Optimal Use Of Blood In Trauma Patients, Philip C. Spinella Jan 2010

Optimal Use Of Blood In Trauma Patients, Philip C. Spinella

Articles - Patient Care

Injury is rapidly becoming the leading cause of death worldwide, and uncontrolled hemorrhage is the leading cause of potentially preventable death. In addition to crystalloid and/or colloid based resuscitation, severely injured trauma patients are routinely transfused RBCs, plasma, platelets, and in some centers either cryoprecipitate or fibrinogen concentrates or whole blood. Optimal timing and quantity of these products in the treatment of hypothermic, coagulopathic and acidotic trauma patients is unclear. The immediate availability of these components is important, as most hemorrhagic deaths occur within the first 3–6 h of patient arrival. While there are strongly held opinions and longstanding traditions …

The Perceived Prognosis Of Endodontic Treatment And Implant Therapy Among Dental Practitioners, Rachel Margaret Stockhausen Jan 2010

The Perceived Prognosis Of Endodontic Treatment And Implant Therapy Among Dental Practitioners, Rachel Margaret Stockhausen

SoDM Masters Theses

Little data concerning the perceived success of implant therapy in comparison with endodontic treatment exists. While the criteria used to measure the outcome of each modality are not the same, it is not clear if this is appreciated by practicing dentists. The purpose of the study was to evaluate the perceived outcome of implant therapy in comparison to endodontic treatment. A 23 question Web-based survey was distributed to 648 dentists who matriculated from the University of Connecticut School Of Dental Medicine over the past 30 years. The response rate was 47%. Sixty-seven percent of respondents were general dentists. Forty-nine percent …

Effects Of Externally Applied, Cyclical, Low Magnitude Forces On Orthodontic Tooth Movement In Rats, Elizabeth Clair Blake Jan 2010

Effects Of Externally Applied, Cyclical, Low Magnitude Forces On Orthodontic Tooth Movement In Rats, Elizabeth Clair Blake

SoDM Masters Theses

Orthodontic tooth movement requires external orthodontic forces to be converted to cellular signals that result in the coordinated removal of bone on one side of the tooth (compression side) by osteoclasts, and the formation of new bone by osteoblasts on the other side (tension side). The length of orthodontic treatment can take several years, leading to problems of caries, periodontal disease, root resorption, and patient dissatisfaction. It appears that the velocity of tooth movement is largely dependent on the rate of alveolar bone remodeling. Pharmacological approaches to increase the rate of tooth movement are limited due to patient discomfort, severe …

Age Related Changes In Craniofacial Morphology In Gdf-8 (Myostatin) Deficient Mice, Jeffrey Miller Jan 2010

Age Related Changes In Craniofacial Morphology In Gdf-8 (Myostatin) Deficient Mice, Jeffrey Miller

SoDM Articles

It is well recognized that masticatory muscle function helps determine morphology, although the extent of function on final form is still debated. GDF-8 (myostatin), a transcription factor is a negative regulator of skeletal muscle growth. A recent study has shown that mice homozygous for the myostatin mutation had increased muscle mass and craniofacial dysmorphology in adulthood. However, it is unclear whether such dysmorphology is present at birth. This study examines the onset and relationship between hypermuscularity and craniofacial morphology in neonatal and adult mice with GDF-8 deficiency.

Fifteen (8 wild-type and 7 GDF-8 −/−), 1 day old and 16 (9 …

Memory Cd8+ T Cell Differentiation, Joshua J. Obar, Leo Lefrancois Jan 2010

Memory Cd8+ T Cell Differentiation, Joshua J. Obar, Leo Lefrancois

UCHC Articles - Research

In response to infection or effective vaccination, naive antigen-specific CD8+ T cells undergo a dramatic highly orchestrated activation process. Initial encounter with an appropriately activated antigen-presenting cell leads to blastogenesis and an exponential increase in antigen-specific CD8+ T cell numbers. Simultaneously, a dynamic differentiation process occurs, resulting in formation of both primary effector and long-lived memory cells. Current findings have emphasized the heterogeneity of effector and memory cell populations with the description of multiple cellular subsets based on phenotype, function, and anatomic location. Yet, only recently have we begun to dissect the underlying factors mediating the temporal control of the …

Stroke In Women: Disparities And Outcomes, Rebecca W. Persky, Lisa Christine Turtzo, Louise D. Mccullough Jan 2010

Stroke In Women: Disparities And Outcomes, Rebecca W. Persky, Lisa Christine Turtzo, Louise D. Mccullough

