On The Variability Of Gulf Stream Transport From Seasonal To Decadal Timescales, T. Rossby, C. Flagg, K. Donohue Jan 2010

On The Variability Of Gulf Stream Transport From Seasonal To Decadal Timescales, T. Rossby, C. Flagg, K. Donohue

Journal of Marine Research

Given the Gulf Stream's central role in the North Atlantic's wind-driven and meridional overturning circulation (MOC), there is considerable interest in measuring mass and heat flux to sufficient accuracy that their variability can be quantified with some degree of confidence. Here we combine high-resolution direct measurements of upper ocean transport from the last 17 years of Oleander ADCP data with previously published estimates of baroclinic transport to examine Gulf Stream transport variability over the last 80 years just downstream of where the current separates from the U.S. east coast.By far the greatest source of variability occurs on short time scales …

When And Why Does Bioturbation Lead To Diffusive Mixing?, Filip J. R. Meysman, Bernard P. Boudreau, Jack J. Middelburg

Journal of Marine Research

Bioturbation in aquatic sediments results from many different biological activities, inducing particle displacement over a variety of length and time scales. Despite this inherent complexity, empirical tracer studies show that bioturbational mixing is often well described by a simple diffusive model. To resolve this apparent contradiction between biological complexity and modeling simplicity, we present an investigation into the diffusive nature of bioturbation. To this end, we examine a stochastic description of bioturbation, where particle mixing is described as a sequence of random bioturbation events. Particle movement is governed by three basic variables: the direction of jumping, the jumping distance, and …

Expression, Purification, Crystallization And Preliminary X-Ray Analysis Of Pseudomonas Aeuginosa Algx, Joel T. Weadge, Patrick P. Yip, Howard Robinson, Krista Arnett, Peter A. Tipton, P. Lynne Howell

Biology Faculty Publications

AlgX is a periplasmic protein required for the production of the exopolysaccharide alginate in Pseudomonas sp. and Azotobacter vinelandii. AlgX has been overexpressed and purified and diffraction-quality crystals have been grown using iterative seeding and the hanging-drop vapor-diffusion method. The crystals grew as flat plates with unit-cell parameters a=46.4, b=120.6, c=86.9Å, β=95.7°. The cyrstals exhibited the symmetry of space group P21 and diffracted to a minimimum d-spacing of 2.1Å. On the basis of the Matthews coefficient (VM=2.25Å3 Da-1), two molecules were estimated to be present in the …

Race Treason: The Untold Story Of America's Ban On Polygamy, Martha M. Ertman Jan 2010

Race Treason: The Untold Story Of America's Ban On Polygamy, Martha M. Ertman

Faculty Scholarship

Legal doctrines banning polygamy grew out of nineteenth century Americans’ view that Mormons betrayed the nation by engaging in conduct associated with people of color. This article reveals the racial underpinnings of polygamy law by examining cartoons and other antipolygamy rhetoric of the time to demonstrate Sir Henry Maine’s famous observation that the move in progressive societies is “from status to contract.” It frames antipolygamists’ contentions as a visceral defense of racial and sexual status in the face of encroaching contractual thinking. Polygamy, they reasoned, was “natural” for people of color but so “unnatural” for whites as to produce a …

Fact Or Fiction: The Legal Construction Of Immigration Removal For Crimes, Maureen A. Sweeney Jan 2010

Fact Or Fiction: The Legal Construction Of Immigration Removal For Crimes, Maureen A. Sweeney

Faculty Scholarship

Thousands of long-term legal permanent residents are deported from the United States each year because they have been convicted of criminal offenses, many quite minor. These deportations occur without any of the constitutional safeguards that generally protect criminal defendants. Immigration authorities rely on cases asserting that such deportations are not punishment for the crime, but merely collateral consequences of the conviction. This article challenges that reasoning. It argues that its factual and doctrinal foundation has completely disintegrated over the last 20 years. Far-reaching changes in immigration law and enforcement have rendered deportation for aggravated felonies a “definite, immediate and largely …

