Reality's Unrealities: The Magical Real In Selected Plays Of Tennessee Williams, Elena Lee Mcpherson
Reality's Unrealities: The Magical Real In Selected Plays Of Tennessee Williams, Elena Lee Mcpherson
Honors Theses
After a semester of studying more than ten of Tennessee Williams plays, 1 decided to explore a selection of his plays in the context of magical realism. Initially, the connection between a playwright from the Southern United States and the literary tradition of Latin America seemed distant Upon further research and closer readings, however, I found that Tennessee Williams's plays The Glass Menagerie, Orpheus Descending, and Camino Real all exemplify various characteristics of the magical real within new contexts. In keeping with the tradition of magical realism. each of the plays uniquely exhibits the fantastic to speak to larger truths …
On The Ethics Of Human Genetic Engineering, John Ryan Speights
On The Ethics Of Human Genetic Engineering, John Ryan Speights
Honors Theses
In this paper I propose a guideline that we may use to determine when it is ethical to take advantage of the technology that we call human genetic engineering. I first clarify the purpose of the paper by explaining the science behind the technology, defining much of the debate in the process. In short, manufactured DNA is introduced into the human genome for the purpose of modifying the expression of the genes and the person that they produce. I indicate that this is a value theory paper rather than a detailed policy paper. This is significant because it merely addresses …

