Western Pond Turtle Summer Habitat Use In A Coastal Watershed, Jae Abel Jan 2010

Western Pond Turtle Summer Habitat Use In A Coastal Watershed, Jae Abel

Master's Theses

Western pond turtle (Actinemys marmorata) habitat use was studied in a coastal pond, lagoon, and stream system during the summer of 1995 and 1996 at Waddell Creek, Santa Cruz County, California. Location and habitat association data were recorded for locations and sightings of radio-tagged and un-tagged turtles during the normal active season. Summary comparison of habitat associations and habitat availability provided inference of habitat preference at several habitat scales. For most of the active season the turtles were in relatively sunny aquatic habitat, in deeper, slower velocity water. In addition, the turtles were most commonly associated with exposed …

Coaches completed a FAA test, Game Situation Data Sheet …

Social Support As Moderator Of Job-Specific Or Generic Stressors With Strains, Kaci Deeana Mabe Jan 2010

Social Support As Moderator Of Job-Specific Or Generic Stressors With Strains, Kaci Deeana Mabe

Master's Theses

Two studies examining the relationship between job-specific stressors and strains versus the relationship between generic stressors with strain, as well as the moderating role of social support (from coworkers and administrators), are presented. Eighteen primary school teachers from a private Jewish day school (Study 1) and 242 teachers from an Arizona school district (Study 2) completed self-administered surveys. Results indicated that job-specific (vs. generic) stressors had a stronger positive relationship with strains, but social support was a better moderator for the relationship between generic stressors and strain. As hypothesized, administrator support had a reverse-buffering effect on the stressor-strain relationship in …

Flow Cytometry Of Alexandrium Catenella From Elkhorn Slough, California., Phillip Roland Hawkins Jan 2010

Flow Cytometry Of Alexandrium Catenella From Elkhorn Slough, California., Phillip Roland Hawkins

Master's Theses

This study describes the use of flow cytometry for the enumeration of the toxic marine dinoflagellate Alexandrium catenella in both estuarine samples from Elkhorn Slough, California and from sea water samples from inner Monterey Bay. Samples were subjected to a density-barrier sample enrichment technique employing percoll to separate debris from phytoplankton prior to sample fixation, labeling and analysis. Clarified, enriched preparations of phytoplankton were subjected to whole cell Fluorescent In Situ Hybridization (FISH) using a ribosomal DNA (rDNA) probe specific for the North American ribotype (NA1) of the dinoflagellate genus Alexandrium and analysis by flow cytometry. Flow cytometry was validated …

Who Am I?: The Reflexivity Of Self-Identity Through Tourism, Matthew Lee Milde Jan 2010

Who Am I?: The Reflexivity Of Self-Identity Through Tourism, Matthew Lee Milde

Master's Theses

This study has set forth to close gaps, explore innovative methods, and create a better understanding of "Who am I?", in tourism research. Few studies in tourism research focus on how experiences gained from traveling shape self-identity through personal biographies. Building on the work of seminal authors on self-identity, personal narrative, and tourism, this study explores the reflexivity of self-identity as represented in travel narratives. The lived experiences offered through narrative condition spontaneous instances of self-discovery allowing for the (re)creation of new self-identities.

Participants were selected through a snowball sample; in-depth interviews were held with fifteen (15) adults born and …

Where's My Daddy? Effects Of Fatherlessness On Women's Relational Communication, Latoya Marie Jackson Jan 2010

Where's My Daddy? Effects Of Fatherlessness On Women's Relational Communication, Latoya Marie Jackson

Master's Theses

The purpose of this thesis research was to understand the relationship between father absence and women's communication styles in romantic heterosexual relationships under social cognitive theory. Two studies were conducted using a multi-method research approach in order to triangulate the results. Seven fatherless women were interviewed to arrive at a better understanding of how father absence informed their romantic relational experiences. Specifically, the topics of relationship roles, self-disclosure, expression, and self-silencing in romantic relationships were examined in the interviews. Participants reflected on what growing up fatherless meant to them and whether or not this had any influence on the role …

Predicting Work And Organizational Engagement With Work And Personal Factors, Andrea Kittredge Jan 2010

Predicting Work And Organizational Engagement With Work And Personal Factors, Andrea Kittredge

Master's Theses

The current study examined how psychological hardiness and self efficacy would be related to both work engagement and organizational engagement after controlling for job characteristics, perceived organizational support, and procedural justice as work characteristics. Findings showed that psychological hardiness, specifically commitment, added significant predictive value to both work and organizational engagement after controlling for the work characteristics. However, commitment accounted for more variance in work engagement than variance in organizational engagement. Although it was correlated with overall hardiness, self efficacy was not found to be directly related to either engagement variable, nor did it add predictive value to either of …

Difference And Accommodation In Visigothic Gaul And Spain, Craig H. Schamp Jan 2010

