Dustbowl, Patrick Scott Harned Dec 2010

Dustbowl, Patrick Scott Harned

Theses

Dustbowl is a dystopian novel that follows a young man named Ward as he joins a deadly cult that is intent on leaving the planet. He travels with a cleaning crew—a group of killers—through small towns, abducting children for the cult’s plan to have humankind populate the stars. The novel explores concepts like loneliness, grief, violence, love, and family, among others, as Ward traverses across a dust-filled, shambling American Midwest that is falling apart all around him. He finds solace from the harshness of the world in his crewmates, in a stray dog that he happens upon, in a girl …

Volatile Organic Compound Emissions From Larrea Tridentata (Creosotebush), K. Jardine, L. Abrell, S. A. Kurc, T. Huxman, J. Ortega, A. Guenther

Environmental Science and Geology Faculty Research Publications

We present results from the CREosote ATmosphere Interactions through Volatile Emissions (CREATIVE 2009) field study in southern Arizona aimed at quantifying emission rates of VOCs from creosotebush (Larrea tridentata) during the summer 2009 monsoon season. This species was chosen because of its vast distribution in North and South American deserts and because its resins have been reported to contain a rich set of volatile organic compounds (VOC). While a variety of ecosystems have been investigated for VOC emissions, deserts remain essentially unstudied, partially because of their low biomass densities and water limitations. However, during the North American monsoon, …

Quantifying Canal Leakage Rates Using A Mass-Balance Approach And Heat-Based Hydraulic Conductivity Estimates In Selected Irrigation Canals, Western Nebraska, 2007 Through 2009, Christopher M. Hobza, Michael J. Andersen

United States Geological Survey: Water Reports and Publications

The water supply in areas of the North Platte River Basin in the Nebraska Panhandle has been designated as fully appropriated or overappropriated by the Nebraska Department of Natural Resources (NDNR). Enacted legislation (Legislative Bill 962) requires the North Platte Natural Resources District (NPNRD) and the NDNR to develop an Integrated Management Plan (IMP) to balance groundwater and surface-water supply and demand in the NPNRD. A clear understanding of the groundwater and surface-water systems is critical for the development of a successful IMP. The primary source of groundwater recharge in parts of the NPNRD is from irrigation canal leakage. Because …

Environmental Consciousness: Human Motivation For Thinking Ecologically, Rob Pigue Dec 2010

Environmental Consciousness: Human Motivation For Thinking Ecologically, Rob Pigue

Student Theses 2001-2013

What is the motivation for acting environmentally? Why do people care? What is the reason for buying fluorescent bulbs and hybrid cars, energy efficient appliances and reusable water bottles? Why is it that people turn off the lights when they leave a room, turn off the faucet while brushing their teeth, and go through the inconvenience of recycling?

Humans are known to act out of self-interest. Regardless of what people do or why they do it, their motivation can always be traced back to personal gain.

So why go green? Nothing about reducing, reusing, or recycling has any direct impact …

Minimum Description Length Measures Of Evidence For Enrichment, Zhenyu Yang, David R. Bickel Dec 2010

Minimum Description Length Measures Of Evidence For Enrichment, Zhenyu Yang, David R. Bickel

COBRA Preprint Series

In order to functionally interpret differentially expressed genes or other discovered features, researchers seek to detect enrichment in the form of overrepresentation of discovered features associated with a biological process. Most enrichment methods treat the p-value as the measure of evidence using a statistical test such as the binomial test, Fisher's exact test or the hypergeometric test. However, the p-value is not interpretable as a measure of evidence apart from adjustments in light of the sample size. As a measure of evidence supporting one hypothesis over the other, the Bayes factor (BF) overcomes this drawback of the p-value but lacks …

Nesting Ecology Of The Mississippi And Swallow-Tailed Kite In White River National Wildlife Refuge, Arkansas, Scott James Chiavacci Dec 2010

Nesting Ecology Of The Mississippi And Swallow-Tailed Kite In White River National Wildlife Refuge, Arkansas, Scott James Chiavacci

Student Theses and Dissertations

The Swallow-tailed (Elanoides forficatus; STKI) and Mississippi kite (Ictinia mississippiensis; MIKI) both express relatively poor reproductive success in White River National Wildlife Refuge (WRNWR), east-central Arkansas. I studied the nesting ecology of both species in WRNWR to determine factors contributing to their low nest survival. I located 41 MIKI nests from 2008-2009 and documented 8 causes of nest failure. The overall estimated probability of nest survival was ~25%, but estimated daily nest survival varied between nest periods among and across years. I found no consistent predictors of nest survival among the variables I measured. Also, I determined snake excluder devices, …

Maintenance For Stormwater Treatment Practices, Andrew J. Erickson, John S. Gulliver, Joo-Hyon Kang, Peter T. Weiss, C. Bruce Wilson Dec 2010

Maintenance For Stormwater Treatment Practices, Andrew J. Erickson, John S. Gulliver, Joo-Hyon Kang, Peter T. Weiss, C. Bruce Wilson

Journal of Contemporary Water Research and Education

Maintenance is imperative to preserve performance and extend useable life of stormwater treatment practices. Increased attention to mass balance, numerical goals, total maximum daily loads (TMDLs), and antidegradation requirements has created the need for more emphasis on stormwater treatment practice maintenance in order to meet permitting and reporting requirements. The purpose of this paper is to advance short and long-term maintenance considerations so as to develop more realistic maintenance plans. To do so, a municipal public works survey was developed, distributed, and the results were analyzed. The results of the survey revealed that most (61 percent) cities and counties perform …

Demographics, Self-Efficacy, And Engagement Of First-Generation Students Enrolled In Online Community College Classes In Arkansas, James Christopher Boyett

Student Theses and Dissertations

Students whose parents did not attend college, known as "first generation students," have been studied extensively. Meanwhile, many researchers have examined students taking online courses. However, little has been done to focus on the intersection of these two fields of research - first generation students who take online courses. This study of students enrolled in Arkansas community college online courses focused on the following research questions: (1) What percentage of community college general education online students are first generation (FG) students? (2) How does the demographic background of FG online students compare to non-first generation (NFG) online students? (3) How …

Integration Of Education, Scholarship, And Service Through Stormwater Management, Andrea L. Welker, Bridget M. Wadzuk, Robert G. Traver

Journal of Contemporary Water Research and Education

Education, scholarship, and service are the cornerstones of academia. This paper describes how the design, construction, and research of stormwater control measures on the campus of Villanova University has been used to integrate these three facets of academic life. To date, eleven stormwater control measures have been constructed on Villanova's campus. This paper will focus on how the authors have successfully used three of these stormwater control measures, a constructed stormwater wetland, a rain garden, and a porous asphalt/pervious concrete comparison study, to fulfil the university's commitments to education, scholarship, and service.
