The article presents the author's views on the inaugural issue of the journal. He states that the journal is aimed at building a shared vision in the society. He believes that one of the reasons for the society's inability to make progress is because of the academia, media, law and politics cast complex problems as polar opposites, which is known as argument culture that the journal aims to resolve.

Coastal wetland plants are expected to respond to global sea level rise by migrating toward higher elevations. Housing, infrastructure, and other anthropogenic modifications are expected to limit the space available for this potential migration. Here, we explore the ecological and economic effects of projected Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) 2007 report sea level changes at the plant community scale using the highest horizontal (1 m) and vertical (0.01 m) resolution data available, using a 6 x 6 km area as an example. Our findings show that salt marshes do not always lose land with increasing rates of sea level …

Evaluation Of Five Methods For Total Dna Extraction From Western Corn Rootworm Beetles, Hong Chen, Murugesan Rangasamy, Sek Yee Tan, Haichuan Wang, Blair D. Siegfried
Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications
Background: DNA extraction is a routine step in many insect molecular studies. A variety of methods have been used to isolate DNA molecules from insects, and many commercial kits are available. Extraction methods need to be evaluated for their efficiency, cost, and side effects such as DNA degradation during extraction.
Methodology/Principal Findings: From individual western corn rootworm beetles, Diabrotica virgifera virgifera, DNA extractions by the SDS method, CTAB method, DNAzol reagent, Puregene solutions and DNeasy column were compared in terms of DNA quantity and quality, cost of materials, and time consumed. Although all five methods resulted in acceptable DNA …

Hybridization Of Invasive Phragmites Australis With A Native Subspecies In North America, Laura A. Meyerson, David V. Viola, Rebecca N. Brown
Natural Resources Science Faculty Publications
Interspecific hybridization can lead to the extinction of native populations and increased aggressiveness in hybrid forms relative to their parental lineages. However, interbreeding among subspecies is less often recognized as a serious threat to native species. Phragmites australis offers an excellent opportunity to investigate intraspecific hybridization since both native and introduced lineages occur in North America. Introduced Phragmites is a highly successful estuarine plant invader throughout North America, but native Phragmites populations are declining in the eastern US. Despite range overlaps, hybridization has not yet been detected between the native and introduced lineages in the wild, suggesting that phenological or …

A Review Of Rape Statistics, Theories, And Policy, Gary Lowell
A Review Of Rape Statistics, Theories, And Policy, Gary Lowell
Undergraduate Review
Rape is defined in the laws of Massachusetts as “[s]exual intercourse or unnatural sexual intercourse by a person with another person who is compelled to submit by force and against his will or by threat of bodily injury” (Mass. Gen. Laws Ann. ch. 277, § 39, 2009). Although traditional definitions of rape have been that only a female can be raped and only a male can rape, “courts have held that the rape statutes in their jurisdictions are gender-neutral and apply equally to perpetrators of either sex” (Lynton, 1995). Still, since male on female rape is more prevalent (see Gonzales, …

Social Information Processing: The Effect Of Affective Ties On Children's Social Goals, Amanda C. Drake
Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects
Previous studies have shown that children’s goals are influenced by emotion and that emotions can be manipulated using relationships. The present study combines these previous findings by examining the effect of children’s relationships on social goals. Social goals were examined in second and fifth grade children using hypothetical ambiguous provocation situations in which the relationship between the participant and the provocateur was manipulated by inserting the name of a friend, enemy, or a neutral peer into the story. After each situation, children rated the importance of four different social goals, indicating which of the four would be the most important …

Voluntary Exercise In Phosphorylase Kinase Deficient Mice, Ashley M. Mefford
Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects
Phosphorylase kinase (PhK), a key regulator of glycogenolysis, is critical for maintaining blood glucose levels thus providing energy to sustain muscle contraction. A deficiency of PhK in skeletal muscle is the cause of one type of glycogen storage disease (GSD) in humans. This study investigates the physiological and genetic adaptations that occur in a mouse model of GSD, I/LnJ mice, in response to voluntary exercise. Juvenile (6-8 weeks old) and adult (12-14 weeks old) I/LnJ and wild-type C57/Bl6 mice exercised voluntarily for 1, 2 or 5 weeks. Exercise data was calculated as mean daily running time, daily running distance, total …

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects
Couches. Creativity. Teachers. Thinkers. Call it the Hippie School. Or call it the Brown School – a self-directed learning magnet school in downtown Louisville, Kentucky. Since 1972, the J. Graham Brown School has educated children from elementary through high school beyond the traditional education model to face the world with a different perspective from the norm: one of acceptance, of the individual, of the cohesion of our differences. Students mentor each other and form open, real relationships with teachers to develop a unique, whole understanding of the world – all the while trying to shed the image of a school …

