Sight Singing With Individualized Real -Time Feedback The Efficacy Of Singing Coach In The Music Theory Classroom, D'Ariel Barnard
Sight Singing With Individualized Real -Time Feedback The Efficacy Of Singing Coach In The Music Theory Classroom, D'Ariel Barnard
Theses & ETDs
Sight singing research in the past has focused on group achievement rather than individual sight singing ability. Computer technology can provide cost-effective, individualized feedback for singers, as well as visual feedback in a real-time format, which may be a helpful tool for students who want to learn to sight sing. This study examined the effect of visual, real-time feedback from computer-assisted musical instruction provided by Singing Coach (SC) on beginning music theory students individual sight singing ability. Students practiced their sight singing skills in one of two feedback conditions: a traditional auditory control group (TA) or an experimental visual (EV) …

Race, Class, And Whiteness In Gifted And Talented Identification: A Case Study, Kathleen Barlow, C. Elaine Dunbar
Race, Class, And Whiteness In Gifted And Talented Identification: A Case Study, Kathleen Barlow, C. Elaine Dunbar
Anthropology and Museum Studies Faculty Scholarship
What began fifteen years ago as a volunteer effort to promote desegregation via a gifted and talented magnet school has become a case study analyzing inequalities in the identification of young children for gifted and talented services. We use Cheryl Harris’ (1993) argument that “whiteness” is a form of property that creates and maintains inequalities through the conjoining of race and class. We show how gifted and talented status meets the criteria of white property interests and is defended by recourse to law and policy. Efforts to improve identification of students for gifted services reveal that the implicit operation of …
The Effect Of Managerial Status On Performance Appraisal Quality And Feedback Seeking., Gary Stark
The Effect Of Managerial Status On Performance Appraisal Quality And Feedback Seeking., Gary Stark
Journal Articles
This paper compares the performance appraisal quality and feedback seeking of managers to that of non-managers. This study answers Ashford et al’s (2003) call for more research on the feedback seeking of managers, especially compared to non-managers. This study also extends work by Ashford and Tsui (1991) and Tsui et al’s (1995) on negative feedback seeking by examining the phenomenon among managers. Data were collected via survey from 355 employees of two parts of an international retail chain. Results indicate that managers receive lower quality feedback than non-managers, do not feel inhibited by the psychological and impression costs of feedback …
Torture And The Interrogation Of Detainees, James P. Terry
Torture And The Interrogation Of Detainees, James P. Terry
Campbell Law Review
Following the September 11, 2001, attack on the United States by al Qaeda, the United States captured a number of "high value" detainees who were believed to have knowledge of imminent terrorist threats against our nation and its allies. CIA operatives, who understood that the use of torture is unlawful under both international and domestic law, and above all, is abhorrent to American values, interrogated the high value detainees. The United States rejects torture as a means to garner information - a fact reflected in our domestic criminal law, but also by the country's signature on the United Nations Convention …

Is It All About The Money? Considering A Multi-Factor Test For Determining The Appropriateness Of Forced Partition Sales In North Carolina, Lawrence Anderson Moye Iv
Campbell Law Review
This Comment examines partition sales in North Carolina. First is a brief review of tenancy in common ownership and the dissolution remedy of partition. This is followed by a more detailed look into North Carolina's current partition sales statute and recent efforts to amend it. Arguments favoring and opposing the addition of a multi-factor test to the current statute will be discussed, as well as case analysis from three states whose courts consider non-economic factors when determining the appropriateness of ordering a partition sale. The conclusion critiques the arguments for and against the addition of a multi-factor test, and also …
Leadership Across Nations, Christian Plott
Leadership Across Nations, Christian Plott
Honors Capstones
More and more industries are entering into a global economy, which opens the windows of possibilities but also brings new challenges. One such challenge is leaders being able to effectively lead such a diverse group of people. The purpose of this paper is to examine different cultural dimensions of five regions, each consisting of the two or three biggest countries in that region. After those dimensions are defined within each region, leadership styles for each region will be defined. Thus giving leaders a source to turn to when faced with the task of leading those from the regions that are …

