Differences In Personality Factors And College Major Choice, Jennifer Smith Nov 2010

Differences In Personality Factors And College Major Choice, Jennifer Smith

Theses

The transition from secondary education to post-secondary education is stressful for all students. The Individuals with Disabilities Education Improvement Act (IDEIA 2004) only mandates transition plans for students receiving special education services. Career assessments and transition services should encourage career exploration which requires students to have knowledge about oneself and the world of work. When career assessments provide students with this information, they may be more informed on what major to choose. The purpose of this study was to look at group differences among college majors and their personality factors as measured by the Sixteen Personality Questionnaire, 5th Edition (16PF-5). …

Assessing Intercultural Experience: Differences In Biculturalism, Intercultural Sensitivity, And Cognitive Flexibility Among Latino Immigrants, Christine Christmas Nov 2010

Assessing Intercultural Experience: Differences In Biculturalism, Intercultural Sensitivity, And Cognitive Flexibility Among Latino Immigrants, Christine Christmas

Masters Theses

This study examined first generation immigrants, defined as those who were born in a Latin American country and moved to the U.S. after the age of 12, and second generation immigrants, defined as those who were born in the U.S. or moved here before the age of 12. Literature in the field of cross-cultural adaptation suggests that intercultural communication competence tends to be further developed as a result of intercultural adaptation. The intent of this research was to test this assertion. Data was collected by way of survey administration on a sample of 216 Latino immigrants representing both first and …

Rejoinder To Cunningham Et Al., "Dewey, Women And Weirdoes", Terry Fitzgerald Nov 2010

Rejoinder To Cunningham Et Al., "Dewey, Women And Weirdoes", Terry Fitzgerald

Education and Culture

It is good to see Cunningham et al. including F. Matthias Alexander in their list of positive influences in John Dewey’s life. However, I believe Cunningham’s essay, ‘Shared explorations of body-mind: the reciprocal influences of Dewey and F.M. Alexander’, falls short in its acknowledgement of Alexander and in one important aspect is incorrect. In this response, I hope to set the record straight and briefly illustrate how the reciprocal influences of these two educators have continued to grow in the near-century since they first met.

Dewey, Peirce, And The Categories Of Learning, Steven K. Wojcikiewicz Nov 2010

Dewey, Peirce, And The Categories Of Learning, Steven K. Wojcikiewicz

Education and Culture

John Dewey proposes the “educative” experience as the goal of instruction. Yet, in focusing on the educative experience, Dewey may discount other sorts of learning which occur in school, and indeed in life. This piece proposes a recapitulation of Dewey’s theory through Peirce’s categorical system of experience, leading to three categories of learning. The three proposed categories, “accepting,” “analytical,” and “evaluative,” correspond roughly to learning “what”, learning “how”, and learning “why.” The intent here is not to reduce the importance of the educative experience, but rather to broaden the application of Dewey’s work by portraying learning as a multifaceted phenomenon.

A Model Of Dewey’S Moral Imagination For Service Learning: Theoretical Explorations And Implications For Practice In Higher Education, Zhuran You, A. G. Rud Nov 2010

A Model Of Dewey’S Moral Imagination For Service Learning: Theoretical Explorations And Implications For Practice In Higher Education, Zhuran You, A. G. Rud

Education and Culture

Abstract: While John Dewey’s learning theory has been widely credited as the essential theoretical underpinnings of service-learning, lesser attention has been paid to his concept of moral imagination regarding its immense potentials in nurturing college students’ moral growth in service-learning. This article explores Dewey’s framework of moral imagination and its implications for moral education in college service-learning programs to construct a moral imagination model that could enrich current service-learning theory and practice. The key components and structure of the model are delineated in details and the relevant examples of moral imagination in service-learning are also discussed.

John Dewey On History Education And The Historical Method, Thomas D. Fallace Nov 2010

John Dewey On History Education And The Historical Method, Thomas D. Fallace

Education and Culture

This essay constructs a comprehensive view of Dewey’s approach to history, the historical method, and history education. Drawing on Dewey’s approach to the subject at the University of Chicago Laboratory School (1896-1904), Dewey's chapter on the historical method in Logic: A Theory of Inquiry (1938), and a critique of Dewey’s philosophy of history that appeared in the American Historical Review and the published response to this attack by Dewey’s colleagues (1954), the author argues that Dewey consistently approached history in genetic and historicist terms.

Dewey's Challenge To Teachers, Stephen M. Fishman, Lucille Mccarthy Nov 2010

Dewey's Challenge To Teachers, Stephen M. Fishman, Lucille Mccarthy

Education and Culture

Given the serious social problems confronting Americans and others world-wide, the authors propose that Dewey's 1932 challenge to teachers is worthy of reconsideration by educators at all levels. In times similar to our own, Dewey challenged teachers to cultivate students' capacities to identify their happiness with what they can do to improve the conditions of others. At first glance, his challenge seems utopian. In order to justify their proposal for re-consideration, the authors explicate Dewey’s challenge by discussing two aspects of the thinking that lies behind it. These are (1) Dewey’s concept of ethical love and his argument that it …

One Principal's Educational Leadership In A Rural And Low-Performing Middle School In Virginia: A Case Study, Clara Lynn Fletcher Sodat Nov 2010

One Principal's Educational Leadership In A Rural And Low-Performing Middle School In Virginia: A Case Study, Clara Lynn Fletcher Sodat

Theses and Dissertations

This case study examined the leadership practices of one middle school principal in a low-performing rural school in Virginia. The experienced principal participant was in his first year of leadership at the school; he had led other low-performing schools to improved achievement that resulted in earning state accreditation as well as meeting federal Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) student proficiency targets. The focus school had failed to meet AYP for five consecutive years. The qualitative research design for this study included in-depth, semi-structured interviews with teachers, the principal, the assistant principal, and the principal’s supervisor; a total of 18 interviews were …

Dewey's Pragmatism And The Great Community, Philip Schuyler Bishop Nov 2010

Dewey's Pragmatism And The Great Community, Philip Schuyler Bishop

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

In investigating Dewey’s theory of the Great community, it is important to first examine closely Dewey’s theory of scientific inquiry and show how it evades the spectator theory of knowledge common to all modern epistemologies as closed systems. Dewey maintained that through controlled experimentalism we engage, and can solve, existential issues facing us for the purpose of expanding human freedom, promoting the democratic way of life and cultivating the institutions which foster these activities. The usage of inquiry to overcome problematic situations therefore stands as one of the first conditions needed to attain the great community.

Since Dewey did not …

Psychotropic Medication Use In The Pediatric Cancer Population, Mary Whitney Ward Nov 2010

Psychotropic Medication Use In The Pediatric Cancer Population, Mary Whitney Ward

Open Access Dissertations

Psychotropic medications commonly used with children have been associated with side effects significant enough to warrant warnings from the Food and Drug Administration. The risks of these side effects are potentially increased in children who are long-term survivors of childhood cancer because of damage to the heart and central nervous system (CNS) due to chemotherapy and radiation therapy. There are few empirical studies addressing whether children treated for cancer have greater exposure to psychotropic medications than the general population, the reasons for use of psychotropic medications in cancer survivors, or whether risks associated with cancer treatment are considered when psychotropic …
