Spiritual Liberation Or Religious Discipline: The Religious Right’S Effects On Incarcerated Women, Eva Delair
Scripps Senior Theses
The history of the prison system in the US is inextricably linked to Christianity. Penitentiary shares its root word, penitence, with repentance. Quakers and Congregationalists started the very first prisons because they viewed the corporal punishment of that time to be cruel (Graber 20). Even today, prisons are required to hire chaplains to make sure incarcerated people have the freedom to practice religion inside of the prison. The largest volunteer group serving incarcerated people is Prison Fellowship, an arm of the Religious Right which began in the 1970s and is now the largest faith based group of its kind1 (Prison …

White Flight And Urban Decay In Suburban Chicago, Lindsey Haines
White Flight And Urban Decay In Suburban Chicago, Lindsey Haines
Honors Projects
White flight and urban decay are issues typically analyzed in the context of the inner-city. This study builds on previous literature to test whether these phenomena have affected the Chicago suburbs in the same way as other urban areas. In particular, this study focuses on the effects of changes in racial composition, household income, and the age of the housing stock on changes in home values, the vacancy rate, the homeownership rate, unemployment, the single parent household rate, and the college completion rate. Overall the study supports the theories of white flight and filtering in the suburban Chicago context. The …

The Effect Of Economic Conditions, Gender Equality, And Women’S Empowerment On Cross-National Trends In Rape, Meghan Lynn Rogers
The Effect Of Economic Conditions, Gender Equality, And Women’S Empowerment On Cross-National Trends In Rape, Meghan Lynn Rogers
Theses
The purpose of the study is to examine changes in rape over time in the United States and Europe. Little previous research examines changes in rape trends over time, or compares rape trends across nations. I propose that economic conditions, gender equality, and empowerment of women can explain the changes in rape over time in the United States and Europe. To test this research question, a GLS cross-sectional time-series analysis was conducted of rape rates in the United States and thirteen European nations from 1990 to 2003. Results show that consumer confidence, unemployment, gender development, human development, and gender empowerment …

An Exploration Of The Influences Of Race, Class And Gender Identity On The Help-Seeking Behavior Of Lgbtq Survivors Of Violence, Xavier Guadalupe
Theses and Dissertations
Without a doubt, violence continues to be a brutal reality in our society. It reaches and affects millions across our nation and around the world. For centuries, scholars, researchers and academics have studied and analyzed the existence of violence in many capacities. While violence affects every individual, group, and community the dynamics and the realties that are carried out vary tremendously across race, income levels, gender, gender identity and expression, sexual orientation and national origin to name a few. The existence, impact and repercussions of violence in different communities carry varying meanings, perceptions and significance. This paper explores the influences …

Changing Winds: National Politics And Its Role In Funding For Rural Development In Alaska, Edwina C. Langenberg-Miller
Changing Winds: National Politics And Its Role In Funding For Rural Development In Alaska, Edwina C. Langenberg-Miller
Rural Development
The combination of the election of Senator Mark Begich in 2008, an increased emphasis on transparency, and a growing movement away from congressionally-directed spending (earmarks) and toward competitively-awarded and formula-based funding has the potential to drastically reduce federal funding for rural development in Alaska. Alaska's basic needs for infrastructure remain equivalent to those of some of the least developed nations of the world. Rural development projects in Alaska, however, fight an uphill battle for federal funding because rural populations are low in numbers and remote, costs of rural development in Alaska far exceed similar projects in the "lower 48," and …
The Effect Of Residency Requirements On Police As Capable Guardians, David Pritchard
The Effect Of Residency Requirements On Police As Capable Guardians, David Pritchard
Theses and Dissertations
The debate over police residency requirements dates to the advent of the modern police force in the early 19th Century. Many reasons have been put forth regarding these requirements, from effectiveness to availability to economic impact. On the other hand, opponents have argued that quality of life, employee retention, and applicant pool should be considered in the decision to have residency mandates. This study seeks to determine the effectiveness of resident police officers within the context of the Routine Activities Theory. In particular, it considered whether police officers are more capable guardians when they live in the jurisdictions where they …
Assessing The Impact Of Police-Order-Maintenance Teams On Crime: An Application Of The ‘Broken Windows’ Hypothesis, Steven A. Pace, William Sousa, Dan Mcgrath
Assessing The Impact Of Police-Order-Maintenance Teams On Crime: An Application Of The ‘Broken Windows’ Hypothesis, Steven A. Pace, William Sousa, Dan Mcgrath
Graduate Research Symposium (2010 - 2017)
High levels of violent crime and disorder characterize certain neighborhoods of northwest Las Vegas. In April 2009, collaboration between academics and police personnel announced the deployment of a police order-maintenance unit designed to reduce minor and major offenses in these areas. Drawing on the Broken Windows hypothesis, the unit combined a detailed crime analysis with extensive police efforts to address specific community problems. This paper discusses the implementation and impact of the police order-maintenance unit during its operation.
Blameworthiness And Dangerousness: An Analysis Of Violent Female Capital Offenders In The United States And China, Courtney Lahaie
Blameworthiness And Dangerousness: An Analysis Of Violent Female Capital Offenders In The United States And China, Courtney Lahaie
Graduate Research Symposium (2010 - 2017)
The United States and China represent two of the leading nations that retain the death penalty in both law and practice. Research suggests that judges’ sentencing decisions are based primarily on two factors, blameworthiness and dangerousness. Studies involving gender and sentencing in capital punishment cases tend to provide inconsistent findings. The current study uses case narratives to examine the direct and conjunctive effects of various factors on the sentencing decisions of violent female capital offenders in the United States and China. The findings suggest that the concepts of blameworthiness and dangerousness are distinctly defined in the United States and China. …

Deaths In Custody In Nevada, 2001-2006, Brian R. Brehman, Terance D. Miethe, Timothy C. Hart
Graduate Research Symposium (2010 - 2017)
A large number of prisoners die each year while under the custody of the state. These deaths include prisoners who are executed under state laws and other deaths in custody from a variety of causes. Nationally, 18,550 individuals died in the custody of a state prison between 2001 and 2006. This state data brief examines deaths in custody in Nevada prisons and jails and compares them to national averages. This report summarizes the prevalence rates for deaths in custody, changes in these custody deaths over time, the cause of these deaths, and compares custody deaths in Clark County jail to …
