Framing Justice: Media, Bias, And Legal Decisionmaking, Perry L. Moriearty

During the 1990s, the news media saturated the American public with stories and images of glassy-eyed, teenaged “superpredators,” who allegedly killed and maimed for sport. These violent, dark and “morally impoverished” youth were running wild in our city streets was the message, and unless we did something, they would destroy the very moral fabric of our society. Drawing on recent social science studies, which demonstrate that the graphic and racialized content of crime news coverage can increase consumers’ cognitive bias in imperceptible, but determinative ways, I argue that exposure to the “superpredator” narrative may have had a discernable impact on …

Defining Fear And Aggression: Typological Emotive Responses To Perceptions Of Textual Symbols, Donna Lynn Salazar
Criminology & Criminal Justice Theses - Archive
Millennial technology has shed new light on early biological theories of crime. Recent evidence supports a new paradigm in criminological research designed to embrace an integration of neuro-scientific, psychological, and sociological theories in order to understand the multi-dimensional characteristics of causality involved in criminal behavior. The current study explores the value of an integrated approach to define typological fear and aggression emotive responses utilizing symbolic interaction as the mechanism by which the various disciplines interact. Through perceptions of emotionally charged textual symbols, typological representations of fear and aggression, and a 3-Part electronic survey instrument, the study reveals support for an …

The purpose of this paper is to determine the opinions of graduate and undergraduate students who attend the University of Texas at Arlington (UTA) regarding policies for carrying guns on campus while differentiating between criminal justice and non-criminal justice majors. The researcher conducted a survey with the target population being students who attend classes on the UTA campus. The Care, Custody, And Control Of Incarcerated Women In Ecuador, Jill Harrison, Maureen Norton-Hawk
Societies Without Borders
This paper presents findings on the custody, care and control of incarcerated women in Ecuador. Although the interrelationship of abuse, poverty, drugs and incarceration is often perceived as a U.S. phenomenon, this paper presents data on a group of structurally and institutionally vulnerable women who are serving mandatory sentences of 6 to 8 years for drug possession and trafficking. Our mixed methodology of survey data, personal interviews, and secondary source materials uncovers some disturbing human rights violations and documents the challenges these incarcerated women face as mothers and inmates.
The Contested Terrains Of Public Sociology: Theoretical And Practical Lessons From The Movement To Defend Public Housing In Pre- And Post-Katrina New Orleans, John Arena
Societies Without Borders
In this article I argue professional and policy sociology are antagonistic, rather than compatible with the theory and practice of a critical, organic, public sociology in de- fense of human rights and social justice. Drawing upon my graduate school experi- ence and relationship with New Orleans public housing movement, I show how prac- ticing public sociology in various terrains required unmasking and opposing the apo- litical pretenses of professional sociology and the agenda-setting of neoliberal govern- ment and corporate patrons of policy sociology. The current global economic crisis and assault on university budgets is strengthening the policy and professional sociolo- …
Efficacy Of The Obama Policies To Combat Al-Qa’Eda, The Taliban, And Associated Forces—The First Year, Jeffrey F. Addicott
Efficacy Of The Obama Policies To Combat Al-Qa’Eda, The Taliban, And Associated Forces—The First Year, Jeffrey F. Addicott
Faculty Articles
In President Obama’s first year in office, he failed in combating al-Qa’eda, the Taliban, and associated forces. President Obama wished to change the perception on the ‘War on Terror’ established by the Bush Administration, but instead created more confusion and frustration in an attempt to change old policies.
Most notably, President Obama refused to irrevocably and sternly tell the American public that the conflict with al-Qa’eda was indeed a war. The Bush Administration’s first action taken after 9/11 was the pronouncement that the United States was at war. President Obama instead referred to the conflict as an “overseas contingency operation.” …
