Taxing Housework, Nancy Staudt Jan 2010

Taxing Housework, Nancy Staudt

Faculty Working Papers

This article examines the tax policy rationale for excluding non-market household labor from the tax base and argues that the conventional rationals no longer withstand scrutiny. The article goes on to argue that it is possible to include non-market household labor into the tax base, while at the same time avoiding the imposition of costs upon the (mostly) women who supply the labor. Moreover, and mort important, tax policy reform along these line would increase householder laborers' access to public retirement benefits and signal the important of the work to society generally.

Softness In International Law: A Self-Serving Quest For New Legal Materials: A Reply To Jean D’Aspremont,, Anthony D'Amato

Faculty Working Papers

As international law grows and spreads into non-traditional areas such as the international ecosystem, the global economy, and human rights, some say it is becoming fragmented. This notion can actually appeal to those scholars who want to become experts in a fragment without having the burden of connecting it to the rest of international law. Another group views the idea of isolated specialization with apprehension; they feel that international law is and must be a coherent set of principles and rules—coherent in the sense that no member of the set contradicts any other member. The burden of resolving the tension …

Emotional Expression And Depth Processing In Hiv-Positive Gay Males And Hiv-Positive Straight Males: Effects On Depression And Ptsd Symptoms, Jonathan Atwood Jan 2010

Emotional Expression And Depth Processing In Hiv-Positive Gay Males And Hiv-Positive Straight Males: Effects On Depression And Ptsd Symptoms, Jonathan Atwood

Open Access Theses

The expressive writing (EW) paradigm developed by Pennebaker (1985) has been found to provide health benefits in populations with medical and psychological conditions. Several theories have been proposed to explain the effectiveness of EW such as: the inhibition theory, increased social connections theory, the cognitive adaptation theory, and the exposure/emotional processing theory. Some studies have suggested that the effects of EW on health outcomes are mediated by varying degrees of depth processing (DP). The present study examines differences in emotional expression (EE) and DP in self-identified gay (GM) and straight men (SM), and assesses changes in levels of depression and …

Multiple Scattering From Bubble Clouds, Xiaojun Chen Jan 2010

Multiple Scattering From Bubble Clouds, Xiaojun Chen

Open Access Theses

Multiple scattering effects from bubble clouds are investigated in this study. A high performance, general purpose numerical tool for multiple scattering calculations is developed. This numerical tool is applied in three computational scenarios in this study. The total scattering cross section of a bubble cloud is investigated. Numerical results indicate that the resonant frequency of the bubble cloud is much lower than that of a single bubble. The variation of resonant frequency of multiple scattering is also studied. It is found that the resonant frequency decreases as the number of bubbles increases, or as the void fraction of the bubble …

Religious Cognition And Duration Of Maintained Grip, Evan C. Carter Jan 2010

Religious Cognition And Duration Of Maintained Grip, Evan C. Carter

Open Access Theses

Recent work suggests that the links between religious belief and behavior with a variety of positive outcomes (e.g., longer life, more marital satisfaction, scholastic achievement, better health behaviors) may be partially explained by religious belief systems' ability to foster self-control and self-regulation. The current investigation sought to explore this hypothesis by determining if induction of religious cognition (through a supraliminal religious prime) could increase behavioral self-control, operationalized as performance on a maintained grip task. Using 118 participants, the author tested whether nonconscious exposure to religious content would increase the amount of time that participants were willing to physically persist at …

Optimizing Transport Of Live Juvenile Cobia (Rachycentron Canadum): Effects Of Salinity And Shipping Biomass, John D. Stieglitz Jan 2010

Optimizing Transport Of Live Juvenile Cobia (Rachycentron Canadum): Effects Of Salinity And Shipping Biomass, John D. Stieglitz

Open Access Theses

Live juvenile cobia (Rachycentron canadum) transport methods were examined to determine opportunities for increasing packing density in closed containers for temporal durations up to 24 hours. Juvenile cobia (27 to 46 days-post-hatch (dph)) were tested for salinity tolerance following abrupt transfer from 35 ppt salinity water to salinities ranging from 0 ppt to 55 ppt. Results indicate a wide range of tolerance, with 100% survival at 24 hours post-transfer in salinities between 11 ppt and 45 ppt. Salinity preference was also tested to determine a possible correlation between acclimation salinity and salinity preference using an experimental horizontal salinity gradient with …

