Academic Integrity Office: A Proposal, Brian Stewart, Charles Faires Apr 2010

Academic Integrity Office: A Proposal, Brian Stewart, Charles Faires

Academic Leadership: The Online Journal (2003-2012)

In higher education, the topic of plagiarism and the issues surrounding this topic are ever present. However, the larger umbrella issue of academic integrity, of which plagiarism is encompassed, is not present. To formally address the larger umbrella issue, the School of Education (SOE) at a private nonprofit University, located in the Southeastern United States, proposed the creation of an Academic Integrity Office. This paper provides background information related to academic integrity gathered from the SOE, a review of literature, summarized data collected from faculty members of the SOE, and a proposal. Sections of this paper are based upon a …

Differing Administrator, Faculty, And Staff Perceptions Of Organizational Culture As Related To External Accreditation, Claire Procopio Apr 2010

Differing Administrator, Faculty, And Staff Perceptions Of Organizational Culture As Related To External Accreditation, Claire Procopio

Academic Leadership: The Online Journal (2003-2012)

There is an inherent tension in the U.S. system of accreditation. Historically, the system has been one of self-regulation (Brittingham, 2009). As access to higher education has grown, however, and the concomitant flow of federal money to colleges and universities has increased, the federal government and the taxpayers it represents have called for more and more external reporting of measures of college quality. Critics of the current system would like more external oversight to create what they have termed variously a “culture of quality” or a “culture of evidence” (Bardo, 2009; Crow, 2009; Kelderman, 2009; Understanding, 2001). The most dissatisfied …

Parenting On The Tenure Track: Exploring Gender Differences In Perceptions Of Collegial And Supervisor Support, Diane Loeffler, Gretchen Ely, Chris Flaherty Apr 2010

Parenting On The Tenure Track: Exploring Gender Differences In Perceptions Of Collegial And Supervisor Support, Diane Loeffler, Gretchen Ely, Chris Flaherty

Academic Leadership: The Online Journal (2003-2012)

The task of gaining a tenured professorship is demanding one, requiring a wide range of research, teaching, writing and service skills. Faculty members in tenure track professor positions do not work conventional hours and generally report schedules exceeding 50 hours of work per week (Zimbler, & Conley, 1997). Many pretenure professors are also parents of children under age 18, thus requiring that they nurture family relationships while also adhering to a demanding work schedule. While women make up over half of doctoral graduates in the United States today, the literature indicates that they are less likely to go on to …

Human Trafficking And Prostitution: A Comparative Review Of Swedish And Dutch Policy, Emilie Davidson, Kelsey Perry, Jini Roby Apr 2010

Human Trafficking And Prostitution: A Comparative Review Of Swedish And Dutch Policy, Emilie Davidson, Kelsey Perry, Jini Roby

FHSS Mentored Research Conference

1.2 million children are trafficked every year (UNICEF), and and the total number of prostituted children could be as high as 10 million (The Lancet). Trafficking is the second largest source of illegal income worldwide, exceded only by the sale of illegal drugs (Belser, 2005). A study of women trafficked to the European Union found that 95% of victims had been violently assaulted or coerced into a sexual act, and over 60% of victims reported fatigue, neurological symptoms... back pain, vaginal discharges, and gynecological infections (Zimmerman, 2006). Definitions: Trafficking refers to “the recruitment, transportation, transfer, harbouring or receipt of persons, …

Neither Foster Nor Orphanages, Tami Thayne, Judy Norman Apr 2010

Neither Foster Nor Orphanages, Tami Thayne, Judy Norman

FHSS Mentored Research Conference

Clearly, there are circumstances requiring out-of family placement for children. Foster care in the U. S. and orphanages in numerous countries remain available or the only alternative for care of some children at-risk. The mental status of children while in alternative care has received little research attention while much research has focused on the post-care, long-term negative consequences of such care, including developmental delays or impairment (Norman & Park, 2009; Pearce & Pearce, 2001). Research suggests a significant negative psychological impact for children raised in orphanages. While foster care has been viewed as an improvement in the care of vulnerable …

Measuring Father Involvement With Adolescents In Botswana, Kerianne Dyer, Jini Roby Apr 2010

Measuring Father Involvement With Adolescents In Botswana, Kerianne Dyer, Jini Roby

FHSS Mentored Research Conference

Emerging research suggests that father involvement is a multifaceted concept, often driven by cultural mandates. In this study, survey data were collected from 704 adolescents aged 14-16 in Botswana. Fathers who provided both co-residence and financial support were perceived at the highest level of involvement. When considered separately, financial support rather than co-residence was associated with higher levels of perceived father involvement. Maternal gate keeping was also found to be a significant influence on perceived levels of father involvement. Implications for policy, practice and research are discussed.

