Integrity Of Mating Behaviors And Seasonal Reproduction In Coyotes (Canis Latrans) Following Treatment With Estradiol Benzoate, Debra A. Carlson, Eric M. Gese Jan 2010

Integrity Of Mating Behaviors And Seasonal Reproduction In Coyotes (Canis Latrans) Following Treatment With Estradiol Benzoate, Debra A. Carlson, Eric M. Gese

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

Coyotes (Canis latrans) are seasonally monestrous and form perennial pair-bonds. Breeding is dominated by each pack’s alpha male and female, and both sexes share responsibility for territory defense and pup-rearing. They are also opportunistic predators on domestic livestock and pets. But while dominant adults have been implicated as primary killers, depredation is reduced when coyotes are without pups. Contraception, therefore, may represent a non-lethal solution for conflicts between coyotes and humans. Steroid hormones successfully control fertility in some species, but have been considered contraindicated in wildlife and canids in particular; specific concerns include possible induction of aberrant behavior, …

Arthropods Of A Semi-Natural Grassland In An Urban Environment: The John F. Kennedy International Airport, New York, Lisa Kutschbach-Brohl, Brian E. Washburn, Glen E. Bernhardt, Richard B. Chipman, Laura C. Francoeur Jan 2010

Arthropods Of A Semi-Natural Grassland In An Urban Environment: The John F. Kennedy International Airport, New York, Lisa Kutschbach-Brohl, Brian E. Washburn, Glen E. Bernhardt, Richard B. Chipman, Laura C. Francoeur

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

Semi-natural grassland habitat fragments, such as those found on airports, might be important for arthropod conservation and biodiversity in urban ecosystems. The objectives of this study were to: (1) describe the arthropod communities present within the grasslands on the John F. Kennedy International Airport and (2) assess spatial and temporal variation in those arthropod communities. We collected arthropods using a vacuum sampler during 2003 and using sweep-net collection methods during 2003 and 2004. During 2003, a total of 1,467 arthropods, representing 17 orders and 68 families were found in vacuum samples. A total of 3,784 arthropods, representing 12 orders and …

The First-Order Effect Of Holocene Northern Peatlands On Global Carbon Cycle Dynamics, Yi Wang, Nigel T. Roulet, Steve Frolking, L A. Mysak, Xiaodong Liu, Zhangdong Jin Jan 2010

The First-Order Effect Of Holocene Northern Peatlands On Global Carbon Cycle Dynamics, Yi Wang, Nigel T. Roulet, Steve Frolking, L A. Mysak, Xiaodong Liu, Zhangdong Jin

Earth Sciences

Given the fact that the estimated present-day carbon storage of Northern Peatlands (NP) is about 300-500 petagram (PgC, 1 petagram = 1015 gram), and the NP has been subject to a slow but persistent growth over the Holocene epoch, it is desirable to include the NP in studies of Holocene carbon cycle dynamics. Here we use an Earth system Model of Intermediate Complexity to study the first-order effect of NP on global carbon cycle dynamics in the Holocene. We prescribe the reconstructed NP growth based on data obtained from numerous sites (located in Western Siberia, North America, and Finland) where …

Social Entrepreneurship In Context: Identity Emergence And Legitimation, Noushi Rahman Phd, Imran Chowdhury Phd Jan 2010

Social Entrepreneurship In Context: Identity Emergence And Legitimation, Noushi Rahman Phd, Imran Chowdhury Phd

Wilson Center for Social Entrepreneurship

Community ecologists, who consider the interdependence among organizations of different forms (Hannan and Freeman, 1986), have argued that that legitimacy can flow between organizational forms if they are sufficiently related or proximate in cognitive space (Ruef, 2000). De alio legitimation, the process by which an established population can facilitate the institutionalization of an emergent population, greatly minimizes the time period needed for the new form to achieve a taken-for-granted status (Dobrev, 2001). While some studies have looked at how this process operates across populations of organizations within the commercial sector, no study has looked at how this legitimacy might travel …

