Study Abroad Dynamics: Anthropological Perspectives, Jonathan Maravelias
Study Abroad Dynamics: Anthropological Perspectives, Jonathan Maravelias
Senior Honors Theses and Projects
Americans typically lack cultural reflexivity--most Americans will even deny that there is a specific American culture. Many Americans often experience heightened states of anxiety and feelings of alienation, which several anthropologists and cross-cultural psychologists attribute to an unhealthy reliance on individualism and consumerism. If Americans could learn cultural reflexivity, then they may experience a sense of connectedness and higher self-esteem. Since cultural reflexivity can be learned, I have investigated whether or not study abroad programs help to teach it. More generally, I have studied the education abroad experience anthropologically through participating in a 35-day tour of the Mediterranean offered by …

Waterfowl Of North America: Perching Ducks, Tribe Cairinini, Paul A. Johnsgard
Waterfowl of North America, Revised Edition (2010) by Paul A. Johnsgard
The perching ducks and related gooselike forms are a diverse array of some fourteen species that are largely subtropical to tropical in occurrence. Although they vary in size from as little as about a half a pound in the "pygmy geese" (Nettapus) to more than twenty pounds in the spur-winged geese (Plectropterus), all possess some common features.*These include a tendency toward hole-nesting, especially in trees; sharp claws; associated perching abilities; and long tails that presumably increase braking effectiveness when landing in trees. Nearly all species exhibit extensive iridescent coloration in the body, especially on the upper …
Waterfowl Of North America: Sea Ducks, Tribe Mergini, Paul A. Johnsgard
Waterfowl Of North America: Sea Ducks, Tribe Mergini, Paul A. Johnsgard
Waterfowl of North America, Revised Edition (2010) by Paul A. Johnsgard
The sea ducks are a group of mostly arctic-adapted diving ducks that usually winter in coastal waters and typically breed in tundra situations or in northern forests. All twenty species (two of which are now extinct) depend predominantly on animal sources of food, and some feed exclusively on such materials. These foods include shellfish, mollusks, other invertebrates, and aquatic vertebrates such as fish. In general the sea ducks are thus not regarded as highly as table birds as are the surface-feeding ducks and some of the more vegetarian pochard species. Like the pochards, their legs are placed well to the …

A Conceptual Guide To Natural History Museum Visitors’ Understanding Of Evolution, E. Margaret Evans, Amy N. Spiegel, Wendy Gram, Brandy N. Frazier, Medha Tare, Sarah Thompson, Judy Diamond
Department of Educational Psychology: Faculty Publications
Museum visitors are an ideal population for assessing the persistence of the conceptual barriers that make it difficult to grasp Darwinian evolutionary theory. In comparison with other members of the public, they are more likely to be interested in natural history, have higher education levels, and be exposed to the relevant content. If museum visitors do not grasp evolutionary principles, it seems unlikely that other members of the general public would do so. In the current study, 32 systematically selected visitors to three Midwest museums of natural history provided detailed open-ended explanations of biological change in seven diverse organisms. They …

The Vegetation Outlook (Vegout): A New Method For Predicting Vegetation Seasonal Greenness, Tsegaye Tadesse, Brian D. Wardlow, Michael J. Hayes, Mark D. Svoboda, Jesslyn F. Brown
National Drought Mitigation Center: Faculty Publications
The vegetation outlook (VegOut) is a geospatial tool for predicting general vegetation condition patterns across large areas. VegOut predicts a standardized seasonal greenness (SSG) measure, which represents a general indicator of relative vegetation health. VegOut predicts SSG values at multiple time steps (two to six weeks into the future) based on the analysis of “historical patterns” (i.e., patterns at each 1 km grid cell and time of the year) of satellite, climate, and oceanic data over an 18-year period (1989 to 2006). The model underlying VegOut capitalizes on historical climate–vegetation interactions and ocean–climate teleconnections (such as El Niño and the …

High-grain adaptation programs are widely used with feedlot cattle to balance enhanced growth performance against the risk of acidosis. This adaptation to a high-grain diet from a high-forage diet is known to change the rumen microbial population structure and help establish a stable microbial population within the rumen. Therefore, to evaluate bacterial population dynamics during adaptation to a high-grain diet, 4 ruminally cannulated beef steers were adapted to a high-grain diet using a step-up diet regimen containing grain and hay at ratios of 20:80, 40:60, 60:40, and 80:20. The rumen bacterial populations were evaluated at each stage of the step-up …