Investigations Concerning Maximization Of Cobia (Rachycentron Candadum) Hatchery Production Including Incorporation Of Microbial Management, Ian C. Zink Jan 2010

Investigations Concerning Maximization Of Cobia (Rachycentron Candadum) Hatchery Production Including Incorporation Of Microbial Management, Ian C. Zink

Open Access Theses

As concerns regarding the growing human population, rising seafood demand, and up to present limited success of fisheries management intensify, aquaculture is increasingly posited as a means to more efficiently produce seafood commodities. However, aquaculture expansion raises contentious issues itself. The current study addresses a number of these issues in attempts to improve hatchery production and related activities. Investigation of less-harmful chemotherapeutants for disease reduction at the egg stage could lead to improved hatchery microbial management, increased survival during early larval stages, increased efficacy of bacterial probiotic incorporation, and reductions in disease transfer between hatcheries and locations. Attempts to surface …

Sedimentology Of A Grain-Dominated Tidal Flat, Tidal Delta, And Eolianite System: Shroud Cay, Exumas, Bahamas, Maaike Petrie Jan 2010

Sedimentology Of A Grain-Dominated Tidal Flat, Tidal Delta, And Eolianite System: Shroud Cay, Exumas, Bahamas, Maaike Petrie

Open Access Theses

Sedimentary characteristics of grainy non-skeletal tidal flats along windward platform margins have not been described in modern environments and may be misidentified or misclassified in the rock record. This study describes the sedimentology of such an environment to aid in accurate identification and characterization in the ancient. At Shroud Cay, a grain-dominated tidal flat is sheltered from the high energy of the shelf by a ring of cemented Pleistocene and partly indurated Holocene eolianite islands separated by several narrow tidal passes. Depositional texture, environment of deposition and geobody mapping, extensive sediment sampling, and vibracoring have shown that, though the cemented …

Internal Wave Signature Analyses With Synthetic Aperture Radar Images In The Mid-Atlantic Bight, Jingshuang Xue Jan 2010

Internal Wave Signature Analyses With Synthetic Aperture Radar Images In The Mid-Atlantic Bight, Jingshuang Xue

Open Access Theses

57 synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images were collected over the Mid-Atlantic Bight (MAB) during the Shallow Water 2006 experiment (SW06). The dependence of internal wave (IW) signature occurrences and types in SAR images on the wind conditions is studied. A defined signature mode parameter (S sub m ) quantifies the signature of the IW intensity profile in relation to the mean backscatter in the image background to determine different IW types (single positive, single negative and double sign). The statistical results show that moderate wind speeds of 4-7 m/s are favorable for imaging IWs by SAR, whereas very few IW …

Use Of Larval Connectivity Modeling To Determine Settlement Habitats Of Panulirus Argus In The Bahamas As A Pre-Cursor To Marine Protected Area Network Planning, Karlisa A. Callwood Jan 2010

Use Of Larval Connectivity Modeling To Determine Settlement Habitats Of Panulirus Argus In The Bahamas As A Pre-Cursor To Marine Protected Area Network Planning, Karlisa A. Callwood

Open Access Theses

Caribbean spiny lobster (Panulirus argus) is a popular and heavily exploited seafood throughout its range. This species supports the primary fishery in many Caribbean countries, especially in the Bahamas, which reports the highest catches and where spiny lobster serves as the number one food export. P. argus possesses one of the longest pelagic larval durations of any marine species, ranging from 6-12 months. This allows for the possibility of long-range dispersal, which would make it difficult to determine if local adult populations originate from areas close-by or within the same countries/jurisdictions, thus presenting implications for conservation and management of the …

Semantic Geospatial Search And Ranking In The Context Of The Geographical Information System Terrafly, Mortadha Alkhawaja

Open Access Theses

Modern Web based GIS systems have responded significantly to semantic Web technology as it offers opportunities to overcome interoperability and integration problems. There are abundant needs especially for the systems intending to provide more than just a map with basic geographical information. More sophisticated systems can offer more than navigation services and can integrate with several data sources, thereby providing a richer, wider and highly usable information service to be used in business, governmental and different life domains. Search is an essential part of any GIS system because of the huge amount of data representing different meanings that are stored …

