Chicago Anti-Apartheid Movement
Length: 95 minutes
Oral history interview of Clarice Durham by Lauren Ashley Alexander
Clarice Durham recalls her childhood and recounts her work with the Illinois NAACP, The National Anti-Imperialist Movement in Solidarity with African Liberation (NAIMSAL), and as co-chair of the National Alliance Against Racial and Political Oppression. She campaigned for justice in the Scottsboro Boys case in 1931, attended the founding convention of the Progressive Party in 1948, and participated in the March on Washington in 1963. Access To Higher Education For Undocumented Students: “Outlaws” Of Social Justice, Equity, And Equality, Corinne Harmon, Glenda Carne, Kristina Lizardy-Hajbi, Eugene Wilkerson
Access To Higher Education For Undocumented Students: “Outlaws” Of Social Justice, Equity, And Equality, Corinne Harmon, Glenda Carne, Kristina Lizardy-Hajbi, Eugene Wilkerson
Journal of Praxis in Multicultural Education
The status of access to higher education for undocumented students in this country is inconsistent from state to state, region to region, and the nation at large. This inconsistency is reflected in the development of policies and legislation that either provide or limit access to an affordable higher education for these students. Beneath the external debates regarding the application of instate tuition rates for undocumented students exists an underlying struggle embedded within an inherent cultural, societal, and systemic bias around beliefs, power, and privilege.
The marginalization of undocumented students in accessing higher education—as evidenced by the absence of social justice, …
Narratives From Non-Profit Workers: The Journey Of Helping Women Leave Prostitution, Rachel D. Collins
Narratives From Non-Profit Workers: The Journey Of Helping Women Leave Prostitution, Rachel D. Collins
Senior Honors Theses
Prostitution is connected with several factors–abuse, low self-esteem, drugs, and homelessness. Many negative emotions are experienced while prostituting. The emotional and physical effects of prostitution can remain years after the woman has left prostitution. The process of leaving prostitution can be strenuous, and necessitates a strong support group. The narratives of service providers from organizations reaching out to prostitutes are examined. Through interviews, the journey of helping prostitutes were studied to find themes associated with supporting the prostitute’s exit from her previous life to the acclamation of a new lifestyle.

Challenges In Serving Rural American Children Through The Summer Food Service Program, Barbara Wauchope, Nena F. Stracuzzi
Carsey Publications
When the school year ends, many low-income children rely on the USDA's Summer Food Service Program (SFSP) to supplement their diet. But less than one-third of SFSP sites are located in rural communities and rural children participate at a lower rate than those in more urban areas.

The Collateral Consequences Of Masculinizing Violence, Jamie R. Abrams
The Collateral Consequences Of Masculinizing Violence, Jamie R. Abrams
William & Mary Journal of Race, Gender, and Social Justice
Before an enraged gunman fired thirty-six deadly shots into an exercise class filled with women, on August 4, 2009, in Pennsylvania, he blogged that his killing spree was the result of his failure to meet society’s expectations of him as a man. This violent act tragically affirms that hegemonic masculinity — a dominant form of masculinity whereby some types of men have power over women and over some other men — can directly cause violence against women and reveals both an underlying connection between masculinities scholarship and feminist scholarship and the value in exploring that linkage further in both theory …

Innovative libraries around the world are embracing web-scale discovery as a powerful new ally in bringing net-gen users back to the library as the starting point for research.
This groundbreaking new technology exposes content riches in a way that “millenials” and other end-users expect and understand: from a single search box and an appealing, easy interface.Plus, it delivers unbiased, relevant results in sub-second response time, liberating researchers to move forward in their work.
Web-scale discovery is now in use by academic libraries and evidence shows it’s moving them forward, improving service and elevating their profile. Spend an hour hearing for …
Implicit Bias, Election '08, And The Myth Of A Post-Racial America, Jeffrey J. Rachlinski, Gregory S. Parks
Implicit Bias, Election '08, And The Myth Of A Post-Racial America, Jeffrey J. Rachlinski, Gregory S. Parks
Cornell Law Faculty Publications
The election of Barack Obama as the forty-fourth President of the United States signals that the traditional modes of thinking about race in America are outdated. Commentators and pundits have begun to suggest that the election of a black man to the nation's highest office means that the United States has entered a post-racial era in which civil rights laws are becoming unnecessary. Although President Obama's election means that explicit, open anti-black racism has largely faded, an analysis of the campaign's rhetoric and themes suggests that unconscious racism is alive and well. Rather than suggest a retreat from traditional civil …
"We Are On The Move", Gerald Torres
"We Are On The Move", Gerald Torres
Cornell Law Faculty Publications
Professor Torres explores the idea of "racial literacy " by working through a series of examples where being able to "read" race mattered. Reading race correctly helped policy makers and advocates understand the real problem and helped craft solutions that were generally beneficial by addressing structural defects not just individual bad actors.