College Of Agricultural Sciences And Natural Resources: 17th Annual Report August 1, 2009-July 31, 2010
College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources (CASNR): Annual Reports
Introduction excerpt
Seventeenth Annual Report for the College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources (CASNR). Reflects on the accomplishments of our faculty, staff and students, reviews the year, and serves as an archive of accomplishments. Primarily covers the period August 1, 2009 to July 31, 2010.
Seventy-three schools competed for recognition as innovators in undergraduate education. Only 16 were selected. UNL is one of the 16 - the only one in our peer group as well as the only one in the Big 12. In fact, UNL is one of only five major research universities to be named ‘first tier’ …
Asian Carp And The Great Lakes Region, Eugene H. Buck, Harold F. Upton, Charles V. Stern, James E. Nicols
Asian Carp And The Great Lakes Region, Eugene H. Buck, Harold F. Upton, Charles V. Stern, James E. Nicols
Congressional Research Service Reports
Four species of non-indigenous Asian carp are expanding their range in U.S. waterways, resulting in a variety of concerns and problems. Three species—bighead, silver, and black carp—are of particular note, based on the perceived degree of environmental concern. Current controversy relates to what measures might be necessary and sufficient to prevent movement of Asian carp from the Mississippi River drainage into the Great Lakes through the Chicago Area Waterway System. Bills have been introduced in the 111th Congress to direct actions to avoid the possibility of carp becoming established in the Great Lakes.
According to the Great Lakes Fishery Commission, …
Agriculture-Based Biofuels: Overview And Emerging Issues, Randy Schnepf
Agriculture-Based Biofuels: Overview And Emerging Issues, Randy Schnepf
Congressional Research Service Reports
Since the late 1970s, U.S. policymakers at both the federal and state levels have enacted a variety of incentives, regulations, and programs to encourage the production and use of agriculture-based biofuels. Initially, federal biofuels policies were developed to help kick-start the biofuels industry during its early development, when neither production capacity nor a market for the finished product was widely available. Federal policy has played a key role in helping to close the price gap between biofuels and cheaper petroleum fuels. Now, as the industry has evolved, other policy goals (e.g., national energy security, climate change concerns, support for rural …
Sugar In Moderation: Sugar Diets Affect Short-Term Parasitoid Behaviour, Danielle Lightle, Mario Ambrosino, Jana C. Lee
Sugar In Moderation: Sugar Diets Affect Short-Term Parasitoid Behaviour, Danielle Lightle, Mario Ambrosino, Jana C. Lee
Entomology Papers from Other Sources
The biological control potential of parasitic wasps in the field is expected to increase with the provisioning of sugar sources, which increase longevity and replenish carbohydrate reserves. Apanteles aristoteliae is an important parasitoid of Argyrotaenia franciscana, the orange tortrix, an economic pest in fruit crops. In the present study, the effect of sugar diet on the physiological status of A. aristoteliae is investigated in the laboratory, as well as the effects of nutritional status on short-term olfactory orientation and parasitism behaviour, and the association between olfactory orientation and immediate parasitism activity. Levels of glycogen, fructose, total sugars, proportional weight …
Covert Channels In The Http Network Protocol: Channel Characterization And Detecting Man-In-The-Middle Attacks, Daryl Johnson, Bo Yuan, Peter Lutz, Erik Brown
Covert Channels In The Http Network Protocol: Channel Characterization And Detecting Man-In-The-Middle Attacks, Daryl Johnson, Bo Yuan, Peter Lutz, Erik Brown
Presentations and other scholarship
Network covert channels provide two entities the ability to communicate stealthily. Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP), which accounts for approximately half of all traffic on the Internet (Burke, 2007), has become the fertile ground for various network covert channels. Proliferation of network covert channels throughout the World Wide Web and other areas of cyberspace has raised new security concerns and brought both challenges and enhancements to the area of Information Warfare. Covert channels impact our ability to observe and orient in this domain and need to be better understood. They are however, extremely difficult to study as a whole. Network covert …
