Resurrecting Parents Of Legal Orphans: Un-Terminating Parental Rights, Lashanda Taylor Adams Jan 2010

Resurrecting Parents Of Legal Orphans: Un-Terminating Parental Rights, Lashanda Taylor Adams

Journal Articles

Despite federal and state legislation that requires termination of parental rights when a child has remained in foster care for a specified period of time, studies indicate that relationships with their biological parents (and other relatives) remain important to children in foster care.3 Especially for children whose parents’ parental rights have been terminated, the connection with their biological parent remains central to their development and these children make efforts to maintain that connection. Once it becomes clear that the purpose for terminating the parental rights (i.e., freeing the child for adoption) will not be served, in an increasing number of …

Special Issues In Transcultural, Transracial, And Gay And Lesbian Parenting And Adoption, Frank E. Vandervort, Robert B. Sanoshy

Book Chapters

The adoption of children whose natural parents are unable to or incapable of caring for them by adults who are able to provide for them has existed throughout human history in one form or another (In re Smith Estate 1955; Miller et al. 2007). Before the mid-1800s, however, there was no formal mechanism for a person interested in adopting a child in the United States to do so (Bartholet 1999). In 1851, the Massachusetts legislature enacted the Massachusetts Adoption of Children Act (General Court of Massachusetts 1851). Though enacted more than 150 years ago, the act's basic structure is clearly …

Enigmatic Structures On Upper Pleistocene Laminar Caliche Surfaces Of The Bahamas: Animal, Vegetable, Or Mineral?, H. Allen Curran Jan 2010

Enigmatic Structures On Upper Pleistocene Laminar Caliche Surfaces Of The Bahamas: Animal, Vegetable, Or Mineral?, H. Allen Curran

Geosciences: Faculty Publications

Trace fossils are a common and important component of most Quaternary carbonate rock units of the Bahamas and other, similar tropical carbonate regions. In the Bahamas, the Pleistocene-Holocene boundary is typically marked by a calichified paleosol horizon that formed on the exposed limestone surfaces of the islands during the time of lowered sea level of the Last Glacial. On the north coast of San Salvador Island, an extensive horizontal surface of laminar caliche is exposed at Singer Bar Point and to the west. This surface formed on carbonate eolianite of Late Pleistocene (Eemian) age and is overlain by Holocene eolianite. …

Maintaining Incentives For Healthcare Innovation: Response To The Ftc's Report On Follow-On Biologics, Christopher M. Holman

Faculty Works

Congress is considering legislation that would create an abbreviated FDA approval process for follow-on biologics (FOBs), which proponents anticipate will promote competition and lower prices in the market for biologic drugs. In June of 2009 the FTC published a report on FOBs (“the FTC Report”), which attempts to forecast the nature of competition between innovator biologics and FOBs, and offers a number of substantive recommendations regarding specific provisions of the various FOB bills. In particular, the FTC Report concludes that there is essentially no justification for the inclusion of a substantial data exclusivity period (“DEP”) for innovators in pending FOB …

Journal of Dental Sciences

Background/purpose Stable osseointegration between implant threads and the surrounding marginal bone provides the mechanical base of an implant for daily chewing activity. The contact area of implant-bone interfaces and the concentrated stresses on the marginal bones are principal concerns of implant designers. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of thread shape and taper on the initial stability of the implant-bone structure. Materials and methods The thread design was parameterized by shape and taper. Thread shapes included symmetrical, square, and buttressed. Thread tapers were divided into cylindrical and conical profiles. Nine variations of the thread design were …

Dying For Love: Homosexuality In The Middle East, Heather Simmons

Human Rights & Human Welfare

Today in the United States, the most frequent references to the Middle East are concerned with the War on Terrorism. However, there is another, hidden battle being waged: the war for human rights on the basis of sexuality. Homosexuality is a crime in many of the Middle Eastern states and is punishable by death in Sudan, Saudi Arabia, Yemen, Qatar, Kuwait, and Iran (Ungar 2002). Chronic abuses and horrific incidences such as the 2009 systematic murders of hundreds of “gay” men in Iraq are seldom reported in the international media. Speculation as to why this population is hidden includes the …

Beyond The Brink: Somalia’S Health Crisis, Bryson Brown

Human Rights & Human Welfare

Somalia is approaching a daunting anniversary: in 2011, the country will begin its twentieth consecutive year without an effective centralized government. The fall of the Soviet supported Siad Barre government in 1991 created a power vacuum that was filled by warlords, clans and, most recently, Islamists. Fourteen interim governments have failed to supplant those forces. Health infrastructure and the general health of the population have been devastated as a result. Precious few organizations are still providing health-related services. Unfortunately, recent events suggest that this crisis is going to get worse before it gets better.

