The Matthew Effect And Treatment Selection For Urban Poor Clients : Social Pain, Countertransference Or Competition? : A Project Based Upon An Independent Investigation, Launa Kay Bodde Sep 2010

The Matthew Effect And Treatment Selection For Urban Poor Clients : Social Pain, Countertransference Or Competition? : A Project Based Upon An Independent Investigation, Launa Kay Bodde

Theses, Dissertations, and Projects

This study is a theoretical look at the intersection of neurobiology and analytic theory as it impacts clinician's decisions about treatment selection. Historically, it has been proven that clients who are poor do not receive the same level of care, attention and service as clients from "upper classes." These poorer clients do not have the same ability to compete for resources, therefore the rich get richer while the poor get poorer. This phenomena has been coined the Matthew Effect. This study is an attempt to find new and different ways of explaining the Matthew Effect phenomenon. What exactly are the …

Socioemotional Development And Nonverbal Learning Disabilities : A Theoretical Intersection Of Neurobiology And Self Psychology : A Project Based Upon An Independent Investigation, Joanna M. Lightburn

Theses, Dissertations, and Projects

The purpose of this theoretical investigation is to explore how Nonverbal Learning Disabilities (NLD) influences a child's social and emotional development by examining the potential interrelationship between the literature on neurobiology related to NLD and literature on normative psychosocial development. NLD, a lesser-known learning disability subtype, can impact an individual's capacity to process and remember visual-spatial information. Individuals with NLD have difficulty with social interactions, as they cannot recognize or accurately decode another's nonverbal cues, such as facial expressions, gestures, body language and tone of voice. Due to repeated rejection from others in response to their social perception deficits, individuals …

Theses, Dissertations, and Projects

This study examines the relationship between parental cultural competence and the development of ethnic/racial identity among a small group of South Korean adoptees raised by White American parents in the United States. There is a growing body of research supporting the hypothesis that parental attitudes and cultural socialization practices impact significantly outcomes related to the development of racial identity among trans-racially adopted children. The research seeks to identify and measure specific characteristics in the familial environments of these Asian trans-racial adoptees which may affect the outcome of the adoptees' racial and ethnic identity in adulthood. To accomplish study goals, information …

Practice Wisdom : An Exploration Of School Social Workers Experience With Social And Emotional Learning Curricula : A Project Based Upon An Independent Investigation, Gordon David Gross Sep 2010

Practice Wisdom : An Exploration Of School Social Workers Experience With Social And Emotional Learning Curricula : A Project Based Upon An Independent Investigation, Gordon David Gross

Theses, Dissertations, and Projects

Of all of the professions that exist in a school setting, social workers are trained specifically in the three main theoretical tenets of social and emotional learning programs: systems theory, cognitive behavioral theory and psychoanalytic theory. Yet there is little in the literature about what the role of social work should be as a stakeholder in implementing a SEL curriculum. This qualitative research was designed to investigate what could be learned from the practice wisdom of school social workers in elementary schools that have adopted a SEL curriculum about their experiences and the roles they have adopted. This study employed …

Theses, Dissertations, and Projects

This study was conducted in order to explore the perspectives of clinicians who work with families in which a parent is affected by mental illness. The relatively small amount of research that has been conducted in this area led the researcher to choose a qualitative exploratory design. Nine clinicians who identified as practitioners of family therapy participated in this study. The clinicians were geographically located in New York City and narratives were gathered during forty-five minute in-person interviews. The questions focused on the following topics: 1.) What are the theoretical frameworks or interventions that clinicians use when working with families …

Body Image And Adolescent Male Sexual Perpetrators : A Project Based Upon An Independent Investigation, Jennifer Elizabeth Brownlee Sep 2010

Body Image And Adolescent Male Sexual Perpetrators : A Project Based Upon An Independent Investigation, Jennifer Elizabeth Brownlee

Theses, Dissertations, and Projects

Adolescent sexual offenders are responsible for at least 40% of reported forcible rapes and child molestation in the United States (Snyder and Sickmond, 1999). With such startling statistics, it is important to consider possible reasons for such behaviors, as well as treatment options to minimize recidivism rates. Currently, male adolescent perpetrator treatment necessitates full bio-psycho-social treatment. An example of such treatment would be a multifaceted treatment model that accounts not only for the behaviors themselves, but also the total environment: mental, physical, and familial, or a holistic approach (Ryan and Lane, 1997). Currently, body image is not fully considered within …

Re-Envisaging Erikson : Deconstructing Adoption Through The Case Of Claire : A Project Based Upon An Independent Investigation, Alison M. Armstrong

Theses, Dissertations, and Projects

This theoretical study explored the social construction of adoption present within North American discourse and how this has impacted subsequent theoretical understandings of adoptee development. This was done with a particular emphasis on Eriksonian theories of adoptee development. This study utilized a cultural artifact, namely the character of Claire in Tim Kring's (2006) television show, Heroes. Claire's case is then used to compare current uses of Eriksonian theories of psychosocial ego development with possible, more comprehensive iterations of Erikson's theory. The impact and relevance to social work theory, research and practice are discussed.

Pathology, Risk, And Emancipation : The Impact Of Dominant Discourse On Lgbtq Youth In Out-Of-Home Care : A Project Based Upon An Independent Investigation, Jill Christine Mccullough

Theses, Dissertations, and Projects

Currently, there is a scarcity of comprehensive research that has addressed the experiences and service needs of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) youth who enter public and private out-of-home care settings. However, existing literature has illustrated significant experiences of discrimination and victimization related to the sexual identity, gender identity, and/or gender expression of these youth from both caregivers and peers in public out-of-home care settings. The purpose of this study is to critically examine the impact of dominant discourse or "master narratives" of LGBTQ identity development on the lives of those youth who enter out-of-home care settings. Recent …

Lacan's Critique Of Freud's Case Of Dora And The Therapeutic Action Of Working In The Symbolic : A Project Based Upon An Independent Investigation, Sean Michael Breidenthal Sep 2010

Lacan's Critique Of Freud's Case Of Dora And The Therapeutic Action Of Working In The Symbolic : A Project Based Upon An Independent Investigation, Sean Michael Breidenthal

Theses, Dissertations, and Projects

This study was undertaken to determine the therapeutic action of working in the symbolic order. Lacan critiques psychoanalytic theory for reducing psychoanalysis to a therapy of the imaginary, thus ignoring the true significance of Freud's discovery. A review of contemporary accounts of therapeutic action established interpretation, the clinical relationship, and the position of the analyst as key identifiers of a theory of therapeutic action. The case of Dora was utilized to identify Freud's theory of therapeutic action. Lacan's critique of Freud's case in "Intervention on Transference" resulted in an explication of Lacan's theory of therapeutic action, particularly in regards to …

An Exploration Of The Social Construction Of Race And Racial Identity : A Project Based Upon An Independent Investigation, Elizabeth Castrellon Sep 2010

An Exploration Of The Social Construction Of Race And Racial Identity : A Project Based Upon An Independent Investigation, Elizabeth Castrellon

Theses, Dissertations, and Projects

This theoretical study explored the social construction of race and racial identity through the lens of Queer Theory and Narrative Theory. Although the concept of race is understood as a social construct, research literature shows that this concept is complex and that there are many factors that contribute to the social construction of race in a way that has real life consequences for people. The use of Queer Theory and Narrative Theory to examine this social construct provides a broader base of understanding for clinical applications. The researcher provides recommendations for social workers in their work with diverse populations.
