The 2007 General Elections In Nigeria: The Implication, Tolu Lawal, Oluwatoyin Abe
The 2007 General Elections In Nigeria: The Implication, Tolu Lawal, Oluwatoyin Abe
Academic Leadership: The Online Journal (2003-2012)
Democracy is said to be consolidated when all parties and individuals operate freely in a competitive and transparent environment; where stakeholders are guided by the rule of law, fair play and respect for group and individual rights. In political systems that approximate the ideal of democracy, the vote and election are meaningful. Elections place some individuals in power and reject the claims of others. Elections most typically are retrospective judgments on the conduct of the person and party that has held power. Those who have given satisfaction are confirmed in the office, those who are held responsible for the poor …
The Pretence Of Western Religion And Education In Nigeria: A Sociological Perspective., E. Okpilike
The Pretence Of Western Religion And Education In Nigeria: A Sociological Perspective., E. Okpilike
Academic Leadership: The Online Journal (2003-2012)
The main aim of the missionary education was to reach Christianity and thus convert all those who came within the four walls of the mission house. The British colonial Missions set up norms of religious education that progressively colonized the converts. Religious education primarily meant carrying out civic duties which enabled Nigerians to adopt the Western culture at the expense of their own. Prior to the coming of Western religions and education, Nigerians were very religious and also functional in their education. They acknowledged the presence of God in whatever they did. Their religion therefore cut across their entire lives …
The Reluctance Of Korean Education In The Face Of Change, Paul Jambor
The Reluctance Of Korean Education In The Face Of Change, Paul Jambor
Academic Leadership: The Online Journal (2003-2012)
It should first be stated that there are many bright students in the Korean educational system and Korea has produced great waves in the information technology fields and the Korean economy has leaped in bounds from the days of poverty and despair, following the Korean War, to the present days when Korea has proven itself to be a world class country with a world class economy. Nevertheless, the Korean system of education has seemingly lagged behind the advances the Korean information technology and semiconductor industries have enjoyed.
The Benefit Of Extracurricular Activities In High School: Involvement Enhances Academic Achievement And The Way Forward, Scott Turner
The Benefit Of Extracurricular Activities In High School: Involvement Enhances Academic Achievement And The Way Forward, Scott Turner
Academic Leadership: The Online Journal (2003-2012)
Research and data have been cited for over four decades about extra-curricular activities both sports and non sports related. Non sports related reference such activities as government, publication, journalism, math, and non specific leadership. Although there appears to be much data individually supporting each as a whole limited studies seem to be available. Depending on the region many schools urge and push sports as extra-curricular but do not necessarily promote sports for the benefit of the student, unfortunately more-so for the benefit of the school. Just as there were skeptics more than three generations ago today some still exist, stating …
Basic Social Values In Modern Nigerian School System, E. Okpilike
Basic Social Values In Modern Nigerian School System, E. Okpilike
Academic Leadership: The Online Journal (2003-2012)
A careful study of current event in modern Nigerian scene, religious institutions and of course all other sectors of the society clearly show that there is an unbalanced equation as regards the input and output of societal values in the school system. It is either there is a reduction of the necessary and compulsory societal values which must be introduced and imbibed in the school system or that there is a wanton disregard, disrespect, or negligence of the excellent societal values already introduced or made available to the Nigeria school system. In these two probabilities the society receives the blame …

