Women, Regional Radio And Development: The Role Of North Upper Egypt Radio In The Struggle Of Females Towards Development In North Upper Egypt, Haidi M. K. Abdel Rahman

Theses and Dissertations

This study examines the role of regional media in development. Using North Upper Egypt as an example, the thesis illustrates how a regional medium with a development mission might be able to contribute to the development of women in North Upper Egypt. The thesis inquiry required the search for more information than published about Egyptian radio stations. It also surveys the role of North Upper Egypt Radio Station in developing rural and urban female listeners at all levels.

Canadian Refugee Resettlement: A Case Study Of The Process Of Policy-Making For Iraqi Refugees, Mia Gauthier Jun 2010

Canadian Refugee Resettlement: A Case Study Of The Process Of Policy-Making For Iraqi Refugees, Mia Gauthier

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this research is to understand how the Canadian government came to decide when was the opportune time to begin the resettlement of Iraqis, what magnitude these resettlement operations would take, and whom, amongst the millions of Iraqis displaced by the war following the 2003 U.S.-led invasion, would be selected for resettlement to Canada. The research identifies different sets of influences on the policy-making process related to the resettlement of Iraqi refugees to Canada, and explores how these resettlement policies were initiated, developed, implemented, and shaped over time. A literature review is undertaken on the history of the …

Coptic Orthodox Christianity: Religious Transformation In The Time Of Neoliberalism, Marsil Kalliney Jun 2010

Coptic Orthodox Christianity: Religious Transformation In The Time Of Neoliberalism, Marsil Kalliney

Theses and Dissertations

While the Coptic Orthodox Church celebrates a unique historical trajectory, contemporary Copts' conceptualization of religious discourses reflects a transformation impacted by political and economic global forces. The international prevailing ideological paradigm of neoliberalism is highlighted by the shift from governments into individuals through economic and political practices. This thesis illustrates the transformation using an example of a Coptic charity organization redefining itself to be a non-governmental organization (NGO) in response to the dominant paradigm of neoliberalism. The organization is a microcosm reflecting global financial and political forces as well as members' religious beliefs as they relate to these global forces. …

Knowing The Ropes: Autonomy In The Everyday Life Of Egyptian Married Women, Neveen Bashier Jun 2010

Knowing The Ropes: Autonomy In The Everyday Life Of Egyptian Married Women, Neveen Bashier

Theses and Dissertations

The rationale behind this thesis has been to construct different frames of married women's autonomy in Egypt. Such frames are meant to describe different patterns of behavior in the everyday life of Egyptian married women. In order to construct such frames, a research has been conducted and twenty five in-depth interviews alongside a discussion group with five participants were held with self identified Egyptian married women. The research sought answers to questions on married women's definition of autonomy, how it is expressed in the various roles they play in their everyday lives, the constraints facing such autonomy in married women's …

Tomorrow's Doctors And Today's Changes: Neo-Liberal Discourses And The Daily Practices Of Medical Interns At A State University Hospital In Cairo, Salma Shokralla Jun 2010

Tomorrow's Doctors And Today's Changes: Neo-Liberal Discourses And The Daily Practices Of Medical Interns At A State University Hospital In Cairo, Salma Shokralla

Theses and Dissertations

As the State shifts towards liberalization policies in the health sector, debates surrounding the outcomes of medical encounters came to the core of public debate. To understand changes that are influencing medical encounters and their outcomes, this study focused on the socialization process medical students go through to become practicing physicians. A public university hospital (Al Kasr Al Ainy) where medical students get their practical training was the focus of this study. Courses on physician-patient encounters, newly implemented under the government's education reform plan, were analyzed as an example of how discourses are produced to shift the responsibility of public …

Philosophy Of Modernity And Development In Jamaica, Novella Z. Keith, Nelson W. Keith Jun 2010

Philosophy Of Modernity And Development In Jamaica, Novella Z. Keith, Nelson W. Keith

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In their article "Philosophy of Modernity and Development in Jamaica" Novella Z. Keith and Nelson W. Keith postulate that a combined philosophico-practical inquiry is necessary to reduce the systemic asymmetries found in the North-South divide and to promote global interdependence. Proceeding from a deconstruction of European-inflected modernity, Keith and Keith sketch an alternative epistemology of uncertainty and unknowability and illustrate aspects of these epistemologies in theories and practices of modernization and its counter movements, dependency, and underdevelopment while also using them to discuss current practices of an NGO they created, Edu-Tourism , to bridge global divides as experienced in Jamaica. …

