Effects Of School-Wide Positive Behavior Support Programs On Teacher Morale, Samuel J. Smith, William A. Royal

Faculty Publications and Presentations

The effect of School Wide Positive Behavior Support (SW-PBS) on teacher morale was examined using the Purdue Teacher Opinionnaire (PTO). Faculty members of two rural Tennessee middle schools participated. The treatment group experienced initial implementation of a SW-PBS program and was both pretested and posttested. The middle school where the control group taught was posttested without implementation of SW-PBS. A paired t-test was applied to analyze the data, showing improvements at a significance level of .05 in the factors of facilities, rapport with the principal, and community pressures. Findings suggest that teachers are likely to have increased levels of morale …

Psychological Assessment In Vocational Rehabilitation: A Qualitative Exploration Of Acculturation Assessment And Clinician Testing Practices, Oscar A. Donoso

College of Liberal Arts & Social Sciences Theses and Dissertations

The vocational rehabilitation (VR) system, which provides services to people with disabilities to gain employment, often requires psychological testing to determine client access to services and vocational planning. Cultural bias inherent in standardized tests and inappropriate administration of tests can lead to invalid test results. Assessment of acculturation and test adaptations have been suggested as methods of cultural bias remediation. This study examined the testing practices of 25 psychologists who test VR clients via telephone interview. The study explored psychologists (a) clinicians’ definitions/conceptualizations of acculturation, (b) clinicians’ perceptions of the role of acculturation in the testing process for clients, (c) …

Creating The Capacity For Organizational Change: Personnel Participation And Receptivity To Change, Keith L. Smith, Cynthia B. Torppa

Journal of Extension

In a climate of continuous change, Extension organizations must find ways to navigate immediate challenges while developing capacity to thrive as future challenges and opportunities arise. To find ways, personnel's participation in planning was encouraged to increase openness to change as OSU Extension created and implemented its new Strategic Plan. Findings indicate that personnel from all levels of the organization who participated in the planning process were more receptive and less pessimistic about the plan and more motivated to make the plan a success. These findings suggest participation may help personnel cope with current changes as well as build capacity …

Looking At Extension As A Learning Organization, Ellen Rowe

Journal of Extension

This article shares an understanding of how Extension at a major university serves as a Learning Organization and its capacity to address change. The study examined how to assess the capacity of staff members to promote organizational learning. The researcher administered a 43-item survey instrument, the Dimension of the Learning Organization Questionnaire (DLOQ), designed by Watkins and Marsick (1997) to Extension employees. As a strategic planning tool, the survey identifies organizational learning strengths and challenges at the individual, team, and organizational levels.

ABSTRACT
This study included an analysis of the trend of performance indicators for the technical college sector of higher education in South Carolina. In response to demands for accountability and transparency in higher education, the state of South Carolina developed sector specific performance indicators to measure various educational outcomes for each of the 34 public colleges and universities in the state. Performance indicators allow an institution to compare its position in key strategic areas to peers, to past performance, or to previously set goals. The state assigned 13 performance indicators to the technical colleges. The study analyzed six specific indicators …

Staff Nurse Leadership: Leading At The Point Of Care, Anne L. Heid Aug 2010

Staff Nurse Leadership: Leading At The Point Of Care, Anne L. Heid

Theses and Dissertations

As health care undergoes pervasive transformation, the need has become acute to develop leadership at all levels of nursing. Decision-making by staff nurses at the point of care has significant impact on patient care outcomes and quality of health care in today's decentralized institutions. Little empirical research has been undertaken to understand the process of leadership at the staff nurse level. This study used the framework of symbolic interactionism and grounded theory research methodology to explore the process of staff nurse leadership. Descriptions of the process used to practice leadership at the staff nurse level were collected from staff nurse …

Sustainability Of The Educational Strategy Looping In Middle School Settings, Darcy Smith Aug 2010

Sustainability Of The Educational Strategy Looping In Middle School Settings, Darcy Smith

Education Doctoral

This qualitative study explores teachers’ and administrators’ experiences with the strategy looping in middle school settings. Whereas schools should seek to match ageappropriate, research-based strategies to the needs of students, introducing and sustaining change in public school settings is challenging. Whereas some schools fail to deliberately provide structures to support the development of positive student-teacher relationships, other schools with structures in place meet with varying degrees of success. Within interviews and focus groups, obstacles teachers and administrators experience implementing looping programs were explored using the following broad questions: (a) What are the lived experiences of teachers and administrators involved in …

In The Shadow Of Death: A Phenomenological Study Of The Experiences Of Mid-Life Widows And The Ethical Implications For Nurses, Virginia Lois Williamson Ph.D.