Gina's Genotypes, David H. Kaye Jan 2010

Gina's Genotypes, David H. Kaye

Michigan Law Review First Impressions

In August 2009, the Board of Trustees of the University of Akron added to the university's employment policy the following proviso: "any applicant may be asked to submit fingerprints or DNA sample for purpose of a federal criminal background check." Although the federal government does not do background checks with DNA, the policy is significant because it highlights a largely unexplored feature of the Genetic Information Nondiscrimination Act of 2008 ("GINA"). Hailed by the late Senator Edward Kennedy as "the first civil rights bill of the new century of life sciences," GINA generally prohibits employers from asking for "genetic information." …

Beyond The Binary: What Can Feminists Learn From Intersex Transgender Jurisprudence, Julie Greenberg, Marybeth Herald, Mark Strasser Jan 2010

Beyond The Binary: What Can Feminists Learn From Intersex Transgender Jurisprudence, Julie Greenberg, Marybeth Herald, Mark Strasser

Michigan Journal of Gender & Law

Our panel will be discussing recent developments in the intersex and transsexual communities. The transsexual community began to organize in the 1970s, but did not fully develop into a vibrant movement until the 1990s. The intersex movement was born in the mid-1990s and has rapidly developed a strong and influential voice. Recently, both movements have undergone profound changes and each has provided new and unique theoretical perspectives that can potentially benefit other social justice groups. The purpose of our dialogue today is to describe these developments and explore how feminists could potentially benefit from the theoretical frameworks that are being …

How Many Patents Does It Take To Make A Drug - Follow-On Pharmaceutical Patents And University Licensing, Lisa Larrimore Ouellette Jan 2010

How Many Patents Does It Take To Make A Drug - Follow-On Pharmaceutical Patents And University Licensing, Lisa Larrimore Ouellette

Michigan Telecommunications & Technology Law Review

As described by Professors Dan Burk and Mark Lemley, drugs are[...] special because of the low number of patents per product: "In some industries, such as chemistry and pharmaceuticals, a single patent normally covers a single product. Much conventional wisdom in the patent system is built on the unstated assumption of such a one-to-one correspondence." Although many have repeated this one-patent, one-drug assumption, there has been little empirical analysis of how many patents actually protect each drug. In fact, most small-molecule drugs are protected by multiple patents. The average was nearly 3.5 patents per drug in 2005, with over five …

Evaluating Outcomes And Response Profiles Of A Psychological Treatment For People With Chronic Pain, Amanda J. Burger Jan 2010

Evaluating Outcomes And Response Profiles Of A Psychological Treatment For People With Chronic Pain, Amanda J. Burger

Wayne State University Dissertations

Chronic pain is a leading cause of suffering, disability, and high health care costs. Traditional treatment approaches such as medical or cognitive-behavioral interventions have produced variable and often limited results. Research has suggested

that increased rates of stressful life events, emotional disorders, and emotion regulation deficits contribute to the development and maintenance of chronic pain problems that lack clear, peripheral, biological causes. This study examined the effectiveness of an

innovative, emotion-focused treatment that directly targets patients' unresolved stress and emotional avoidance and sought to identify predictors of treatment outcome. Additionally, this study explored the effects of a novel, emotional assessment …

ABSTRACT

PERSONALITY AND RISK-TAKING BEHAVIORS IN EMERGING ADULTHOOD

by

AGNES WARD

December 2010

Advisor: Dr. Stephen B. Hillman

Major: Educational Psychology

Degree: Doctor of Philosophy

Much theory and research has focused on adolescent risk-taking behavior. Common theories include Zuckerman's (1971) perspective on sensation seeking, the problem behavior perspective identified by Jessor and Jessor (1977), and the causal model of risk-taking behavior by Irwin and Millstein (1986). While beneficial to understanding risky behaviors, these perspectives do not take into account specific personality traits that contribute to risk-taking or cognitive appraisals of risky behaviors. Further, most research has focused on the adolescent …