Haitian Zombie, Myth, And Modern Identity, Kette Thomas Jun 2010

Haitian Zombie, Myth, And Modern Identity, Kette Thomas

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In her article "Haitian Zombie, Myth, and Modern Identity" Kette Thomas analyzes texts by Zora Neale Hurston, Alfred Metraux, and Wade Davis. In these narratives we are re-introduced to the zombie not as a metaphor for lost consciousness, but, rather, as a common system that replaces personal subjectivity with an influence alien to our natural development. The discourse on subjectivity has become a central focus in the modern era but attention to fiction in "third world" cultures is neglected because they are studied almost exclusively through historical, political, sociological, or anthropological lenses or because their collective identities leads scholars to …

Agricultural Extension Agents' Perceptions Of Effective Teaching Strategies For Adult Learners In The Master Beef Producer Program, Robert Strong, Amy Harder, Hannah Carter Jun 2010

Agricultural Extension Agents' Perceptions Of Effective Teaching Strategies For Adult Learners In The Master Beef Producer Program, Robert Strong, Amy Harder, Hannah Carter

Journal of Extension

The purpose of the study reported here was to explore and describe how Extension agents selected teaching strategies for adult audiences. Andragogy is hypotheses concerning the attributes of adult learners (Knowles, Swanson, & Holton III, 2005). Extension agents responsible for teaching the Master Beef Producer (MBP) program were purposively selected for this study. Using qualitative research, results of the study show that county agricultural Extension agents felt hands-on instruction was the most effective teaching strategy for cattlemen. This article highlights the need for Extension to provide potential and current agents with formal education and professional development in andragogy.

Trust In Others: Does Religion Matter?, Joseph P. Daniels, Marc Von Der Ruhr Jun 2010

Trust In Others: Does Religion Matter?, Joseph P. Daniels, Marc Von Der Ruhr

Economics Faculty Research and Publications

Though the recent literature offers intuitively appealing bases for, and evidence of, a linkage among religious beliefs, religious participation and economic outcomes, evidence on a relationship between religion and trust is mixed. By allowing for an attendance effect, disaggregating Protestant denominations, and using a more extensive data set, probit models of the General Social Survey (GSS), 1975 through 2000, show that black Protestants, Pentecostals, fundamentalist Protestants, and Catholics, trust others less than individuals who do not claim a preference for a particular denomination. For conservative denominations the effect of religion is through affiliation, not attendance. In contrast, liberal Protestants trust …

Stressors And Coping Mechanisms Of Married Female Physicians : A Qualitative Review, Eva Marie Starner Jun 2010

Stressors And Coping Mechanisms Of Married Female Physicians : A Qualitative Review, Eva Marie Starner

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Female physicians live and work in a very complex world fraught with professional demands and personal challenges. Twenty-seven married female physicians were interviewed for this study to assess demands and stressors endemic to them and to determine how they manage them. The breadth of this study looked at the demands and stressors of the female physician from the perspective of her work environment, home and family responsibilities, parenting responsibilities, and self-imposed demands in her perceived roles as a working wife and mother. Two main categories emerged during the development of grounded theory: System Challenge and System Adaptation. Additionally, work demands, …

The Political Mobilization Of Corporate Directors: Socio-Economic Correlates Of Affiliation To European Pressure Groups, Matthew Bond, Siana Glouharova, Nicholas Harrigan Jun 2010

The Political Mobilization Of Corporate Directors: Socio-Economic Correlates Of Affiliation To European Pressure Groups, Matthew Bond, Siana Glouharova, Nicholas Harrigan

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

Business has played a central role in the debate over Britain's place in the European Union. This paper examines the socio-economic characteristics of directors of Britain's largest corporations who affiliated either to Business for Sterling or Britain in Europe. It reports associations between directors' social backgrounds and their probabilities of affiliation. Elite university education, club membership, wealth and multiple directorships were all associated with higher propensities to affiliate. The associations are consistent with the idea that directors' social resources allow them to overcome collective action problems as well as supplying them with the motivations to affiliate. They also indicated that …

Who Is James Bond? The Dark Triad As An Agentic Social Style, Peter K. Jonason, Norman P. Li, Emily A. Teicher Jun 2010

Who Is James Bond? The Dark Triad As An Agentic Social Style, Peter K. Jonason, Norman P. Li, Emily A. Teicher

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

If the Dark Triad are costly traits for individuals to have and individuals are predisposed to avoid interacting with selfish individuals, how do those who have those traits extract resources from their environment? We contend that a specific set of personality traits will enable individuals to do so. We showed that those who are disagreeable, extraverted, open, and have high self-esteem along with low levels of neuroticism and conscientiousness score high on the Dark Triad (Study 1: N = 216). Additionally, having a more individualistic and competitive approach to others and not a strongly altruistic orientation will also help those …

