Revegetating Burned Arid Lands: Identifying Successful Native Species Using Trait And Competition Analysis: Final Report, Scott R. Abella Dec 2010

Revegetating Burned Arid Lands: Identifying Successful Native Species Using Trait And Competition Analysis: Final Report, Scott R. Abella

Fire Science

Species selection can make the difference between successful revegetation projects and costly failures. Candidate native species for revegetating burned arid lands in the southwestern United States must meet at least two criteria. These species must: (1) be competitive in postfire environments typically dominated by exotic grasses, and (2) be able to become established reliably by seeding or planting. In response to Manager’s Request Task 3 (reestablishment of native vegetation after fires on arid lands) in the 2006 JFS announcement for proposals, this research tackled the problem of selecting native species with the greatest chance of revegetation success by conducting synergistic …

Pictures or paintings of high-rank officials hanged in government or public offices are not only a recent phenomenon. Francois Valentijn (1724-1726) wrote in his book, Oud en Neuw Oost Indien, the common practice of hanging pictures or paintings of high-rank officials even in the eighteenth century in Indonesia when the East India Company (VOC) had its power over the land. The Fatahillah Historic Museum in Jakarta has kept all the pictures and paintings of the Dutch Indies officials from the time of the East India Company (VOC) to 1942. The curriculum vitae of those persona is a corpus for research …

The Market Orientation Of Slovenian Companies: Two-Group Comparisons, Mateja Bodlaj, Iča Rojšek Dec 2010

The Market Orientation Of Slovenian Companies: Two-Group Comparisons, Mateja Bodlaj, Iča Rojšek

Economic and Business Review

The purpose of the presented empirical study was to examine market orientation between groups of companies in terms of three company characteristics, i.e. main business sector, company size, and type of the market, and three environmental characteristics, i.e. market turbulence, technological turbulence and competitive intensity. Market orientation is analysed by distinguishing between a cultural and behavioural perspective and by distinguishing between a responsive and proactive form. Comparisons between groups of companies are made by testing invariant latent mean structures. The analysis of 325 Slovenian companies reveals that the particular market orientation dimensions only differ when different levels of market and …

What Determines The Co-Operative Potential For Firms In Western European And Cee Border Regions? A Comparative Micro-Level Analysis, Birgit Leick Dec 2010

What Determines The Co-Operative Potential For Firms In Western European And Cee Border Regions? A Comparative Micro-Level Analysis, Birgit Leick

Economic and Business Review

The present article investigates whether Eastern European enlargement influences the co-operative potential of firms in the borderland between Western and Central Eastern Europe more than of other firms, i.e. of those not being located in the borderland. Based on theoretical arguments as well as empirical evidence, we build a micro-level framework of factors, which determine a firm’s likelihood of cross-border business co-operation. Using logistic regression, this framework is empirically tested and compared for two cross-sectional datasets of firms located in the border regions in Northern Bohemia (the Czech Republic) and Saxony (East Germany).

Determinants Of Firm Entries: Empirical Evidence For Slovenia, Dijana Močnik Dec 2010

Determinants Of Firm Entries: Empirical Evidence For Slovenia, Dijana Močnik

Economic and Business Review

We empirically investigate the determinants of new firm formations on Slovenian data set for the 6-year period across statistical regions. Analyzed are the relationships of the determinants classified into five groups: demand, unemployment, industrial restructuring, local financial capital, and knowledge concentration. We find a positive and significant impact of GDP p.c., unemployment rate, productivity growth and a negative relationship for employment density. Results show that some regions have significantly worse conditions for start-up firms than others. Practical implications of this study would allow policy makers to better understand the dynamics in new firm formations.

Florida's Adolescent Literacy Policy: An Alternative Reading And Response, Diane Kroeger Dec 2010

Florida's Adolescent Literacy Policy: An Alternative Reading And Response, Diane Kroeger

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

In this qualitative case study, I constructed interpretations of the meanings conveyed by state-level discourse communities as they were manifested in the primary and secondary speech genres of Florida’s adolescent literacy policy. Meanings (or values, beliefs and feelings) are highly tacit understandings embedded in the language, actions and objects of policy (Yanow, 2000), and are conveyed through informal and formal speech (Bakhtin, 1986). Results revealed (a) state policy meanings convey multiple versions of literacy with a heavy focus on receptive aspects of literate practice; (b) a typology of students and their fit within the institutional system; and (c) an emphasis …

Comparison Of Safety Performance By Design Types At Freeway Diverge Areas And Exit Ramp Sections, Hongyun Chen

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The primary objective of the study is to evaluate the safety performance of different freeway exit types used in current practical designs. More specific, the research objectives include the following two parts: 1) to compare the safety performance of different design types at freeway diverge areas and exit ramp sections; and 2) to identify the impact factors contributing to the crashes happening at these two specific segments.

