Advocating For Scholarship: Why Open Access?, Paula S. Mcmillen, Cory Tucker

Journal for International Counselor Education

The editors of the Journal for International Counselor Education have taken the decisive step to make this publication an “Open Access” journal—freely available to all readers with internet access. This article will set the context for choosing open access publishing in the current scholarly communication environment. Numerous factors have changed the face of scholarly publishing, creating an unsustainable economic model for print and subscription journals. Obstacles such as evaluation traditions in higher education must adapt as creators and users increasingly demand open access to scholarship online. Timely realization of the opportunities and benefits of the open access model depend upon …

Perceptions Of Communication With Gay And Lesbian Family Members: Predictors Of Relational Satisfaction And Implications For Outgroup Attitudes, Jordan Soliz, Elizabeth Ribarsky, Meredith Marko Harrigan, Stacy Tye-Williams

Department of Communication Studies: Faculty Publications

This study investigates perceptions of family communication among members with different sexual identities. Specifically, from the perspective of heterosexual family members (N = 129), the study takes an intergroup perspective to determine how accommodative and non-accommodative communication and attitudes toward homosexuality predict intergroup anxiety and relational satisfaction with gay or lesbian family members. Further, the manner in which family communication influences attitudes toward homosexuality is examined. Results are discussed in terms of implications for research on heterosexual-homosexual interaction, family communication, and intergroup communication, in general.

Family Affairs Newsletter 2010-02-01, Zack Paakkonen

Family Affairs newsletter (2004-2016)

FAMILY AFFAIRS was a free, twice-a-month, social activities newsletter for the GLBTQI (gay/lesbian/bisexual/trans/queer/intersex) community, sent out around the 1st and 15th of each month. It covered the State of Maine only. The list was begun and maintained for many years by Jean Vermette in Bangor, and later operated by Zack Paakkonen of Portland. Over the years it evolved from a social activities newsletter into a business directory, classified ad service, and community bulletin board.

Transforming Front-Line Child Welfare Practice: The Impacts Of Institutional Settings On Services, Employment Environments, Children, And Families (Summary Of Final Report), Gary Cameron, Lirondel Hazineh, Karen Frensch

Partnerships for Children and Families Project

In 2006, the Ontario government launched an ambitious and multi-faceted Transformation Agenda for child welfare services. Among this Agenda’s objectives was the development of more cooperative helping relationships in child welfare, reducing the system’s reliance on legal authority to engage families, creating community and service partnerships and increasing child welfare capacity to respond differentially to families. Within this shifting child welfare context, the Transforming Front-line Child Welfare Practice Project research’s main purpose was to understand how centrally located service delivery settings and service delivery settings that were more accessible to families affected front-line child protection practice. A second encompassing objective …

A Critical Analysis Of The Theoretical And Empirical Literature Comparing The Effects Of Traditional Versus Community Policing On Quality Of Life And Associated Quality Of Life Issues, Rodney Polite Feb 2010

A Critical Analysis Of The Theoretical And Empirical Literature Comparing The Effects Of Traditional Versus Community Policing On Quality Of Life And Associated Quality Of Life Issues, Rodney Polite

Graduate Student Dissertations, Theses, Capstones, and Portfolios

There are two major issues that will be addressed in this study to determine if they influence the selection of an appropriate policing strategy. The first is citizen perception of whether crime has decreased or increased in their community. The second is whether the length of time a citizen has lived in the community has an effect on their perception of crime and their attitude towards a specific policing strategy.

Historically, each policing strategy, although at times labeled differently (professional policing, team policing, neighborhood policing, zero-tolerance policing), has evolved and adapted based on various dynamics within police organizations and the …

Quaker Activity In Ramallah: 1869 -1914, Catherine C. B. Baylin Feb 2010

Quaker Activity In Ramallah: 1869 -1914, Catherine C. B. Baylin

Theses and Dissertations

The story of the Quakers in Ramallah is one thread of the complex tapestry of Arab-American relations in the 19th and early 20th centuries. American Quakers first traveled to the region in 1869 to establish schools and medical outreach. By the early twentieth century, Quakers were running half a dozen day schools with more than 250 students and spots in their boarding schools were highly coveted. The evolution of these Quaker institutions illuminates some of the complex dynamics between missionaries and their intended converts. Using memoirs and archival sources, including private letters and diaries, I argue that the Quaker mission …

Helping Child Welfare Workers Improve Cultural Competence By Utilizing Spiritual Genograms With Native American Families And Children, Gordon E. Limb, David R. Hodge Feb 2010

Helping Child Welfare Workers Improve Cultural Competence By Utilizing Spiritual Genograms With Native American Families And Children, Gordon E. Limb, David R. Hodge

Faculty Publications

This study represents an initial step at giving child welfare workers an important assessment tool as they seek to provide culturally and spiritually competent services to Native American families and children. In order to determine the relevancy and consistency of utilizing a modified spiritual genogram assessment tool with Native Americans, 50 Native American experts reviewed, rated, and gave feedback on its use. Results showed that while there were limitations in utilizing spiritual genograms, this assessment tool could help child welfare workers become more culturally competent as they develop interventions with Native American families and children.