Predictors Of Caregiver Burden Of Parents Of Children With Disabilities, Richard Alboroto, Susanne O. Roper Apr 2010

Predictors Of Caregiver Burden Of Parents Of Children With Disabilities, Richard Alboroto, Susanne O. Roper

FHSS Mentored Research Conference

Parents of children with disabilities experience elevated stress, which may contribute to their caregiver burden. Factors related to caregiver burden may be child or parent related. In this study, we investigated how income, economic hardship, age of the child with a disability, number of children in the family, and family cohesion were associated with mothers’ and fathers’ caregiver burden. Participants consisted of parents of 192 children; 155 of the children had some form of disability. The results show that family cohesion was negatively related to mothers’ and fathers’ burden. Economic hardship was also strongly associated with burden. Results suggest that …

Book Review: The Grace Abbott Reader Edited By John Sorensen With Judith Sealander, Sonya Michel

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

Those familiar with the Abbott sisters generally regard Grace as the doer, Edith as the thinker. Both were leading Progressive-Era reformers, but while Edith made her mark as a pioneering social work educator and theorist, Grace—a one-time resident of Hull House who fought for women’s suffrage, immigrant rights, and child welfare—went on to become the second chief of the U.S. Children’s Bureau and gained a reputation as a powerful advocate and effective administrator. Along the way, however, Grace Abbott also wrote a number of articles and speeches that reflect deep thought as well as strong beliefs in equality and progress. …

Book Review: Lipset’S Agrarian Socialism: A Re-Examination Edited By David E. Smith, Jim Mochoruk

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

Seymour Martin Lipset, rather famously associated with the concept of “American Exceptionalism” and renowned as one of the leading practitioners of political sociology in the United States, was better known in Canada for works that seemed to make little, if any, impression upon U.S. readers. First and foremost was his landmark study of the social democratic Co-operative Commonwealth Federation’s (CCF) rise to political power in the Canadian province of Saskatchewan—Agrarian Socialism. It is the stuff of legend in Canadian academic circles how a young PhD student—a Jewish leftist from New York no less—came to Saskatchewan in the mid …

Revitalizing The Adversary System In Family Law, Jane C. Murphy Apr 2010

Revitalizing The Adversary System In Family Law, Jane C. Murphy

All Faculty Scholarship

The way in which families resolve disputes has undergone dramatic change over the last decade. Scholars have focused much attention on a number of substantive law changes that have contributed to this transformation. These include the changing definitions of marriage, parenthood, and families. But less attention has been paid to the enormous changes that have taken place in the processes surrounding family dispute resolution. These changes have been even more comprehensive and have fundamentally altered the way in which disputing families interact with the legal system. Both the methods and goals of legal intervention for families in conflict have changed, …

Attitudes And Perceptions Towards Men In Nursing Education, Wally J. Bartfay, Emma Bartfay, Kimberly A. Clow, Terry Wu

Internet Journal of Allied Health Sciences and Practice

Purpose: The aim of the current investigation was to compare and contrast societal perceptions and attitudes towards men in nursing as reported by male and female nursing and non-nursing university students. Methods: A comparative study design was employed to investigate societal attitudes and perceptions towards male nurses enrolled in school of nursing in a mid-sized university in Ontario, Canada. A convenience non-random sampling method was employed that consisted of undergraduate nursing (N = 82) and non-nursing (N = 67) students. Perceptions and attitudes towards men in nursing were assessed using the Attitudes Towards Men in Nursing Scale (ATMINS). Results: Sixty-seven …

Narratives From Non-Profit Workers: The Journey Of Helping Women Leave Prostitution, Rachel D. Collins Apr 2010

Narratives From Non-Profit Workers: The Journey Of Helping Women Leave Prostitution, Rachel D. Collins

Senior Honors Theses

Prostitution is connected with several factors–abuse, low self-esteem, drugs, and homelessness. Many negative emotions are experienced while prostituting. The emotional and physical effects of prostitution can remain years after the woman has left prostitution. The process of leaving prostitution can be strenuous, and necessitates a strong support group. The narratives of service providers from organizations reaching out to prostitutes are examined. Through interviews, the journey of helping prostitutes were studied to find themes associated with supporting the prostitute’s exit from her previous life to the acclamation of a new lifestyle.

Perceived Personal And Social Competence: Development Of Valid And Reliable Measures, Joyce V. Fetro, Darson L. Rhodes, David W. Hey Apr 2010

Perceived Personal And Social Competence: Development Of Valid And Reliable Measures, Joyce V. Fetro, Darson L. Rhodes, David W. Hey

Kinesiology and Public Health

During the last 20 years, youth programming has shifted from risk reduction to youth development. While numerous instruments exist to measure selected individual characteristics/competencies among youth, a comprehensive instrument to measure four constructs of personal and social skills could not be identified. The purpose of this study was to develop four assessment instruments to measure perceived personal/social competence. Specifically, this study focused on identifying items to measure: (a) intrapersonal skills, (b) interpersonal skills, (c) coping skills, and (d) judgment skills. A Delphi panel of nine professionals in health education, youth development programming, and instrument development established content validity. Readability of …

Women Power In Corporate India: Women Directorships On Indian Corporate Boards 1995-2007 Trends, S Chandrashekar

Working Papers

Data on Women Directors on the Board of Directors of 166 Indian companies have been collected and analysed for the period 1995 to 2007. Â Women Directorships on Corporate Boards show an increasing trend in numbers as well as in percentage terms from 29 or 1.66% of all Directorships in 1995 to 67 or 3.63 % of all Directorships in 2007. These percentages are much lower than those for many of the industrially advanced countries for which such data is available. Â Once Women make it to the top the data seems to suggest that they do wield more influence …
