The Effects Of Leadership Style And Employee’S Participation On Perceived Justice, Wai Kwan (Elaine) Lau

Management Faculty Research

The present study proposes and tests a model that examines the relationship between leadership style, employee’s participation, and justice perceptions. Results indicate that transactional, transformational, and dynamic leadership have positive impact on distributive, procedural, and interactional justice. Moreover, the effect of leadership style on organizational justice was indirect through employee’s participation. There are also some interesting differences across different types of leadership style and justice.

Receiverships In The Prison Litigation Context: Factors Necessary For An Effective Judicial Remedy Of Last Resort, Liat Weingart Oct 2010

Receiverships In The Prison Litigation Context: Factors Necessary For An Effective Judicial Remedy Of Last Resort, Liat Weingart

Cardozo Public Law, Policy & Ethics Journal

This note examines the effectiveness of judicial receiverships as a last-resort remedy in institutional reform litigation, particularly in the context of prison systems. It argues that the success of receiverships depends on the court's ability to supervise effectively and ensure the receiver's independence from political influence. The analysis highlights that appointing executive agents as receivers often leads to conflicts of interest, undermining the remedy's effectiveness, and emphasizes the need for robust supervisory structures, such as Special Masters, to ensure accountability and alignment with court objectives.

Quiet Leadership: How To Create Positive Change Without The Noise And Negativity, Sharon B. Kinsey Oct 2010

Quiet Leadership: How To Create Positive Change Without The Noise And Negativity, Sharon B. Kinsey

Journal of Extension

Quiet leadership is a leadership approach useful in dealing with organizational change, according to Joseph L. Badaracco, Jr., author of Leading Quietly: An Unorthodox Guide to Doing the Right Thing. It relies on the three main virtues of tenacity, modesty, and restraint, as well as rests upon six tenets that define one's actions in dealing with organizational issues. Enacting change through small practical efforts is the hallmark of quiet leadership. Adding this tool to one's leadership arsenal will allow for a more complete approach to solving organizational issues and leading change from a positive place.

Corporate Governance And Mindfulness: The Impact Of Management Accounting Systems Change, John Joseph Williams, Alfred E. Seaman Oct 2010

Corporate Governance And Mindfulness: The Impact Of Management Accounting Systems Change, John Joseph Williams, Alfred E. Seaman

Research Collection School Of Accountancy

The International Federation of Accountants (2009) argues that a governance structure should go beyond conformance with regulations and equally support a performance dimension that can lead to better outcomes. This paper explores the relationship between these two governance dimensions and the capacity for mindfulness, utilizing organizational theory that describes high reliability organizations. Survey data was obtained from top-level accounting professionals in a sample of 124 Canadian firms. Regression results support the hypothesis that both the conformance and performance dimensions of governance are significant determinants of the capacity for mindfulness. Additional analysis shows that the explanatory power of this relationship persists …

Factors That Influence Faculty Intentions To Support The Community College Baccalaureate, Lori Kielty Sep 2010

Factors That Influence Faculty Intentions To Support The Community College Baccalaureate, Lori Kielty

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

An increasing number of community colleges in the United States are becoming baccalaureate-granting institutions. Proponents of the community college baccalaureate (CCB) argue that the CCB provides students with access to higher education, while others argue the CCB will compromise the community college's core values.

The purpose of this study is to explore faculty members' intention to support the CCB transition. Ajzen's Theory of Planned Behavior provides the theoretical framework for the study. The theory assumes that changes in behavior are intentional and, therefore, can be planned. This theory posits that attitudes, subjective (social) norms, and perceived behavioral control predict intentions …

It Governance As An Institutionalized Organizational Response In Higher Education: Case Studies Of Three Public Universities, Evelyn E. Winston Sep 2010

It Governance As An Institutionalized Organizational Response In Higher Education: Case Studies Of Three Public Universities, Evelyn E. Winston

Theses and Dissertations

The changes in the environment of higher education related to globalization, immigration, rising social-economic inequality, the knowledge economy and cultural identity (Benjamin, 2003, Collis, 2003) are requiring institutions to make some basic strategic choices. One of these decisions is the extent to which institutions of higher education will make conscious decisions to effectively govern scarce and expensive IT resources. As the role of information technology (IT) evolves into an integral part of most organizations (Liew, 2006), there have been "dramatic technological changes that have transformed computing from a back room utility to a strategic organizational resource" (Ross & Feeny, 1999, …

The Growing Latino Population Of Massachusetts: A Demographic And Economic Portrait, Phillip Granberry, María Idalí Torres Sep 2010

The Growing Latino Population Of Massachusetts: A Demographic And Economic Portrait, Phillip Granberry, María Idalí Torres

Gastón Institute Publications

This report highlights the growing number, and increasing diversity, of Latinos in Massachusetts. In this state, as well as nationally, Latinos’ share of the population continues to increase, in contrast to the aging non-Latino white population. If Massachusetts were to keep all its congressional seats in the reapportionment that will follow the 2010 Census, it would be chiefly due to the growth in its Latino and Asian population. The Latino population is young, with a high rate of dependent children and a very low rate of dependent elders. Its work- force composition remains stable: Latinos continue to be over-represented in blue-collar …

The Great Academic-Practitioner Divide: A Tale Of Two Paradigms, D. Brian Mcnatt, Myron Glassman, Aaron Glassman