Screening For Adolescent Panic Disorder In Pediatrics Settings, Alexander Harrison Queen Jan 2010

Screening For Adolescent Panic Disorder In Pediatrics Settings, Alexander Harrison Queen

Open Access Theses

Although the prevalence rate of panic disorder (PD) among adolescents is relatively low, epidemiological research suggests that panic attacks and subclinical panic disorder symptoms occur in a substantial portion of the adolescent population. Retrospective and prospective studies also suggest that adolescence is a critical developmental period for the onset of PD symptoms. Given the negative academic, social, and emotional outcomes associated with undetected and untreated PD, effective prevention and intervention are warranted. Identifying adolescents with current PD or who may be at-risk for future PD is an important step in such treatment efforts. Among professionals working with youth, physicians and …

Effects Of A Cognitive Behavioral Stress Management Intervention On The Psychological, Endocrinological, And Immunological Health Of Minority Women Co-Infected With Hiv And Hpv, Corina Lopez Jan 2010

Effects Of A Cognitive Behavioral Stress Management Intervention On The Psychological, Endocrinological, And Immunological Health Of Minority Women Co-Infected With Hiv And Hpv, Corina Lopez

Open Access Theses

Women infected with HIV are at an increased risk for infection of Human Papillomavirus (HPV), developing cervical lesions, and developing cervical cancer. Prior research has suggested disruptions in the immune system as well as circulating levels of stress and gonadal hormones as possible explanations for the increase of HPV infection in women with HIV. Additionally, psychosocial factors such as symptoms of depression and distress have also been associated with HPV infection, as well as disruptions in immune and endocrinologial systems, suggesting a psychoneuroimmunological pathway to disease progression. It was hypothesized that HIV+HPV+ women assigned to a Cognitive Behavioral Stress Management …

On The Evolution Of Cyclonic Eddies Along The Florida Keys, Cesar Reinert Bulhoes De Morais Jan 2010

On The Evolution Of Cyclonic Eddies Along The Florida Keys, Cesar Reinert Bulhoes De Morais

Open Access Theses

Cyclonic oceanic vortices (eddies) ranging from ~10 to 150km in diameter that travel along the Florida Keys are investigated. This study employs hydrodynamic parameters from simulations in a high-resolution (~900m horizontally), three-dimensional (26 vertical levels) HYbrid Coordinates Ocean Model regional application to study coastal to offshore interactions along the Florida Keys. These parameters are compared qualitatively to observations from Chlorophyll-a Satellite (SEAWiFs) and HF Radar (WERA). Further, eddy characteristics along the Florida Keys are determined using the Okubo-Weiss parameter combined with Sea-Surface Height fields for the period 2004- 2008. Additionally, their temporal scales are assessed using spectral time-series analysis via …

Oleta River State Park (ORSP), located in North Miami-Dade County is known as the most highly urbanized State Park in all of Florida. The present study was conducted as part of an ongoing seasonally-resolved survey of fish utilization of the mangrove shorelines of Biscayne Bay. Previous Unit Management Plans published by the Division of Recreation and Parks have lacked information concerning the park's prominent mangrove forests along with its icthyofauna. The main purpose of this thesis was to provide a baseline characterization of the mangrove-fish assemblages and microhabitat trends of ORSP, against which future changes in and around the Park …

Mechanical Loading Affects The Energy Metabolism Of Intervertebral Disc Cells, Hanan Nirosha Fernando Jan 2010

Mechanical Loading Affects The Energy Metabolism Of Intervertebral Disc Cells, Hanan Nirosha Fernando

Open Access Theses

Back pain is the second most common neurological ailment in the United States and the leading cause of pain and disability. More than 80% of the total US population experiences back-pain during their life time and the annual back pain related healthcare costs exceed 100 billion dollars. While the exact cause of low back pain (LBP) is still unknown, degeneration of the intervertebral disc (IVD) has been suggested as a primary contributor. IVD is the largest avascular tissue in the human body and it is composed of three integrated tissues (annulus fibrosus - AF, nucleus pulposus - NP and cartilaginous …

Does Sleep Mediate Improvements In Functional Adaptation After A Stress Management Intervention For Women With Breast Cancer?, Sara Vargas Jan 2010