The study area includes four subjects, the freeway widely-spaced diverge areas; the freeway closely-spaced diverge areas; the left-side off-ramps and the exit ramp sections. For the freeway diverge areas, design types were defined …

Due Diligence And Demographic Disparities: Effects Of The Planning Of U.S.- Mexico Border Fence On Marginalized Populations, J. Gaines Wilson, Jude A. Benavides, Karen Engle, Denise Gilman, Anthony Reisinger, Jessica Spangler, Joe Lemen

School of Earth, Environmental, & Marine Sciences Faculty Publications

In the buildup to the construction the U.S.-Mexico border fence by the United States Department of Homeland Security (USDHS), much attention was drawn to security, drug enforcement, and immigration issues. However, there was little quantitative analysis regarding which populations were most likely to be affected by the proposed fence. Using a geographic information system, we classified census blocks in Cameron County, Texas into one of two categories: either ‘fence’ or ‘gap’. A total of 14 demographic factors were tested for disparities between those living in gap areas and those living in areas exposed to the fence. Twelve of fourteen factors …

Application Of Shewhart Cycle Of "Plan-Do-Check-Act" Model To Improve The Waiting Time In Clinical Rehabilitation Therapy, Wen-Hsuan Lin, Ru-Lan Hsieh, Pei-Jei Tsai

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

The Shewhart cycle ”Plan-Do-Check-Act” (PDCA) can be applied by organizations as a model for designing, checking, evaluating, improving, or re-designing plans to improve the quality of service. We applied the PDCA model to clinical rehabilitation services in Taiwan and discussed its effects on the improvement in waiting time. Three issues facing current clinical rehabilitation services were proposed by the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation in a medical center to which PDCA was applied: (1) arranging occupational therapy for in-patients within 3 days after consultation, (2) shortening the waiting time for therapy in children with developmental delays, and (3) shortening …

The Effect Of Body Weight Support Treadmill Training On Walking Ability In Patients With Incomplete Spinal Cord Injury, Chien-Hsing Tseng Dec 2010

The Effect Of Body Weight Support Treadmill Training On Walking Ability In Patients With Incomplete Spinal Cord Injury, Chien-Hsing Tseng

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

In modern health care systems that attach importance to acute treatment and health care, there is an increasing number of patients with incomplete spinal cord injury that have increased chance of regaining their ability to walk. However, how to effectively achieve this target of promoting the ability to walk is a question that must be urgently addressed by rehabilitation medicine and public health authorities. International research has already confirmed that body weight support treadmill training has a positive therapeutic effect on walking ability in patients with incomplete spinal cord injury, but in Taiwan not many relevant studies have been performed. …

A 38-year-old man with uncontrolled type 2 diabetes mellitus complained of a mild painful swelling over the right posterior thigh that had been present for 3 days. He was initially diagnosed as having a right hamstring strain. After a 7-day treatment with non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, the symptoms progressed to a prominent painful swelling over the right posterior thigh. Leukocytosis and high inflammation indices were noted. The ultrasonography of the right posterior thigh showed an ill-defined heteroechoic lesion surrounded by an irregularly thick hyperechoic and hypervascular wall in the muscle layer. The diagnosis was pyomyositis of the right biceps femoris muscle, …

Early-Stage Myeloid Sarcoma Presenting As Back Pain In An Adolescent: A Casereport, Chao-Pin Yang, Shih-Chung Wang, Ta-Sen Wei, Sen-Yung Liu, Tsung-Ju Wu, Albert D. Yang

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

Myeloid sarcoma (MS) is a rare disease. MS is a malignant solid tumor resulting from the extramedullary proliferation of myeloblasts or immature myeloid cells. It is often described in association with acute myeloid leukemia (AML). In the absence of overt leukemia, MS is rarely considered in the differential diagnosis of a soft-tissue mass, and the diagnosis of MS is usually delayed or misdiagnosed. We present the case of a female adolescent who initially complained of back pain. Conservative treatment including medication and rehabilitation was given to her, but in vain, and the symptoms gradually progressed to severe neurological function loss, including …

Can Tax Expenditure Analysis Be Divorced From A Normative Tax Base?: A Critique Of The 'New Paradigm' And Its Denouement, J. Clifton Fleming Jr., Robert J. Peroni Dec 2010

Can Tax Expenditure Analysis Be Divorced From A Normative Tax Base?: A Critique Of The 'New Paradigm' And Its Denouement, J. Clifton Fleming Jr., Robert J. Peroni

Faculty Scholarship

Tax expenditure analysis (TEA) requires a baseline for identifying tax provisions that provide subsidies or incentives instead of serving to define the tax base and to implement the tax. With respect to the federal income tax, the baseline historically has been the Schanz-Haig-Simons (SHS) definition of income with a few modifications. Critics have continuously and strongly attacked TEA by characterizing the SHS baseline as unprincipled, imprecise, and insufficiently related to our hybrid income/consumption tax system as it actually exists. Since the baseline is hopelessly defective, so the critics argue, TEA is fatally dysfunctional and the results of its application to …
