‘Food For Life’: Looking Beyond The Horizon, Charles A. Francis, John W. Doran Jan 2010

‘Food For Life’: Looking Beyond The Horizon, Charles A. Francis, John W. Doran

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

Our real challenge appears to be anticipating what the major challenges and constraints will be to food production and distribution a decade or more into the future. This could be called ‘Beyond the Horizon’ thinking. Today there is little disagreement over the massive depletion on a global scale of two essential inputs to agriculture: fossil fuels and fresh water. We also recognize that phosphorus is found in concentrated form in only a few deposits in nature, and that agriculture is rapidly using this limited resource and dispersing it through harvested products and soil loss from fields in forms that make …

Growth And Fitness Components Of Wild × Cultivated Sorghum Bicolor (Poaceae) Hybrids In Nebraska, Lilyrani Sahoo, Jared J. Schmidt, Jeffrey F. Pedersen, Donald Lee, John L. Lindquist Jan 2010

Growth And Fitness Components Of Wild × Cultivated Sorghum Bicolor (Poaceae) Hybrids In Nebraska, Lilyrani Sahoo, Jared J. Schmidt, Jeffrey F. Pedersen, Donald Lee, John L. Lindquist

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

• Premise of the study: Gene flow from crops to wild relatives has received considerable attention since the advent of genetically modified crops. Numerous researchers have found wild – crop hybrids to be nearly as fit as their wild parents, which suggests that crop genes may persist in wild populations. Components of the ecological fitness of cultivated sorghum, its wild relative, shattercane, and their hybrids have not been studied.

• Methods: To assess the potential for gene introgression into shattercane, we crossed cultivated sorghum to a single inbred shattercane line to produce F1 hybrids and measured growth …

Zinc Alleviates Salt Stress And Increases Antioxidant Enzyme Activity In The Leaves Of Pistachio (Pistacia Vera L. ‘Badami’) Seedlings, Vahid Tavallali, Majid Rahemi, Saeed Eshghi, Bahman Kholdebarin, Asghar Ramezanian

Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry

The mechanism(s) by which Zn alleviates NaCl stress was investigated in Pistacia vera L. 'Badami'. Pistachio seedlings were treated with 0, 800, 1600, 2400, and 3200 mg of NaCl kg^{-1} of soil, along with Zn (0, 5, 10, and 20 mg kg^{-1} of soil). NaCl stress induced high oxidative stress, increasing lipid peroxidation, electrolyte leakage, and lipoxygenase (LOX, E.C. 1.13.11.12) activity to high levels. Zn supplement efficiently reduced all these adverse effects of salt stress. However, there were no significant differences among the above parameters in plants treated with Zn only. NaCl stress significantly increased the activity of antioxidant enzymes. …

The Effects Of Pet Ownership On Physical Well-Being In Older Adults, Tami Pohnert

Theses and Dissertations

A large percentage of Americans own pets which may impact their health. This study examines pet ownership’s effect on well being in older adults looking at race/ethnicity. A sample of 6,565 older adults (>60) was selected from the Third National Health and Nutrition Survey. Pet owners comprised 28.3% of the sample. The theories of symbolic interaction and social integration were used to examine pet ownership’s effect on physical components of well-being. The descriptive results showed statistically significant differences in age, education, income, and marital status between pet owners and non-pet owners. Pet owners were younger, more educate, higher income …

Characterizing The Advanced Glycation Endproducts Formation Of Proteins And Nucleotides By Methylglyoxal And Glyoxal, Praveen Kumar Pampati Jan 2010

Characterizing The Advanced Glycation Endproducts Formation Of Proteins And Nucleotides By Methylglyoxal And Glyoxal, Praveen Kumar Pampati

