Controlling Nonviral Gene Delivery through the Cell-Biomaterial Interface
Beth Ann Duensing, M.S. University of Nebraska, 2010
Adviser: Angela Pannier

Cell-biomaterial interactions and the corresponding cellular behaviors are poorly understood. Therefore, in this study, the ability of biomaterial surface properties to control nonviral gene delivery was investigated through surface chemistry and protein adsorption and subsequently correlated to cellular behaviors controlled by cell-biomaterial interactions. Self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) of alkanethiols on gold were used as model biomaterials to investigate the effect of surface properties on nonviral gene transfer to cells adhered to these surfaces. SAMs presenting terminal CH3, OH, COO- …

P66shc--A Longevity Redox Protein In Human Prostate Cancer Progression And Metastasis : P66shc In Cancer Progression And Metastasis., Mythilypriya Rajendran, Paul Thomes, Li Zhang, Suresh Veeramani, Ming-Fong Lin

Journal Articles: Biochemistry & Molecular Biology

p66Shc, a 66 kDa proto-oncogene Src homologous-collagen homologue (Shc) adaptor protein, is classically known in mediating receptor tyrosine kinase signaling and recently identified as a sensor to oxidative stress-induced apoptosis and as a longevity protein in mammals. The expression of p66Shc is decreased in mice and increased in human fibroblasts upon aging and in aging-related diseases, including prostate cancer. p66Shc protein level correlates with the proliferation of several carcinoma cells and can be regulated by steroid hormones. Recent advances point that p66Shc protein plays a role in mediating cross-talk between steroid hormones and redox signals by serving as a common …

A Predictive Model For Detection Of Agrilus Planipennis (Col., Buprestidae) Larvae In Girdled Ash (Fraxinus Spp.), J. M. Marshall, A. J. Storer, I. Fraser, V. C. Mastro

United States Department of Agriculture, Forest Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

Agrilus planipennis (emerald ash borer, Coleoptera: Buprestidae) is a pest of ash (Fraxinus spp.) in North America and has caused mortality of ash throughout its introduced range. One technique used for detection of A. planipennis is the establishment and peeling of girdled trap trees. In an effort to reduce the search effort and target detection survey efforts within ash trap trees, a predictive model was created using data from 2007 and validated using data from 2008. In 2007 and 2008, ash trap trees were established, harvested, peeled and inspected for A. planipennis larvae. Gaussian curves were fit to describe …

Wheat Cultivar-Specific Disease Synergism And Alteration Of Virus Accumulation During Co-Infection With Wheat Streak Mosaic Virus And Triticum Mosaic Virus, Satyanarayana Tatineni, Robert A. Graybosch, Gary L. Hein, Stephen N. Wegulo, Roy French

Department of Plant Pathology: Faculty Publications

Triticum mosaic virus (TriMV), the type member of the newly proposed Poacevirus genus, and Wheat streak mosaic virus (WSMV), the type member of Tritimovirus genus of the family Potyviridae, infect wheat naturally in the Great Plains and are transmitted by wheat curl mites. In this study, we examined the ability of these viruses to infect selected cereal hosts, and found several differential hosts between TriMV and WSMV. Additionally, we examined the interaction between WSMV and TriMV in three wheat cultivars at two temperature regimens (19 and 20 to 26°C), and quantified the virus concentration in single and double infections …

Why Some Stems Are Red: Cauline Anthocyanins Shield Photosystem Ii Against High Light Stress, Dana A. Dudle Mar 2010

Why Some Stems Are Red: Cauline Anthocyanins Shield Photosystem Ii Against High Light Stress, Dana A. Dudle

Biology Faculty publications

Red-stemmed plants are extremely common, yet the functions of cauline anthocyanins are largely unknown. The possibility that photoabatement by anthocyanins in the periderm reduces the propensity for photoinhibition in cortical chlorenchyma was tested for Cornus stolonifera. Anthocyanins were induced in green stems exposed to full sunlight. PSII quantum yields (ФPSII) and photochemical quenching coefficients were depressed less in red than in green stems, both under a light ramp and after prolonged exposures to saturating white light. These differences were primarily attributable to the attenuation of PAR, especially green/yellow light, by anthocyanins. However, the red internodes also …

Creating An Immersive Game World With Evolutionary Fuzzy Cognitive Maps, Yundong Cai, Ah-Hwee Tan, Zhiqi Shen, Boyang Li

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

An increasing number of serious games have been developed to enhance the user experiences in education and training. In order to bridge the gap of game experiences in the virtual environment and in the real life, it is crucial to generate believable characters and contexts in real-time. However, the variables to be simulated for a large-scale serious game are numerous. These variables are involved in complex causal relationships and their values change over time. In view that world modeling has not been well addressed with conventional models, this paper uses a computational model Evolutionary Fuzzy Cognitive Map (EFCM) to model …

Effects Of Experimental Freezing On Soil Nitrogen Dynamics In Soils From A Net Nitrification Gradient In A Nitrogen-Saturated Hardwood Forest Ecosystem, Frank S. Gilliam, Adam Cook, Salina Lyter Mar 2010