Management Faculty Publications and Presentations

For decades, many academicians have expressed concern about the gap between themselves and practitioners. In those decades, much has been written about the probable causes of and methods for narrowing this gap. Despite the dialog and the efforts to narrow it, the gap remains. This paper explores four assumptions related to the gap. We use paradigm theory to examine the "academic world" and the "practitioner world" and to explain how the separate worlds perpetuate the gap. We then propose that academicians either accept the gap or legitimize the pracademic viewpoint. a paradigm that reconciles the differences between the academic and …

Exploring The Effects Of International Traffic In Arms Regulations Restrictions On Innovation In The U.S. Space Industrial Base, Kalliroi L. Landry Sep 2010

Exploring The Effects Of International Traffic In Arms Regulations Restrictions On Innovation In The U.S. Space Industrial Base, Kalliroi L. Landry

Theses and Dissertations

The International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR) are used to protect United States (U.S.) military technologies. However, changes to ITAR export controls regarding space technologies have had a major impact to the U.S. space industry. The literature mentions a concern for the health of lower-tier firms because they are a major source of innovation, but there is no additional information considering the effects of ITAR on space innovation at those lower tiers. The purpose of this thesis was to explore the implications of continuing the current ITAR restrictions with regard to innovation in the space industry. This research used a …

The purpose of this study was to examine group dynamics of educational leadership students in cohorts and make comparisons with the group dynamics characteristics of non-cohort students. Cohorts have emerged as dynamic and adaptive entities with attendant group dynamic processes that shape collective learning and action. Cohort (n=42) and non-cohort (n=51) students were surveyed on group variables of participation, communication, influence, trust, cohesiveness, empowerment, collaboration, and satisfaction. Descriptive statistics and effect size analyses were used for data analysis. Significant differences were identified in trust, cohesiveness, and satisfaction. However, findings show little effect on cohort structures in the areas of participation, …

A Hermeneutic Reading Into "What Strategy Is": Ambiguous Means-End Relationship, Ali Bakir, Milar Todorovic Sep 2010

A Hermeneutic Reading Into "What Strategy Is": Ambiguous Means-End Relationship, Ali Bakir, Milar Todorovic

The Qualitative Report

Given the underutilization of hermeneutic research in organizations and the recognition that we do not know what strategy is, we undertake a hermeneutic reading of authorial texts to develop a robust understanding of strategy. We enter into a self-reflexive dialogue with the text to accomplish a fusion of horizons where we hope to turn our prejudices into productive prejudices. In this dialogue, we utilize competing strategy paradigms within a framework that treats the means-end relationship and its underpinning rationality as central to our understanding. This study portrays strategy as a series of intended actions operating along the instrumental/objective - interpretive/subjective …

Criss Library Faculty Proceedings & Presentations

Criss Library conducted the ClimateQUAL survey during the 2009 fall semester. The library had been experiencing numerous changes due to a three year library renovation, several personnel resignations and library reorganizations. There was an over-riding perception of mistrust, fear and uncertainty that needed to be addressed. Our first step in addressing the negative perceptions was to run the ClimateQUAL survey to gather statistics for a better understanding of staff perceptions. Our next step was to report on the ClimateQUAL data to the library staff and start discussions on goals and solutions for addressing the organization climate. The third step was …

An Army Transformed: The U.S. Army's Post-Vietnam Recovery And The Dynamics Of Change In Military Organizations, Suzanne C. Nielsen Lieutenant Colonel

Books, Monographs & Collaborative Studies

During the 2 decades preceding the Persian Gulf War in 1991, the U.S. Army went through tremendous reform and rejuvenation. In explaining this important case of military change, this paper makes four central arguments. First, leaders within military organizations are essential; external developments most often have an indeterminate impact on military change. Second, military reform is about more than changing doctrine. To implement its doctrine, an organization must have appropriate training practices, personnel policies, organizations, equipment, and leader development programs. Third, the implementation of comprehensive change requires an organizational entity with broad authority able to craft, evaluate, and execute an …

The Influence Of Organizational Culture And Conflict On Market Orientation, Rex Evans Mcclure Aug 2010

The Influence Of Organizational Culture And Conflict On Market Orientation, Rex Evans Mcclure

Management Information Systems Faculty Research

This study examines the relationship between organizational change initiatives and market orientation. Considering the strategic approach to organizational change, a number of key behavioral variables can be affected, which in turn affect market orientation. Data were collected from 253 mid-level managers in marketing-related positions. The results suggest that convergent change, or classic downsizing, had no significant effect on market orientation or the mediating variables. Change initiatives directed reorienting affected market orientation in a positive way, though mediated by organizational commitment, trust, and internal communication.

Future Union Leadership: A Promising & Intense Immersion Model, John S. Gaal Aug 2010

Future Union Leadership: A Promising & Intense Immersion Model, John S. Gaal

Online Journal for Workforce Education and Development

The intent of this practitioner-based research study was to determine if the 98th session of the Harvard Trade Union Program (HTUP)—held January 12 through February 20, 2009—had a positive impact on future labor leaders’ attitudes and beliefs covering a wide range of pertinent leadership topics. Two surveys were administered over the course of the program in an attempt to ascertain whether or not the six-week experience played a part in changing participants’ attitudes and beliefs related to progressive union leadership. The participants of this program came from public and private sector unions and represented six countries.