Open Access Dissertations

Advanced glycation endproducts (AGEs) are a heterogeneous group of molecules formed from the nonenzymatic reaction of reducing sugars with free amino groups of proteins, lipids, and nucleic acids. The initial product of this reaction is called a Schiff base, which rearranges itself into an Amadori or glycation product which can further rearrange to AGEs. The reaction is called Maillard reaction and is the basis for all protein glycation studies. AGEs accumulate in tissues and associate with the pathology of various diseases like Diabetes, Alzheimer's disease, renal failure, aging, etc. Methylglyoxal, 3-Deoxyglucosone and glyoxal (oxoaldehydes or α-dicarbonyls) have recently been proposed …

A Review And New Framework For Instructional Design Practice Variation Research, Hillary Leigh, Monica W. Tracey Jan 2010

A Review And New Framework For Instructional Design Practice Variation Research, Hillary Leigh, Monica W. Tracey

Administrative and Organizational Studies

This article reviews practice variation in the field of instructional design. First, it compares instructional designer practice as reported or observed in several classic research studies. This analysis is framed by the standards established by the IBSTPI competencies for planning and analysis, design and development, implementation and management. Although no certain causal linkages exist, we briefly review some of the reasons posited in the literature to explain ID practice variation (i.e. lack of time and resources, control in decision-making, the designer’s perception of a task, underlying philosophical beliefs, and designer expertise). Limitations of the literature-base are explored, followed by a …

A Spline Kernel Based Smoothing Algorithm : A Comparison Of Methods With A Spatiotemporal Application To Global Climate Fluctuations, Derek Daniel Cyr Jan 2010

A Spline Kernel Based Smoothing Algorithm : A Comparison Of Methods With A Spatiotemporal Application To Global Climate Fluctuations, Derek Daniel Cyr

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

In statistics, smoothing is a technique that attempts to capture the key patterns or trends in data while leaving out the noise that is obscuring them. Nonparametric techniques are well-suited for smoothing as they do not rely on assumptions that the data arise from a given probability distribution.

Recovering Brande : Freewriting And Sustainable (Procedural) Expression, Richard Bower Jan 2010

Recovering Brande : Freewriting And Sustainable (Procedural) Expression, Richard Bower

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

Dorothea Brande is rarely known in rhetoric and composition yet continues to hold popular influence over writers attracted to Cartesian beliefs. The aim of this project is to recover Brande's contributions in order to rethink composition's trajectories. Chiefly, Dorothea Brande's legacy has been in creative writing through Becoming a Writer. In this bestseller, she establishes a program for putting the Cartesian divide to work. "Writing with the unconscious mind in the ascent," as Brande explains about what Ken Macrorie and Peter Elbow later call freewriting, harnesses the bifurcated consciousness of writers and begins a journey of unification.

Respondent Driven Sampling : Feasibility, Validation And Its Potential Use For Estimating Health Indicators For Large General Populations, Robin Lee Jan 2010

Respondent Driven Sampling : Feasibility, Validation And Its Potential Use For Estimating Health Indicators For Large General Populations, Robin Lee

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

BACKGROUND: Researchers use many methods to collect population-based health indicator data. Random digit dial (RDD) is one frequently used method; however decreasing sample coverage and non-response bias have researchers searching for alternative methods. We hypothesize that respondent driven sampling (RDS) is a cost effective alternative. In accordance with this hypothesis we propose three objectives: 1) assess the mechanics, feasibility, and representativeness of RDS in producing valid estimates of health indicator data; 2) evaluate the feasibility in using RDS in comparison to RDD to collect health indicator data from a general population; and 3) report on data collected using RDS, specifically …

Toward A Policy Framework For The Design Of Economic Information Packages, Andrew Whitmore Jan 2010

Toward A Policy Framework For The Design Of Economic Information Packages, Andrew Whitmore

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

The emergence of product certifications such as "organic," "fair trade" and "shade grown" has gone far to introduce non-price related product information back into the consumer decision making process thereby reducing information asymmetries and improving market outcomes. Recently, these certifications have been supplemented by the emergence of several web-based consumer decision support systems that are designed to disseminate non-price product information to consumers. Like printed product labels, these new web-based systems present the same informational cues to each consumer regardless of his or her preference for the information and they rate products with fixed weights that are not customized to …

