Defining The Protected Groups In The Law Of Genocide: Learning From The Experience Of The International Criminal Tribunal For Rwanda, Alison Hopkins
Defining The Protected Groups In The Law Of Genocide: Learning From The Experience Of The International Criminal Tribunal For Rwanda, Alison Hopkins
Dalhousie Journal of Legal Studies
April 6, 2009, marked the fifteenth anniversary of the beginning of the Rwandan Genocide. In 1994, international outcry was not immediately forthcoming, but the commitment made by the United Nations Security Council for an international criminal tribunal to bring those who were responsible for the genocide to justice was an important statement condemning the actions of many Rwandans. The International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda (“ICTR”) had many legal issues to face, but the most important, by far, was an exploration of the law of genocide at international law. The ICTR was the first international court to try an individual for …

Lesbian Mothers & Gay Fathers: Overt And Subconscious Homophobic Biases Concerning Parental Fitness, Jude Hall
Dalhousie Journal of Legal Studies
Disputes in family law, particularly in child custody and access cases, often involve emotionally charged parties. These parties, when pitted against one other in an adversarial system, often seek to discredit, impugn or malign the opposing party in an effort to influence an outcome in their favour. The judiciary, as the triers of fact and arbiters in these cases, must consider the often widely divergent positions of each party, and apply an impartial analysis and judgment that considers the best interests of the children at the centre of these disputes. Despite the presumption of judicial impartiality, it is reasonable to …

Actor-Network Theory Of Cosmopolitan Education, Hiro Saito
Actor-Network Theory Of Cosmopolitan Education, Hiro Saito
Research Collection School of Social Sciences
In the past, philosophers discussed cosmopolitanism as a normative ideal of allegiance to humanity as a whole. A debate among social theorists, however, has examined cosmopolitanism as an incipient empirical phenomenon: an orientation of openness to foreign others and cultures. This paper introduces actor-network theory to elaborate the social-theoretical conception of cosmopolitanism. In light of the actor-network theory of cosmopolitanism, the paper proposes cosmopolitan education that aims to foster in students three dispositions: to extend attachments to foreign people and objects; to understand transnational connections in which their lives are embedded; and to act on these attachments and understandings to …

Latino Immigrants In The United States. Why The Suburbs? Why The Round Lake Area? A Case Study., Carolina Duque
Latino Immigrants In The United States. Why The Suburbs? Why The Round Lake Area? A Case Study., Carolina Duque
College of Liberal Arts & Social Sciences Theses and Dissertations
Since the last Census of 2000, Chicago has lost population overall, while the number of Latino immigrants has increased. In some municipalities in Cook, Lake, Kane, Kendall, Will, DuPage, and McHenry Counties, Latino immigration has increased dramatically, according to the American Community Survey estimates. Round Lake Beach ranks fourth in the size of its Latino population (49.5 percent) and first in Latino population growth (75.6 percent), between 2000 and 2008 (ACS) among the municipalities in the Chicago metropolitan area with the highest Latino population. Also, 10 percent of the Latino population in Lake County lives in Round Lake Beach. A …

Live And Let Die: Opiate Overdose Deaths In Chicago, Connie L. Smith
College of Liberal Arts & Social Sciences Theses and Dissertations
The use of narcotics, particularly opiates, is a health and social problem that is prevalent worldwide. One serious outcome of opiate overdose is death. Chicago is an important urban center that has serious opiate overdose-induced death problem that is not clearly understood. The purpose of this study is to better understand factors contributing to death from opiate overdoses, and specifically age at death. To acquire a better understanding of overdose-induced death a comprehensive database of opiate-related deaths in Chicago between 1999 and 2003 was created, including only opiate-overdose incidents. Blacks constituted the largest number of opiate-related deaths. However, we found …
The Role Of Culture In The Somatic Response Of Peer-Victimized Latino Youth, William Martinez
The Role Of Culture In The Somatic Response Of Peer-Victimized Latino Youth, William Martinez
College of Liberal Arts & Social Sciences Theses and Dissertations
There is emerging evidence that Latino youth report a higher prevalence of somatic complaints than children from other ethnic groups. Although culture has been implicated to explain these somatization differences, few studies have investigated the extent to which cultural factors actually influence the way Latino youth respo0nd to stressful events. The present study employed the problem suppression-facilitation model to posit that a Latino cultural orientation plays a moderational role in the relationship between peer victimization and physical symptoms. The present sample consisted of 134 Latino youth ranging in age from 10 to 14 years old. Analyses were conducted using structural …

Our Lady Of Help: Sex, Tourism And Transnational Movements In Copacabana, Thaddeus Blanchette, Ana Paula Da Silva
Wagadu: A Journal of Transnational Women's & Gender Studies
Analysis of sexual tourism has generally concentrated on the subjugation of women as devalued objects of exchange shuffling between dominant and subordinate national universes. Basing our analysis on ethnographic fieldwork among tourists and prostitutes in the Copacabana neighborhood of Rio de Janeiro, we seek to demonstrate how women's ability to create and manipulate symbols enables the international movement of both Brazilian women and foreign men. This article recovers the agency of Brazilian women involved in tourism-related sex work, situating them as neither victims nor victimizers, but as active participants in the creation and management of both affective and commercial sexual …
Social Class And The College Experience Of Students In Kentucky: An Exploratory Study, Ainsley Lambert
Social Class And The College Experience Of Students In Kentucky: An Exploratory Study, Ainsley Lambert
Faculty Research at Morehead State University
A great deal of research in higher education is focused on difficulties that pertain specifically to lower income students. Many of these studies use qualitative methods and small samples from a single institution. This study uses quantitative methods and a stratified sample of 388 students to examine the effects of social class on students' experiences at four colleges in Kentucky. The results support the notion that lower income students feel marginalized, isolated, and "imposters" at college.