Difference And Accommodation In Visigothic Gaul And Spain, Craig H. Schamp

Master's Theses

This thesis examines primary sources in fifth- and sixth-century Gaul and Spain and finds a surprising lack of concern for ethnicity. Authors in the fifth century expressed concern for the sanctity and safety of the church, their patria, and themselves, but seldom mention any issues that could be related to ethnicity. Even the Arian Christianity of the Goths seems to be of little or no concern. This changes in the middle of the sixth century, when Arian Christianity becomes an overarching issue in Visigothic history. The sources portray nearly every political concern in the second half of the sixth century …

The Vaccinia Virus Complement Control Protein Modulates Adaptive Immune Responses During Infection, N. M. Girgis, Brian Dehaven Jan 2010

The Vaccinia Virus Complement Control Protein Modulates Adaptive Immune Responses During Infection, N. M. Girgis, Brian Dehaven

Biology Faculty Scholarship

Complement activation is an important component of the innate immune response against viral infection and also shapes adaptive immune responses. Despite compelling evidence that complement activation enhances T cell and antibody (Ab) responses during viral infection, it is unknown whether inhibition of complement by pathogens alters these responses. Vaccinia virus (VACV) modulates complement activation by encoding a complement regulatory protein called the vaccinia virus complement control protein (VCP). Although VCP has been described as a virulence factor, the mechanisms by which VCP enhances VACV pathogenesis have not been fully defined. Since complement is necessary for optimal adaptive immune responses to …

First delivered as a paper at the Poe conference in Philadelphia in 2009, this extended version reveals how Poe's mesmeric tale can help us rethink trauma theory before Freud. Poe's strategic use of archival materials concerning an 18th-century insurrection in India provides compelling insight into the transmission of affect in the construction of global histories. --author-supplied description

Regulating Polygamy: Intimacy, Default Rules, And Bargaining For Equality, Adrienne D. Davis Jan 2010

Regulating Polygamy: Intimacy, Default Rules, And Bargaining For Equality, Adrienne D. Davis

Scholarship@WashULaw

Most legal scholarship about polygamy has approached it in one of two ways. Some have framed it as a question of how far constitutional protection for religious freedom and privacy rights extends, including what we might think of as “intimacy liberty,” particularly in light of Lawrence v. Texas. Others have debated decriminalization, based on the contested effects of polygamy on matters ranging from women’s subordination to fraudulent behavior to democracy. This Essay shifts attention from the constitutionality and decriminalization debates to a new set of questions: whether and how polygamy might be effectively recognized and regulated, consistent with contemporary social …

Making Up Is Hard To Do: Race/Gender/Sexual Orientation In The Law School Classroom, Adrienne D. Davis, Robert S. Chang Jan 2010

Making Up Is Hard To Do: Race/Gender/Sexual Orientation In The Law School Classroom, Adrienne D. Davis, Robert S. Chang

Scholarship@WashULaw

This exchange of letters picks up where Professors Adrienne Davis and Robert Chang left off in an earlier exchange that examined who speaks, who is allowed to speak, and what is remembered. Here, Professors Davis and Chang explore the dynamics of race, gender, and sexual orientation in the law school classroom. They compare the experiences of African American women and Asian American men in trying to perform as law professors, considering how makeup and other gender tools simultaneously assist and hinder such performances. Their exchange examines the possibility of bias that complicates the use of student evaluations in assessing teaching …

Introduction To The Symposium: The Politics Of Identity After Identity Politics, Adrienne D. Davis Jan 2010

Introduction To The Symposium: The Politics Of Identity After Identity Politics, Adrienne D. Davis

Scholarship@WashULaw

The Essays in this volume seek to shed some light on the politics of identity after the 2008 Presidential election in which identity politics dominated. To explore how 2008 and its aftermath have shifted both academic and political debates, Professor Adrienne Davis invited scholars from a variety of disciplines who embrace diverse methodologies—political theory; cultural studies; history; and law. These authors explore identity politics as a field of academic inquiry; a cultural discourse; a legal claim; a negotiation of institutions and power; and a predicate for political alliances. Collectively, the Articles both develop new frameworks and intervene in old ones …

Three Snapshots Of Scholarly Engagement: Catharine Mackinnon’S Ethical Entrenchment, Transformative Politics, And Personal Commitment, Adrienne D. Davis Jan 2010

Three Snapshots Of Scholarly Engagement: Catharine Mackinnon’S Ethical Entrenchment, Transformative Politics, And Personal Commitment, Adrienne D. Davis

Scholarship@WashULaw

One of Catharine MacKinnon's germinal works calls attention to the political effects of modifiers. So, I was intrigued by the modifier of the conference panel that sparked this essay, the "engaged" scholar. I was struck by the quite distinct connotations invoked by this modifier. Of course there is the use I believe was envisioned by the plenary organizers as characterizing Professor MacKinnon's stunning body of legal work: engaged as in connected to something, seriously paying attention to consequences, rigorous and sustained involvement with a subject. Yet there are other connotations of engaged that I think are also helpful in understanding …

Heat Stress Evaluation Of Protective Clothing Ensembles, Amanda Lee Pease Jan 2010

