The Closed Rule, Michael Doran Jan 2010

The Closed Rule, Michael Doran

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

The closed rule constitutes a critical component of managerial power in the contemporary House of Representatives and an increasingly important element of the legislative process. Subject to the approval of the full membership, the closed rule allows managers to block all amendments to a measure when bringing that measure to the floor. Despite objections from the minority, both Republicans and Democrats regularly use the closed rule when in the majority, and rank-and-file members ordinarily approve any closed rule put to a floor vote. Once rarely used, the closed rule has become managers’ preferred instrument for controlling the House floor agenda. …

Leadership Across Nations, Christian Plott

Honors Capstones

More and more industries are entering into a global economy, which opens the windows of possibilities but also brings new challenges. One such challenge is leaders being able to effectively lead such a diverse group of people. The purpose of this paper is to examine different cultural dimensions of five regions, each consisting of the two or three biggest countries in that region. After those dimensions are defined within each region, leadership styles for each region will be defined. Thus giving leaders a source to turn to when faced with the task of leading those from the regions that are …

The Influence Of Proactive Personality On Social Entrepreneurial Intentions Among African American And Hispanic Undergraduate Students: The Moderating Role Of Hope, Leon Christopher Prieto Jan 2010

The Influence Of Proactive Personality On Social Entrepreneurial Intentions Among African American And Hispanic Undergraduate Students: The Moderating Role Of Hope, Leon Christopher Prieto

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The primary purpose of this study was two-fold: 1) to determine if a relationship exists between proactive personality and social entrepreneurial intentions among African American and Hispanic undergraduate students; and 2) to determine if hope moderates the relationship between proactive personality and social entrepreneurial intentions. The findings demonstrated that there was indeed a positive relationship between having a proactive personality and social entrepreneurial intentions among students; these findings supported the conclusions made by Crant (1996) which demonstrated that proactive students tend to have intentions to become entrepreneurs. Also, the findings demonstrated that hope did not moderate the relationship between proactive …

It Governance In Small And Medium Enterprise Post Sarbanes Oxley, Carlos Anthony Thomas Jan 2010

It Governance In Small And Medium Enterprise Post Sarbanes Oxley, Carlos Anthony Thomas

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The history of IT governance research has been dichotomous in that research either focused on the IT governance structural arrangements or the contingencies that affect IT organizational decisions. Weill and Ross’s (2004) seminal text on IT governance represents a synthesis of these two streams of research and thus establishes a new trajectory in the discourse related to IT governance. Their study included analysis from both survey data and case studies. However, the case study sites included were of large capitalized companies. Moreover, the cases were conducted prior to the mandated implementation of Section 404 of Sarbanes Oxley (SOX), which oversees …

The Growing Need For A Unified Biopsychosocial Approach In Mental Health Care, Timothy Melchert Jan 2010

The Growing Need For A Unified Biopsychosocial Approach In Mental Health Care, Timothy Melchert

College of Education Faculty Research and Publications

Psychology has been remarkably successful as a scientific discipline and field of clinical practice. Despite its remarkable growth, however, the field has also experienced substantial conflict and controversy. There has been great diversity in the approaches counselors and psychologists have used to understand development, psychopathology, and the goals and processes of psychotherapy. This has led to large numbers of conflicts and controversies that have distracted the field from its primary purposes. A biopsychosocial approach has the potential to bring the field together around a unified science-based framework for understanding mental health practice that will avoid these conflicts.

White Faculty As Racial Justice Allies At A Predominantly White Institution, Jennifer Kristine Loftin Jan 2010

White Faculty As Racial Justice Allies At A Predominantly White Institution, Jennifer Kristine Loftin

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

This qualitative study uses the conceptual framework of critical race theory to examine the experiences of White faculty as racial justice allies at a predominantly White institution. Kobrak (1992) has emphasized the significant role that socially concerned White faculty may play on our campuses, describing these faculty as the “missing link” in institutional efforts for diversity. However, little is known about the experiences of White faculty allies. The current study addresses this void through the primary research question: What are the experiences of White faculty at a predominantly White institution who participate in the campus community as racial justice allies? …

