Resilience In Western Australian Adolescents: A Model Of The Processes That Occur Between Risk And Success, Mandie B. Shean
Resilience In Western Australian Adolescents: A Model Of The Processes That Occur Between Risk And Success, Mandie B. Shean
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
The aim of this research was to develop a model that represents how adolescents in the Western Australian context navigate their way to resilience. Resilience was defined as “the outcome from negotiations between individuals and their environments for the resources to define themselves as healthy amidst conditions collectively viewed as adverse” (Ungar, 2004a, p. 342). The philosophical approach was social constructivist and the methodology was mixed, employing both qualitative and quantitative methodologies through grounded theory. The techniques used to gather data included interviewing, focus groups, and questionnaires. There were three stages in the research: namely, developing the model of resilience, …
Conceptualising Bullying In An Aboriginal Context As Reported By The Yamaji Community, To Inform The Development Of A Bullying Prevention Program That Is Culturally Sensitive To The Needs Of Aboriginal Students, Juli Coffin
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
The Solid Kids Solid Schools project aimed to capture the unheard voices of Aboriginal children and community members on the issues surrounding ‘bullying’. In an Aboriginal context bullying is different and the outcomes are different, yet mainstream programs are utilized to combat the issue. We need to know how bullying is different for Aboriginal children and young people, why it is different and what does this difference mean in terms of addressing this issue in a school and community setting? A community based steering group guided the direction of this study and the larger Solid Kids Solid Schools project. Snowball …
Rewiring Head And Heart : An Investigation Into The Efficacy Of A Clinical Psychotherapeutic Modality For The Treatment Of Depression, Genevieve Milnes
Rewiring Head And Heart : An Investigation Into The Efficacy Of A Clinical Psychotherapeutic Modality For The Treatment Of Depression, Genevieve Milnes
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
This is a presentation of the psychotherapeutic treatment modality, „Rewiring Head & Heart (Rewiring)‟ that combines cognitive therapy (“head”) with psychodynamic exercises (“heart”) into an evidence-based clinical treatment modality for use by therapists. This study extends previous research conducted by Milnes (1998). Descriptions of the origins of the treatment modality, the underpinning theoretical framework, and practical application in the Rewiring Manual are followed by an empirical investigation of its efficacy on a sample of adults with depressed mood, before discussing case studies and issues of clinical application of Rewiring. Rewiring consists of two contributing elements – Cognitive Fluency (CF) and …

Consuming Online Communities : Computer Operating Systems, Identity And Resistance, Gregory C. Stratton
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
A defining feature of the modern era of computer technologies has been a massive reliance upon the mass consumption of personal operating system software. Currently three products dominate how the world experiences computer operating system – Microsoft‘s Windows, Apple‘s Mac, and Linux. The near monopoly held by Windows has been a crucial enabler of the ICT revolution, while the small but significant markets held by Mac and Linux provide alternatives to Windows monoculture. Aside from their technical differences each offers distinct examples of modern-day branding, with individuals forming communities in which members signify their allegiance with these products. This thesis …

Low Back Pain In Schoolgirl Rowers: Prevalence, Bio-Psycho-Social Factors And Prevention, Debra Perich
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
Rowing is one of the largest participant sports on the Independent Girls‟ Schools Sporting Association (IGSSA) in Western Australia with approximately 400 participants competing every year. Rowing is an extra-curricular sport offered to girls 14 years of age and above, with these girls competing and training in both sweep and scull boats. Whilst the benefits of regular physical activity and exercise are well known, musculoskeletal problems have been documented in rowing. In particular, clinical evidence and previous research suggests that low back pain (LBP) is common in rowers. Adolescents who suffer from LBP are at an increased risk of recurrent …

