Examining The Relationship Between Criticism And Muscle Dysmorphia Symptomotology In Collegiate Men, Lauren M. Menees Jul 2010

Examining The Relationship Between Criticism And Muscle Dysmorphia Symptomotology In Collegiate Men, Lauren M. Menees

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

The goal of the current study was to examine the relationship between critical comments that men can recall others making about their bodies and their current level of Muscle Dysmorphia (MD) symptomotology. Participants (N = 118) were recruited via study board from a mid-Western university with a population of 20,674 students. The hypothesis of the current study was that men who can recall critical comments about their bodies will report more MD symptomotology than those who remembered no such comments. In addition, it was expected that out of those who recall critical comments, the more severe or threatening they remember …

The Effectiveness Of Suicide Terrorism, Jibey Asthappan Jul 2010

The Effectiveness Of Suicide Terrorism, Jibey Asthappan

Criminal Justice Faculty Publications

Killing more than 21,000 and injuring 50,000 between the years of 1981 and 2008, suicide bombs have proven to be an effective tactic and seem to be a growing trend. Terrorism is designed to cause panic, chaos and, optimally, publicity for a cause. Suicide terrorism is effective not only because of its lethal outcome; it also sends the message that the cause is so dire that death is a better outcome than life for the bomber. The level of commitment is astounding and largely considered rational.

Attitudes And Beliefs Of Marriage And Family Therapists Regarding Psychotropic Drugs And Therapy, Paul R. Springer, Steven M. Harris

Nebraska Center for Research on Children, Youth, Families, and Schools: Faculty Publications

Clinical members of AAMFT were solicited by means of a randomized multi-staged clustering technique to identify their attitudes and beliefs regarding psychotropic drugs. All participants were blind to the overall purpose of the study (n = 322) and were directed to read a clinical vignette and then identify what course of action they would take with the client. They were then asked to complete a small questionnaire regarding their attitudes and beliefs regarding psychotropic drugs. Results of the study showed that 35.7% of the clinicians identified medication and a medication referral as a viable treatment option they might pursue with …

Informal Instructional Teacher Leaders: How Principals Can Support Them And Their Effect On Instructional Reform:, Pamela Austen

Academic Leadership: The Online Journal (2003-2012)

The single case explanatory study of the three elementary schools of a regional school district examined the relationship between the principal, a designated teacher leader, and a peer teacher in three elementary schools, in attempt to learn more about the relational factors that may work to inhibit or support instructional reform efforts. Qualitative analysis procedures were used to analyze data from the interview transcripts, the observational field notes, and documents related to the implementation of the SRBI reform. Two sets of interview transcripts from the nine participants were used along with two sets of observational field notes of the school’s …

Interpretations Of Interpretations: Combining Community-Based Participatory Research And Interpretive Inquiry To Improve Health, Jessica Gregg, Lourdes Centurion, Julio Maldonado, Raquel Aguillon, Rosemary Carmela Celaya-Alston, Stephanie Farquhar Jul 2010

Interpretations Of Interpretations: Combining Community-Based Participatory Research And Interpretive Inquiry To Improve Health, Jessica Gregg, Lourdes Centurion, Julio Maldonado, Raquel Aguillon, Rosemary Carmela Celaya-Alston, Stephanie Farquhar

Community Health Faculty Publications and Presentations

Background: Latina immigrants from Mexico suffer significantly increased morbidity and mortality from cervical cancer when compared with non-Hispanic White women, largely owing to lack of screening and appropriate treatment. Objectives: To demonstrate that by combining the tools of community-based participatory research (CBPR) with the tools of interpretive inquiry, it is possible to address explicit community concerns surrounding a particular problem such as cervical cancer while also examining what other, perhaps less immediately visible, matters consume the time and attention of community members. Methods: We first briefly discuss and compare CBPR as an approach to research and interpretive inquiry as a …

Engaging The Religious Dimension In Significant Adolescent Literature, Rickey Cotton Jul 2010

Engaging The Religious Dimension In Significant Adolescent Literature, Rickey Cotton

Selected Faculty Publications

This article discusses the religious dimension in contemporary adolescent novels of recognized merit. It notes psychological and sociological studies indicating that religion is a significant factor in the actual lives of both adults and adolescents and observes that consequently it can be expected that quality literature will reflect this reality. A functional definition of religion was used to address the practical and varied ways religious or religious-like dynamics are engaged by adolescent characters. Religion was defined as whatever individuals do to come to grips with profound existential issues—questions dealing with ultimate issues. An examination of works by three major writers …

Climate Change Impact On Agriculture: Devils Lake Basin, Andrei Kirilenko

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

Northern Great Plains is one of the most important agricultural regionsworldwide. This is also a region expected to be heavily impacted by climate change. Thisand two other papers in this session concentrate on studying climate change impacts onwater resources of the region, and on the impacts of these changes on agriculture. Themajor focus of our interest is Devils Lake watershed in North Dakota. The watershed islocated in the Northern Great Plains, the area where intensive agriculture has caused anextreme change in land use and land cover, followed by substantial water pollution. Modelling Environmental Impact With A Goal And Causal Relation Integrated Approach, He Zhang, Lin Liu Jul 2010

Modelling Environmental Impact With A Goal And Causal Relation Integrated Approach, He Zhang, Lin Liu

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

Due to the complexity and cross-disciplinary nature of environmental and climate change related systems, collaborative modelling and cross-disciplinary knowledge sharing is unavoidable. Environmental impact modelling encompasses graphical and numerical representations, synergizes conceptual frameworks with quantitative annotation and computation. As a consequence, a collaborative knowledge sharing and acquisition platform is in dire need to support system analysis and holistic decision making in such a setting. This paper proposes modelling environmental impacts using a goal and causal relation integrated approach. In particular, top-level goals of stakeholders are modeled and refined into concrete parameters and causal relationships. To facilitate collaborative conceptual modelling and …