Do Athletes Respond Differently To Academic And Social Stress? An Examination Of Cortisol And Perceived Stress Throughout A Semester In College Athletes And Typical College Students, Rita Rose Holak

Behavioral Neuroscience Honors Papers

In order to be a successful athlete, you must be able to perform well under stressful situations. Are athletes also better at responding to stress under other circumstances such as social and academic stress? The present study investigated the impact of exercise on salivary cortisol and perceived stress in college students. Cortisol was sampled throughout a semester as well as before and after a laboratory‐based stress test during the final exam period. It was found that athletes had the largest increase in cortisol between baseline and the final exam period and the sedentary students had the smallest increase. Also, cortisol …

Resilience Of Ground Transportation Networks: A Case Study On Melbourne, George Leu, Hussein Abbass, Neville Curtis Jan 2010

Resilience Of Ground Transportation Networks: A Case Study On Melbourne, George Leu, Hussein Abbass, Neville Curtis

World Transit Research

A city with a transportation system so well designed that failure of any arbitrary waypoint triggers no major event, is the major goal for every single urban planning and management board. However, city planning comes with inherent design constraints. Research is needed to understand the interaction between these constraints and city resilience. This understanding is useful for those planning for a new city and more importantly, when evaluating and designing cost-effective ways to improve the resilience of existing cities.
In this paper, we promote a proactive attitude for prevention. We use network analysis to estimate the resilience of ground transportation …

The Occurrence Of Chestnut Lamprey (Lchthyomyzon Castaneus; Pisces: Petromyzontidae) In The Chariton River In South-Central Iowa, Mark K. Flammang, John R. Olson

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

In the mid-1990s, Iowa Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) Fisheries Bureau biologists began receiving reports from anglers of a parasitic lamprey attached to fish taken immediately downstream from Rathbun Lake on the Chariton River in south-central Iowa; these reports have continued to present. In 2002, the IDNR received and identified a chestnut lamprey (Ichthyomyzon castaneus Girard) from an angler who removed the lamprey from a common carp (Cyprinus carpio Linnaeus) he captured. This record was the first for a lamprey from the Chariton River drainage in Iowa. Five additional specimens of chestnut lamprey have been collected and identified …

Experiencing Emotional Abuse During Childhood And Witnessing Interparental Verbal Aggression As Related To Emotional Aggression In Undergraduate Dating Relationships, Robert J. Milletich, Michelle Kelley

OUR Journal: ODU Undergraduate Research Journal

The present study examined whether witnessing interparental verbal aggression and/or experiencing emotional abuse during childhood were associated with emotional abuse in current or recent dating relationships in college students (M = 19.51 years; SD = 2.02). Participants (N = 715) completed the Conflicts Tactics 2-CA Scale (Straus & Donnelly, 2001), the Exposure to Abusive and Supportive Environments Parenting Inventory (Nicholas & Bieber, 1997), and the Emotional Abuse Scale (Murphy & Hoover, 1999). Results showed that witnessing interparental verbal aggression predicted males‟ self-use of Restrictive Engulfment and their partners‟ use of Restrictive Engulfment. For females, witnessing interparental verbal aggression predicted self-use …

Why Appellate Courts Have Rejected The Argument That The Defense Of Marriage Act Trumps The Parental Kidnapping Prevention Act, Barbara Cox Jan 2010

Why Appellate Courts Have Rejected The Argument That The Defense Of Marriage Act Trumps The Parental Kidnapping Prevention Act, Barbara Cox

Faculty Scholarship

The author seeks to explain why courts should not be permitted to interpret the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) to displace judgment recognition based on a forum state's public policy against legal relationships for same-sex couples. If courts interpret DOMA in this manner, nothing would prevent Congress from exempting other types of judgments from the protection of the Full Faith and Credit clause, thereby permitting relitigation of judgments that are now considered final and binding in every state.

Different Hydrodynamic Model For Gas-Phase Propylene Polymemation In A Catalytic Fluidized Bed Reactor, A. Shamiri, Mohd Azlan Hussain, F.S. Mjalli, N. Mostoufi

Research Publications (2006 to 2010)

A comparative simulation study was carried out using the improved well-mixed, constant bubble size and well mixed models. These fluidized bed reactor models, combined with comprehensive kinetics for propylene homo-polymerization in the presence of a multiple active site Ziegler-Natta catalyst. In the improved model, the effect of the presence of particles in the bubbles and the excess gas in the emulsion phase was taken into account to improve the quantitative understanding of the actual fluidized bed process. The superficial gas velocity and catalyst feed rate have a strong effect on the hydrodynamics and reaction rate, which results in a greater …