Journal of Health Ethics

Although there is evidence to support nursing as a moral practice, there is no formula or dose to describe how much the nurse is obliged to risk in order to meet the ethical demand placed on him or her as a professional and to preserve the vulnerable trust essential to establish and maintain a therapeutic nurse-patient relationship. On the basis of research and significant statements from interviews with five participants, this article discusses examples of nurses’ moral responsibility stemming from knowledge of consciousness about the value of presence inherent in the relationship between nurse and patient. The challenge for the …

Discourse At The Edge: Enterprise Discourse In Ireland, Brendan O'Rourke Jul 2010

Discourse At The Edge: Enterprise Discourse In Ireland, Brendan O'Rourke

Conference papers

Ireland is an economy, society and culture at the edge. It is at the edge of Europe and at the edge of both USA/UK and more mainland European or EU variants of capitalism. More recently it has been at the edge of economic crisis. Yet enterprise discourse is still central in Ireland. Enterprise discourse in Ireland is influenced by global and European Union (EU) developments. However, Irish enterprise discourse is not merely a ‘local adoption’. For example, high Irish economic growth rates during the ‘Celtic Tiger’ period have coincided with the development of the EU’s enterprise policy, thus giving the …

Enhancing The Delivery Of Library’S Services Through The Implementation Of An Emerging Information Technology: A Process Framework, Shamshul Bahri Jul 2010

Enhancing The Delivery Of Library’S Services Through The Implementation Of An Emerging Information Technology: A Process Framework, Shamshul Bahri

Research Publications (2006 to 2010)

This paper presents a process framework for implementing an emerging information technology in library. The motivation for this framework came from the lack of such tool to managers in service organizations such as libraries that have been actively implementing emerging technologies to enhance the delivery of their services. To develop the framework, a study was conducted on the implementation of Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) by the first public library in the UK to adopt the technology. Using the Lewin’s model of change as the study’s theoretical framework and the grounded theory approach as the study’s research method, an implementation process …

Rethinking System Diagrams: From Arranging Components To Organizing Action, Thought, And Possibility, Soojin Jun, Miso Kim, Joonhwan Lee Jul 2010

Rethinking System Diagrams: From Arranging Components To Organizing Action, Thought, And Possibility, Soojin Jun, Miso Kim, Joonhwan Lee

DRS Biennial Conference Series

The use of system diagrams has encouraged information designers to tacitly consider the holistic context. However, because the traditional understanding about the nature of systems has been highly focused on the arrangement of components within a static model, users’ experience is considered little. The goal of this research is to provide a theoretical framework to broaden designers’ conception of the system diagram and enable them to design system diagrams that would prove most effective for different situations, needs, and design problems. Therefore, the key of system diagrams is to understand the relationship of how the system is organized, according to …

The Challenges Of Information Transfer Between The Client Organization And The Temporary Multi-Organization (Tmo), Michel De Blois Jul 2010

The Challenges Of Information Transfer Between The Client Organization And The Temporary Multi-Organization (Tmo), Michel De Blois

DRS Biennial Conference Series

The mechanisms required for the transfer of both implicit and explicit information between the client organization and the temporary multi-organization are crucial in the programming process of construction projects. However, the identification and transfer of needs within the conception phase from the client (and eventually the users) towards the project team are rarely direct and easy. (Nadler et al., 1992) The evaluation of the project outcome (“as built”) against the initial project proposal, allows for a better understanding of both the project process and the influence of informal communications in translating client/user needs. This research project, comprised of three phases, …

Understanding Teachers' Change Towards A Reform-Oriented Mathematics Classroom, Linnae Denise Williams Jul 2010

Understanding Teachers' Change Towards A Reform-Oriented Mathematics Classroom, Linnae Denise Williams

Theses and Dissertations

Within the current mathematics teacher population there are teachers that want to change from traditional teaching styles to become more reform-oriented (i.e. focusing on student understanding rather than procedures). Many of these teachers do not know how to begin this change. This research looks into the tools that are most valuable for teachers as they change from traditional teaching practices to include more reform-oriented teaching practices. Through this phenomenological study, six successful reform-oriented teachers were interviewed to understand what tools they found to be most valuable in their process of change. The interviews uncovered a common guiding principle that facilitates …

Science Literacy: Hand In Glove With Numeracy, Gerry G. Meisels Jul 2010

Science Literacy: Hand In Glove With Numeracy, Gerry G. Meisels

Numeracy

Science Literacy requires numeracy as part of its foundation, and much of Numeracy draws on examples and applications from the sciences. They share the goal of creating a society that is mathematics numerate and science literate, and are interrelated. National priorities to strengthen both among all our students are driven by practical considerations of economic competitiveness that increasingly depend on technological innovation. It is also critical to each individual for long-term job opportunities and for informed citizenship. With up to 80% of 21st century jobs requiring mathematics and science skills, a large majority of the 2,900,000 students who graduate from …