Heat Stress Evaluation Of Protective Clothing Ensembles, Amanda Lee Pease

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Clothing directly affects the level of heat stress exposure. Useful measures to express the thermal characteristics are WBGT (wet bulb globe temperature) clothing adjustment factor (CAF) or apparent total evaporative resistance (Re,T,a). The CAF is assigned through laboratory wear trials following a heat stress protocol in which the air temperature and humidity are progressively increased until the participant clearly loses the ability to maintain thermal equilibrium. The critical condition is the point of thermal transition and from these conditions both the CAF and Re,T,a are computed. The first objective of this study is to compare the …

A Mixed-Methods Research Study Comparing Observations During Integrated Curriculum Lessons With Traditional Single-Subject Lessons For Primary-Age Students, Ksenia Sergeevna Zhbanova Jan 2010

A Mixed-Methods Research Study Comparing Observations During Integrated Curriculum Lessons With Traditional Single-Subject Lessons For Primary-Age Students, Ksenia Sergeevna Zhbanova

Graduate Research Papers

This study examined teacher talk and actions under two conditions: ( 1) subject-integrated lessons of an integrated curriculum unit on African culture ( experimental condition); and (2) single subject-focused lessons of a traditional separate subject curriculum on mathematics time and money measurement (control condition). The study sought to define and compare characteristics of both curriculum approaches. Although the study was primarily qualitative with observations being recorded by the researcher that were subsequently sorted into categories through a constant comparison method, counts of frequency of observations in categories were recorded, resulting in a mixed-methods design.

The observations were collected in two …

Bankruptcy—Exemptions: When An Interested Party Must Object, And Exempting Property With The Intention Of Retaining Possession, Jonathan L. Voigt Jan 2010

Bankruptcy—Exemptions: When An Interested Party Must Object, And Exempting Property With The Intention Of Retaining Possession, Jonathan L. Voigt

North Dakota Law Review

Schwab v. Reilly, 130 S. Ct. 2652 (2010)In Schwab v. Reilly, the United States Supreme Court partially frustrated the primary purpose of bankruptcy by making it more difficult for the debtor to exempt property itself, rather than a liquidated interest in that property. The Supreme Court held that when a debtor lists the value of the property the debtor wishes to exempt as equal to the fair market value of the property as listed on the debtor’s schedules, the debtor has not effectively exempted the property itself, but rather only an interest in the property up to the value the …

3d Visualization Of Hiv Virions By Cryoelectron Tomography, Jun Liu, Elizabeth R Wright, Hanspeter Winkler

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

The structure of the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and some of its components have been difficult to study in three-dimensions (3D) primarily because of their intrinsic structural variability. Recent advances in cryoelectron tomography (cryo-ET) have provided a new approach for determining the 3D structures of the intact virus, the HIV capsid, and the envelope glycoproteins located on the viral surface. A number of cryo-ET procedures related to specimen preservation, data collection, and image processing are presented in this chapter. The techniques described herein are well suited for determining the ultrastructure of bacterial and viral pathogens and their associated molecular machines …

More Than Synaptic Plasticity: Role Of Nonsynaptic Plasticity In Learning And Memory, Riccardo Mozzachiodi, John H Byrne

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Decades of research on the cellular mechanisms of memory have led to the widely held view that memories are stored as modifications of synaptic strength. These changes involve presynaptic processes, such as direct modulation of the release machinery, or postsynaptic processes, such as modulation of receptor properties. Parallel studies have revealed that memories might also be stored by nonsynaptic processes, such as modulation of voltage-dependent membrane conductances, which are expressed as changes in neuronal excitability. Although in some cases nonsynaptic changes can function as part of the engram itself, they might also serve as mechanisms through which a neural circuit …

A Fall From Grace: United States V. W.R. Grace And The Need For Criminal Discovery Reform, Andrew King-Ries, Beth Brennan Jan 2010

A Fall From Grace: United States V. W.R. Grace And The Need For Criminal Discovery Reform, Andrew King-Ries, Beth Brennan

Faculty Law Review Articles

This article examines several 2009 cases involving prosecutorial misconduct arising from the federal government's failure to live up to its criminal discovery obligations. The article focuses specifically on U.S. v. W.R. Grace, a Clean Air Act criminal case in Montana. The authors' analysis of Grace and other cases suggests that the absence of a clear, enforceable rule jeopardizes the government's ability to fairly prosecute its cases and supports amending Rule 16 to eliminate the gap between prosecutors' legal and ethical duties, and to require the pretrial disclosure of evidence favorable to the defendant.

A Bittersweet Heritage: Learning From The Making Of South African Legal Culture, Stephen Ellmann Jan 2010

A Bittersweet Heritage: Learning From The Making Of South African Legal Culture, Stephen Ellmann

Articles & Chapters

This essay responds to Martin Chanock's argument that race tainted the entire enterprise of South African judging. It seeks to understand how that could have been so, and looks to such driving forces as whites' guilt, denial, identity-building, self-protection, and legitimation for explanations. Then it asks whether an institution so tainted should now be altogether abandoned as part of the rebuilding of post-apartheid South Africa. The essay answers that much should be changed, but that the existence of a judiciary laying claim to a special expertise and responsibility in interpreting law and protecting rights a key heritage of the old …
