Structural Basis For The Superior Activity Of The Large Isoform Of Snow Flea Antifreeze Protein, Yee-Foong Mok, Feng-Hsu Lin, Laurie A. Graham, Yeliz Celik, Ido Braslavsky, Peter L. Davies Jan 2010

Structural Basis For The Superior Activity Of The Large Isoform Of Snow Flea Antifreeze Protein, Yee-Foong Mok, Feng-Hsu Lin, Laurie A. Graham, Yeliz Celik, Ido Braslavsky, Peter L. Davies

Physics Faculty Research

The snow flea (Hypogastrum harveyi) is protected from freezing at sub-zero temperatures by a glycine-rich antifreeze protein (AFP) that binds to seed ice crystals and prevents them from growing larger. This AFP is hyperactive and comprises two isoforms [Graham, L. A., and Davies, P. L. (2005) Science 310, 461]. The larger isoform (15.7 kDa) exhibits several-fold higher activity than the smaller isoform (6.5 kDa), although it is considerably less abundant. To establish the molecular basis for this difference in activity, we determined the sequence of the large isoform. The primary sequences of these two isoforms are surprisingly divergent. However, both …

This edition of the Wooster Voice was published on January 22 of 2010, and it is eight pages long. The article that heads the first page is a reaction about the earthquake that has devastated Haiti. The campus will be having a Bean and Rice dinner in which part of the meal swipes will be going to relief efforts. A $250,000 grant has been given to ABS materials by Jumpstart. ABS materials was founded by chemistry professor Paul Edmiston. The three finalists for Wooster's first Provost position are described on the second page. Local, national, and world news stories are …

The Role Of Litter Quality Feedbacks In Terrestrial Nitrogen And Phosphorus Cycling, Johannes M.H. Knops, David A. Wedin, Shahid Naeem Jan 2010

The Role Of Litter Quality Feedbacks In Terrestrial Nitrogen And Phosphorus Cycling, Johannes M.H. Knops, David A. Wedin, Shahid Naeem

School of Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications

Many studies in ecosystem ecology argue for strong control of litter quality over nitrogen (N) cycling. We developed a model for temperate grasslands to test the importance of litter quality in decomposition for N and phosphorus (P) cycling based on the following premises. First, terrestrial N and P cycling differ fundamentally because N is a structural component of the soil organic matter (SOM), whereas P is not. Secondly, SOM has a much lower C:N ratio than litter inputs. Thirdly, litter decomposition follows an exponential decay with 20% of the original litter mass turning into SOM. Fourth, litter N concentration shows …

Systemic Administration Of Antiretrovirals Prior To Exposure Prevents Rectal And Intravenous Hiv-1 Transmission In Humanized Blt Mice, Paul W. Denton, John F. Krisko, Daniel A. Powell, Melissa Mathias, Youn Tae Kwak, Francisco Martinez-Torres, Wei Zou, Deborah A. Payne, Jacob D. Estes, J. Victor Garcia

Biology Faculty Publications

Successful antiretroviral pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) for mucosal and intravenous HIV-1 transmission could reduce new infections among targeted high-risk populations including discordant couples, injection drug users, high-risk women and men who have sex with men. Targeted antiretroviral PrEP could be particularly effective at slowing the spread of HIV-1 if a single antiretroviral combination were found to be broadly protective across multiple routes of transmission. Therefore, we designed our in vivo preclinical study to systematically investigate whether rectal and intravenous HIV-1 transmission can be blocked by antiretrovirals administered systemically prior to HIV-1 exposure. We performed these studies using a highly relevant in …

Implications Of The Plastid Genome Sequence Of Typha (Typhaceae, Poales) For Understanding Genome Evolution In Poaceae, Mary M. Guisinger, Timothy W. Chumley, Jennifer V. Kuehl, Jeffrey L. Boore, Robert K. Jansen Jan 2010

Implications Of The Plastid Genome Sequence Of Typha (Typhaceae, Poales) For Understanding Genome Evolution In Poaceae, Mary M. Guisinger, Timothy W. Chumley, Jennifer V. Kuehl, Jeffrey L. Boore, Robert K. Jansen

All Faculty Scholarship for the College of the Sciences

Plastid genomes of the grasses (Poaceae) are unusual in their organization and rates of sequence evolution. There has been a recent surge in the availability of grass plastid genome sequences, but a comprehensive comparative analysis of genome evolution has not been performed that includes any related families in the Poales. We report on the plastid genome of Typha latifolia, the first non-grass Poales sequenced to date, and we present comparisons of genome organization and sequence evolution within Poales. Our results confirm that grass plastid genomes exhibit acceleration in both genomic rearrangements and nucleotide substitutions. Poaceae have multiple structural rearrangements, including …

Analysis Of The Protective Effects Of Ascorbic Acid On Trichloroethylene And Pyrene Phytoxicity, Rodney Shea Harris Jan 2010

Analysis Of The Protective Effects Of Ascorbic Acid On Trichloroethylene And Pyrene Phytoxicity, Rodney Shea Harris

Student Theses and Dissertations

Phytoremediation has become a technology of choice for remediation of sites polluted with xenobiotics due to its low ecological impact, carbon sequestration, and lower cost. Plants have the natural ability to act as solar-powered pump-and-treat systems by taking up, metabolizing, or accumulating the xenobiotic. However, many of these detoxification mechanisms can lead to an up regulation of reactive oxygen species causing oxidative damage and/or morphogenic responses. In this study, we assess the tolerance of genetically engineered Arabidopsis thaliana plant lines to the two commonly found xenobiotics Trichloroethylene and Pyrene. These plants have been engineered to over-express the genes MIOX4, GlcUR, …

Virtual Reality In Art Education, Sohhyoun Yoon Jan 2010

Virtual Reality In Art Education, Sohhyoun Yoon

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis project presents possible uses of Virtual Reality for art education. To understand VR, this thesis reviews the history of using technology in educational environments and explores the concepts, definitions, and characteristics of VR in general. Then, it shows diverse purposes of VR for education and art educational environments. For an art class, the units present the use of Teen Second Life, which is a free on-line virtual world. The units demonstrate how art educators may use Teen Second life for high school art classes to build students’ understandings of their identities by creating their avatars, clothing, objects and …

Vav3 Potentiation Of Androgen Receptor Activity In Prostate Cancer, Shuyun Rao Jan 2010

Vav3 Potentiation Of Androgen Receptor Activity In Prostate Cancer, Shuyun Rao

Open Access Dissertations

Most patients undergoing androgen deprivation therapy relapse eventually and progress to androgen-independent (AI) prostate cancer. Although the mechanisms underlying progression to AI prostate cancer are not well understood, studies suggest that androgen receptor (AR) is still required for AI prostate cancer. Our lab found that Vav3, a Rho GTPase guanine nucleotide exchange factor (GEF), is up-regulated during the progression of androgen-dependent human prostate cancer cells to androgen-independence in vivo and in cell-based experiments. Since Vav3 significantly increases ligand-dependent AR transcriptional activity and this action requires the Vav3 pleckstrin homology (PH) domain but not Vav3 GEF activity, we explored the role …