Identifying Preconceptions Of Clinical Research In Swiss Allied Health And Nursing Researchers, Christophe Richoz, Jocelyne Depeyre
Identifying Preconceptions Of Clinical Research In Swiss Allied Health And Nursing Researchers, Christophe Richoz, Jocelyne Depeyre
Internet Journal of Allied Health Sciences and Practice
Purpose: In the context of training health professionals in Switzerland in evidence-based practice, the preconceptions of active researchers might be playing a major role in the development of research methodologies within allied health and nursing professions (AHNP). The objective of this study was to identify the preconceptions (understanding of the meaning of clinical research) of researchers in AHNP at the Health Schools of the University of Applied Sciences, Western Switzerland (UASWS). Emerging theories were then discussed and challenged with available literature and participant profiles. Method: Anonymous semi-directed interviews of 20 researchers (internal and external to the university) arising from various …
Alcohol Prevalence And Attitudes Among Adults And Adolescents: Their Relation To Early Adolescent Alcohol Use In Rural Communities, Laura De Haan, Tina Boljevac
Alcohol Prevalence And Attitudes Among Adults And Adolescents: Their Relation To Early Adolescent Alcohol Use In Rural Communities, Laura De Haan, Tina Boljevac
University Faculty Publications and Creative Works
Although research has identified numerous neighborhood mechanisms influencing urban adolescent risk behaviors, less is known about how community contexts influence rural adolescents. This study explores perceived controls against adolescent drinking (i.e., tolerance of community adolescent alcohol use), adolescent perceptions of community supportiveness, and the prevalence of community alcohol use exhibited by adolescents and adults. Multilevel analyses were applied to 1,424 sixth- through eighth-grade students residing in 22 rural communities in the Northern Plains. Perceptions of tolerance, prevalence, and support from 790 parents, teachers, and community leaders were also collected. Analyses revealed that community supportiveness and controls against drinking reduced both …
The Emergence Of Hollywood Ghosts On Korean Tvs: The Right Of Publicity From The Global Market Perspective, Hyung Doo Nam
The Emergence Of Hollywood Ghosts On Korean Tvs: The Right Of Publicity From The Global Market Perspective, Hyung Doo Nam
Washington International Law Journal
The Right of Publicity is both a cultural based property and a corresponding right that protects the entertainment industry in the worldwide market. Discussion of the Right of Publicity, as a preliminary matter, must separate the policy-based approach of the United States from the doctrinal approaches. In order for this discussion to be carried out, the author considers the Right of Publicity with two new approaches. First, it is the author’s view that the Right of Publicity must be understood in the context of the entertainment market, considering the role of each player and their relationship to each other. Second, …

Reports
To insure quality assurance of the data collected among the various agencies, a training session is held each fall immediately prior to baywide TBISP monitoring. The goals of the session are to 1) determine the variability of the data collection among the agencies and to minimize this variability and 2) assess the repeatability of a seagrass investigator in determining species composition, abundance, density, and height. The purpose of this manual is to provide a seagrass researcher with information concerning TBISP protocols and results.

Human Rights Abusers, The Human Rights Council, And The Un, James Pattison
Human Rights Abusers, The Human Rights Council, And The Un, James Pattison
Human Rights & Human Welfare
The predecessor to the Human Rights Council, the Commission on Human Rights, had several notable failings. These included double standards in the selection of which states were to be subject to scrutiny, membership of the Commission by states notable for their egregious human rights records, and the shielding of the P5 members of the Security Council and their allies from criticism. The Human Rights Council, it was hoped, would avoid these flaws and, in doing so, push human rights further up the UN agenda. For instance, the General Assembly Resolution A/RES/60/251, which set up the Council, claimed that the Council’s …

The French Huissier As A Model For U.S. Civil Procedure Reform, Robert W. Emerson
The French Huissier As A Model For U.S. Civil Procedure Reform, Robert W. Emerson
University of Michigan Journal of Law Reform
Huissiers de justice serve multiple roles in the French legal system. One is that of a court officer who compiles dossiers (reports). In that role, the huissier is d'audiencier (literally translated as "hearing" or "assisting") and works directly for the court system itself.
The huissier's report remains alien to the American lawyer, who is steeped in notions of procedure and "testimonialism" and in principles of fairness which appear ancient, but are rather modern dissimulations of law and equity's rich history in the American tradition. An important aspect of most legal processes, the collection of data in preparation for litigation is …

Sports Facilities Development Towards Sustainable Community: A Case Study Of Kuala Lumpur, M. Barghchi, D. Omar, M.S. Aman
Research Publications (2006 to 2010)
Sports and sports facilities development have improved rapidly over the past years in Malaysia. However, such improvements are inadequate compared to the overall development of sports at international level. In recent years sport is getting more and more influential and it will continue to grow in importance, even for developing countries. Increase in the amount of public money being spent on sports facilities, at the same time, increase in the number of sports facilities as well as increasingly importance of sustainability necessitate demand to investigate issues surrounding sports facilities development especially in Kuala Lumpur as the regional and national centre …
The Role Of Endnote In The Process Of Reference Writing, A. Jahani
The Role Of Endnote In The Process Of Reference Writing, A. Jahani
Research Publications (2006 to 2010)
The aim of this study was to investigate the role of Endnote in the process of reference writing for a thesis. Endnote is software that everybody wants to write references in his research or thesis can use it. Since, there are many resources available because of advances in technology; it seems that Endnote will be used in the future by many researchers. Therefore, learning how to use this software can be a great help to all the researchers. But, the most important question is that: is there any significant relationship between using of Endnote and having better references in thesis? …