Validity Of Delone And Mclean's Model Of Information Systems Success At The Web Site Level Of Analysis, Begoña Pérez-Mira

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The DeLone and McLean Model of Information Systems (IS) Success is one of the most cited and commonly-used models in the IS literature. Generally, the model has been used mainly to explain IS success at the individual level of analysis. However, in rare occasions it has been utilized on its entirety to measure success at the organizational level of analysis. In this study, the DeLone and McLean Model of IS Success is applied at the organizational level of analysis in the E-commerce environment. We gather website features from 448 top retailers, categorize them following DeLone and McLean’s taxonomy, and introduce …

Organizational Financial Performance: Identifying And Testing Multiple Dimensions, Robert B. Carton, Charles W. Hofer

Faculty Articles

This research addresses the measurement of organizational financial performance. Its primary purpose is to provide researchers and managers a better understanding of the implications of selecting the dependent variables that should be used in empirical studies and management practice where organizational financial performance is the criterion of interest. This is the first study that has undertaken to empirically identify both the different distinct dimensions of organizational financial performance and the measures that represent those dimensions. Since no prior research has empirically established the domain of organizational financial performance, this research is by necessity exploratory in nature. A two-part approach was …

A Study On The Determining Factors Of Operational Efficiencies Derived From Outsourcing : Malaysia As An Attractive Hub., Anbalagi Andy, Jesrina Ann Xavier, Lee Siew Yoong

Student Works (2010-2019)

Outsourcing had undergone a massive evolution since 1970s and has changed the way businesses operate in the global market place. Offshore outsourcing, in particular, has become a viable strategic venture and is no longer an exception but rather it is a norm in today’s economy. Many businesses are able to gain various operational efficiencies by embarking into strategic outsourcing initiatives although existing literatures have proven that there are also significant risks associated with this type of venture. It is interesting to note that not all outsourcing efforts have provided positive results for organizations nor proved fruitful. Nevertheless offshore outsourcing has …

I Was Banging My Head Against A Brick Wall: Exclusionary Power And The Gendering Of Sport Organizations, Ruth Sibson

Research outputs pre 2011

The under-representation of women in sport management has increasingly been recognized by government and nongovernment organizations, and there has been some attempt to redress the imbalance. Research has indicated, however, that the gendering of sport organizations is not simply a numbers' game. The purpose of this study was to analyze the exercise of exclusionary power as an aspect of gender relations within a six member volunteer Board of Directors of an Australian local, grass-roots sport organization. Data were gathered using semistructured interviews, participant observation and documentary evidence over a 15-month period. This study identified that, although numerical under-representation of men …

Implications Of Contemporary Leadership Models On Sales Management, Ellen M. Raineri

AMTP Proceedings 2010

As organizations have discovered that they cannot solely compete on price, product, quality, or technology, organizations have sought the use of optimum leadership models to assist with competition and survival. After examining the evolution of three contemporary leadership models: Spiritual Leadership, Primal Leadership, and Innovative Leadership, it is shown that these models offer sustenance in various ways for organizations and employees. Furthermore, because of the introduction and practice of Spiritual Leadership, Primal Leadership, and Innovative Leadership, specific implications exist for sales management as related to their sales reps and to their customers.

Elementary Teachers' Attitudes About Professional Development: Professional Development Schools Versus Non-Professional Development Schools., Cynthia L. Gissy

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This study will look at elementary teachers’ attitudes about professional development: professional development schools versus non-professional development schools. Professional development schools are partnered with institutions of higher education and have many types of opportunities for in-service teachers, higher education faculty, and pre-service teachers to participate in professional development together. The goal of all stakeholders in a professional development school relationship is to impact public school students, to better prepare pre-service teachers and provide additional and specific professional development opportunities for in-service teachers. The goal would be to show that participation in a professional development partnership would yield a more positive …

Race And Sex In Organizing Work: "Diversity," Discrimination, And Integration, Tristin K. Green

Emory Law Journal

This Article provides the first extended analysis of the conscious consideration of race and sex in organizing work. It draws on research and literature in the fields of sociology, social psychology, and organizational theory to expose the risks and possibilities of permitting race- and sex-based decisions organizing work for workplace equality. Based on this empirical foundation and on established Supreme Court case law setting limits and conditions on the use of race and sex in employment decisions under Title VII, the Article presents an argument that is equally normative and doctrinal.