Does Sleep Mediate Improvements In Functional Adaptation After A Stress Management Intervention For Women With Breast Cancer?, Sara Vargas

Open Access Theses

The time of cancer diagnosis and treatment may be marked by an increase in stressors, which may be associated with poorer psychosocial and physical adaptation and increased sleep difficulty. Prior work has shown that psychosocial interventions that teach stress management skills can improve indicators of psychosocial and physical adaptation in women with breast cancer, mostly in cancer survivors who have completed treatment. The extant literature does not examine the effects of stress management on sleep, or the role that sleep plays in mediating psychosocial and physical adaptation outcomes, among women in the midst of treatment for non-metastatic breast cancer (BCa). …

Managing Coral Reefs In The Face Of Global Climate Change: Developing A Coral Resilience Framework, Megan Porter

Open Access Theses

Two experiments were performed to determine the effect of ocean acidification on Montastraea faveolata vertical skeletal growth and lesion healing. The first experiment used three different CO2 concentrations: present day atmospheric pCO2, 380 microatm, and the atmospheric pCO2 expected by the years 2050, 560 microatm, and 2100, 800 microatm. The second experiment used 380 and 560 microatm. In the second experiment where the influence of parent colony was analyzed, M. faveolata fragments from one coral colony had significantly slower skeletal growth rates and less healed lesion area than other colonies. Corals that calcify and regenerate tissue slower may have less …

Genome Sequence Of The Pea Aphid Acyrthosiphon Pisum, The International Aphid Genomics Consortium

Biology Articles and Papers

Aphids are important agricultural pests and also biological models for studies of insect-plant interactions, symbiosis, virus vectoring, and the developmental causes of extreme phenotypic plasticity. Here we present the 464 Mb draft genome assembly of the pea aphid Acyrthosiphon pisum. This first published whole genome sequence of a basal hemimetabolous insect provides an outgroup to the multiple published genomes of holometabolous insects. Pea aphids are host-plant specialists, they can reproduce both sexually and asexually, and they have coevolved with an obligate bacterial symbiont. Here we highlight findings from whole genome analysis that may be related to these unusual biological features. …

What About These Children? Assessing Poverty Among The ‘Hidden Population’ Of Multiracial Children In Single-Mother Families, Jenifer Bratter, Sarah Damaske Jan 2010

What About These Children? Assessing Poverty Among The ‘Hidden Population’ Of Multiracial Children In Single-Mother Families, Jenifer Bratter, Sarah Damaske

University of Kentucky Center for Poverty Research Discussion Paper Series

Capturing the conditions of children of color living in single-parent families has become more complex due to the growing presence of interracial households. This analysis assesses the size and poverty status of single-female headed families housing multiracial children. Using data from the 2000 Census, we find that 9 percent of female-headed families house either children who are classified with more than one race or are classified as a single race different than their mother’s compared to only 3 percent of married couple families. Logistic regression analyses assessing the odds of poverty status for families finds that being a multiracial family …

Is Brain Gym An Effective Educational Intervention?, Lucinda S. Spaulding, Mark P. Mostert, Andrea Beam

Faculty Publications and Presentations

Brain Gym® (BG) (BGI, 2008) is a popular commercial program sold by Brain Gym® International (BGI). Making extravagant claims for improved intellectual and physical development, it used in more than 80 countries. While BGI’s claims are persuasive, to date there is little empirical evidence validating the approach. We examine some theoretical assumptions from which BGI was developed, review the efficacy literature, and provide suggestions for making informed decisions about the judiciousness of investing time and resources in this program.

A Habitat Model For The Detection Of Two-Lined Salamanders At C. F. Phelps Wildlife Management Area, Fauquier And Culpeper Counties, Virginia, Jay Mcghee, Michael D. Killian

Virginia Journal of Science

Aquatic salamanders represent an important component of Virginia river watersheds, but despite potential declines, few specifics are known about their habitat preferences. We surveyed the habitats of the northern two-lined salamander and collected data on an array of habitat variables associated with the species. We used a logistic regression analysis to develop a model predicting its presence or absence for a given 50m-transect. Our final model incorporated the variation in stream depth and direction of stream flow and accounted for 25% of the variation in our data. We conclude that stream depth variation is an important feature of salamander habitat …
