It Takes Two To Tango, And To Mediate: Legal Cultural And Other Factors Influencing United States And Latin American Lawyers’ Resistance To Mediating Commercial Disputes, Don Peters

Richmond Journal of Global Law & Business

This article examines legal cultural and other factors influencing the resistance to mediating commercial disputes displayed by U.S. and Latin American lawyers. After surveying current contexts in which commercial mediation occurs in the United States and in Latin American countries and summarizing data regarding commercial ac- tors’ knowledge of the benefits of mediating, it analyzes the relatively infrequent use of mediation despite its potential advantages over adju- dicating. Focusing on lawyers, the article next explores factors that influence U.S. and Latin American lawyers when they converse with commercial clients about selecting dispute resolution methods. Analyzing similarities arising from universal decision-making …

Comparison Of Affective Analgesia And Conditioned Place Preference Following Cholinergic Activation Of, Elena Schifirnet Jan 2010

Comparison Of Affective Analgesia And Conditioned Place Preference Following Cholinergic Activation Of, Elena Schifirnet

Wayne State University Dissertations

Activation of the dopaminergic mesolimbic reward circuitry that originates in the ventral tegmental area (VTA) is postulated to preferentially suppress affective reactions to noxious stimuli (affective analgesia, AA). VTA dopamine neurons are activated via cholinergic inputs, and we have observed that microinjections of the acetylcholine agonist carbachol suppressed vocalizations of rats that occur following administration of brief (1 sec) tail-shocks (vocalization afterdischarges = VAD). VADs are a validated rodent model of pain affect. In addition, the capacity of carbachol to support reinforcement appears to be regionally dependent within VTA. Ikemoto and Wise (2002) reported that carbachol was self-administered in the …

Physical Activity Levels In Obese And Non-Obese Women And Their Relationship With Body Mass Index, Perceived Self-Efficacy, Perceived Benefits And Barriers Of Exercise, And Commitment To A Plan Of Action, Rose Lange

Wayne State University Dissertations

The purpose of this descriptive correlational study was to examine relationships among selected variables and concepts within the Health Promotion Model (perceived benefits, perceived barriers to exercise, self-efficacy, commitment to plan of action) in non-obese and obese women with a focus on the behavioral outcome of physical activity (leisure & lifestyle). A group of 137 women, aged 18-50 participated in this study. BMI was found to be positively correlated to an individual's perceived barriers to action. Findings did not support the hypothesis that as BMI increases perceived benefits, self-efficacy, commitment to a plan of action and physical activity levels would …

Induction And Regulation Of Autophagy By Novel Prenylation Inhibitors In Sts-26t Malignant Peripheral Nerve Sheath Tumor (Mpnst) Cells, Komal Madhukar Sane Jan 2010

Induction And Regulation Of Autophagy By Novel Prenylation Inhibitors In Sts-26t Malignant Peripheral Nerve Sheath Tumor (Mpnst) Cells, Komal Madhukar Sane

Wayne State University Dissertations

Prenylation pathways have been targeted via several different compounds that inhibit farnesyl transferase (FTase) and/or geranylgeranyl transferase (GGTase) enzymes in many cellular and animal models of cancer. Some of these have also been evaluated in clinical trials with limited success. Multiple mechanisms of action have been elucidated for such compounds, including cell cycle arrest, proteasome inhibition, apoptosis and most recently, autophagy. However, there is still an urgent need of effective agents of this class of anti-tumor therapeutics. In this dissertation, I sought to delve into this issue by characterizing our novel prenylation inhibitors and their potential as anti-tumor agents. Novel …

Measurement Methods Of Electron Emission Over A Full Range Of Sample Charging, R. Hoffman, John R. Dennison Jan 2010

Measurement Methods Of Electron Emission Over A Full Range Of Sample Charging, R. Hoffman, John R. Dennison

All Physics Faculty Publications

The electron emission properties of a material subject to incident radiation flux are key parameters in determining to what equilibrium charge a spacecraft will established under given environmental conditions. However, there is a complex relation between these emission properties and the charge built up in spacecraft insulators. Complex modeling codes have been developed to predict the potential a spacecraft will adopt as a consequence of its interaction with the space plasma. These require correct models of the electron yields as a function of charge to accurately predict the both the charge build up and the equilibrium potential of spacecraft components. …

Kittens In The Oven: Race Relations, Traumatic Memory, And The Search For Identity In Julia Alvarez’S How The García Girls Lost Their Accents, Natalie Carter

The search for an ever-elusive home is a thread that runs throughout much literature by authors who have immigrated to the United States. Dominican authors are particularly susceptible to this search for a home because “for many Dominicans, home is synonymous with political and/or economic repression and is all too often a point of departure on a journey of survival” (Bonilla 200). This “journey of survival” is a direct reference to the dictatorship of Rafael Leonidas Trujillo Molina, who controlled the Dominican Republic from 1930-1961. The pain and trauma that Trujillo inflicted upon virtually everyone associated with the Dominican Republic …

Assortative mating, a potentially efficient prezygotic reproductive barrier, may prevent loss of genetic potential by avoiding the production of unfit hybrids (i.e., because of hybrid infertility or hybrid breakdown) that occur at regions of secondary contact between incipient species. In the case of the mouse hybrid zone, where two subspecies of Mus musculus (M. m. domesticus and M. m. musculus) meet and exchange genes to a limited extent, assortative mating requires a means of subspecies recognition. We based the work reported here on the hypothesis that, if there is a pheromone sufficiently diverged between M. m. domesticus and …