Architecture As An Educational Tool: University Of Connecticut School Of Architecture, Nicholas Mundo
Architecture Theses and Projects
I propose a school of architecture focused on holistic approach to design, taking consideration for the various related fields to offer a positive learning environment. The building itself will serve as an educational tool, providing space for interactions to occur and for visitors to understand the inner workings of a school of architecture. The building should represent a progressive thought process and promote creativity and collaboration.
Foster Care Placement, Poor Parenting, And Negative Outcomes Among Homeless Young Adults, Kimberly A. Tyler, Lisa A. Melander
Foster Care Placement, Poor Parenting, And Negative Outcomes Among Homeless Young Adults, Kimberly A. Tyler, Lisa A. Melander
Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications
Although homeless youth with and without foster care histories both face adverse life circumstances, little is known about how these two groups compare in terms of their early histories and whether they face similar outcomes. As such, we compared those with and without a history of foster care placement to determine if the associations between a history of poor parenting and negative outcomes including depression, delinquency, physical and sexual victimization, and substance use, are similar for these two groups. The sample consisted of 172 homeless young adults from the Midwestern United States. Multivariate results revealed that among those previously in …

I Do Like Them But I Don’T Watch Them: Preschoolers’ Use Of Age As An Accounting Device In Consumption Evaluations, Olivia Freeman
I Do Like Them But I Don’T Watch Them: Preschoolers’ Use Of Age As An Accounting Device In Consumption Evaluations, Olivia Freeman
Conference papers
This paper derives from a broader study of children’s consumer culture, specifically an investigation into how preschoolers employ commercial discourses as the building blocks of social selves and relations. Age-based repertoires are found to colour the various discourses produced. ‘Age’ is conceptualised as something that is made sense of for and by children through their utilisation of toys, media, consumables and other commercial artefacts. The ‘choosing child’ is addressed in empirical terms to reveal the social significance of ‘doing’ consumption related evaluations in the focus group setting. A CA-informed discourse analytic approach is utilised to focus on one aspect of …

Where Next? A Study Of Work And Life Experiences Of Mature Students (Incl. Disadvantaged) In Three Higher Education Institutions, Aidan Kenny, Ted Fleming, Andrew Loxley, Fergal Finnegan
Other Resources
This study explores how graduates who entered college as mature students, and ‘disadvantaged’ mature students, view and value Higher Education after graduating with a primary degree. The study highlighted the limited usefulness of the concept of disadvantaged mature student and the findings of the research were not significantly different whether one was a mature student or a disadvantaged mature student. The rationale given by the state for supporting mature students in Higher Education (HE) is that it will yield economic and social benefits for both the students and society. As a consequence a wide range of access policies has been …

Faith-Based Charter Schools: An Idea Whose Time Is Unlikely To Come, Charles J. Russo, Gerald M. Cattaro
Educational Leadership Faculty Publications
In light of the legal and educational issues surrounding the status of religious charter schools, this article is divided into two parts. The first section reviews key litigation addressing the parameters of public aid to religiously affiliated nonpublic schools because these cases provide the necessary background should judicial challenges arise to faith-based charter schools. This first part of the paper also briefly reviews Supreme Court cases that forbid prayer and/or religious activities in school, an essential part of daily activities in religiously affiliated nonpublic schools that cannot continue in faith-based charter schools. The second part reviews educational and policy considerations …
Examining The Effects Of A National League For Nursing Core Competencies Workshop As An Intervention To Improve Nurse Faculty Practice, Robin Renata Wilson
Examining The Effects Of A National League For Nursing Core Competencies Workshop As An Intervention To Improve Nurse Faculty Practice, Robin Renata Wilson
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
Due to the complex challenges facing schools of nursing, a research study was implemented to introduce nurse faculty at one small rural northeastern Tennessee school of nursing to the NLN Core Competencies for Nurse Educators. Utilizing Kalb's Nurse Faculty Self-Evaluation Tool as a pre- and post-intervention test, 30 nurse faculty members participated in a quasi-experimental quantitative study and focus group interview. Clinical adjunct staff members participated in a test-retest process to establish tool reliability with somewhat mixed results. The overall study demonstrated that participants did exhibit a significant increase in knowledge and ability of the NLN Core Competencies for Nurse …
The (Mis)Categorization Of Sex In Anglo-American Cases Of Transsexual Marriage, John Parsi
The (Mis)Categorization Of Sex In Anglo-American Cases Of Transsexual Marriage, John Parsi
Michigan Law Review
The United States' promise to establish equality for all has been challenged by post-operative transsexuals seeking recognition in their acquired sex. The birth certificate is the legal gateway to changing other legal documents; but the process for changing the birth certificate varies widely from state to state. This lack of national uniformity makes post-operative transsexuals' recognition of their acquired sex complicated at best and impossible at worst. This Note details the legal progression from non-recognition to recognition of post-operative transsexuals' acquired sex in the United Kingdom and through the European Court of Human Rights. The Note goes on to explore …