The Closed Rule, Michael Doran Jan 2010

The Closed Rule, Michael Doran

Emory Law Journal

This Article presents the first comprehensive analysis of the closed rule in the legal literature. After situating the closed rule within its institutional and theoretical context, this Article examines the use of the closed rule by the Republican majority in the 109th Congress and the Democratic majority in the 110th Congress. The Article then undertakes both a positive and normative analysis. The positive analysis generalizes three prominent accounts of the closed rule from political theory and argues that the closed rule can more accurately be understood as a broadly managerial instrument for maintaining order on the House floor. The normative …

Multicultural Counselor Training: Assessment Of Single-Course Objectives And Pedagogical Strategies, Krista M. Malott, Tina R. Paone, Cleborne Maddux, Terri Rothman

Journal of Counselor Preparation and Supervision

The purpose of this study was to examine the extent to which multicultural counseling courses throughout the United States include course objectives and pedagogical strategies recommended in the literature (Arredondo et al., 1996) and in professional counseling standards and guidelines. Findings from 277 participants indicate that most, not all, courses include the recommended objectives and strategies. The most common (85.9%) objective was self- awareness of own values and biases, whereas only approximately 50 percent included an objective related to critiquing counseling theories. The most common pedagogical strategies were classroom discussions/debates (95.3%), whereas fewer than half integrated cross-discipline readings and student …

Developing the capacity of full-time and adjunct faculty to be co-facilitators of program change resulted in the transformation of a disjointed program into a jointed, well-grounded program based on the co-equal foundation of scholarship and practice.

Railroads And Economies Of Scale And Scope In U.S. Manufacturing Industries: 1850-1880. Chandler Revisited, Michael Kalson Jan 2010

Railroads And Economies Of Scale And Scope In U.S. Manufacturing Industries: 1850-1880. Chandler Revisited, Michael Kalson

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

This study concerns the measurement and quantification of the relationship between railroadization in the United States in the mid-19th century and the subsequent evolution of the modern, large-scale, corporate form of industrial business organization marked by significant economies of scale and scope, as described in various writings by Alfred Chandler. Focusing on American industry as it developed from 1850-1880 using data uniquely suited to empirical analysis of economies of scale and scope, its aim is to determine whether the growth of the American railroad network, as Chandler contended, expanded markets and augmented the American financial sector such that the …

Mentoring And Coaching Executive Secretaries In The Zimbabwe Union: A Strategy For Change, Solomon Maphosa Jan 2010

Mentoring And Coaching Executive Secretaries In The Zimbabwe Union: A Strategy For Change, Solomon Maphosa

Doctor of Ministry Projects

Problem

The Southern Africa Indian Ocean Division (SID) has never developed or implemented a program for coaching and mentoring newly elected leaders at any administrative level—division, union, or conference. Newly elected officers report personal and professional frustration as a result. It is reasonable to infer this has contributed to new leaders facing difficulty in delivering expected performance on the job, effecting their careers and service to the community of believers.

Methodology

The study followed the qualitative research paradigm. Qualitative research became a method of choice because it is descriptive in nature and it provides the researcher with the opportunity to …

Transforming West Zambia Field Of Seventh-Day Adventists To Conference Status: A Case Study, Passmore Hachalinga

Doctor of Ministry Projects

Problem

The Seventh-day Adventist Church in the Southern Africa-lndian Ocean Division (SID) experiences annua] baptized membership growth of 5-7 percent. This membership growth rate however has not resulted in church organizational self- support. Efforts implemented by the SID administration to bring local fields to the required level of self-support, or conference status, in a timely manner failed to yield expected results during the 2005-2010 periods. This study project seeks to address this challenge by conducting a case study of West Zambia Field of Seventh-day Adventists.

Method

An assessment was conducted in the West Zambia Field of Sev enth-day Adventists using …
