Oxidative Stress In Shaal Sheep Of Different Age Groups, Jamileh Salar-Amoli, Ali Baghbanzadeh Jan 2010

Oxidative Stress In Shaal Sheep Of Different Age Groups, Jamileh Salar-Amoli, Ali Baghbanzadeh

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

Oxidative stress plays an important role in the etiology and/or progression of a number of diseases and aging. In this cross-sectional study, some oxidative stress biomarkers (malondialdehyde [MDA] as a lipid peroxidation biomarker, ferric reducing/antioxidant power [FRAP], and total nonprotein SH groups) in plasma samples of Shaal ewes of different age groups were assessed. For all 3 measured parameters, the youngest age group (10-30 months old) had the lowest amounts. Although FRAP levels increased slightly and age dependently, nonprotein SH group content showed a decreasing trend after a peak in the 31-50 months group. The highest MDA concentration was observed …

Between April 2007 and October 2008 we collected 1995 horse mackerel specimens from the territorial waters of the Bulgarian Black Sea. Age, length, and weight of these specimens were determined to estimate length-weight relationships and age composition. The present study utilized otolith characterization to determine age. The sex ratio was 1:1.36686 (M:F). The prevalent age classes were 2+, 3+, and 4+. The exponent b of equation resulted in the value 3.3046, which indicates that the weight growth is positive allometric. Growth parameters of the von Bertalanffy equation were separately evaluated for females and males as follows: L_{\infinity} = 19.66, K …

Embryological And Cytochemical Features Of Scilla Autumnalis L., Zeynep Mi̇ne Coşkun, Meral Ünal

Turkish Journal of Botany

Nucellar epidermal cells in the micropylar region of Scilla autumnalis L. differentiate into a nucellar cap. It secretes a PAS-positive exudate filling the micropyle. A group of cells at the chalazal end of the nucellus forms a hypostase. Close to the antipodals, the hypostase cells contain abundant starch grains, suggesting a function as a storage tissue. Another ovular structure is the obturator. It secretes an exudate that stains deeply with PAS reaction, and it takes a role in directing the growth of pollen tubes toward the micropyle. Cytochemical tests in the mature embryo sac indicate the presence of high amounts …

Interference Elimination Studies During The Determination Of Trace Elements In Cow Liver Using Differential Pulse Polarography, Ümmi̇han T. Yilmaz, Güler Somer

Turkish Journal of Chemistry

The liver is known to accumulate many trace elements; thus it is very important to determine their level in a sensitive way. The objective of this study was to develop a simple method for the simultaneous determination of trace elements in cow liver in which the elimination of interference can be accomplished. It was observed that Cd, Pb, Zn, and Cu ions could not be determined correctly in the presence of Se(IV), because of interference of Se. It was shown that this interference could be eliminated by using pH 8.5 NaAc electrolyte. In this medium first Cd and Zn were …

Methods For Assessing Fish Populations, Kevin L. Pope, Steve E. Lochmann, Michael K. Young

Nebraska Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit: Staff Publications

Fisheries managers are likely to assess fish populations at some point during the fisheries management process. Managers that follow the fisheries management process (see Chapter 5) might find their knowledge base insufficient during the steps of problem identification or management action and must assess a population before appropriate actions can be taken. Managers will implement some type of assessment during the evaluation step as a means of measuring progress relative to objectives. Choosing how to assess a population is an important decision because managers strive to maximize their knowledge of a population while minimizing the time and money expended to …

Emergence Of Diseases From Wildlife Reservoirs, J. C. Rhyan, T. R. Spraker Jan 2010

Emergence Of Diseases From Wildlife Reservoirs, J. C. Rhyan, T. R. Spraker

Michigan Bovine Tuberculosis Bibliography and Database

Interest in the epidemiology of emerging diseases of humans and livestock as they relate to wildlife has increased greatly over the past several decades. Many factors, most anthropogenic, have facilitated the emergence of diseases from wildlife. Some livestock diseases have ‘‘spilled over’’ to wildlife and then ‘‘spilled back’’ to livestock. When a population is exposed to an infectious agent, depending on an interaction of factors involving the host, agent, and environment, the population may be resistant to infection or may become a dead-end host, a spillover host, or a maintenance host. Each exposure is unique; the same species of host …