Campus Architecture And Student Culture In American Higher Education, Alexandra R. Troxell
Campus Architecture And Student Culture In American Higher Education, Alexandra R. Troxell
Honors Theses
Human-environment interaction theory, as it specifically relates to architectural determinism, has an indispensible impact on student culture on college campuses. Under the assumptions of architectural determinism, this thesis examines the relationship between architecture and student culture on 30 American college campuses. Specifically, this thesis looks at uniformity of architectural style and color and the prevalence of traditional styles of architecture in relation to the institutions' campus cultures. The results of the study found that a significant relationship exists between student culture and uniformity of building color, but not between student culture and uniformity of style or the prevalence of traditional …

Culture-Based Crimes Against Women In Societies Absorbing Immigrants - Rejecting The "Mistake Of Law" Defense And Imposing Harsher Sentencing, Gabriel Hallevy
Cardozo Journal of Equal Rights & Social Justice
The article argues that the mistake of law defense is irrelevant in cases of culture-based crimes against women, particularly honor killings, committed by immigrants in Western societies. It asserts that such crimes, often justified by cultural preservation, warrant harsher sentencing rather than leniency due to cultural ignorance. The analysis distinguishes between first-generation immigrants and refugees, emphasizing that refugees should not receive special treatment in legal accountability. The article advocates for stricter legal measures to address these crimes and minimize their occurrence.
The Relationship Between Competitive Balance And Revenue In America's Two Largest Sports Leagues, Matt D. Pautler
The Relationship Between Competitive Balance And Revenue In America's Two Largest Sports Leagues, Matt D. Pautler
CMC Senior Theses
This paper looks at the impact that competitive balance has on team revenues. The hypothesis that this paper is operating under is that higher levels of competitive balance will lead to higher levels of revenue. Two different measures of competitive balance will be used and regressions will be run to investigate whether high levels of the competitive balance measure are associated with high levels of revenue. The results of the data indicated that over all three time horizons (ten year, five year, and two year), high levels of variability in playoff appearances were associated with high revenue for Major League …

Richmond Public Interest Law Review
This Note discusses the interpretation of the opposition clause within Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 in the context of Crawford v. Metropolitan Government of Nashville & Davidson County, Tennessee. In general, the opposition clause protects an employee from retaliation by his employer if he opposes his employer's illegal conduct. Part II summarizes the facts and the holding of Crawford. Part III describes Title VII discrimination in general and antiretaliation in particular. Part IV discusses the United States Supreme Court's rationale in Crawford, and Part V questions the interpretation of the opposition clause. Finally, Part VI agrees …

What Scribner Wrought: How The Invention Of Modern Dialysis Shaped Health Law And Policy, Sallie Thieme Sanford
Richmond Public Interest Law Review
In March 1960, Clyde Shields, a machinist dying from incurable kidney disease, was connected to an "artificial kidney" by means of a Ushaped Teflon tube that came to be known as the Scribner shunt. By facilitating long-term dialysis, Dr. Belding Scriber's invention changed chronic kidney failure from a fatal illness to a treatable condition. A half-century after this milestone, there are now more than 1.6 million people throughout the world on maintenance dialysis. This medical advancement has, in turn, had a profound impact on key areas of health law and policy. This paper focuses on the historical roots and current …
Jamming The Revolving Door: Legislative Setbacks For Mental Health Court Systems In Virginia, Sheila Moheb
Jamming The Revolving Door: Legislative Setbacks For Mental Health Court Systems In Virginia, Sheila Moheb
Richmond Public Interest Law Review
Proponents of MHCs assert that alternative court systems will provide efficient jail diversion programs and reduce the number of individuals with mental illness in the criminal justice system by directing them to appropriate community treatment facilities. At the same time, MHCs must serve as only one branch of a larger, cohesive community effort to deter individuals with mental illness from incarceration, if not from conviction. Both advocates and adversaries of MHCs remain wary of the potential misuse of mental health courts, which may subject people with mental illness to greater criminalization or lead to greater fragmentation of the mental health …

Richmond Public Interest Law Review
This comment analyzes how teen-to-teen sexting is presently addressed under the Code of Virginia. It also addresses the statutes under which Janie and her friends may be convicted for their various indiscretions as well as some of the long term consequences of those convictions. Additionally, it addresses the recent Virginia State Crime Commissions report on teen-toteen sexting. The General Assembly may soon seek to adjust the Code of Virginia to better address teen-on-teen sexting. The second part of this comment will consider the options put forth by the Virginia State Crime Commission report and at different legislative "fixes" that have …

