Is New Hampshire's Climate Warming?, Lawrence C. Hamilton, Barry D. Keim, Cameron P. Wake
Carsey Publications
This Carsey brief looks at temperature anomalies across New Hampshire and shows that not only is the state warmer than it has been in the past, but it is also warming faster than much of the planet. Sociologist Lawrence Hamilton, research associate professor Cameron Wake, and former NH state climatologist Barry Keim analyzed over 100 years of temperatures across the state to produce this data for the Carsey Institute in August 2010.

Abstinence Self-Efficacy, Mood, And Treatment Outcomes In Emerging Adults With Substance Dependence, Brenna L. Greenfield
Psychology ETDs
This study examined the relationship between abstinence self-efficacy (ASE), depression, psychological distress and treatment outcomes in 18 to 24 year olds with substance dependence. Three hundred and three participants completed questionnaires and interviews at three time points during a 28-day twelve-step based inpatient program, and at 1-month and 3-months post-discharge. ASE was measured with the Alcohol and Drug Use Self-Efficacy scale; psychological distress was assessed with the Brief Symptom Inventory 18; and depression diagnoses were determined from the Structured Clinical Interview for the DSM-IV. We tested the association between intake ASE, distress, and depression. Random coefficient regression analyses focused on …

The Portland State University Task Force On Latina/O Student Success, Carlos J. Crespo
Global Diversity and Inclusion Publications and Presentations
In the fall of 2009, Portland State University President Wim Wiewel commissioned a Task Force, and an associated Advisory Board composed of community stakeholders, to make strategic recommendations concerning how Portland State can best serve the higher education needs and aspirations of Oregon’s Latino community. President Wiewel further charged the Task Force to base its recommendations on the best research and evidence available and to consider the most effective investment of PSU resources.
The Task Force met monthly from September 2009 to May 2010. It reviewed the literature, studied relevant data, learned from the success of comparable institutions, and performed …

Increasing Latino Engagement In Sustainability And Philanthropic Efforts Of Mainstream Youth Development Organizations In The United States, Lynda Gonzales
Increasing Latino Engagement In Sustainability And Philanthropic Efforts Of Mainstream Youth Development Organizations In The United States, Lynda Gonzales
College of Liberal Arts & Social Sciences Theses and Dissertations
Through interviews and the review of existing data from 4-H, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts and the YMCA, this study examines Latino participation in the four organizations. In addition, through research, interviews with community leaders and with Latino philanthropists the study analyzes Latino nonprofit engagement and philanthropic practices. The thesis argues that increasing Latino engagement in mainstream youth development organizations first requires historical and contemporary analysis of related practices in order to create attractive, relevant and successful strategies. Both historical and contemporary literature is reviewed in this study. New research is focused on two main areas 1) the current engagement of …

South Dakota Sustainable Community Project : End Of The Year Report 2009-2010, Marilyn Rasmussen Ph.D., Jessica Kirkham
SDSU Extension Circulars
The South Dakota Sustainable Community Project utilizes evidence-based curricula or programs (EBPs) within a framework that creates a partnership among universities, schools, and communities. Promoting School-community-university Partnerships to Enhance Resilience (PROSPER) is a tested, three-tiered model that brings together a community team, a prevention coordinator, and a state management team to support sustained youth and family programming with the addition of technical assistance of PROSPER Central. The communities in Charles Mix and Roberts counties have high poverty rates, problematical school drop-out rates, and challenging school environments. To address the needs of the youth and their families, a community team for …