Effects Of Early Developmental Stress On Adult Physiology And Behavior, Michael James Frederick Jan 2010

Effects Of Early Developmental Stress On Adult Physiology And Behavior, Michael James Frederick

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

Events during early development can have long-term effects on physiology and behavior. While extreme developmental stress is known to be associated with a variety of behavioral problems, it is less well understood how milder stress may affect behavior, personality, and reproductive success. This research project assessed a variety of behavioral dimensions in a college age sample, while assessing early development using size at birth, fluctuating asymmetry, and retrospective surveys. Maternal stress during pregnancy was found to reduce adolescent growth spurts and adult handgrip strength in the offspring. In males, lower birth weights were associated with higher scores of impulsivity and …

Children's Weekend Activities In Four Countries : Context For Personal And Social Development, Asil Ozdogru

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

Out-of-school time constitutes a major context of social and emotional development for children across cultures. Because it is not constrained by school attendance, weekend time allows cultural and gender differences in time usage to emerge. In this study, children's weekend activities, choice, and some of the related emotional outcomes were examined for fourth-grade students in four countries. A total of 1,265 children of families from middle socioeconomic status in Bulgaria, Taiwan, Turkey, and the United States completed an activity survey asking them to state their typical activity for each of 12 hours on Saturday, their enjoyment of the activity, and …

RESULTS: COPD patients were slightly older than controls and had more pack years of smoking than smokers with normal lung function. Co-morbidities were more prevalent in COPD patients than in …

Arsenic Speciation Analysis Of Biological Fluids : A Study Of Liquid Chromatography Coupled To Analytical Atomic Spectrometric Instrumentation, Kanna Ito Jan 2010

Arsenic Speciation Analysis Of Biological Fluids : A Study Of Liquid Chromatography Coupled To Analytical Atomic Spectrometric Instrumentation, Kanna Ito

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

Arsenic exists as many different chemical forms including inorganic, methylated and dietary species. The toxicity of these species varies: some are highly toxic and can cause adverse health effects in many parts of the body; others are considered relatively non-toxic. Monitoring arsenic exposure is usually accomplished by its direct measurement in biological fluids. Urine is the specimen of choice for assessing arsenic exposure, because of its short biological half-life in blood. There have been very few studies of arsenic species in blood, yet such research can provide valuable information on arsenic distribution and its metabolism in the body.

Moving Beyond Anecdote : An Impact Evaluation Of A Popular New York State Work Supports Program, Rebecca J. Wood

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

This study used New York State administrative data on its welfare population and publicly available data to evaluate the impact of a popular work supports program, the Transitional Opportunities Program (TOP), in a sample of ten counties that operated the program compared to eight counties that did not between January 2006 and December 2008. Secondary administrative data on case characteristics, case activity, and employment were matched with data on unemployment from the New York State Department of Labor and mean travel time to work from U.S. Census 2000.

Negotiating New Roles, New Moralities : Ukrainian Women Physicians At A Post-Socialist Crossroad, Maryna Yevgenivna Bazylevych Jan 2010

Negotiating New Roles, New Moralities : Ukrainian Women Physicians At A Post-Socialist Crossroad, Maryna Yevgenivna Bazylevych

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

My dissertation discusses concepts of professionalism and morality as seen by women physicians in post-socialist Ukraine. As in many other post-socialist societies, Ukrainian women constitute the majority of the medical profession (over 70% of practicing physicians and 80% of medical students). Most of the existing literature explains this narrowly in materialist terms whereby low salary is viewed as determinant of low prestige and thus unattractiveness to men. I suggest that prestige is defined much broader in the local context. Based on ethnographic fieldwork in Central and Western Ukraine (2007-2008), I argue that the meanings of prestige carry both socialist and …