Improving The Aesthetic And Other Experiential Design Aspects Of Bicycle Paths In Western Australia, Anthony W. Stephens
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
Governments around Australia are in the process of promoting cycling as both a sustainable form of transport that can be a viable alternative to the motor vehicle, particularly for shorter trips, and as a healthy recreational pursuit that can play an important role in addressing the growing problem of obesity and illnesses associated with a sedentary lifestyle in the community. As part of this initiative, the development of effective and efficient infrastructure for bicycles is seen as a vital step for achieving higher participation rates.
A major component of the nation’s bicycle infrastructure is the growing networks of paved paths …
Dissipating Hostility Through Feminine Rhetorical Style, Bethany Lynne Doran
Dissipating Hostility Through Feminine Rhetorical Style, Bethany Lynne Doran
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
This study uses Karlyn Campbell's concept of feminine rhetorical style as a theoretical framework for analyzing the rhetoric of Barbara Bush's 1990 Wellesley College commencement address. Through a systematic evaluation of Barbara Bush's speech, this study reveals that her rhetoric exemplifies feminine rhetorical style. The analysis also concludes that Barbara Bush's personal tone, specifically her use of narrative and humor, is the most useful and effective characteristic of her feminine rhetorical style. Using feminine rhetorical style, Barbara Bush successfully dissipates some of the tension she faced prior to the graduation ceremony at Wellesley College. Therefore, this study reveals that feminine …

The Influence Of Belief In The Supernatural And Perceptions Of Religious, Spiritual, Or Natural Explanations On Ratings Of Positive Affect, Negative Affect, And Intelligence, Virginia A. Periss
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
Living in complex social environments consists not only of sets of individuals with their own dyadic relationships but also whose own dyadic relationships with other group members must be observed and inferred from. Credibility enhancing displays may provide one effective tool for dealing with complex social environments by extracting and integrating adaptive information from an immense range of potential social partners. Organized religious beliefs typical of routine rituals and standardized religious ideologies may serve as one type of credibility cue. The aim of this study was to assess how others judge adult's expressing a religious, spiritual, or natural explanation on …
Multidisciplined Individuals: Defining The Genre, Jacqueline Rhoda Rogers
Multidisciplined Individuals: Defining The Genre, Jacqueline Rhoda Rogers
Plymouth Business School Theses
Much of literature is predicated upon the assumption that learning occurring inside the workplace is related to developing expertise associated with the tasks for which the individual is employed and has a background in. This research investigates those individuals who acquire expertise in other disciplines and how the application of that additional expertise changes and enhances the individual and the organisation. By combining perspectives across the disciplinary boundaries and developing multidisciplinary expertise, these individuals demonstrate better methods of achieving business objectives, leading to faster, more imaginative solutions, more frequently, and with significantly less effort. The literature review commenced with defining …
A Bi-Regional Cge Model Of The South West Housing Market, Sarah-Jane Keast
A Bi-Regional Cge Model Of The South West Housing Market, Sarah-Jane Keast
Plymouth Business School Theses
Volatility within the UK housing market is thought to be a significant factor driving instability in the wider macro economy. Research investigating the characteristics and behaviour of the housing market has suggested that under supply of housing is one of the key reasons for the high and increasing levels of house prices the nation has recently been experiencing. Consequently, much of the current government's housing policy is aimed at increasing the level of supply by reforming the planning system and increasing investment in the development of new housing. Under supply is also a major concern at the regional level, particularly …
Presidential Disability And The Twenty-Fifth Amendment: The Difficulties Posed By Psychological Illness, Robert E. Gilbert
Presidential Disability And The Twenty-Fifth Amendment: The Difficulties Posed By Psychological Illness, Robert E. Gilbert
Fordham Law Review
This article describes occasions when presidents have suffered from psychological illness and analyzes the challenges posed by psychological illness in presidents. It begins with an explanation of the Twenty-Fifth Amendment’s provisions and an overview of significant cases of presidents suffering physical illnesses. Next, the Article turns its focus to two presidents, Franklin Pierce (1853-1857) and Calvin Coolidge (1923-1929), who suffered psychological illnesses that were perhaps even more debilitating than the physical ailments that other presidents suffered. These cases are then contrasted with President Abraham Lincoln, who, unlike Pierce and Coolidge, had a highly successful presidency despite appearing to suffer from …
Extensions On The Twenty-Fifth Amendment: The Influence Of Biological Factors On Assessments Of Impairment, Rose Mcdermott
Extensions On The Twenty-Fifth Amendment: The Influence Of Biological Factors On Assessments Of Impairment, Rose Mcdermott
Fordham Law Review
Because the framers of the Twenty-Fifth Amendment were so prescient in their creation of this legislation, it behooves subsequent scholars to examine additional potential concerns that would not have entered the debate forty years ago. Huge advances have been made in the area of biological and genetic medical knowledge, and this progress could not have been foreseen at the time the original Amendment was written. Yet in the interim, such information has become much more accessible. It becomes important to raise these questions moving forward because political opponents may take advantage of these new concerns, as they arise, and use …
The Cafa Mass Action Numerosity Requirement: Three Problems With Counting To 100, Guyon Knight
The Cafa Mass Action Numerosity Requirement: Three Problems With Counting To 100, Guyon Knight
Fordham Law Review
This Note examines the mass action provision of the Class Action Fairness Act of 2005 (CAFA) and the difficulties courts have encountered when applying its seemingly simple 100-person numerosity requirement. “Mass actions” are a broad category of nonclass aggregate litigation over which CAFA extended federal jurisdiction. This Note examines three interpretations of the numerosity requirement advanced in recent cases. These interpretations have advocated, in turn, not finding a mass action when a case has more than 100 formally joined plaintiffs, recognizing the existence of a single mass action broken up among parallel suits with fewer than 100 plaintiffs, and finding …