Mechanisms, Causes, And The Layered Model Of The World, Stuart Glennan Jan 2010

Mechanisms, Causes, And The Layered Model Of The World, Stuart Glennan

Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS

Most philosophical accounts of causation take causal relations to obtain between individuals and events in virtue of nomological relations between properties of these individuals and events. Such views fail to take into account the consequences of the fact that in general the properties of individuals and events will depend upon mechanisms that realize those properties. In this paper I attempt to rectify this failure, and in so doing to provide an account of the causal relevance of higher-level properties. I do this by critiquing one prominent model of higher-level properties – Kim’s functional model of reduction – and contrasting it …

Aristotle On Pure And Simple Stuff, Tiberiu Popa Jan 2010

Aristotle On Pure And Simple Stuff, Tiberiu Popa

Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS

A view that has been entertained traditionally by Aristotelian scholars is that the four simple bodies in the sublunary world (earth, water, air, and fire) cannot exist independently; a consequence of this view is the general belief that all homoeomers or uniform bodies have to be compounds. i would like to suggest that, while Aristotle consistently maintains that the four basic opposites (hot, cold, moist, dry) cannot exist independently, this is not always the case with the four simple bodies. My central claim is that Meteorology IV – Aristotle’s ‘chemical treatise’ – provides evidence that, contrary to the traditional interpretation …

Background: It has been shown that molecular interactions between site-specific chemical modifications such as acetylation and methylation on DNA-packing histones and conserved structural modules present in transcriptional proteins are closely associated with chromatin structural changes and gene activation. Unlike methyl-lysine that can interact with different protein modules including chromodomains, Tudor and MBT domains, as well as PHD fingers, acetyl-lysine (Kac) is known thus far to be recognized only by bromodomains. While histone lysine acetylation plays a crucial role in regulation of chromatin-mediated gene transcription, a high degree of sequence variation of the acetyl-lysine binding site in the bromodomains has …

Comparative Evaluation Of Clinical Samples From Naturally Infected Dogs For Early Detection Of Canine Distemper Virus, Muhammad Zubair Shabbir, Masood Rabbani, Arfan Ahmad, Ali̇ Ahmed, Khushi Muhammad, Ikram Anwar

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

Early detection of canine distemper (CD) is critical for appropriate and timely treatment. The present study included 45 suspected cases with respiratory signs for a comparative evaluation of clinical samples in the early detection of canine distemper virus (CDV). Thirty-four dogs exhibited digestive system involvement, but none showed any neurological symptoms. Clinical progression of CD, based on age, sex, vaccination status, disease, and clinical findings, was observed. Reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) was used to detect viral nucleoprotein RNA in plasma, conjunctival and nasal swabs. Only 10 dogs were positive for CDV infection. Among the 45 dogs, CDV RNA …

Prediction Of Prion Protein Genotype And Association Of This Genotype With Lamb Performance Traits Of Suffolk Sheep, R. M. Sawalha, Beatrize Villanueva, S. Brotherstone, P. L. Rogers, R. M. Lewis

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

The association of the prion protein (PrP) gene with susceptibility to scrapie has formed the basis of selection programs aimed at eradicating the disease from sheep populations. Animals are genotyped for the PrP gene and those with the less susceptible genotypes are selected. The objectives of this study were to determine the effectiveness of predicting PrP genotypes by using information from relatives and to investigate the association of the PrP genotype with lamb performance traits in Suffolk sheep. Data were obtained from a scrapie-affected flock maintained in Scotland. A total of 643 were animals genotyped at codon 171 of the …

Environmental And Endogenous Factors Influencing Emigration In Juvenile Anadromous Alewives, Benjamin I. Gahagan, Eric T. Schultz, Katie E. Gherard Jan 2010

Environmental And Endogenous Factors Influencing Emigration In Juvenile Anadromous Alewives, Benjamin I. Gahagan, Eric T. Schultz, Katie E. Gherard

EEB Articles

We analyzed juvenile anadromous alewife migration at Bride Lake, a coastal lake in Connecticut, during summer 2006 and found that migration on 24-hour and seasonal timescales was influenced by conditions of the environment and characteristics of the individual. To identify environmental cues of juvenile migration, we continuously video recorded fish at the lake outflow and employed information-theoretic model selection to identify the best predictors of daily migration rate. More than 80% of the approximately 320,000 juveniles that migrated from mid-June to mid-August departed in three pulses lasting one or two days. Pulses of migration were associated with precipitation events, transient …

Targeted Reform Of Commercialized Intercollegiate Athletics, Matthew J. Mitten, James L. Musselman, Bruce W. Burton Jan 2010

Targeted Reform Of Commercialized Intercollegiate Athletics, Matthew J. Mitten, James L. Musselman, Bruce W. Burton

Faculty Publications

This Article observes that American society’s passion for intercollegiate sports competition is an extremely powerful, naturally evolved cultural force. The marketplace responds to cultural forces, and the commercialization of college sports directly reflects the marketplace realities of our society. For example, colleges and universities rationally utilize their intercollegiate athletic programs, particularly NCAA Division 1 FBS football and basketball, as a means to achieve a wide range of legitimate objectives of higher education. Thus, the authors advocate that university athletic department revenues should continue to be exempt from federal taxation, specifically the unrelated business income tax (UBIT), despite the increasingly commercialized …
