Implications Of The Copenhagen Accord For Global Climate Governance, David Hunter Jan 2010

Implications Of The Copenhagen Accord For Global Climate Governance, David Hunter

PEEL Faculty Scholarship

Climate advocates are increasingly raising specific climate change concerns before domestic courts, human rights tribunals, international commissions and other national and international decisionmaking bodies. Win or lose, these litigation strategies are significantly changing and enhancing the public dialogue around climate change. This article discusses the awareness-building impacts of climate litigation as well as related impacts such strategies may have on the development of climate law and policy. The article argues that litigation's focus on specific victims facing immediate threats from climate change has increased the political will to address climate change both internationally and nationally. It has also shifted the …

High School Bridge Program: A Multidisciplinary Stem Research Program, Jiang Zhe, Dennis Doverspike, Julie Zhao, Paul C. Lam, Craig C. Menzemer

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Research

A Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) summer Bridge Program was developed for high school students. The program was designed to encourage students to consider choosing an engineering major in college and to explore STEM as a future career. This was accomplished through a 10-week program involving multidisciplinary research activities. The participants in the program included 33 high school students. Among former participants in position to make a choice in terms of attending college, 100% had chosen to continue on in college, and 86% had chosen to major in a STEM area. The results indicated that that the program had …

Renorming Labour Law: Can We Escape Labour Law's Recurring Regulatory Dilemmas?, Eric Tucker Jan 2010

Renorming Labour Law: Can We Escape Labour Law's Recurring Regulatory Dilemmas?, Eric Tucker

Articles & Book Chapters

Historically, protective labour law pushed back against capitalist labour markets by facilitating workers’ collective action and setting minimum employment standards based on social norms. Although the possibilities, limits and desirability of such a project were viewed differently in classical, Marxist and pluralist political economy, each perspective understood that the pursuit of protective labour law would produce recurring regulatory dilemmas requiring trade-offs between efficiency, equity and voice and/or between workers’ and employers’ interests. Recently, some scholars have argued that labour law needs to be renormed in ways that are market constituting rather than market constraining, and that this change would avoid …

The Vascular Flora Of Greater San Quintín, Baja California, Mexico, Sula E. Vanderplank

CGU Theses & Dissertations

The plants of San Quintín (Baja California, Mexico) were documented through intensive fieldwork and the collection of herbarium specimens to create a checklist of species. This region is home to a diverse flora with high levels of local endemism and many rare plants. The flora documented in this study was compared to historical records from the region and shows the impact of agriculture and urbanization on the plants, including several extirpated species. A study of the perennial vegetation using a 1 km grid provides species distribution data for 140 native species, which were assessed to highlight areas of significant species …

Wastewater Disposal Practices And Change In Development In The Barton Springs Zone, Chris Herrington, Matthew Menchaca, Mattthew Westbrook

KIP Articles

County tax appraisal district records and regional population projections are used as surrogates to track historical and future development in the Barton Springs Zone of the Edwards Aquifer. Wastewater disposal by either Texas Land Application Permit (TLAP) and by individual on-site sewage facility (OSSF) are identified spatially and temporally. There are 27 active TLAP permits in the Barton Springs Zone and as of 2010 there is 3.8 million gallons per day of permitted wastewater irrigation volume. There are at least 9,470 OSSF permits in the Barton Springs Zone, with the highest density of permits observed in the Bear Creek watershed. …

Prospective Parents And The Children's Rights Convention, Carter Dillard Jan 2010

Prospective Parents And The Children's Rights Convention, Carter Dillard

American University International Law Review

This Article addresses the novel question of whether states parties can successfully implement the Children’s Rights Convention by placing legal obligations on prospective parents, thereby influencing not just a child’s environment, but also the procreation of that child. First, the Article takes a unique version of the child-centered perspective, one that recognizes that as we move back in time in the direction of and even before a child’s birth, our obligations to the child grow because our actions become ever more influential. The perspective also takes into account current moral theories of parental obligation to prospective children. The Article then …

Use Of Optical Tweezers To Probe Epithelial Mechanosensation, Andrew Resnick Jan 2010

Use Of Optical Tweezers To Probe Epithelial Mechanosensation, Andrew Resnick

Physics Faculty Publications

Cellular mechanosensation mechanisms have been implicated in a variety of disease states. Specifically in renal tubules, the primary cilium and associated mechanosensitive ion channels are hypothesized to play a role in water and salt homeostasis, with relevant disease states including polycystic kidney disease and hypertension. Previous experiments investigating ciliary-mediated cellular mechanosensation have used either fluid flow chambers or micropipetting to elicit a biological response. The interpretation of these experiments in terms of the "ciliary hypothesis" has been difficult due the spatially distributed nature of the mechanical disturbance-several competing hypotheses regarding possible roles of primary cilium, glycocalyx, microvilli, cell junctions, and …

The Influence Of Culture Medium And Light Cycle On The Productivity Of The Green Algae Neochloris Oleoabundans, Candace Clark Jan 2010

The Influence Of Culture Medium And Light Cycle On The Productivity Of The Green Algae Neochloris Oleoabundans, Candace Clark

Browse All Undergraduate research

Biofuels from algae are a promising source of alternative energy. One algae species, Neochloris oleoabundans, shows potential for successful biodiesel production, where biodiesel is produced from the neutral lipid content of the algae. Algal neutral lipid content may be influenced and increased by changes in the surrounding environment. One possible way to influence lipid synthesis is through the growth medium. Two published growth mediums were compared using photobioreactors. Two experimental runs were performed with each medium: 1) continuous light and 2) 12 hour on, 12 hour off light cycle. In addition to medium composition, the effect of light cycle on …

Facing The Music Or Burying Our Heads In The Sand?: Adaptive Emotion Regulation In Mid- And Late-Life, Robert J. Waldinger, Marc S. Schulz Jan 2010

Facing The Music Or Burying Our Heads In The Sand?: Adaptive Emotion Regulation In Mid- And Late-Life, Robert J. Waldinger, Marc S. Schulz

Psychology Faculty Research and Scholarship

Psychological defense theories postulate that keeping threatening information out of awareness brings short-term reduction of anxiety at the cost of longer-term dysfunction. By contrast, Socioemotional Selectivity Theory suggests that preference for positively-valenced information is a manifestation of adaptive emotion regulation in later life. Using six decades of longitudinal data on 61 men, we examined links between emotion regulation indices informed by these distinct conceptualizations: defense patterns in earlier adulthood and selective memory for positively-valenced images in late life. Men who used more avoidant defenses in midlife recognized fewer emotionally-valenced and neutral images in a memory test 35-40 years later. Late-life …

Prevention With Positives: How Do We Reach Them In The Community?, Avina Sarna, Jerry Okal, Stanley Luchters, Nzioki King'ola, Scott Geibel

HIV and AIDS

In the past, HIV prevention efforts have focused primarily on developing risk-reduction interventions for those presumed to be HIV-negative and therefore at risk of becoming infected with HIV. In recognition of the need for prevention among people living with HIV (PLHIV), programs have been initiated in Africa, but primarily in clinical settings for those who are on antiretroviral therapy (ART). There is little knowledge about how to reach those PLHIV not on ART, and therefore not in regular contact with the health system or with effective prevention messages. This diagnostic study aimed to address the gap in information on how …