United States Department of Veterans Affairs: Publications

Blacks are twice as likely to develop and die from multiple myeloma (MM), and are less likely to receive an autologous hematopoietic-cell transplant (AHCT) for MM compared to Whites. The influence of race on outcomes of AHCT for MM is not well described. We compared the probability of overall survival (OS), progression- free survival (PFS), disease progression, and nonrelapse mortality (NRM) among Black (N=303) and White (N=1892) recipients of AHCT for MM, who were reported to the Center for International Blood and Marrow Transplant Research (CIBMTR) from 1995 to 2005. The Black cohort was more likely to be female, and …

Michalek, Inkyung Jung, Charles E. Wade, John G. Meyers, Daniel L. Dent, Deborah Mueller, Ronald M. Stewart

United States Army: Publications

BACKGROUND: Tight glucose control (TGC) may reduce mortality in critically ill trauma patients. We hypothesize that euglycemia is beneficial, and a measure considering time and degree of hyperglycemia is most associated with mortality.

METHODS: We performed a review of intensive care unit trauma patients admitted for more than 3 days between January 2005 and December 2007 on a TGC protocol with a goal of 80 to 110 mg/dL. Hyperglycemic, hypoglycemic, and euglycemic time ranges, and area of interpolated curves above and below 80 to 110 mg/dL were assessed. Associations with mortality were based on logistic regression models adjusted for age, …

Activity Of Topical Antimicrobial Agents Against Multidrug-Resistant Bacteria Recovered From Burn Patients, Jessie S. Glasser, Charles H. Guymon, Katrin Mende, Steven E. Wolf, Duane R. Hospenthal, Clinton K. Murray

United States Army: Publications

Background:

Topical antimicrobials are employed for prophylaxis and treatment of burn
wound infections despite no established susceptibility breakpoints, which are becoming vital in an era of multidrug-resistant (MDR) bacteria. We compared two methods of determining topical antimicrobial susceptibilities.

Methods:

Isolates of Pseudomonas aeruginosa, methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), extended spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL) producing Klebsiella pneumoniae, and Acinetobacter baumanii-calcoaceticus (ABC) from burn patients were tested using broth microdilution and agar well diffusion to determine minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) and zones of inhibition (ZI). Isolates had systemic antibiotic resistance and clonality determined. MDR included resistance to antibiotics in three or more …

Differences In Bone Mineral Density Among Adolescent Female Tennis Players And Non-Tennis Players, Kevser Ermin

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Approximately 10 million Americans have osteoporosis. Physical activity (PA) is an important step in preventing osteoporosis and is one of the major determinants of peak bone mass during adolescence. However, type of pa plays an important role when examining the effects of pa on bone mineral density (BMD). Purpose: 1) to determine the differences in BMD among adolescent female tennis players (TP) and non-tennis players (NTP); 2) to determine the differences in body composition (BC) between adolescent female TP and NTP; 3) to determine whether BC variables (weight, fat mass, and lean mass) were predictive of differences in BMD; and …

Quantitative Phosphoproteomics Through Β-Elimination And Michael Addition With Natural Abundance And Stable Isotope Labeled Thiocholine, Meng Chen

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

The reversible covalent phosphorylation of cellular proteins is widely believed to be the most important mechanism for the regulation of multiple signal transduction pathways in cell growth, division, and death by acting as a molecular switch at multiple nodes in metabolic networks. In this dissertation, first, a novel mass spectrometric strategy is reported that exploited the unique chemical properties of thiocholine that was introduced into protein phosphosites through alkaline beta-elimination and Michael addition: BEMA), allowing the specific detection, identification and quantitation of phosphorylated serine/threonine containing peptides. Through replacement of the phosphate with thiocholine as the Michael donor, this strategy resulted …