Quantification Of Vascular Parametric Indices Using Dynamic Contrast-Enhanced Magnetic Resonance Imaging, Areen Khaled Al.Bashir Jan 2010

Quantification Of Vascular Parametric Indices Using Dynamic Contrast-Enhanced Magnetic Resonance Imaging, Areen Khaled Al.Bashir

Wayne State University Dissertations

Dynamic contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (DCE-MRI) is a non-invasive method used to evaluate the biological activity in early clinical trials of novel drugs targeting the tumor vasculature using gadolinium-DTPA (Gd) as a contrast agent. However, it has some limitations, such as reproducibility, data acquisition times, the presence of noise, extracting contrast concentration, estimating T1 relaxation and estimating pharmacokinetic parameters.

In this work, a new approach to used fixed T1(0) which provides more reproducible DCE results has been introduced. Using this new algorithm to quantify the vascular changes in DCE-MRI, a pre-clinical renal cell carcinoma (RCC) tumor model was used to …

By

MANSI PARASRAMKA

ADVISOR: DR. SMITI V. GUPTA

MAJOR: NUTRITION AND FOOD SCIENCE

DEGREE: DOCTOR OF PHILOSPHY

Human Pancreatic Cancer (PaCa) is one of the most hostile and fourth leading cause of cancer deaths in the United States. Current standard chemotherapeutic agent for advanced PaCa is gemcitabine, a cytotoxic nucleoside analogue which results in modest response due to high degree of inherent and acquired chemo resistance. Forthcoming evidence strongly supports that non-nutritive food components have therapeutic benefits attributable to pleiotropic …

I. Microwave-Influenced Diversity-Oriented Synthesis Of Biologically Relevant Small & Natural-Product-Like Molecules Via Multicomponent Coupling Reactions Ii. I. Microwave-Influenced Diversity-Oriented Synthesis Of Biologically Relevant Small & Natural-Product-Like Molecules Via Multicomponent Coupling Reactions Ii. Synthetic Studies Toward The Total Synthesis Of The Repeating Tetrasaccharide Unit Of Zwitterionic Polysaccharide Ps A1, Soumava Santra

Wayne State University Dissertations

Microwave-influenced diversity-oriented synthesis of biologically relevant small and natural-product-like molecules via multicomponent coupling reactions (MCCRs) have been investigated. Cheap, readily available starting materials in conjunction of microwave irradiation and employment of environmentally benign solvent (e.g. water) provided a common platform that allowed to access a wide array of structurally and skeletally diverse molecules. The investigation allowed us to establish a new paradigm of diversity-activity relationships (DARs) by tuning reacting components of the MCCRs and proved that in contrary to the conventional use of microwave as a rate accelerating tool, it can be used to influence reactivity of molecules. The method …

Effect Of Dietary Folate Restriction On Colon Carcinogenesis In Dna Polymerase Β Haploinsufficient Mice, Lisa F. Ventrella Lucente Jan 2010

Effect Of Dietary Folate Restriction On Colon Carcinogenesis In Dna Polymerase Β Haploinsufficient Mice, Lisa F. Ventrella Lucente

Wayne State University Dissertations

The data presented in this research is central to establishing the role that the base excision repair pathway (BER) plays in the development and progression of colon cancer when dietary folate is deficient. Both cellular folate restriction and BER deficiencies have been shown to result in the accumulation of endogenous damage and lesions that could eventually develop into carcinogenesis. In this study, a dietary folate deficiency (FD) resulted in a significant increase in aberrant crypt foci (ACF) formation and triggered liver tumorogenesis in wildtype (WT) animals, as did a BER deficiency in DNA polymerase Β haploinsufficient (Β-pol+/-) mice exposed to …

Sex Education And Rape, Michelle J. Anderson Jan 2010

Sex Education And Rape, Michelle J. Anderson

Michigan Journal of Gender & Law

In the law of rape, consent has been and remains a gendered concept. Consent presumes female acquiescence to male sexual initiation. It presumes a man desires to penetrate a woman sexually. It presumes the woman willingly yields to the man's desires. It does not presume, and of course does not require, female sexual desire. Consent is what the law calls it when he advances and she does not put up a fight. I have argued elsewhere that the kind of thin consent that the law focuses on is not enough ethically and it should not be enough legally to justify …