Income, Endogenous Market Structure And Innovation, Mei Lin, Shaojin Li, Andrew B. Whinston Jun 2010

Income, Endogenous Market Structure And Innovation, Mei Lin, Shaojin Li, Andrew B. Whinston

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

We investigate the effect of income distribution on R&D in a dynamic framework. Our model captures both the infinite R&D race among heterogeneous innovators and a market where successful innovators generate revenues. The market structure of successful innovations is endogenous – firms produce vertically differentiated substitute goods and compete in price. Based on firms' equilibrium market revenues, we derive numerical solutions of the Markov perfect equilibrium innovation rate of the dynamic problem. A key insight in our results is that explicitly modeling price competition and the market structure plays an important role in evaluating the impact of rising income inequality …

Stevent: Spatio-Temporal Event Model For Social Network Discovery, Hady W. Lauw, Ee Peng Lim, Hwee Hwa Pang, Teck-Tim Tan Jun 2010

Stevent: Spatio-Temporal Event Model For Social Network Discovery, Hady W. Lauw, Ee Peng Lim, Hwee Hwa Pang, Teck-Tim Tan

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Spatio-temporal data concerning the movement of individuals over space and time contains latent information on the associations among these individuals. Sources of spatio-temporal data include usage logs of mobile and Internet technologies. This article defines a spatio-temporal event by the co-occurrences among individuals that indicate potential associations among them. Each spatio-temporal event is assigned a weight based on the precision and uniqueness of the event. By aggregating the weights of events relating two individuals, we can determine the strength of association between them. We conduct extensive experimentation to investigate both the efficacy of the proposed model as well as the …

Mining Antagonistic Communities From Social Networks, Kuan Zhang, David Lo, Ee Peng Lim Jun 2010

Mining Antagonistic Communities From Social Networks, Kuan Zhang, David Lo, Ee Peng Lim

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

During social interactions in a community, there are often sub-communities that behave in opposite manner. These antagonistic sub-communities could represent groups of people with opposite tastes, factions within a community distrusting one another, etc. Taking as input a set of interactions within a community, we develop a novel pattern mining approach that extracts for a set of antagonistic sub-communities. In particular, based on a set of user specified thresholds, we extract a set of pairs of sub-communities that behave in opposite ways with one another. To prevent a blow up in these set of pairs, we focus on extracting a …

Noxious Odor In Residential Environments : Coping In Reactive And Proactive Ways In Three New Jersey Communities, Maria Beatriz Yabur May 2010

Noxious Odor In Residential Environments : Coping In Reactive And Proactive Ways In Three New Jersey Communities, Maria Beatriz Yabur

Dissertations

Currently little is known about the effects of noxious odor on people's daily lives. This lack of knowledge is apparent in the rules and regulations concerning odor. This dissertation addresses this lack of knowledge by looking at the effects of current noxious odor on residents' lives in three residential communities in northern New Jersey: West Caldwell, Newark's North Ward and Garfield- Lafayette in Jersey City. The research examines the coping process residents adopt to deal with this environmental annoyance.

In this study I explore two ways residents cope with odor: reactively (trying to keep the odor out of their homes) …

"In My Church We Don't Believe In Homosexuals": Queer Identity And Dominant Culture In Three Texts Of The Aids Era, Steven Cooper

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

My thesis seeks to examine the relationship that exists between queer selfidentification and heterosexual hegemonic/heteronormative power in three works of and about the AIDS era. Working from feminist and queer theory perspectives, I first chart the way in which a problematic identity—be that identity a non-identity of utter invisibility, a sick identity, a dangerous identity, or (most commonly) an identity of utter hedonism disconnected from any notions of attachment, affection, or love beyond the physical sexual act—has been and is still wholly adopted by some. I do this principally with a close reading of Renaud Camus' 1981 novel Tricks, …

Experiences Of Pregnancy, Childbirth And Post-Partem Period In Urban And Suburban Immigrant Pakistani Women, Rubab I. Qureshi May 2010

Experiences Of Pregnancy, Childbirth And Post-Partem Period In Urban And Suburban Immigrant Pakistani Women, Rubab I. Qureshi

Dissertations

A body of research suggests that immigrants arrive in the U.S. in good health, a healthy immigrant effect. As immigrants acculturate and absorb dominant cultural norms (measured by proxy variables such as language preference, employment, smoking and alcohol consumption), their health status deteriorates. There is a need to understand how immigrants adapt to a changed social and cultural environment and how this may influence health.

A study of pregnancy, childbirth and the postpartum period in immigrant Pakistani women living in New Jersey explored the interface of culture, immigration and health. The study employed a three pronged approach. Census data were …