Voting As Veto, Michael S. Kang
Voting As Veto, Michael S. Kang
Michigan Law Review
This Article introduces an alternate conception of voting as vetobased on "negative preferences" against a voter's least preferred outcomes-that enriches voting theory and practice otherwise dominated by a conception of voting as a means of expressing a voter's ideal preferences. Indeed, the familiar binary choices presented in American political elections obscure the pervasiveness of negative preferences, which are descriptively salient in voting under all types of circumstances. Negative preferences have been overlooked, despite their theoretical and practical importance across many domains, leaving important questions unexplored in the literature. The Article develops a normative and positive account of voting as veto …
Why (And When) Judges Dissent: A Theoretical And Empirical Analysis, Richard A. Posner, William M. Landes, Lee Epstein
Why (And When) Judges Dissent: A Theoretical And Empirical Analysis, Richard A. Posner, William M. Landes, Lee Epstein
Coase-Sandor Institute for Law & Economics Research Paper Series
This paper develops and tests a model of self-interested judicial behavior to explore the phenomenon of judicial dissents, and in particular what we call "dissent aversion," which sometimes causes a judge not to dissent even when he disagrees with the majority opinion. We examine dissent aversion using data from both the federal courts of appeals and the U.S. Supreme Court. Our empirical findings are consistent with the predictions of the model. In the court of appeals, the frequency of dissents is negatively related to the caseload and positively related to ideological diversity among judges in the circuit and circuit size …
What Do Federal District Judges Want? An Analysis Of Publications, Citations, And Reversals, Eric A. Posner, Stephen J. Choi, G. Mitu Gulati
What Do Federal District Judges Want? An Analysis Of Publications, Citations, And Reversals, Eric A. Posner, Stephen J. Choi, G. Mitu Gulati
Coase-Sandor Institute for Law & Economics Research Paper Series
We report evidence from a dataset of federal district judges from 2001 to 2002 that district judges adjust their opinion-writing practices to minimize their workload while maximizing their reputation and chance for elevation to a higher court. District judges in circuits with politically uniform circuit judges are better able to predict what opinions will get affirmed by the circuit court, leading to higher publication rates and a higher affirmance rate. In contrast, district judges in circuits with politically diverse circuit judges are less able to predict the preferences of the reviewing circuit court panel, leading district judges to publish fewer …
Does Service Matter? An Examination Of Donor Perceptions Of Service Quality In College Athletics, Stephen L. Shapiro
Does Service Matter? An Examination Of Donor Perceptions Of Service Quality In College Athletics, Stephen L. Shapiro
Human Movement Studies & Special Education Faculty Publications
Service quality has been recognized as a strategic tool for improving organizational performance. Many non-profit organizations have taken a market-based approach to fundraising, which enhances the importance of service excellence. The purpose of this investigation was to examine donor perceptions of service quality in college athletics. First, an adapted version of Sargeant's (2001) non-profit service quality instrument was examined to assess its appropriateness within the context of college athletic donors. Confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) and validity and reliability analyses provided evidence of an adequate model fit. Subsequently, three multiple linear regression models were developed to examine the relationship between service …
Review Of Law At The Vanishing Point By Aaron Fichtelberg, Robert D. Sloane
Review Of Law At The Vanishing Point By Aaron Fichtelberg, Robert D. Sloane
Faculty Scholarship
This is a largely critical review of Professor Aaron Fichtelberg’s philosophical analysis of international law. The centerpiece of the book’s affirmative agenda, a “non-reductionist” definition of international law that purports to elide various forms of international law skepticism, strikes the reviewer as circular, misguided in general, and, in its application to substantive international legal issues, difficult to distinguish from a rote form of legal positivism. Law at the Vanishing Point’s avowed empirical methodology and critical agenda, while largely unobjectionable, offer little that has not been said before, often with equal if not greater force. I commend the author’s effort to …
Using Knowledge Of Student Cognition To Differentiate Instruction, Silvana M.R. Watson, Robert A. Gable
Using Knowledge Of Student Cognition To Differentiate Instruction, Silvana M.R. Watson, Robert A. Gable
Human Movement Studies & Special Education Faculty Publications
By all accounts, learning is a complex task that requires a student to use and apply a range of cognitive skills. A student's ability to retain information while performing concurrent processing, often referred to as working memory (WM), is critical to the acquisition of increasingly more complex knowledge and skills. Not surprisingly, WM is often linked to successful learning and student academic achievement. According to the academic literature, WM is a very useful measure of a student's capability to acquire new information². Most students are able to successfully respond to classroom instruction that requires them to rely on their WM …
Professors With Criminal Records: Criminology & Criminal Justice Students Views On Former Convicts As Professors, John Frana
All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations
As America's incarceration binge begins its fourth decade, one unintended consequence of this social policy has been a growing number of criminologists/sociologists who have personal experience with incarceration as many former convicts have been pursuing education as an avenue for successful re-entry. Some of these ex-convicts have begun to secure PhD's and have been conducting research as well as teaching various university courses in Sociology and/or Criminology and Criminal Justice. Within this thesis the myths maintained by society surrounding crime and prisoners will be discussed. Using survey research, students majoring in Criminology and Criminal Justice (n = 186) at ISU …
Terrorizing The 'Fortress Of London'? German Bombings, Public Pressure, And The Creation Of The British Home Defense System In World War I, Brandon Platt
All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Aeronautical warfare played a greater role in the First World War than initially given credit, forcing the British government over time to develop a competent "Home Defence" system to ward off German bombings and satisfy the British public's pressure for protection. By juxtaposing early aerial history with the British public's perceptions and the government's response, this study reveals a vital transition in the nature and perceptions of warfare during the First World War, providing a socio-military perspective rarely seen in pure military or social histories. Debunking the misconception of the reliance of aerial warfare for just scouting and reconnaissance, this …
Diagnosis Of Depersonalization Disorder, Margaret R. Dehoff
Diagnosis Of Depersonalization Disorder, Margaret R. Dehoff
All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Depersonalization Disorder (DPD) is considered both under-researched and underdiagnosed. A variety of reasons have been proposed for the under-diagnosis of DPD, including the high frequency of depersonalization as a symptom and comorbidity of DPD with other disorders. Under-diagnosis of DPD has also been attributed to inadequate diagnostic criteria in the DSM-IV-TR, as it lists only four criteria and only one specifically addresses the phenomenon of depersonalization. Several groups of researchers have proposed more comprehensive and in-depth conceptualizations of DPD. Further, common biases in clinical decision-making, such as an over-reliance on cognitive heuristics and the use of prototypes, can contribute to …
A Comparison Of The Violence Risk Appraisal Guide, Psychopathy Checklist, And Child And Adolescent Taxon Scale: Predictive Utility And Cross Cultural Generalizable, Michael Bruce Lister
A Comparison Of The Violence Risk Appraisal Guide, Psychopathy Checklist, And Child And Adolescent Taxon Scale: Predictive Utility And Cross Cultural Generalizable, Michael Bruce Lister
All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The Violence Risk Appraisal Guide (VRAG) is a widely utilized measure for estimating the risk of violent reoffending among forensic populations. However, completing the VRAG can be a lengthy process as it requires entering scores from a second test, the Psychopathy Checklist Revised (PCL-R), which must be administered separately and requires hours to complete. In order to reduce scoring time, the authors of the VRAG have developed a brief checklist, the Child and Adolescent Taxon Scale (CATS), which can be used in place of the PCL-R as a more efficient method of assessing psychopathy (Quinsey et al., 2004). Previous research …