Financing The Next Silicon Valley, Darian M. Ibrahim
Financing The Next Silicon Valley, Darian M. Ibrahim
Faculty Publications
Silicon Valley’s success has led other regions to attempt their own high-tech transformations, yet most imitators have failed. Entrepreneurs may be in short supply in these “non-tech” regions, but some non-tech regions are home to high-quality entrepreneurs who relocate to Silicon Valley due to a lack of local financing for their start-ups. Non-tech regions must provide local finance to prevent entrepreneurial relocation and reap spillover benefits for their communities. This Article compares three possible sources of entrepreneurial finance—private venture capital, state-sponsored venture capital, and angel investor groups—and finds that angel groups have distinct advantages when it comes to funding innovation …

Agent-Based Modeling Of A Rental Market For Agricultural Land In The Argentine Pampas, Federico Bert, Guillermo Podestá, Santiago Rovere, Michael North, Angel Menéndez, Carlos Laciana, Charles Macal, Elke Weber, Pamela Sydelko
Agent-Based Modeling Of A Rental Market For Agricultural Land In The Argentine Pampas, Federico Bert, Guillermo Podestá, Santiago Rovere, Michael North, Angel Menéndez, Carlos Laciana, Charles Macal, Elke Weber, Pamela Sydelko
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
More than half of land in the Argentine Pampas is cropped by tenants. Theimportance of production on rented land motivated development of a LAnd Rental MArket(LARMA) model with endogenous formation of Land Rental Price (LRP). LARMA is a“hybrid” model that relies partly on easy-to-implement concepts from neoclassicaleconomics, but addresses drawbacks of this approach by being integrated into an agentbasedmodel that involves heterogeneous agents interacting in a dynamic environment.LRP formation assumes economic equilibrium: it is the price at which supply of rental landarea equals land demand. LRP depends on (a) the “willing to accept” price (WTAP) ofowners renting out land due …
The Use Of Experts’ Judgements To Assess Agri- Environmental Policies In The Venice Lagoon Watershed: A Bayesian Network Approach, Carpani Marta
The Use Of Experts’ Judgements To Assess Agri- Environmental Policies In The Venice Lagoon Watershed: A Bayesian Network Approach, Carpani Marta
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
Expert elicitation processes are increasingly applied in environmental management, to deal with complex phenomena characterised by lack or scarcity of data. Information obtained from carefully defined elicitation protocols can overcome uncertainty limits and support decision-making processes. The work illustrates the potentials of an innovative methodological framework, built upon the integrated use of specific tools, such as cognitive maps and Bayesian networks (BNs). The methodology was applied to the Venice Lagoon Watershed (VLW) case study, to assess agri-environmental measures, adopted to reduce nitrogen diffuse pollution of water. The framework consisted of two main phases, both built upon processes eliciting judgments from …
Modelling Trajectories Of Urban Shrinkage – Involvement And Role Of Local Stakeholders, A. Haase, Dagmar Haase, N. Kabisch, D. Rink, S. Kabisch
Modelling Trajectories Of Urban Shrinkage – Involvement And Role Of Local Stakeholders, A. Haase, Dagmar Haase, N. Kabisch, D. Rink, S. Kabisch
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
Shrinkage is understood as the process of population decline in an area which is the result of different processes such as deindustrialisation or demographic change. Local stakeholders in shrinking cities are faced with a contradictory task: they have to ensure a good living quality under conditions of shrinkage with fewer funds for this purpose and become increasingly dependent on external sources. Set against this background, the paper analyses different ways of how local stakeholders are involved in developing empirically founded rules to model local trajectories and decision-making heuristics of urban shrinkage. After the introduction of research objectives (1.1), the paper …
Parcel Subdivision Automation For Agent-Based Land Use Modelling, Rohan Wickramasuriya, Laurie Chisholm, Marji Puotinen, Nicholas Gill
Parcel Subdivision Automation For Agent-Based Land Use Modelling, Rohan Wickramasuriya, Laurie Chisholm, Marji Puotinen, Nicholas Gill
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
To a significant extent rural Australia is transforming into multifunctionallandscapes. Amenity migration (i.e. movement of people from metropolitan to ruralsettings) is a major driving force of this transition in many areas. However, the effects ofamenity migration on the receiving landscapes are not yet fully understood. Agent-basedland use modelling helps unravel the complex spatio-temporal relationships that affectlandscape response to change from amenity migration. A land subdivision module isessential for a complete agent-based land use model developed for these landscapesbecause the land sold to in-migrants are lots that are subdivided from much larger tracts. Inthis paper we describe a land subdivision automation …