Skew Selection Theory Applied To The Wealth And Welfare Of Nations, Susan F. Allen, Deby L. Cassill
Skew Selection Theory Applied To The Wealth And Welfare Of Nations, Susan F. Allen, Deby L. Cassill
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
According to skew selection theory, working citizens who build wealth and, at the same time, share portions of their wealth with those in need are more likely to survive economic downturns than citizens who hoard wealth. In this article, skew selection is employed as a theoreticalframework to support governmental efforts to develop social policies that protect the income of working citizens and, at the same time, provide for vulnerable, non-working children and elders. To illustrate its applicability, the social policies of Japan, Sweden and the United States-all of which are challenged by decaying ratios of working to non-working citizens-are compared …
A Critical Constructionist View Of "At-Risk" Youth In Alternative Education, Rachelle Silverstein Touzard
A Critical Constructionist View Of "At-Risk" Youth In Alternative Education, Rachelle Silverstein Touzard
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Family therapists and school counselors are increasingly called upon to provide services for youth in alternative education (Carver, Lewis, & Tice, 2010). Alternative education systems are programs for youth who have been defined as at risk. This study explored the at-risk discourse and asked the questions (a) how do youth and staff define the term at risk, (b) construct their experience in alternative education systems, and (c) experience their relationships with each other.
Combined elements from critical theory and a social constructionist perspective guided this study. A qualitative, grounded theory method was used that included semi structured interviews with …

Graphic Communication
This Senior Project for the Graphic Communication major at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo is an examination of the marketing and communication outreach efforts taken by non-profit and for-profit organizations in raising their visibility in print as well as new electronic media. An initial email and phone interview inquiry to 20 non-profits and 10 for-profit agencies was initiated in the Winter Quarter (January 2010). Responses have been evaluated and integrated into the project to determine what shifts or impact new media have upon these agencies. Survey responses were not as plentiful as expected, however, respondents provided information that was sufficient …

Engaging The Engagers: Implications For The Improvement Of Extension Work Design, William S. Weyhrauch, Satoris S. Culbertson, Maura J. Mills, Clive J. Fullager
Journal of Extension
County Extension agents from the Midwest were surveyed on a variety of psychological variables. Differences among agents in the fields of Family and Consumer Science (FCS), Agriculture and Natural Resources (ANR), and 4H Youth Development (4HYD) were examined as well as differences among highly and lesser engaged agents. Results showed that FCS agents had higher levels of dedication, absorption, and work-family facilitation. ANR agents reported greater work-role salience than other areas and lower family-role salience. Highly engaged agents reported experiencing greater work-family facilitation, positive affectivity, and psychological capital. Implications for design and management of Extension work are discussed.
Engaging Latino Audiences In Out-Of-School Programs About Science, Brett L. Bruyere, Guadalupe Salazar
Engaging Latino Audiences In Out-Of-School Programs About Science, Brett L. Bruyere, Guadalupe Salazar
Journal of Extension
Under-represented groups such as Latinos lack sufficient voice in important conversations about science topics. Yet we know that Latinos are under-represented in the profession. One path to careers in science is through early exposure during youth. This article describes research to identify how to engage Latino groups in science programs, such as Extension-sponsored youth programs. Based on focus groups with Latino parents in two communities, we examine interest levels, barriers to participation, and preferences for program formats. The results have implications for organizations that seek to engage more Latinos in their science programs.
An Ecological Risk/Protective Factor Approach To Understanding Depressive Symptoms In Adolescents, Jonathan Olson, H Wallace Goddard
An Ecological Risk/Protective Factor Approach To Understanding Depressive Symptoms In Adolescents, Jonathan Olson, H Wallace Goddard
Journal of Extension
We applied an ecological multiple risk/protective factor model to study factors related to depressive symptoms among adolescents. Participants were 39,740 adolescents who self-reported risk factors, protective factors, and depressive symptoms on a school-based survey. Results indicate that an index of multiple risk was related to increased depressive symptoms. Two hypothesized protective factors moderated the effects of the risk index; four other hypothesized protective factors were directly related to lower levels of depressive symptomatology. These findings suggest that prevention strategies for externalizing behaviors currently used in Extension programs might be able to be extended to address depressive symptoms.

