Consumer-Generated Media And Advertising—Are They One And The Same? An Analysis Of The Amended Ftc Guides Concerning The Use Of Endorsements And Testimonials In Advertising, 10 J. Marshall Rev. Intell. Prop. L. 206 (2010), Jessica Godell

UIC Review of Intellectual Property Law

The advertising industry as well as the endorsements and testimonials that support advertising have been expanding into new mediums for years. As a result of this continual growth, the Federal Trade Commission (“FTC”) recently amended the FTC Guides Concerning the Use of Endorsements and Testimonials in Advertising (“The Guides”). The FTC, which sought to apply The Guides to consumer-generated media for the very first time, had not amended The Guides prior to these revisions in three decades. As a result, the changes garnered a number of mixed reactions from the media, consumers and the advertising and legal industries. Under the …

Influence Of Selenium And Mercury Chemistries On The Progression Of Cardiomyopathy In Pygmy Sperm Whales, Kogia Breviceps, Colleen E. Bryan

MUSC Theses and Dissertations

Pygmy sperm whales (Kogia breviceps) are the second most frequently stranded toothed whale along the U.S. Atlantic and Gulf coasts. More than half of documented cases exhibit signs of cardiomyopathy (CMP). Many factors may contribute to the development of idiopathic CMP in K. breviceps, including genetics, infectious agents, contaminants, biotoxins, and dietary intake (vitamins, selenium, mercury, and pro-oxidants). Nutritional deficiencies of selenium (Se) have been shown in mouse and bovine models to contribute to CMP. The K. breviceps diet, consisting mainly of squid, imparts a high dose of mercury (Hg), which requires detoxification, and polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) that require …

The role of caring for a pregnant adolescent can be rewarding, but it also possess unique challenges. A significant number of adolescent pregnancies are unintended and therefore providing comprehensive counseling is important even before the initiation of sexual activity. By understanding the risk factors the patient may further be provided delivery of appropriate health prevention/promotion services. It is also important for the health provider to continue to be an integral part of the life of the teenager and her child for an optimal development and growth.

Healthcare Reform & The Missing Voice Of Complementary And Alternative Medicine, Gwendolyn R. Majette Jan 2010

Healthcare Reform & The Missing Voice Of Complementary And Alternative Medicine, Gwendolyn R. Majette

Law Faculty Articles and Essays

Given the high prevalence of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) use by Americans, coupled with the emphasis placed on prevention in many of the healthcare reform proposals, this article argues that CAM should play a role in the healthcare reform conversation. Part I provides the background information on CAM including its definition, CAM use, and its cost. This section also broadly outlines the contours of the early healthcare reform proposals, those in existence as of January 2009. Part II describes how CAM would ideally be integrated into the United States healthcare system. Part III outlines the reasons CAM has been …

Integrating Contemplative Practice Into The Undergraduate Pursuit Of Finding And Following An Intuitive Call, Jan M. Wall Jan 2010

Integrating Contemplative Practice Into The Undergraduate Pursuit Of Finding And Following An Intuitive Call, Jan M. Wall

Educational Studies Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to investigate the integration of contemplative practice into higher education. The intention of such integration would be to facilitate a students ability to hear and follow an intuitive call. Intuition was defined as an immediate, unmediated or tacit way of knowing; calls or callings as inner directives towards meaningful life pursuits. Intuition and calls were seen as overlapping and interchangeable terms. The literature review for this study explored relevant trends in higher education. One trend involves academic shifts towards professional readiness, or marketable skills, away from personal quests (such as following a call). Paradoxically, …

The Cordyceps mushrooms have a long history as medicinal fungi. In Traditional Chinese Medicine, Cordyceps have been used to treat several conditions including cancers for thousand of years. Extracts from both mycelium and fruiting bodies of C. sinensis, C. militaris and other Cordyceps species showed significant anticancer activities by various mechanisms such as, modulating immune system and inducing cell apoptosis. Some polysaccharide components and cordycepin (3' -deoxyadenosine) have been isolated from C. sinensis and C. militaris, which acted as potent anticancer components. This review article aims to further elucidate the importance of Cordyceps mushrooms by summarizing the findings of some …