UCHC Articles - Research

Stroke is the leading cause of disability in the United States and affects 15 million people worldwide. Studies performed in various parts of the world have found differences between sexes in stroke incidence, prevalence, mortality, and outcomes. Although men are at higher risk of stroke for most age groups below age 85 years, after this age the incidence reverses dramatically, with women being much more at risk. Furthermore, recent studies suggest that women have worse recovery than men post-stroke. Many aspects of recovery may influence this outcome, including sex-specific comorbidities, aggressiveness of acute treat-ment, prevention therapies, and varying degrees of …

Nonlinear Oscillations In Pain Prediction Accuracy: A Dynamical Systems Approach To Understanding Daily Pain Prediction, Howard A. Tennen Jan 2010

Nonlinear Oscillations In Pain Prediction Accuracy: A Dynamical Systems Approach To Understanding Daily Pain Prediction, Howard A. Tennen

UCHC Articles - Research

Dynamical systems modeling was used to analyze fluctuations in the pain prediction process of people with rheumatoid arthritis. 170 people diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis completed 29 consecutive days of diaries. Difference scores between pain predictions and next-day pain experience ratings provided a time series of pain prediction accuracy. Pain prediction accuracy oscillated over time. The oscillation amplitude was larger at the start of the diary than at the end, which indicates damping toward more accurate predictions. State-level psychological characteristics moderated the damping pattern such that the oscillations for patients with lower negative affect and higher pain control damped more quickly …

Objective To examine associations between haplotypes of the serotonin 1B receptor gene and individual differences in anger and hostility. Methods Data were analyzed from a study of 361 university students (47% male). Participants were genotyped at 5 polymorphisms in the HTR1B gene (rs11568817, rs130058, rs6296, rs6297, rs13212041), including promoter and 3′UTR polymorphisms with opposite functional effects on gene expression. Participants reported their emotional states across 30 consecutive days for up to four years. Haplotype pairs were constructed statistically and assigned to a level of HTR1B expression based on the presence of the functional polymorphisms. Results Six haplotypes accounted for >97% …

Use Of Virtual Cell In Studies Of Cellular Dynamics, Leslie M. Loew, Boris M. Slepchenko Jan 2010

Use Of Virtual Cell In Studies Of Cellular Dynamics, Leslie M. Loew, Boris M. Slepchenko

UCHC Articles - Research

The Virtual Cell (VCell) is a unique computational environment for modeling and simulation of cell biology. It has been specifically designed to be a tool for a wide range of scientists, from experimental cell biologists to theoretical biophysicists. The models created with VCell can range from the simple, to evaluate hypotheses or to interpret experimental data, to complex multi-layered models used to probe the predicted behavior of spatially resolved, highly non-linear systems. In this Chapter, we discuss modeling capabilities of VCell and demonstrate representative examples of the models published by the Virtual Cell users.

Expansion Of The Eukaryotic Proteome By Alternative Splicing, Brenton R. Graveley Jan 2010

Expansion Of The Eukaryotic Proteome By Alternative Splicing, Brenton R. Graveley

UCHC Articles - Research

The collection of components required to carry out the intricate processes involved in generating and maintaining a living, breathing and, sometimes, thinking organism is staggeringly complex. Where do all of the parts come from? Early estimates stated that about 100,000 genes would be required to make up a mammal; however, the actual number is less than one-quarter of that, barely four times the number of genes in budding yeast. It is now clear that the ‘missing’ information is in large part provided by alternative splicing, the process by which multiple different functional messenger RNAs, and therefore proteins, can be synthesized …

The Stories Of Marriage, Katharine K. Baker Jan 2010

The Stories Of Marriage, Katharine K. Baker

All Faculty Scholarship

The gay and lesbian community's response to California's Proposition 8 was strong and quick. Within days of the 2008 election, opponents of the measure had targeted its proponents, in particular the Mormon Church, as subjects for scorn. Singling out the Mormon Church on this issue was particularly ironic because to the extent that members of the Mormon Church were responsible for the success of Proposition 8, they simply did to the gay community what courts of the United States consistently did to their forebears: defined away their right to marry. In striking down individuals' rights to enter into polygamous marriages, …

Marriage And Parenthood As Status And Rights: The Growing, Problematic And Possibly Constitutional Trend To Disaggregate Family Status From Family Rights, Katharine K. Baker Jan 2010