The American Flag And The Body: How The Flag And The Body Create An American Meaning, Jennifer Marmo Jan 2010

The American Flag And The Body: How The Flag And The Body Create An American Meaning, Jennifer Marmo

Kaleidoscope: A Graduate Journal of Qualitative Communication Research

“The most universally recognizable symbol of American government” is the American flag (Hopkins, 1991, p. 817). The American flag is vital to our nation and to its citizens, particularly as the flag remains a major symbol during the country’s times of peace and war. This paper explores the connections between the American flag and the corporeal body. A historical review of the creation of the American flag ignites the discussion of how Americans use their physical bodies to offer meanings of the American flag. From the presented taxonomy of meanings, an interpretation of the effect of the flag on the …

Climate Change And Freshwater Resources In Oregon, Heejun Chang, Julie Jones Jan 2010

Climate Change And Freshwater Resources In Oregon, Heejun Chang, Julie Jones

Institute for Sustainable Solutions Publications and Presentations

Climate change will affect various sectors of water resources in Oregon in the 21st century. The observed trends in streamflow show significant declines in September flow and, although not significant, increases in March flow in many transient rain-snow basins. These streamflow trends are associated with rising temperature and coincident declines in snowpack in spring in the latter half of the 20th century. While there are no distinct trends in high precipitation events, such events are associated with climate variability such as ENSO and PDO. Effects of ENSO and PDO are more pronounced at the beginning and end of the wet …

Computational Structural Modelling Of Coronary Stent Deployment: A Review, David Martin, Fergal Boyle

Articles

The finite element (FE) method is a powerful investigative tool in the field of biomedical engineering, particularly in the analysis of medical devices such as coronary stents whose performance is extremely difficult to evaluate in vivo. In recent years, a number of FE studies have been carried out to simulate the deployment of coronary stents, and the results of these studies have been utilised to assess and optimise the performance of these devices. The aim of this paper is to provide a thorough review of the state-of-the-art research in this area, discussing the aims, methods and conclusions drawn from a …

Concerns Associated With Expanding Dna Databases, Candice Roman-Santos Jan 2010

Concerns Associated With Expanding Dna Databases, Candice Roman-Santos

UC Law Science and Technology Journal

The establishment of DNA databases has been and continues to be a source of controversy. Proponents of DNA databases argue that it supports a discipline that does not rely on subjective judgments and interpretations, and expanding DNA databases will not only help to solve more crimes but also exonerate innocent people who have been wrongly convicted, ultimately reducing the need to reverse previous miscarriages of justice. Opponents of DNA databases, on the other hand, argue that there is a risk of DNA being used to the exclusion of material that might prove the innocence of the suspect. Also, the fact …

Nebraska Water And Energy Flux Measurement, Modeling, And Research Network (Nebflux), Suat Irmak Jan 2010

Nebraska Water And Energy Flux Measurement, Modeling, And Research Network (Nebflux), Suat Irmak

Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Faculty Publications

Surface energy and water vapor fluxes play a critical role in understanding the response of agro‐ecosystems to changes in environmental and atmospheric parameters. These fluxes play a crucial role in exploring the dynamics of water and energy use efficiencies of these systems. Quantification of the fluxes is also necessary for assessing the impact of land use and management changes on water balances. Accomplishing these goals requires measurement of water vapor and energy exchanges between various vegetation surfaces and microclimates for long‐enough periods to understand the behavior and dynamics involved with the flux transfer so that robust models can be developed …

I Ceric Ammonium Nitrate-Mediated Oxidative Cleavages Of Hemiacetals Ii Synthesis Of Beta-Proline Derivatives Through The Tandem Chain Extension-Imine Capture Reaction, Alexander M. Jacobine Jan 2010

I Ceric Ammonium Nitrate-Mediated Oxidative Cleavages Of Hemiacetals Ii Synthesis Of Beta-Proline Derivatives Through The Tandem Chain Extension-Imine Capture Reaction, Alexander M. Jacobine

Doctoral Dissertations

A novel ceric ammonium nitrate-mediated oxidative cleavage of hemiacetals generated through the use of the zinc carbenoid-mediated tandem chain extension-aldol reaction was developed. This chemistry has been applied towards the formation of a class of natural products, phaseolinic acids, in two steps from a commercially available beta-keto ester, methyl 4-methoxyacetoacetate.