Meeting Social Emotional Needs In Early Childhood Education, Veronica Armstrong Jan 2010

Meeting Social Emotional Needs In Early Childhood Education, Veronica Armstrong

Graduate Research Papers

Is our nation's educational system heading in the right direction? Tremendous emphasis is being put on academic achievement. With this emphasis comes severe consequences for those schools not meeting standards. This situation is causing many administrators, teachers, and support staff as well as parents, community members, and government officials to have blinders on when it comes to how best to help children succeed. Some believe that the best way to help children learn is to cram it at them quickly and efficiently and hope they retain the information long enough to regurgitate it for the standardized test. Others believe that …

Singing It Out: Riot Grrrls, Lilith Fair, And Feminism, Jamie Lee Huber

Kaleidoscope: A Graduate Journal of Qualitative Communication Research

This essay analyzes two women-inspired music events, the riot grrrl movement and Lilith Fair, from a feminist rhetorical perspective to highlight their relationships with feminism and feminist activism. Drawing on feminist standpoint theory, muted group theory, and work that emphasizes the connections between the artistic and political, I rhetorically analyze the lyrics of one song from two riot grrrl artists (Bikini Kill and Sleater-Kinney) and two Lilith Fair artists (Sarah McLachlan and the Cardigans), highlighting the differences between the two movements while also emphasizing the value and need for both.

Silicon Fertilization Affects Growth Of Hybrid Phalaenopsis Orchid Liners, Wagner A. Vendrame, Aaron J. Palmateer, Ania Pinares, Kimberly A. Moore, Lawrence E. Datnoff

Faculty Publications

Experiments were conducted during two different time periods to determine if hybrid phalaenopsis orchid (Phalaenopsis spp.) liners accumulate silicon (Si) and if this element can affect liner growth. A total of 800 liners were evaluated and Si fertilization was performed by applying potassium silicate (KSiO3) as a drench with three treatments (0.5%, 1.0%, and 2.0% v/v) and a control (water, no Si fertilization). The application of KSiO3 affected overall growth of phalaenopsis orchid liners, where Si content of the plant ranged from 0.5% to 1.7%. Overall, Si applied at 0.5% and 1.0% increased fresh weight and dry weight (DW) and …

Development Of A Prototype Bayesian Network Model Representing The Relationship Between Fresh Market Yield And Some Agroclimatic Variables Known To Influence Storage Root Initiation In Sweetpotato, Arthur Villordon, Julio Solis, Don Labonte, Christopher Clark Jan 2010

Development Of A Prototype Bayesian Network Model Representing The Relationship Between Fresh Market Yield And Some Agroclimatic Variables Known To Influence Storage Root Initiation In Sweetpotato, Arthur Villordon, Julio Solis, Don Labonte, Christopher Clark

Faculty Publications

A prototype phenology-driven Bayesian belief network (BBN) model, named BxNET, was developed to represent the relationship between fresh market yield (U.S. #1 grade) and agroclimatic variables known to influence the critical storage root initiation stages in 'Beauregard' sweetpotato. This data-driven model was developed from experimental data collected over 3 years of field trials in which management variables were kept as uniform as possible. The BBN was developed assuming that soil moisture measured at the 15-cm depth was not a limiting variable during the first 20 days after transplanting, during which the onset of storage root initiation determined the majority of …

The relevance of loci associated with blood lipids recently identified in European populations in individuals of African ancestry is unknown. We tested association between lipid traits and 36 previously described single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in 1,466 individuals of African ancestry from Spanish Town, Jamaica. For the same allele and effect direction as observed in individuals of European ancestry, SNPs at three loci (1p13, 2p21, and 19p13) showed statistically significant association (p < 0.05) with LDL, two loci (11q12 and 20q13) showed association with HDL cholesterol, and two loci (11q12 and 2p24) showed association with triglycerides. The most significant association was between a SNP at 1p13 and LDL cholesterol (p = 4.6 × 10-8). This SNP is in a linkage disequilibrium region containing four genes (CELSR2, PSRC1, MYBPHL, and SORT1) and was recently shown to relate to risk for myocardial infarction. Overall, the results of this study suggest that much of the genetic variation which influences blood lipids is shared across ethnic groups. © 2010 Springer-Verlag.