Marriage And Parenthood As Status And Rights: The Growing, Problematic And Possibly Constitutional Trend To Disaggregate Family Status From Family Rights, Katharine K. Baker

All Faculty Scholarship

In upholding Proposition 8 one year after finding that same sex couples had a constitutional right to marry, the California Supreme Court followed a growing trend in family law to sever family rights from family status. The Court found that same sex couples were constitutionally entitled to the legal incidents of marriage, but not marriage itself. In the last 30 years, courts and legislatures have increasingly recognized a variety of different family forms by granting people in them the legal incidents of family relationship (Civil Unions and Domestic Partnerships for couples, Visitation and De Facto Parenthood for caretakers) without granting …

Valuing Intellectual Property: An Experiment, Christopher J. Buccafusco, C. Sprigman Jan 2010

Valuing Intellectual Property: An Experiment, Christopher J. Buccafusco, C. Sprigman

All Faculty Scholarship

In this article we report on the results of an experiment we performed to determine whether transactions in intellectual property (IP) are subject to the valuation anomalies commonly referred to as “endowment effects”. Traditional conceptions of the value of IP rely on assumptions about human rationality derived from classical economics. The law assumes that when people make decisions about buying, selling, and licensing IP they do so with fixed, context-independent preferences. Over the past several decades, this rational actor model of classical economics has come under attack by behavioral data showing that people do not always make strictly rational decisions. …

A Transposon In Comt Generates Mrna Variants And Causes Widespread Expression And Behavioral Differences Among Mice, Zhengsheng Li, Megan K. Mulligan, Xusheng Wang, Michael F. Miles, Lu Lu, Robert W. Williams

Pharmacology and Toxicology Publications

Background

Catechol-O-methyltransferase (COMT) is a key enzyme responsible for the degradation of dopamine and norepinephrine. COMT activity influences cognitive and emotional states in humans and aggression and drug responses in mice. This study identifies the key sequence variant that leads to differences in Comt mRNA and protein levels among mice, and that modulates synaptic function and pharmacological and behavioral traits.

Methodology/Principal Findings

We examined Comt expression in multiple tissues in over 100 diverse strains and several genetic crosses. Differences in expression map back to Comt and are generated by a 230 nt insertion of a B2 short interspersed element (B2 …

Student Intellectual Property, John Baumwoll, Lance Woodcock Jan 2010

Student Intellectual Property, John Baumwoll, Lance Woodcock

Industrial Technology and Packaging

During the past several decades there has been an exponential growth of patents and other government granted protections given to University created intellectual property. With this rise in patents and other protections, Universities are gaining an understanding of what these mean for the University, both in notoriety and in fiscal returns.

This senior project explains and suggests methods through which students and faculty can become better informed on intellectual property and technology commercialization while obtaining an education here at California Polytechnic University, San Luis Obispo. Through review and evaluation of other Universities throughout the nation, this project will provide students …

Laboratory Evaluation Of Two Bioenergetics Models For Brown Trout, Gregory Whitledge, Przemyslaw G. Bajer, Robert S. Hayward Jan 2010

Laboratory Evaluation Of Two Bioenergetics Models For Brown Trout, Gregory Whitledge, Przemyslaw G. Bajer, Robert S. Hayward

Publications

Laboratory growth and food consumption data for two size classes of brown trout Salmo trutta that experienced three distinct feeding regimes at two temperatures were used to evaluate the abilities of two bioenergetics models to predict fish growth. Accuracy of cumulative consumption predictions was also tested for one of the models. Model errors for predicting relative growth rate of individual fish were regressed on observed mean daily consumption rate to assess whether consumption-dependent prediction error commonly observed in bioenergetics models for other fish species was exhibited by the two brown trout bioenergetics models. Both models yielded unbiased estimates of brown …

Wildfire Promotes Dominance Of Invasive Giant Reed (Arundo Donax) In Riparian Ecosystems, Gretchen Coffman, R F. Ambrose, P W. Rundel

Environmental Science

Widespread invasion of riparian ecosystems by the large bamboo-like grass Arundo donax L. has altered community structure and ecological function of streams in California. This study evaluated the influence of wildfire on A. donax invasion by investigating its relative rate of reestablishment versus native riparian species after wildfire burned 300 ha of riparian woodlands along the Santa Clara River in southern California in October 2003. Post-fire A. donax growth rates and productivity were compared to those of native woody riparian species in plots established before and after the fire. Arundo donax resprouted within days after the fire and exhibited higher …