Attitudes Toward Transsexual People: Effects Of Gender And Appearance, Kelly R. Gerhardstein
All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The transgendered community, like other gender non-conforming communities, is the subject of stigmatization, discrimination, and violence. However, there is a notable lack of research investigating the specific attitudes toward various manifestations of transgenderism, and the factors that may be contributing to these attitudes. The goal of this study was to investigate factors that contribute to negative attitudes toward, and discrimination against, this consistently marginalized group of people. The present study explored the relationship between attitudes toward transsexuals and several gender-related variables, including gender of the rater, sex and apparent gender of the transsexual, as well as gender role beliefs, personal …
Parenting A Child With Behavior Problems: Dimensions Of Religiousness That Influence Parental Stress And Sense Of Competence, Chelsea Weyand
Parenting A Child With Behavior Problems: Dimensions Of Religiousness That Influence Parental Stress And Sense Of Competence, Chelsea Weyand
All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Parenting a child with behavior problems has been associated with an increase in parental stress and a decrease in parental sense of competence. While parental religiosity has generally been associated with greater child and parent functioning, it has been suggested that when parenting a child with behavior problems, some aspects of parental religiousness (e.g., negative religious coping, biblical conservatism) might decrease functioning. One hundred and thirty-nine parents of children between the ages of three and twelve completed a questionnaire in order to examine the influence of religious variables (sanctification of parenting, negative religious coping, positive religious coping, biblical conservatism) on …

Impact Of Leadership Program On Personality Characteristics Of At-Risk Youth, Aashia M. Bade
All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The use of leadership programs as interventions for at-risk youths has recently gained attention in popular media andPsychology literature. This type of intervention presupposes that changes in personality style as well as developmental assets can be cultivated through leadership programming. Although current literature supports the benefits of mentoring and increased community involvement for at risk youths, there is limited research available about personality changes that may occur as a result of participation in leadership programs. The present study focuses on the C5 program, a five-year leadership program for at-risk youths from inner-city areas. A cross-sectional design sampling from participants in …

Perception Of Control: Accuracy Among Optimists And Pessimists On Noncontingency And Contingengy Tasks, Spencer Baum
All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The learned helplessness theory asserts that depressed individuals unrealistically believe that they have little to no control over aversive outcomes in their lives. Paradoxically, research on judgment of control has demonstrated that depressed individuals are not necessarily pessimistic, but rather more realistic than non-depressed individuals. Most of the research on depressive realism has investigated individual's perceived control in situations in which they have no actual control. Few studies have investigated perception of control in situations where control is possible. Considering that many circumstances in life are controllable, it is important to examine how different personality variables contribute to accurate judgments …

Self-Determined Mindfulness And Attachment Style In College Students, Janis Leigh
Self-Determined Mindfulness And Attachment Style In College Students, Janis Leigh
All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Does mindfulness have state-like and trait-like characteristics? How does mindfulness develop? Although mindfulness research has burgeoned within the past twenty years, these questions remain largely unanswered. Recently, the anxiety and avoidance dimensions of adult attachment have demonstrated relatedness to mindfulness (Shaver, Lavy, Saron, & Mikulincer, 2007), and secure attachment has been shown to cultivate compassion (Mikulincer & Shaver, 2005; Mikulincer, Shaver, Gillath & Nitzberg, 2005) considered by many to be an expression of mindfulness (Brach, 2003; Neff, 2003a). Furthermore, mindfulness positively correlates with autonomy, competence, and relatedness, the three primary psychological needs postulated by self-determination theory (Brown & Ryan, 2003). …
