Relationship Of Personal, Familial, And Abuse-Specific Factors With Outcome Following Childhood Sexual Abuse, C. Thresa Yancey, David J. Hansen
Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications
An examination of the literature on factors related to outcome following child sexual abuse (CSA) revealed many factors that may contribute to symptoms displayed by victims. Factors are divided into three categories: Personal Factors, Familial Factors, and Abuse- Specific Factors. Personal factors are those inherent to the victim, including age, gender, developmental disability, attributions regarding the abuse, and treatment following abuse. Familial factors are defined as those factors associated with other family members. These include parental history of abuse, parental reaction to the disclosure, parental support of the victim, parental mental health, family stress, and treatment following abuse for the …

As senior program directors and field supervisors, we at Half the Sky Foundation asked ourselves, how can we empower children's welfare institution staff to provide nurture, enrichment, and education for all young children in state care? Creating an infrastructure for providing professional development was the first step. The HTS training infrastructure for early childhood includes international experts and a cadre of skilled Chinese teacher trainers, who together create a network of HTS teacher trainers (program directors and field supervisors for Infant Nurture and Little Sisters). In addition, Blue Sky model training centers-soon to number 31, one for each province of …

This piece grows out of my on-going project, ‘Childhood as Spectacle’, and my enduring concern with social reproduction and what it does for and to Marxist and other critical political-economic analyses. After more than 30 years of Marxist-feminist interventions around these issues, symptomatic silences around social reproduction remain all too common in analyses of capitalism. Working through these issues and their occlusion, I offer what I hope is a useful and vibrant theoretical framework for examining geographies of children, youth, and families. Building this framework calls into play three overlapping issues; neoliberal capitalism in crisis and David Harvey’s notion of …

Capital Markets, Cdfis, And Organizational Credit Risk, Charles Tansey, Michael E. Swack, Michael Tansey, Vicky Stein
Capital Markets, Cdfis, And Organizational Credit Risk, Charles Tansey, Michael E. Swack, Michael Tansey, Vicky Stein
Carsey Publications
Can Community Development Financial Institutions (CDFIs) get unlimited amounts of low cost, unsecured, short- and long-term funding from the capital markets based on their organizational credit risk? Can they get pricing, flexibility, and procedural parity with for-profit corporations of equivalent credit risk? One of the key objectives of this book is to explain the reasons why the answer to the two questions above remains “no.” The other two key objectives are to show the inner workings of what has been done to date to overcome the obstacles so that we don’t have to retrace the same steps and recommend additional …

Teachers Matter: Feelings Of School Connectedness And Positive Youth Development Among Coos County Youth, Nena F. Stracuzzi, Meghan L. Mills
Carsey Publications
Students who feel positively about their education, have a sense of belonging in school, and maintain good relationships with students and staff generally feel connected to their schools. In fact, 63 percent of Coos youth report feeling this way. It is one of the most important factors in promoting socio-emotional well-being and positive youth development, according to authors Nena Stracuzzi and Meghan Mills. Their research, using surveys of Coos students, shows that students who feel more connected to their schools usually get better grades, have higher self-esteem, use fewer substances, and engage in aggressive behaviors less frequently. Their latest brief …

Defining A Foster Care Placement Move: The Perspective Of Adults Who Formerly Lived In Multiple Out-Of-Home Placements, Yvonne Unrau
Defining A Foster Care Placement Move: The Perspective Of Adults Who Formerly Lived In Multiple Out-Of-Home Placements, Yvonne Unrau
Social Work Faculty Publications
Several studies have demonstrated that children who experience multiple placements are more likely to experience behavioral problems and are less likely to achieve reunification. However, little is known about how move transitions— from one foster home to another, from foster care to birth family home, or between family placements and group care facilities—are perceived or experienced by children in foster care, or those formerly in foster care. This qualitative study examines the definition of foster care placement moves from the perspective of adults formerly in foster care. Participants identify both physical and psychological shifts as key dimensions of the placement …