Rehabilitate Failing Park Sewage System Environmental Assessment, United States Department Of The Interior, National Park Service
Environmental Assessments (UT)
The National Park Service (NPS) proposes to rehabilitate the failing sewage system within Bryce Canyon National Park, Utah. The rehabilitation would provide a safe, healthy, and functional environment, and maintain public health and future service for park visitors and staff. Portions of the sanitary sewage collection system were originally constructed in 1958 of clay pipe and currently service the lodge, staff housing, and visitor center before feeding into sewage treatment lagoons. Sections of the sewage system have deteriorated significantly with age. These sections of the system and appurtenant manholes are deteriorating into pieces that regularly clog the system and cause …

The Resource Description Framework (RDF) format is being used by a large number of scientific applications to store and disseminate their datasets. The provenance information, describing the source or lineage of the datasets, is playing an increasingly significant role in ensuring data quality, computing trust value of the datasets, and ranking query results. Current provenance tracking approaches using the RDF reification vocabulary suffer from a number of known issues, including lack of formal semantics, use of blank nodes, and application-dependent interpretation of reified RDF triples. In this paper, we introduce a new approach called Provenance Context Entity (PaCE) that uses …

Applying Cloud computing techniques for analyzing large data sets has shown promise in many data-driven scientific applications. Our approach presented here is to use Cloud computing for Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR)data analysis which normally consists of large amounts of data. Biologists often use third party or commercial software for ease of use. Enabling the capability to use this kind of software in a Cloud will be highly advantageous in many ways. Scripting languages especially designed for clouds may not have the flexibility biologists need for their purposes. Although this is true, they are familiar with special software packages that allow …

Department of Communication Studies: Faculty Publications
This study explored how participants discursively rendered voluntary kin relationships sensical and legitimate. Interpretive analyses of 110 interviews revealed four main types of voluntary kin: (i) substitute family, (ii) supplemental family, (iii) convenience family, and (iv) extended family. These types were rendered sensical and legitimated by drawing on the discourse of the traditional family. Except for the extended family, three of four voluntary kin family types were justified by an attributed deficit in the blood and legal family. Because voluntary kin relationships are not based on the traditional criteria of association by blood or law, members experience them as potentially …
Negotiating Cultural Identities Through Language: Academic English In Jordan, Anne-Marie Pedersen
Negotiating Cultural Identities Through Language: Academic English In Jordan, Anne-Marie Pedersen
English Faculty Articles and Research
This article discusses how a group of multilingual scholars in Jordan negotiate multiple linguistic and cultural affiliations. These writers' experiences demonstrate the varied ways English's global dominance affects individuals' lives. The scholars find both empowerment and disempowerment in English, viewing English as linked to Western hegemony in some situations and as de-nationalized and de-territorialized in others.

Employees, Firm Size And Profitability Of U.S. Manufacturing Industries, John R. Becker-Blease, Fred R. Kaen, Ahmad Etebari, Hans Baumann
Accounting & Finance
We examine the relation between firm size and profitability within 109 SIC four-digit manufacturing industries. Depending on our measure of profitability, we find that profitability increases at a decreasing rate and eventually declines in up to 47 of our industries. No relation between profitability and size is found in up to 52 of our industries. These two categories account for 97 of our 109 industries. Profitability continues to increase as firms become larger in up to 11 industries. Hence, the relation between size and profitability is industry specific. But, regardless of the shape of the size profitability function, we find …

Kaempferol Enhances Cisplatin's Effect On Ovarian Cancer Cells Through Promoting Apoptosis Caused By Down Regulation Of Cmyc, Haitao Luo, Matthew K. Daddysman, Gary O. Rankin, Bing-Hua Jiang, Yi C. Chen
Faculty & Staff Scholarship
Background
Ovarian cancer is one of the most significant malignancies in the western world. Studies showed that Ovarian cancers tend to grow resistance to cisplatin treatment. Therefore, new approaches are needed in ovarian cancer treatment. Kaempferol is a dietary flavonoid that is widely distributed in fruits and vegetables, and epidemiology studies have revealed a protective effect of kaempferol against ovarian cancer risk. Our early studies also found that kaempferol is effective in reducing vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) expression in ovarian cancer cells. In this study, we investigated kaempferol's effects on sensitizing ovarian cancer cell growth in response to cisplatin …

Teaching Physical Science By Inquiry, Ben Kalainoff
Teaching Physical Science By Inquiry, Ben Kalainoff
Graduate Research Papers
Currently in science education, there is a push to get away from the traditional methods and teach science in a more student centered way through the use of inquiry. Teaching in a student centered way is not a new idea, but rather one that has been around at least the last 200 years, and probably much longer. The current student centered push to include inquiry is supported by the National Science Education Standards (National Academy of Sciences - National Research Council, 2000). Even with the direction given by the National Standards, the teachers need to effectively implement inquiry in their …
