Conscription And Crime: Evidence From The Argentine Draft Lottery, Sebastian Galiani, Martín A. Rossi, Ernesto Schargrodsky May 2010

Conscription And Crime: Evidence From The Argentine Draft Lottery, Sebastian Galiani, Martín A. Rossi, Ernesto Schargrodsky

Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers

We estimate the causal effect of mandatory participation in the military service on the involvement in criminal activities. We exploit the random assignment of young men to military service in Argentina through a draft lottery to identify this causal effect. Using a unique set of administrative data that includes draft eligibility, participation in the military service, and criminal records, we find that participation in the military service increases the likelihood of developing a criminal record in adulthood. The effects are not only significant for the cohorts that performed military service during war times, but also for those that provided service …

Religious Organizations, Gilat Levy, Ronny Razin

Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers

We propose a model of religious organizations which relies on the ability of such organi-zations and personal utility shocks. We show how religious organizations arise endogenously and characterize their features. Specifically, we find that members of the religious organization share similar beliefs and are more likely to cooperate with one another in social interactions. We identify a "spiritual" as well as a "material" payoff for members of the religious organization. Our results explain and shed light on empirical phenomena such as the effects of secularization and economic development on religious beliefs and participation, the relation between the size of the …

With the world getting more and more digitized, social networking has also found a place in the cyber world. These social networking sites (SNSs) which enable people to socialize, and build and maintain relationships are attracting attention of all kinds of people such as teens, adults, sports persons, and even businesses. But these SNSs are also getting unwanted attention from people like sexual predators, spammers, and people involved in criminal and illegal activities. This paper talks about SNSs and how these sites are exploited for criminal or illegal activity. The SNSs are discussed in detail with respect to user profiles, …

Predictors Of Completion In A Batterer Treatment Program: The Effects Of Referral Source Supervision, Sara J. Barber, Emily M. Wright May 2010

Predictors Of Completion In A Batterer Treatment Program: The Effects Of Referral Source Supervision, Sara J. Barber, Emily M. Wright

Criminology and Criminal Justice Faculty Publications

Domestic violence offenders who are court mandated to attend a batterer treatment program are more likely to complete treatment than offenders who voluntarily attend. However, few studies have examined the amount or severity of referral source supervision and its effect on treatment completion. This study uses data from three referral sources in South Carolina (i.e., pretrial intervention, criminal domestic violence court, and summary court) to determine whether higher levels of monitoring during a 26-week hybrid cognitive-behavioral batterer treatment program increase the likelihood of completion among batterers. Results indicate that increased supervision exercised over the clients by the referral source during …

Strengthening Your Faith Community Through Organizing, Richard L. Wood May 2010

Strengthening Your Faith Community Through Organizing, Richard L. Wood

Sociology Faculty and Staff Publications

In speaking around the country in 2001 about how faith-based community organizing influences power in American cities, I was frequently asked by key funders and participants from PICO and other organizing networks what impact organizing has on the diverse faith communities that sponsor it. During 2002-2004, I worked with Interfaith Funders to answer this question, through a research project called the Congregational Development Research Study (CDRS, with major funding from the Ford Foundation). I here briefly describe the findings of that study as they relate to the PICO National Network.

The Nexus Between The Ballot And Bullet: Popular Support For The Pkk And Post-Election Violence In Turkey, Nadir Gergin May 2010

The Nexus Between The Ballot And Bullet: Popular Support For The Pkk And Post-Election Violence In Turkey, Nadir Gergin

Theses and Dissertations

This study examines the relationship between popular support for the Kurdish Worker’s Party (PKK), which is an ethnic insurgent and terrorist organization mainly operating in Turkey, and its terrorist activities during the pre-and post-election periods in Turkey . Popular support has been measured through popular votes for the political party affiliated with the PKK in 1999 general, 2004 local and 2007 general elections. Two leading theories of social movements, Resource Mobilization Theory (RMT) and Relative Deprivation Theory (RD), were used as theoretical approach. The study uses secondary data and constructs a longitudinal design. An advanced statistical analysis technique, a generalized …

Geos: A Service For The Management Of Geo-Social Information In A Distributed System, Paul Anderson May 2010

Geos: A Service For The Management Of Geo-Social Information In A Distributed System, Paul Anderson

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Applications and services that take advantage of social data usually infer social relationships using information produced only within their own context, using a greatly simplified representation of users' social data. We propose to combine social information from multiple sources into a directed and weighted social multigraph in order to enable novel socially-aware applications and services. We present GeoS, a geo-social data management service which implements a representative set of social inferences and can run on a decentralized system. We demonstrate GeoS' potential for social applications on a collection of social data that combines collocation information and Facebook friendship declarations from …

The Imperative For Achieving Diversity, Ellen Hazelkorn May 2010

The Imperative For Achieving Diversity, Ellen Hazelkorn

Other resources

Diversity is seen as a basic norm of higher education policy because it best meets educational and labour market. This presentation examines the concept of diversity as it applies to institutional mission and differentiation, and to research. It argues that in response to rankings and the global financial crisis, policymakers are tending to make a simple correlation between rankings, elite higher education and global competitiveness. There is increasing emphasis on selective excellence and focusing on the 'economic value of research outputs'. However, pursuit of ‘world class’ is skewing policy and institutional priorities.

Mitt Romney’S Religion: A Five Factor Model For Analysis Of Media Representation Of Mormon Identity, Sherry Baker, Joel Campbell May 2010

Mitt Romney’S Religion: A Five Factor Model For Analysis Of Media Representation Of Mormon Identity, Sherry Baker, Joel Campbell

Faculty Publications

Mitt Romney’s religion accounted for 50% of all religion-related presidential primary campaign stories in 2007, and 30% of Romney’s total media coverage focused on his Mormon faith. This article reviews that coverage and considers it within the larger historical context of the complex relationship between media and Mormonism throughout the 180-year history of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. A factorial model (the first in the area of Mormon Media Studies) is proposed by which to document and analyze the wider societal influences that are reflected in media representation of Mormon identity. The model’s 5 factors include the …