Final Report: Anchorage Disproportionate Minority Contact Study, André B. Rosay, Ronald S. Everett, William Hurr
Reports
This project examined disproportionate minority contact in Anchorage, Alaska. It was designed to provide a more nuanced understanding of disproportionate minority contact at the referral stage (when law enforcement officers refer youth to the Alaska Division of Juvenile Justice). To do so, we relied on community involvement and utilized different statistical techniques to examine the geography and development of disproportionate minority contact. Researchers partnered with practitioners from the Anchorage Disproportionate Minority Contact Initiative to structure the research process and to interpret and disseminate results. Geographic analyses were conducted to examine where the highest levels of disproportionate minority contact were occurring …

Evaluation Of Lancaster County Early Assessment Process, Juvenile Justice Institute, University Of Nebraska At Omaha, Anne M. Hobbs, Myungwoo Kim
Reports
In January 2009, Lancaster County implemented an early screening and assessment process. The goal of this pilot project was to ensure consistent processing of juvenile offenses, especially for very young offenders, and to ensure that youth were matched to the most appropriate early intervention. The Juvenile Justice Institute was invited to evaluate the effectiveness of this early intervention. Little is known about the effect this project has had on official juvenile court processing of youth, so another important question is how this early process has impacted the overall number of youth entering the Lancaster County juvenile justice system. To evaluate …

Young Child Poverty In 2009: Rural Poverty Rate Jumps To Nearly 29 Percent In Second Year Of Recession, Marybeth J. Mattingly, Michelle L. Stransky
Carsey Publications
The U.S. Census Bureau's release of its American Community Survey data in September 2010 illustrated some expected changes in poverty rates in 2009, the second year of the Great Recession. For young children under age 6, living in poverty is especially difficult, given the long-term effects on health and education. Every region of the country except the West saw increases in rural young child poverty in 2009.

Latin American Energy Dialogue, White Papers and Reports
This white paper provides a means for indigenous peoples to communicate current information and impacts among constituents and tribal groups. These concepts are very important in understanding how these groups disseminate policy and resource utilization impacts such as energy policies related to traditional knowledge associated to generic resources. In todays society the development of Information Communication Technologies (ICT) is imminent yet, large segments of the world remain marginalized. Our contention is that peer-to-peer and inter-institutional networks can be used to connect local with global systems to close this divide. Using today virtual and digital technologies the gap can be bridged …

A Social Worker's Dilemma : Does Experience Make A Difference? : How Biases And Judgements Affect Social Worker's Assessments Of Collectivist Culture Immigrant Families : A Project Based Upon An Independent Investigation, Theresa J. Cary
Theses, Dissertations, and Projects
This pilot study was undertaken to assess how social workers in western hospitals respond to a vignette about a collectivist child and the child's family. America has many immigrant populations that often have different values and ethics from mainstream America. Social workers encounter these individuals in their work and it is important that social workers are equipped with the necessary knowledge and skills to respond to the client's needs. Using a snowball sampling method, 19 participants responded to a mixed method online survey. The participants were predominately Caucasian, ranged in ages from 26- 60 years of age, had their MSW, …

Community Engaged Research At The Regional Research Institute For Human Services, Diane Yatchmenoff, Laurie E. Powers
Regional Research Institute for Human Services
Participatory models of research, in which communities are actively engaged in the research process through partnerships with academic institutions, are restructuring how scientific knowledge is being created. Community engaged research, also known as, community based participatory research (CBPR), and participatory action research (PAR) is increasingly recognized as a framework for high quality scientific inquiry. In community engaged research, researchers and evaluators work side‐by‐side with community members in all phases of the research process, from defining social problems and research questions, conceptualizing research design, carrying out research, and interpreting and disseminating findings. It requires partnership development, collaboration and cooperation, and commitment …

Children And Nature Forum Update, Charles Yaple
Taproot: A Journal of Outdoor Education
Approximately five years have lapsed since Richard Louv launched an unanticipated national children and nature movement with publication of his book. Last Child in the Woods: Saving our Children from Nat tire Deficit Disorder. Just as Gifford Pinchot informed and inflamed (with Theodore Roosevelt's help) public consciousness by coining the term "Conservation" in the early 1900's; Louv's "Nature Deficit Disorder" (NDD) resonated with the suspicions of outdoor professionals in 2005. Seemingly almost everywhere, children were experiencing the outdoors less and less and they, and society, were paying a heavy price because of it!