The Book Of Job: Navigating Between The Two Jobs From The Perspective Of Ritual, Lawrence Pang
The Book Of Job: Navigating Between The Two Jobs From The Perspective Of Ritual, Lawrence Pang
Theses
The overarching problem concerning the unity of the book of Job is its conflicting juxtaposition of Job’s character. In the prose frame, Job does not charge God with any wrongdoing despite the afflictions against him and is acknowledged by God for his piety whereas in the dialogue, Job responses with words of accusation against God for his trouble and for mismanaging the affairs of the world according to the orthodoxy of reward and punishment. Various methodological approaches, ranging from the synchronic to the diachronic, have been advanced to account for the dissonance, however, to date, no attempt has been made …

Slavery In The White Psyche : How Contemporary White Americans Remember And Making Meaning Of Slavery : A Project Based Upon Independent Investigation, Ryan Nelson Parker
Theses, Dissertations, and Projects
This qualitative study explored how contemporary white Americans remember and make meaning of U.S. slavery and assessed if there is psychological conflict in relationship to slavery. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 15 participants who identify as "white" and were born and raised in the United States. Participants were asked to reflect on their memories of learning about, talking about, and knowing about the history of slavery; to share their internal representations of slavery and how they imagine their familial, personal, and imagined relationship with slavery; to report their beliefs about the impact of slavery on themselves personally and on contemporary …

Time For An Upgrade: Amending The Federal Rules Of Evidence To Address The Challenges Of Electronically Stored Information In Civil Litigation, Jonathan L. Moore
Law Student Publications
In recent years, electronically stored information (ESI) has begun to play an increasingly important role in civil litigation. Although the e-discovery amendments to the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure in 2006 provided guidelines for the discovery of this information, no accompanying changes were made to the Federal Rules of Evidence to govern the admissibility of this information at trial. This article outlines the vastly different ways courts have addressed this problem in three areas: authentication, hearsay, and the best evidence rule. After discussing the various approaches courts take in these areas, this article proposes specific amendments to the Federal Rules …

An Examination Of Challenging Behaviors In Autistic Disorder Versus Pervasive Developmental Disorder Not Otherwise Specified: Significant Differences And Gender Effects, Alison M. Kozlowski
LSU Master's Theses
Children with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASDs) are well-known for engagement in challenging behaviors. Unfortunately, due to its absence as a criterion for diagnosis in the DSM-IV-TR, little attention has been paid to the endorsement rates of such behaviors. However, a recently developed measure to assist in the diagnosis of infants and toddlers with autism and PDD-NOS – the Baby and Infant Screen for Children with aUtIsm Traits (BISCUIT) – has included a section designated for just this reason. This study used the BISCUIT to assess for significant differences in the endorsement rates of challenging behaviors between infants and toddlers with …

Louisiana's Hope For A Francophone Future: Exploring The Linguistic Phenomena Of Acadiana's French Immersion Schools, Albert Sidney Camp
LSU Master's Theses
Cajun and Creole French are thought of by scholars and lay-people alike as the two varieties of French spoken in Louisiana. While this may have been true to some extent in the past, the linguistic landscape of Louisiana is constantly evolving. As in other parts of the world, globalization, higher education, and an ever expanding media presence are changing the linguistic reality for Louisiana’s French speaking community. The twentieth century has seen a complete shift in the status of the French language in relation to public schools in Louisiana. In the early twentieth century, many children learned French at home …
Engaging Audiences: An Analysis Of Social Media Usage In Advertising, Emily Fay Mabry
Engaging Audiences: An Analysis Of Social Media Usage In Advertising, Emily Fay Mabry
LSU Master's Theses
The growing usage of social media indicates a potentially effective new platform for advertisers. However, little academic research examines how advertisers use these platforms for marketing and communications. This study sought to provide an analysis of current commercial social media usage by conducting interviews at a digital creative agency and full-service agency, in addition to conducting a statewide online survey of advertising professionals. Results indicated that advertisers use social media differently than they do traditional forms of advertising media. In the current digital media environment, advertisers must provide value or an added benefit to the consumer to gain their attention. …
