. Although scientific evidence indicates that children with chronic illness have more mental health issues than their healthy peers, many controversies and gaps in the literature exist. It is imperative that an understanding of the effects of chronic illness upon the mental health status of children and adolescents be undertaken. This chapter uses a biopsychosocial perspective to investigate the connection between chronic illness and mental health. The intent of the chapter is to suggest ways that medical and mental health professionals can provide services …
