Injustice And Graphic Design: The Problem Of Human Trafficking And Slavery And The Role Of The Graphic Designer, Jordan E. Chen Apr 2010

Injustice And Graphic Design: The Problem Of Human Trafficking And Slavery And The Role Of The Graphic Designer, Jordan E. Chen

Senior Honors Theses

For my senior honors thesis I am creating an advertising campaign for a non-profit organization called Faceless International. Faceless works to rehabilitate victims of human trafficking and also educate children so they are less likely to be tricked into being trafficked and kept as slaves. I am creating a postcard-sized handout, a brochure/poster, an identity package for the director (consisting of a letterhead, envelope, and business card), and a t-shirt. The written portion of my thesis explores the tragedy of human trafficking and discusses why organizations like International Justice Mission and Faceless International are needed in our world today, what …

The Library As A Student Research Site, Anna Gold Apr 2010

The Library As A Student Research Site, Anna Gold

Robert E. Kennedy Library

Studying students to understand how they find and use information is one of several newer assessment strategies that shift the focus of library research from the library to the user, with sometimes surprising results. Another way that libraries can engage in user-centered research is to offer the library as a student research site. The Kennedy Library at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo has been used in recent years as a research site for undergraduate students, including individuals, groups, and courses, in fields that include architecture, business, and computer science. A case study will illustrate how a faculty member and students …

Utilizing Interactive Whiteboards In The Classroom, Jeffrey Decker

Mathematical and Computing Sciences Masters

Using interactive white boards in the classroom has been determined as one of the means in which an increase in student achievement and motivation. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between the integration of interactive white boards and student achievement in different content areas. Six high school level classrooms with varying content areas and their use of interactive white board technology were utilized in this study. Information on individual student motivation compared among different classrooms, both with and without interactive whiteboards, qualitative survey responses from instructors' and students' views, as well as looking at different student assessments compared to …

High-Tech View: The Use Of Immersive Virtual Environments In Jury Trials, Carrie Leonetti, Jeremy Bailenson Apr 2010

High-Tech View: The Use Of Immersive Virtual Environments In Jury Trials, Carrie Leonetti, Jeremy Bailenson

Marquette Law Review

This Article makes both empirical and normative claims about the admissibility of immersive-virtual-environment evidence during a jury trial. The empirical claim is that IVE evidence will inevitably enter the American courtroom; the normative one is that this inevitable entrance is a positive development for the jury’s search for truth. It argues that, while the digital projections created by an IVE are not perfectly realistic representations of the objects that they seek to recreate, an IVE can, nonetheless, be a fair and accurate representation of the scene that it represents, as long as an expert witness could lay the appropriate foundation …

Forest Story Cards, A Visual Survey Tool, Sanford A. Smith Apr 2010

Forest Story Cards, A Visual Survey Tool, Sanford A. Smith

Journal of Extension

A visual survey tool for initiating dialogue about forests with adults and youth, Forest Story Cards, is described. The cards include 52 selected photographs related to forests, a wild card, and instructions. Field-testing by natural resource professionals, Extension educators, and forestry volunteers indicate the photographic cards help individuals communicate and make associations about their life experiences, concerns, and hopes for their own forests and for forests in general. Visual survey techniques such as Forest Story Cards hold promise for use in other educational situations when addressing issues and topics about which the individuals involved lack shared background or experience.

Simplifying Complex Information Structures: The Application Of Archiving And Mapping Strategies In The Design Of Prescription Drug Labeling, Sheetal Alreja Apr 2010

Simplifying Complex Information Structures: The Application Of Archiving And Mapping Strategies In The Design Of Prescription Drug Labeling, Sheetal Alreja

Theses

Information Design involves finding meaningful solutions to raw and complex data that is difficult to understand. Archiving and Mapping are approached as means of information design during the course of this thesis study. The process of Archiving involves collection, documentation and organization of data. Traditional Archiving methods are studied along with analyzing organization of large amounts of information in the form of web sites, publications, annual reports and reference books. The approach towards Mapping is not limited to just geographic contexts. Maps can be visualized in the form of an idea, metaphor or process. Graphic Design elements such as color, …

Randomized Kaczmarz Solver For Noisy Linear Systems, Deanna Needell Mar 2010

Randomized Kaczmarz Solver For Noisy Linear Systems, Deanna Needell

CMC Faculty Publications and Research

The Kaczmarz method is an iterative algorithm for solving systems of linear equations Ax=b. Theoretical convergence rates for this algorithm were largely unknown until recently when work was done on a randomized version of the algorithm. It was proved that for overdetermined systems, the randomized Kaczmarz method converges with expected exponential rate, independent of the number of equations in the system. Here we analyze the case where the system Ax=b is corrupted by noise, so we consider the system where Ax is approximately b + r where r is an arbitrary error vector. We prove that in this noisy version, …