The Posse Comitatus Act And Disaster Response, Michael Greenberger, Arianne Spaccarelli Jan 2010

The Posse Comitatus Act And Disaster Response, Michael Greenberger, Arianne Spaccarelli

Faculty Scholarship

The federal government’s failure to quickly send active duty troops and other military assets to Louisiana in the wake of Hurricane Katrina primarily stems from its narrow interpretation of the Posse Comitatus Act (PCA), which generally bars the use of federal troops for domestic law enforcement. As this chapter explains, the complete breakdown of law and order during a catastrophic emergency such as Hurricane Katrina allows the president to unilaterally deploy federal troops. This authority to deploy federal troops in response to certain natural disasters, in accordance with the PCA and the Constitution, is found in the Insurrection Act, Stafford …

Cognition-Enhancing Drugs: Can We Say No?, Frank Pasquale Jan 2010

Cognition-Enhancing Drugs: Can We Say No?, Frank Pasquale

Faculty Scholarship

Normative analysis of cognition-enhancing drugs frequently weighs the liberty interests of drug users against egalitarian commitments to a "level playing field." Yet those who would refuse to engage in neuroenhancement may well find their liberty to do so limited in a society where such drugs are widespread. To the extent that unvarnished emotional responses are world-disclosive, neurocosmetic practices also threaten to provide a form of faulty data to their users. This essay examines underappreciated liberty-based and epistemic rationales for regulating cognition-enhancing drugs.

The Internet Is A Semicommons, James Grimmelmann Jan 2010

The Internet Is A Semicommons, James Grimmelmann

Faculty Scholarship

The Internet is a semicommons. Private property in servers and network links coexists with a shared communications platform. This distinctive combination both explains the Internet's enormous success and illustrates some of its recurring problems.

Building on Henry Smith's theory of the semicommons in the medieval open-field system, this essay explains how the dynamic interplay between private and common uses on the Internet enables it to facilitate worldwide sharing and collaboration without collapsing under the strain of misuse. It shows that key technical features of the Internet, such as its layering of protocols and the Web's division into distinct "sites," respond …

Preliminary Phylogeny Of The Thrips Parasitoids Of Turkey Based On Some Morphological Scales And 28s D2 Rdna, With Description Of A New Species, Oguzhan Doğanlar, Mi̇kdat Doğanlar, Anne Frary

Turkish Journal of Zoology

Species of the Ceranisus thrips-attacking genus are difficult to distinguish morphologically. The phylogenetic relationships within the Ceranisus species were explored using nucleotide sequences of the 28S D2 expansion region of the rDNA gene. Bayesian, maximum likelihood, and parsimony inference methods were employed to construct the phylogenetic relationships. Principal component analysis on the Turkish species of Ceranisus, namely antalyacus, menes, bozovaensis, hirsutus, planitianus (a new record for Turkey), pacuvius, and a new species, provided supporting evidence. All known data concerning hosts and geographical distribution are presented. A new species, C. onuri O. Doganlar, sp.n., was described from Turkey.

The Effect Of Caloric Restriction On The Population Density Of Freshwater Rotifers (Brachionus Calyciflorus), Ni̇lgün Özdemi̇r, Abdulkadi̇r Çi̇ltaş

Turkish Journal of Zoology

The effects of caloric restriction (CR) on the population density of freshwater rotifers (Brachionus calyciflorus) were investigated in the present study. During experiments with different CRs, groups of rotifers were fed with Chlorella sp. at the same concentrations of 1.5 × 10^6 cells/mL at 12, 24, 36, 48, 60, and 72 h intervals for 20 days. Significant changes were observed both in the population density and the peak days in groups subjected to different CRs (P < 0.01). The highest peak in population density was obtained on the fifth day for rotifers fed in 12 h intervals (269 ± 40.12 individuals/mL, mean ± SD). The rate of population increase (r) varied from 0.608 ± 0.073 to 0.288 ± 0.053, depending on the feeding intervals. The results show that CR affected the population density of B. calyciflorus.