Getting A Fix On Cocaine Sentencing Policy: Reforming The Sentencing Scheme Of The Anti-Drug Abuse Act Of 1986, Alyssa L. Beaver
Fordham Law Review
The now-infamous “War on Drugs” campaign of the 1980s culminated in the adoption of the Anti-Drug Abuse Act of 1986, which included a provision for a one-hundred-to-one sentencing ratio of powder cocaine to crack cocaine. This ratio provides that the penalty for a crime involving five or ten grams of crack cocaine is equivalent to the sentence for a crime involving five hundred or one thousand grams of powder cocaine. This structure has led to a racial disparity in sentencing because African Americans are more often charged with a crack cocaine offense than Caucasians, who are usually indicted for powder …
Skeptical Internationalism: A Study Of Whether International Law Is Law, Joshua Kleinfeld
Skeptical Internationalism: A Study Of Whether International Law Is Law, Joshua Kleinfeld
Fordham Law Review
Should international law be understood as a form of law at all? The premise here is that if we are to get some purchase on that question, we should consult the experience of international law in operation. The analysis proceeds in two steps. First, the Article takes up the litigation connected to the Israeli/West Bank barrier, asking whether that case was or could have been addressed in such a way as to keep faith with minimal principles of legality. It wasn’t, the Article finds, but it could have been. Second, the Article specifies four values that are constitutive elements of …
The Rocky Path For Private Directors General: Procedure, Politics, And The Uncertain Future Of Eu Antitrust Damages Actions, Marc A. Sittenreich
The Rocky Path For Private Directors General: Procedure, Politics, And The Uncertain Future Of Eu Antitrust Damages Actions, Marc A. Sittenreich
Fordham Law Review
For the better part of the past decade, the European Commission has engaged in a dialogue with European Union (EU) citizens and businesses in an attempt to strengthen an almost nonexistent private competition enforcement system. In the United States, where private antitrust lawsuits are most prevalent, litigation is justified on the grounds of both deterrence and compensation. While the Commission wants to make private damages actions the primary vehicle for the compensation of aggrieved parties, recent political pressure has made EU officials claim that government enforcement will remain the predominant means for the deterrence of EU antitrust violations. Furthermore, many …