Effects Of Experimental Freezing On Soil Nitrogen Dynamics In Soils From A Net Nitrification Gradient In A Nitrogen-Saturated Hardwood Forest Ecosystem, Frank S. Gilliam, Adam Cook, Salina Lyter

Biological Sciences Faculty Research

This study examined effects of soil freezing on N dynamics in soil along an N processing gradient within a mixed hardwood dominated watershed at Fernow Experimental Forest, West Virginia. Sites were designated as LN (low rates of N processing), ML (moderately low), MH (moderately high), and HN (high). Soils underwent three 7-day freezing treatments (0, –20, or –80 °C) in the laboratory. Responses varied between temperature treatments and along the gradient. Initial effects differed among freezing treatments for net N mineralization, but not nitrification, in soils across the gradient, generally maintained at LN < ML ≤ MH < HN for all treatments. Net N mineralization potential was higher following freezing at –20 and –80 °C than control; all were higher than at 0 °C. Net nitrification potential exhibited similar patterns. LN was an exception, with net nitrification low regardless of treatment. Freezing response of N mineralization differed greatly from that of nitrification, suggesting that soil freezing may decouple two processes of the soil N cycle that are otherwise tightly linked at our site. Results also suggest that soil freezing at temperatures commonly experienced at this site can further increase net nitrification in soils already exhibiting high nitrification from N saturation.

In The Weeds: Homeowners Falling Behind On Their Mortgages, Lenders Playing The Foreclosure Game, And Cities Left Paying The Price, Kristin M. Pinkston

Southern Illinois University Law Journal

As the rate of mortgage foreclosures has risen, the plight of evicted homeowners and the significant financial losses for banks have become common knowledge. Remarkably absent from the discussion, however, has been the extreme hardship placed on municipalities. Municipalities face not only increased crime, neighborhood blighting, and severe public health and safety risks, but also great financial burdens. This economic strain is amplified by what has become a sort of “foreclosure game” for many foreclosing mortgagees. In short, some mortgagees evict homeowners in the midst of foreclosure proceedings, elect not to maintain and repair the subject property, and in some …

Early Retirement Payments Under Tenure And Fica Taxes: Transfer Of A Property Right Or Just Another Payday?, Carson Maricle Mar 2010

Early Retirement Payments Under Tenure And Fica Taxes: Transfer Of A Property Right Or Just Another Payday?, Carson Maricle

Southern Illinois University Law Journal

The increase of full-time faculty members working past traditional retirement age is causing concern among America's colleges and universities. Due to the current economic situation, universities will continue to induce their older, higher-paid faculty members to retire to reduce costs. Currently, there is a split among circuit courts regarding whether Federal Insurance Contributions Act ("FICA") taxation is applicable to early retirement payments made to induce tenured college faculty to retire. This comment examines the implications of subjecting such early retirement payments to FICA taxation. It explores the background of tenure rights and FICA tax generally as well as the position …

Dual Functions Of Interferon Regulatory Factors 7c In Epstein-Barr Virus–Mediated Transformation Of Human B Lymphocytes, Yong Zhao, Dongsheng Xu, Yanjun Jiang, Luwen Zhang

School of Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications

Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) infection is associated with several human malignancies. Interferon (IFN) regulatory factor 7 (IRF-7) has several splicing variants, and at least the major splicing variant (IRF-7A) has oncogenic potential and is associated with EBV transformation processes. IRF-7C is an alternative splicing variant with only the DNA-binding domain of IRF-7. Whether IRF-7C is present under physiological conditions and its functions in viral transformation are unknown. In this report, we prove the existence of IRF-7C protein and RNA in certain cells under physiological conditions, and find that high levels of IRF-7C are associated with EBV transformation of human primary B …

Antiques Roadshow: The Common Law And The Coming Age Of Groundwater Marketing, Dean Baxtresser Mar 2010

Antiques Roadshow: The Common Law And The Coming Age Of Groundwater Marketing, Dean Baxtresser

Michigan Law Review

Groundwater law in the United States is ill suited to deal with the issue of groundwater marketing. As freshwater shortages become more common with increasing population and a warming climate, scholars and business people are touting water markets as the solution to conservation and distribution, as well as a source of hefty profits. T Boone Pickens-the famous oil tycoon of Texas-has turned this concept into reality with his attempt to exploit the groundwater of the Ogallala Aquifer in the Texas Panhandle for thirsty Texas cities. Despite the looming water shortages, however, states have not adapted their laws to deal with …

Morphology And Evolution Of Caudal Fin In Lamniform Sharks, Sun H. Kim

College of Liberal Arts & Social Sciences Theses and Dissertations

Sharks have a distinct asymmetrical caudal fin referred to as heterocercal tail that is a key characteristic of the group and has diversified within sharks in ways that are correlated with lifestyle. However, practically no study examining the evolutionary trend and history of the caudal fin morphology within a specific shark group exists. Here, I examined the caudal fin morphology and evolution of the shark order Lamniformes that consists of 15 extant species with diverse behaviors and lifestyles. The goals of this study are to describe the skeletal morphology of the caudal fin in each lamniform species based primarily on …