The tandem chain extension-imine capture reaction has also been developed to provide access to beta-proline derivatives. Two activated imines were studied and provided access to different diastereomers, making the chemistry versatile. beta-Keto esters, beta-keto amides, and beta-keto imides were subjected to the tandem chain extension-imine capture reaction conditions and proved …

Corpses Revealed: The Staging Of The Theatrical Corpse In Early Modern Drama, N M. Imbracsio Jan 2010

Corpses Revealed: The Staging Of The Theatrical Corpse In Early Modern Drama, N M. Imbracsio

Doctoral Dissertations

My dissertation examines the theatrical depiction of corpses as both stage-objects for theoretical speculation and as performance phenomena of the early modern English stage. Investigating popular drama on the London stage from 1587 -- 1683, I demonstrate that the performance of the dead body by the living actor (what I term the "theatrical corpse") is informed by early modern secular and religious polemics over the materiality of the body, the efficacy of performative behavior, and emerging theories of theatrical presence.

Previously, literary scholars have approached the performance of death on the stage using the insights of psychoanalysis or medical science, …

Competencies And Problems Of Poor And Non-Poor American Emerging Adults, Jean Dawson Jan 2010

Competencies And Problems Of Poor And Non-Poor American Emerging Adults, Jean Dawson

Doctoral Dissertations

Developmental perspectives emphasize understanding the etiology of offending across the life course and in relation to other analogous behaviors (i.e. mental illness, substance use, academic failure, social problems). Two prominent DLC theories---Moffitt's (1993) Developmental Taxonomy and Sampson and Laub's (1993) Age Graded Theory (AGT) of Informal Social Control---offer differing perspectives on the etiology of offending. Moffitt (1993) contends that four types of offenders can be identified in the general population based on various individual deficits, family problems and analogous behaviors. Sampson and Laub (1993) argue offending is a consequence of opportunities to offend and the inability of society to exert …

Adolescent Sexual Orientation And Parent-Child Relationship Quality, Rose Anne Medeiros Jan 2010

Adolescent Sexual Orientation And Parent-Child Relationship Quality, Rose Anne Medeiros

Doctoral Dissertations

The literature on gay, lesbian, and bisexual (GLB) young people commonly assumes that GLB adolescents have difficult relationships with their parents, due to their parents' difficulty accepting their sexual orientation. However, research tends to show that the family experiences of GLB individuals are diverse. The current research compared the family experiences of GLB and non-GLB college students, specifically, levels of conflict with parents during the respondent's last year of high school, parent-child relationship quality, and physical and psychological assaults by parents during the same time frame, as well as perceived social support from parents at the time of the survey. …

Experimental Evolution Of Burkholderia Cenocepacia Biofilm Populations, Steffen R. Poltak Jan 2010

Experimental Evolution Of Burkholderia Cenocepacia Biofilm Populations, Steffen R. Poltak

Doctoral Dissertations

Many biofilm populations are known for their exceptional biodiversity but the relative contributions of the forces that could promote this diversity are poorly understood. This uncertainty pervades in the well-established communities found on many natural surfaces and in long-term, chronic infections. Here we describe the parallel evolution of cooperative communities derived from a clone of Burkholderia cenocepacia during approximately 1500 generations of biofilm selection. This long-term evolution was enabled by a new experimental method that selects for daily cycles of colonization, biofilm assembly, and dispersal. Each of six replicate biofilm populations underwent a common pattern of adaptive morphological diversification, in …