Nepa At The Limits Of Risk Assessment: Whether To Discuss A Potential Terrorist Attack On A Nuclear Power Plant Under The National Environment Policy Act, Michael Hill
Fordham Law Review
This Note explores the question of whether to address the environmental impacts of a potential terrorist attack on a nuclear power plant under the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA). The Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit assert that the risk of terrorism is unquantifiable and too remote to warrant consideration under NEPA. In contrast, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit concludes that the risk is foreseeable enough that it cannot be disregarded as a matter of law and that a qualitative discussion of a range of potential impacts is …

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
Seven percent of the national four year college population is involved in Greek Life (Microsoft Encarta Online Encyclopedia, 2008, ~5) with over sixty percent on some campuses (Finkel, 201 0). An often unexamined aspect of collegiate learning pertaining to this context is students' spiritual development, yet this is a vital part of a student's life throughout college and critical to whole student learning (Love & Talbot, 2005). Students report a high level of interest in spiritual activities while struggling with existential questions on a regular basis (Higher Education Research Institute, 2003). Most social fraternities and sororities embrace Christian ideals, making …

The purpose of this study is to investigate the use of web-based concept maps as a communications and problem-solving tool in an online graduate level course. The study used an exploratory-descriptive research design that applied a qualitative methods approach in order to explore how concept maps foster collaborative problem-solving activities in an online learning environment. Three of the five groups participating in the study effectively used concept mapping, which they combined with other communication strategies such as eliciting group suggestions, asking questions, and brainstorming ideas, to reach consensus and solve the CBR project required. These results indicate that concept maps …
Infants’ Discrimination Of Familiar And Unfamiliar Accents In Speech, Caroline Floccia, Jeremy Goslin, Joseph Butler, Robin Panneton
Infants’ Discrimination Of Familiar And Unfamiliar Accents In Speech, Caroline Floccia, Jeremy Goslin, Joseph Butler, Robin Panneton
School of Psychology
This study investigates infants’ discrimination abilities for familiar and unfamiliar regional English accents. Using a variation of the head-turn preference procedure, 5-month-old infants demonstrated that they were able to distinguish between their own South-West English accent and an unfamiliar Welsh English accent. However, this distinction was not seen when two unfamiliar accents (Welsh English and Scottish English) were presented to the infants, indicating they had not acquired the general ability to distinguish between regional varieties, but only the distinction between their home accent and unfamiliar regional variations. This ability was also confirmed with 7-month-olds, challenging recent claims that infants lose …

Neuronal Network Pharmacodynamics Of Gabaergic Modulation In The Human Cortex Determined Using Pharmaco-Magnetoencephalography., Stephen D. Hall, Gareth R. Barnes, Paul L. Furlong, Stefano Seri, Arjan Hillebrand
School of Psychology
Neuronal network oscillations are a unifying phenomenon in neuroscience research, with comparable measurements across scales and species. Cortical oscillations are of central importance in the characterization of neuronal network function in health and disease and are influential in effective drug development. Whilst animal in vitro and in vivo electrophysiology is able to characterize pharmacologically induced modulations in neuronal activity, present human counterparts have spatial and temporal limitations. Consequently, the potential applications for a human equivalent are extensive. Here, we demonstrate a novel implementation of contemporary neuroimaging methods called pharmaco-magnetoencephalography. This approach determines the spatial profile of neuronal network oscillatory power …

When Not Thinking Leads To Being And Doing: Stereotype Suppression And The Self, Na Wyer, G Mazzoni, Tj Perfect, G Calvini, Hl Neilens
School of Psychology
Suppressing stereotypes often results in more stereotype use, an effect attributed to heightened stereotype activation. The authors report two experiments examining the consequences of suppression on two self-relevant outcomes: the active self-concept and overt behavior. Participants who suppressed stereotypes incorporated stereotypic traits into their self-concepts and demonstrated stereotype-congruent behavior compared to those who were exposed to the same stereotypes but did not suppress them. These findings address issues emerging from current theories of suppression, priming, and the active self.