Disrupting The Impact Of Socio-Contextual Disadvantage On School Readiness Skill Attainment Among Preschool Children: The Role Of Head Start Attendance, Kristin Leigh Callahan
Disrupting The Impact Of Socio-Contextual Disadvantage On School Readiness Skill Attainment Among Preschool Children: The Role Of Head Start Attendance, Kristin Leigh Callahan
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
Created in 1965, Head Start is the longest running national school readiness program in the United States. Head Start was developed to improve children's social and academic readiness for kindergarten and to reduce the academic achievement gap between impoverished and more affluent children. However, questions about the effectiveness of Head Start have trouble the program since its inception. Head Start children often experience considerably more sociocontextual risk, specifically in the form of more economic disadvantage, maternal psychological distress, and dangerous neighborhoods. The goal of the present study was to evaluate the extent to which attending Head Start buffers children from …
Cognitive Biases In Childhood Anxiety Disorders: Do Interpretive And Judgment Biases Distinguish Anxious Youth From Their Non-Anxious Peers?, Melinda Cannon
Cognitive Biases In Childhood Anxiety Disorders: Do Interpretive And Judgment Biases Distinguish Anxious Youth From Their Non-Anxious Peers?, Melinda Cannon
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to examine cognitive biases in clinically anxious children compared to normal children and to determine if cognitive biases could discriminate anxious youth from non-anxious youth. Two specific cognitive biases were the focus of the present study—interpretive biases (i.e., the tendency to interpret neutral stimuli in a negative way) and judgment biases (i.e., a lowered estimate of one's ability to cope with a threatening situation). Twenty-four youth comprised the anxiety disordered sample and were each matched to two normal youth on four demographic variables (gender, age, ethnicity, and family income level), thus the matched comparison …

Teacher Stress: An Assessment Of Teachers' Need For And Receptiveness Towards A Stress Reduction Program Within One Rural School System, Tyler Christine Rosenberg
Teacher Stress: An Assessment Of Teachers' Need For And Receptiveness Towards A Stress Reduction Program Within One Rural School System, Tyler Christine Rosenberg
Educational Specialist, 2009-2019
There is a concern for the level of stress teachers experience in their jobs. The effects of stress are not only harmful for the individual teacher, but for the teacher’s students and the learning environment as well (Travers & Cooper, 1996). Stress among teachers is related to absenteeism, turnover, and early retirement, which negatively affect the climate of the school and lead to poor student outcomes, both academically and behaviorally. The nature and severity of these concerns highlight the need for programs designed to reduce stress among teachers. A critical first step in partaking in program development efforts is to …

Fourth And Fifth Grade Student Achievement And Possible Relationship To Three Teacher Selection Tools, Jon D. Hall
Dissertations
This study attempts to identify possible relationships between cognitive ability, teacher dispositions, and content knowledge and elementary classroom achievement. Data was gathered on teachers using the Wonderlic Personnel TestTM, Star Teacher Pre-ScreenerTM, and Praxis IITM assessments and compared to classroom growth on the Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) computer-based adaptive assessment. The sample size was limited but included fourth and fifth grade teachers that volunteered from selected Kentucky public school districts. Pearson correlation analysis did not show any significant relationship between the scores on the three teacher assessments and student academic growth using the MAP growth index scores for corresponding …
Child Kinship Care: An Exploratory Mixed Methods Study Of Social Support, Resources, And Health Issues Of Nebraska Child Kinship Caregivers, Toni L. Hill
College of Education and Human Sciences: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between both the social support and resources of child kinship caregivers and the caregivers’ health. An exploratory sequential three phase mixed methods design was used. Phase I encompassed a single case study of a Nebraska program serving largely grandparents raising grandchildren. Phase II consisted of multiple individual caregiver case studies, and Phase III consisted of a survey of all caregivers affiliated with the program. Qualitative findings from the first two phases yielded similar caregiver information regarding social support and resources issues. Differing information was received regarding health issues. Quantitative analysis …
